Owen Campbell has cemented himself as one of Australia’s premier alternative blues/rock exports with 3 best-selling studio albums, 2 EPs and over 12 years of national and international touring.

Owen has wowed audiences in all corners of the world from the USA, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Spain, Netherlands, Japan, Hong Kong, India and even performed at the highest blues festival in the world, The Himalayan Blues Festival in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Every one of Owen’s albums has hit the Top 10 on iTunes Blues Charts in over 10 countries. One of which “Sunshine Road” reached Number 1 on the overall charts (Australia), knocking Adele of the top spot in 2014.

Owen Campbell & The Cosmic People are alternative blues and soulful cosmic rock at its best. Inspired by the tempo of the ocean, Owen’s sound is best described as smouldering guitar work running from bluesy riffs and soulful finger-picking to lap steel guitar solos using a shot glass slide, gritty caramel vocals and a sublime rhythm section.

“My parents were a big influence,” says Owen. “They introduced me to such an awesome collection of music from such a young age – Bob Dylan, Van Morrison and The Rolling Stones. I always loved the variety and diversity to their sounds. My sound has bits of country, soul, roots, and rock. I love the variations.”

In 2020 Owen released his 5th studio album “Rolling Thunder of Love” which debuted at number 2 on the independent music charts.

“I thought it was time to do something different, so I enlisted a group of talented friends and musical pilgrims and we congregated at a farm style studio in the hills outside of Cootamundra, NSW. We laid down the soul of the album over a few melting summer days and I quickly realised this was going to be something special. After so many years and albums I finally feel like I’ve found my musical homeland in this album. Easily one of the most rewarding rock n roll experiences I’ve ever had the pleasure to take part in.”

Owen Campbell - In The Shadow Of The Greats EP

Size: 53,1 MB
Time: 20:19
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2015
Styles: Acoustic Blues Rock
Art: Front

01. Ol' 55 (3:24)
02. Money (3:29)
03. Days Like This (2:59)
04. Hermosa Vision (3:53)
05. I'm On Fire (3:53)
06. Remember To Breathe (2:38)

One of Australia’s consummate roots and blues guitarists, Campbell delivers a neat little package in this six-track EP.

It’s mainly covers but that doesn’t diminish the class he brings to Tom Waits’ Ol’ 55 and Sir Van Morrison’s Days Like This. Campbell rocks out with some neat finger-picking on The Beatles’ Money and his own Remember To Breathe, a track featured in a sometimes controversial appearance on Australia’s Got Talent three years ago. Fortunately for him he has the songs and talent to put that behind him and forge his own path.

Thank you everyone who has enjoyed this album, it was a pleasure to produce and to work with the musicians involved. Also big thanks to Dave McCluney at Atlantis Sound in Melbourne for doing a great job. ~OC

Campbell defies easy categorization. He’s a slide guitarist, a songwriter, banjo player, blues singer, busker, and more. The sort of performer found in New Orleans blues joints, right? In fact, Campbell’s roots are in Canberra, Australia, not NOLA. While he’s performed and toured internationally for more than seven years, his 2012 run on ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ helped capture the hearts of a wider audience.

Owen Campbell is a 28-year old Australian slide guitarist/singer/songwriter who got his break as the runner up on Australia’s Got Talent. In 2011, Campbell released his self-produced debut Sunshine Road which hit #1 on the blues charts in Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. The Pilgrim, Campbell’s second album, was produced by Mark Opitz (AC/DC, INXS) and is set for a June release.

You’ll like it if…You’re into blues records from the 50’s and 60’s that aren’t completely polished and overproduced. It’s also for those that are comfortable calling something blues that doesn’t follow a 12-bar or similar blues purist approved structure.

Avoid if…You’re looking for a more contemporary blues sound that’s similar to modern American blues artist like Kenny Wayne Shepard, Robben Ford, and Gary Clark Jr. Campbell chooses to leave his arrangements sparse, and resists the urge to clean every bit of dirt from his takes. Of course blues purists will cringe as well since Campbell pulls heavily from a variety of non-blues influences including folk, rock, and indian.

About the Album: Campbell’s second album The Pilgrim sees Campbell branching out from the guitar style that originally won him fans on Australia’s Got Talent. Campbell’s unique acoustic slide style is almost completely absent from The Pilgrim, and in its place are downright nasty electric tones that sound like a sputtering dimed out 50’s fender combo. Sure it’s a little muddy, but after all this is the blues, and it fits the genera well. While the album touches on a variety of genres, tunes like “Remember to Breathe,” “Wreckin’ Ball,” Leave it alone” are big full band mid-tempo blues rockers with huge drums, and screaming organ, and Campbell’s nearly shouted vocals. The arrangements have plenty of room for the music to breathe and aren’t stifled by overproduction and unnecessary parts.
