Gene Taylor (July 2, 1952 – February 20, 2021) was an American pianist best known for his boogie woogie style. Over a career spanning more than 50 years he accompanied many great musicians, produced several solo albums and was briefly part of Canned Heat. Taylor began his musical training as a drummer at age eight but two years later he had picked up both the guitar and his initial piano skills from boogie-woogie pianist-neighbours. By the age of 16 he was an orphan and was essentially forced to fund himself - his receding hairline disguising his remarkable youth. He soon found himself working with some of the big names in the West Coast blues scene including Big Joe Turner and T-Bone Walker, aided by the fact that he "was cheap" and had a driver's license and was thus able to not only add piano parts but also make sure that the musicians reached their gigs.

In the mid-seventies he joined the James Harman Band and had a stint as pianist for boogie group Canned Heat between November 1974 and May 1976. There are no known recordings of Taylor playing with Canned Heat during this period but ten songs were later recorded with part of the band, Taylor playing piano with Larry Taylor and Fito de la Parra. According to Canned Heat historian, Walter de Paduwa, Taylor's abrupt departure from the band came in 1976 when an apparently banal spat over a pizza at a restaurant in the south of France turned into a full blown argument. Taylor returning to Long Beach, California, then, two years later relocating to Toronto. He would remain based in Canada, on and off, until 1993, often playing with his friend Morgan Davis and the Downchild Blues Band.

From 1981 to 1984 he first toured with The Blasters, with whom he formed one of his most lasting and important collaboration that would eventually yield three albums. In 1986 Taylor finally recorded his first solo album, Handmade. His The Return of the Formerly Brothers, recorded with Amos Garrett and Doug Sahm in 1987, won a Juno Award the following year for Best Roots & Traditional Album. In 1993, Taylor relocated from Canada to Austin, Texas. Here he began to play with The Fabulous Thunderbirds, a partnership which would last until 2006 and included two 'solo' albums with the band's leader Kim Wilson. In 2002, he also found time to join the tours and recordings for the “Original Blasters Reunion”. He recorded an eponymous second solo album for Pacific Blues in 2003 partly accompanied by James Harman and Bill Bateman. This album included a version of "Pinetop's Boogie Woogie".

From 2007, Taylor was often based in Belgium, playing and recording with Fried Bourbon, CC Jerome's Jet Setters, Dave Alvin and Jo' Buddy. He toured as the Gene Taylor Trio, with drummer Nico Vanhove, and the guitarist Bart De Mulder. He played at the Brussels Boogie-Woogie Festival of 2012, which took place at the Théâtre St Michel on November 24. Shortly after his death, the Dr Boogie show on Belgium's Classic 21 radio commemorated Taylor with an hour of programming and cited him as 'almost Belgian'. On February 20, 2021, Taylor's housemate - the filmmaker Monty McMillan - found him dead in his bed in their home in Austin, Texas. The cause of death was confirmed by the Taylor family to be hypothermia, due to the house having been without heat in the dead of winter during the statewide power outages caused by the 2021 Texas power crisis. /Wikipedia

Rhythm Bomb Records (London) presents: ‘Shakedown’s Th’owdown’ the new album by Shakedown Tim & The Rhythm Revue. It’s a swell and varied collection of blues, swing, jump, R&B, rock ’n roll… played with attitude and authentic sounds. American blueslegend James Harman is the producer of this album. He also layed down some mighty fine harmonica. On ‘Icepick’s Shakedown Th’owdown’ he surprised everybody by shoutin’ out loud the album title and turning the recording room into a real juke joint party on a saturday night! Piano player extra ordinaire Gene Taylor came over to tickle the ivories on six tracks. The music fitted Gene like an old shoe. Even after a recording career of 45 years, he still has new tricks up his sleeve, just when you weren’t expecting it. He played beautifully!!!
The music sounds like it came from the previous century.

Tim sings about todays life… ex. about the way the analog man deals with this digital era… but most topics are timeless and universal: love, seks, adversity, good times, survival, parties… The Rhythm Revue was in great shape (as always) and delivered BIG TIME. Bart Stone blew out some greasy and fat tones while Dennis Tubs was in control of ‘the engine room’ where he produced his magic rhythms. Boss stayed cool, calm & collected and handled the low frequencies perfectly. (All bass, no treble!!!) Tim turned his little ’41 Gibson amp all the way up to 10 and did his thang… Luckily the amp didn’t catch fire during this hot session. The previous album ‘Hard To Catch’, produced by Nico Duportal, did really good and got the band on many renowned European stages.

A veteran with nearly two decades’ experience on the bandstand, Chris Ruest’s passion for classic blues and roots rock forms comes through in an original voice that combines immediacy and authenticity.

Having lost both his parents and brother by the age of 15, Gene Taylor was firmly committed to the life of a musician. After obtaining his driver's license at age 16---and looking much older, thanks to an already-receding hairline---he started finding local work with such L.A.-based blues legends as Big Joe Turner, T-Bone Walker, Lowell Fulson, and Pee-Wee Crayton. In his own words, "Well, I was playing good boogie-woogie and pretty fair blues at this point, and going to blues jams with my fake ID (identification). The word got out that I wanted to work! Since I was young and would work cheap, I was hired by these guys sometimes as a 'fill-in' on local gigs for the older piano players who weren't available or wanted too much money!" (laughter) "But I was a quick learner and I had a car---all the better to drive the older guys around!" (more laughter) This experience was invaluable to Gene's musical foundation.

Chris Ruest belongs to the impressive class of serious Texas blues guitarists, a group that includes Johnny Moeller, Shawn Pittman, and Nick Curran. While the others may have wider name recognition, Ruest has quietly built a reputation of excellence that is spreading beyond his Austin home base. A veteran with nearly two decades’ experience on the bandstand, Ruest’s passion for classic blues (jump, Chicago, and Gulf Coast) and roots rock forms comes through in an original voice that combines immediacy and authenticity. Dead-on songwriting and savvy selection of covers provide a platform for his unaffected, honest vocals and tough guitar.
Ruest’s band has opened for Bobby “Blue” Bland, Johnny Winter, Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets, and Little Charlie and the Nightcats. 2005 brought Ruest’s recording debut as a solo artist, Too Many Problems, a spirited collection that captured crisp performances in glorious, true-to-vintage sound. The notable players who appeared on that disc, including Preston Hubbard, Matt Farrell, and “Kaz” Kazanoff in addition to Curran and Hash Brown, offer testimony to the respect Ruest commands among his colleagues. Now expanding his performance schedule to a wider circuit that includes Sweden, France, Costa Rica, MO, CT, Mass, RI, Tenn, Houston, Corpus Christi, and San Antonio, and club and festival dates outside Texas, Ruest recorded a follow-up CD No 2nd Chances that went to #1 on living blues charts and #3 on BB KIngs Bluesville and a 3rd Live at Shakespeares! “My goal is to play everywhere and keep playin’.”

Gene Taylor is an extraordinary blues piano-player and singer, born in Los Angeles, California, in 1952. At the age of eight, he came under the influence of a family of blues and boogie-woogie players who moved in next door to his house. After starting out with the drums, he switched to the piano and the guitar at age ten. He learned very quickly playing by ear and, at age 11, he began performing in a 'family band' with his best friend Jim Payne and Jim's parents. They worked occasional neighborhood functions, giving Gene his first experience as a 'paid musician'---playing and singing country music.
n 1993, Gene relocated to Austin, Texas, and joined The Fabulous Thunderbirds, remaining with this internationally-acclaimed band until September of 2006. During his almost-14 years with the T-Birds, he toured the world constantly and recorded two studio albums and one live album with the band---plus, a live DVD! He also played on 2 of T-Bird leader Kim Wilson's solo CD's. In 2003, Gene released a self-titled CD on the Pacific Blues label and participated in all the tours and recordings of the 'Original Blasters Reunion' from 2002-2003. He has also appeared on a recording (2006) with his dear friend, legendary L.A. bluesman, Carlos Guitarlos---and of course, Gene continues to record and perform with his friend of over 35 years, 'Icepick James' Harman (13 records and counting!).

Acclaimed american blues rock and boogie-woogie pianist, Gene Taylor, began, around the age of 16, working with some of the big names in the West Coast blues scene including Big Joe Turner and T-Bone Walker. In the mid-seventies he joined the James Harman Band and then Canned Heat and in 1981 The Blasters recording four critically-acclaimed albums for Warner Brothers and appearing on every important music television show of the period. From 1993 to 2007 Taylor played with The Fabulous Thunderbirds amongst various other projects. During the years Gene’s piano playing has been required by Dwight Yoakam, Kim Wilson, Charlie Musselwhite, Amos Garrett, Doug Sahm, Kid Ramos, Junior Watson, Carlos Guitarlos and many more... Let Me Ride In Your Automobile is Gene Taylor’s 4th solo album and it’s the rockinest one, just like a cocktail of his work with The Blasters during their 1980's Los Angeles heyday and from his later years with The Fabulous Thunderbirds down in Austin, Texas.

When label founder Carlos Diaz came up with the idea of me recording a disc for El Toro, he suggested that I use CC Jerome's Jetsetters as the backing band. I had known the accomplished roots-rock guitarist CC Jerome for about ten years or so and, since I was in Belgium at the time and he and the Jetsetters (bassist Deon Buck and drummer Coen Molenschot) were right over the border in Holland, it seemed like a cool idea. El Toro is a label which is well known for spotlighting American-style roots music, rockabilly and rhythm & blues, so I figured that's the kind of direction we would take. I tried to focus on the type of musical material somewhat similar to what I used to play with The Blasters during our 1980's Los Angeles heyday and maybe throw in some ideas from my later years with The Fabulous Thunderbirds down in Austin, Texas.

Anyway, I'd written some rockers, a couple of different-sounding grooves, plus two instrumentals, while also selecting four songs by others to cover, including the title track. I wanted the sound and feel of the music to be live and spontaneous and Jerome and the guys all agreed. Our producer/engineer Roel knew exactly what we were looking for and we were able to record each song in either one or two takes with a minimal amount of overdubs. As luck would have it, a good buddy of mine, Nick Curran, was gigging around Holland and Belgium and he contributed some smokin' guitar on a couple of these tracks. On "The Golden Rule" Nick's guitar is on the left stereo channel while Jerome's guitar can be heard on the right and they each take blistering solos on this cut. "The Walkout", has Nick handling all the lead guitar with Jerome playing a ferocious backbeat along with Coen's snare drum throughout the song. Listen to the dueling bass lines, a combination of the left hand of the piano and Deon's upright bass, which occur at various times on this one. Thanks, Nick…killer, bro!

The opening instrumental, "Evangeline Stomp", features Jerome's guitar laying down a solid rhythm as the piano and Martin "Tinez" Van Toor's tenor sax battle it out. Flat-out rockers such as "Rockin' Little Honey", the hillbilly boogie classic "Seven Nights To Rock" and a souped-up version of Johnny 'Guitar' Watson's "Motorhead Baby" are the kinds of upbeat, jump-style, boogie-woogie vocal numbers that I started out playing as a youngster. The guitar, piano and tenor sax absolutely wail on these cuts. The rhumba-flavored "Just A Midnight Girl" (a cool bridge section and check out Jeffrey Thielens' fine harmonica solo), the funky "Never Took The Time" (lots of instrumental fireworks and a nice back-up vocal chorus by Holland's Birgit Wijdemans) and the gospel-inspired "The Blues To Me" (a really good horn arrangement by Martin and some soulful guitar by Jerome here) were all written especially for this CD and each one goes off in a bit of a different direction. I'm also pleased that I was able to record a song which I often play live, the swamp-pop favorite, "Shirley Jean". The title cut, "Let Me Ride In Your Automobile", was recorded in one take with no overdubs whatsoever and is the type of West Coast-cool blues that I heard and played growing up in Los Angeles. We loosely follow Lowell Fulson's arrangement on this song, which I occasionally played live with him back in the early 1970's. The closing instrumental, the up-tempo "Flying With Whitey", is a boogie-woogie which I composed as a tribute to the Air Force squadron commander of a friend of mine back in the United States and it wraps up the disc with some wild guitar, saxophone and piano.

So there you have it. That's my new disc on El Toro Records and, on behalf of everyone who helped make it happen, I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed playing this music.

Thanks and warmest regards,

Gene Taylor

Kim WILSON - That's Life / Tigerman

Harmonica player, songwriter, and singer Kim Wilson is as much a student and historian of classic blues as he is one of the U.S.'s top harmonica players. Simply put, Wilson has taste; when he enters the recording studio, he has a clear vision of what he wants his next record to sound like. Aside from all this, he's also an extremely hard worker and a major road hog, spending upwards of 200 nights a year on the road, playing festivals and clubs throughout the U.S., Canada, and Europe with his own Kim Wilson band and leading the Fabulous Thunderbirds.
Although he's long been known as the charismatic frontman for the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Wilson's solo albums - which feature bands of his own choosing for different tracks - is where the genius in his work shows through most clearly.Wilson's solo albums are solid productions, highly recommended for harmonica students and fans of classic Texas blues and rhythm & blues.

Note: On 'That's Life', Kim Wilson's second solo album, the vocalist/harpist hits on the right formula of Texas roadhouse blues and gritty blues-rock, turning out a uniformly satisfying album. Some of the original songs are a little weak, but the performances are convincing and enjoyable, even if they don't offer a new spin on Texas blues-rock.

Notes: Tigerman, the first solo effort from the Fabulous Thunderbirds' frontman, Kim Wilson, is an uneven album, hampered by the uncertainness of Wilson and his band. They run through a standard set of blues-rock, plus Texas-and Chicago-style shuffles and boogies, but they never really let loose. Consequently, there are pleasant, enjoyable spots on the album, but never anything truly memorable.
