Two time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Stephen Stills and five-time Grammy nominated guitarist, songwriter and singer Kenny Wayne Shepherd may be separated by a musical generation, but they are bonded by a mutual love of the blues. When they joined forces with famed Chicago rock/blues keyboardist Barry Goldberg and formed The Rides, their extraordinary collective histories proved to be unparalleled - blazing a 21st Century trail for the historical American art form. Launching an exciting new chapter in each of their storied careers, the trio's new band is further powered by the explosive rhythm section of bassist Kevin McCormick and Shepherd's longtime drummer Chris Layton (also a veteran of the legendary Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble). Their 429 Records debut, Can't Get Enough features the new single Don't Want Lies and showcases a hard hitting mix of Stills-Goldberg-Shepherd penned blues/rock originals as well as some classic blues tunes. Also included are brilliant interpretations of Muddy Waters, Honey Bee, Elmore James and blistering twists on Stills' favorite Neil Young anthem & Rockin' In The Free World as well as the Iggy Pop & The Stooges early 70s classic Search and Destroy.

New York City born JP Williams attended Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. It was there that he began moonlighting at college coffee houses playing a mixture of folk, blues and soul. After college JP returned to the city and performed at open mikes, and jams. He gave up performing, returned to Tunkhannock just north of Wilkes-Barre, and opened a music store called the “Music Workshop”. He finally resumed performing in 2014.

JP released his debut album “Mixed Bag” in 2016 and won the Steamtown Music Award for “Best Blues Act” at the annual Electric City Conference in Scranton. Two Eps followed, and in 2017 he was nominated Steamtown’s “Best Guitarist”. In 2018 JP released his second full length recording “Everblue” featuring the Russian born Ekat Pereyra joining him on four tracks.

Nine of the ten songs, on this new album, were written by JP. He and Ekat front a band including keyboardist Eric Brody; Eddie “The Harp” Czarkowski or Tommy “Chi-Town” Perrone Jr, harmonica; Andy Bower, saxophone; bassists Gregory Joseph or Firp Edmunds; and Jack Roberts or Mike Weber, drums. Six more musicians are also featured.

JP opens with “Mighty Dangerous Boogie” featuring a hip narrative and some heavy beats as Perrone wails away on his harp. “Around Midnite” is an evocative song sung by Ekat with Bower on sax and some airy guitar from JP. “Regret” is another narrative with the lyric “don’t do nothin’ you might regret one day”; Eddie is on harp and Bower on sax, as Ekat sings in the background.

“Solid Gone” features JP with some fine guitar as Ekat steps upfront, with keyboardist Brody, Eddie on harp, and the rhythm section of Joseph and Roberts. “Never Break This Heart” features the rhythm section of Bill Coleman bass, and Sharon O’Connell drums, as Ekat takes the lead.

“Don’t Let The Devil Ride” is a tune included as a tribute to Leo “Bud” Welch, a gospel and blues singer, who started his career at the age of 82. JP reminds us that Leo believed “it’s never too late in life to follow your dreams”. Sung as a duet between JP and Ekat the band’s performance on this classic makes it the centerpiece of this fine recording.

My favorites include the guitar driven duet “Honeychild” with some sweet harp from Eddie; and Ekat singing both “Grey Autumn Day” and “Need a Little Sugar” with Brody on piano. JP closes with the “Talkin’ Coronavirus Blues” and the lyric “wash your hands, don’t touch your face”.

JP is a fine story teller on this entertaining follow-up to his highly acclaimed “Everblue”. ~Richard Ludmerer

Later he was one of the first bluesmen to have a multi-racial backing band at live performances. Freddie King is often mentioned as one of “the three kings” of electric blues guitar along with Albert King and B.B. King (no relation).
In 1993 by proclamation from the Texas Governor Ann Richards, September 3 was declared the Freddie King Day. Freddie King placed 15th in Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. In 2012, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Throughout their 30 years together as session/touring pros, the Uptown Horns have always maintained their stellar band The Uptown Horns Revue, worked on their original songs, and performed regularly at East Coast clubs, often featuring guest stars like Willy DeVille, Peter Wolf, Catherine Russell, Joe Louis Walker, Southside Johnny, Debbie Davies, and Johnny Copeland. This album, also titled "The Uptown Horns Revue", is the culmination of those years, and includes a stellar cast of friends-of-the-Horns that include Keith Richards, Peter Wolf, and the late great Albert Collins - performing on a bracing blast of rhythm & blues. The Uptown Horns - saxists Crispin Cioe & Arno Hecht, trombonist Bob Funk & trumpeter Larry Etkin (who replaced Paul Litteral in 1991) formed in NYC in 1980, hosting a weekly gig/jam session at Tramp's nightclub. Within a year, "The Uptown Horns Party" was attracting large crowds, as guest jammers included Elvis Costello, Dr. John, David Johansen, Solomon Burke, Rufus Thomas, Wilson Pickett, The Neville Brothers, and many others.

Flesh & Blood was a short lived super-group put together by Mark Mangold (Touch, Drive She Said) on keyboards, Danny Vaughn (Tyketto) on vocals, Al Pitrelli (Savatage, Joe Lynn Turner, Alice Cooper) on guitar, Chuck Bonfante (Saraya, Drive She Said) on drums and Mitch Distefano on bass.

Blues For Daze is bluesy-based hard rock…classic rock mixing upbeat rockers and atmospheric mid-tempo / ballads with more than a hint of AOR / Melodic Rock. Keyboardist Mark Mangold had this to say about the re-issue, “So thrilled to be revisiting our bluesy funky side, with the bonus tracks, and hanging with friends. I love listening to this album. Mamma say stank.”

Vaughn & Co. rock out to Feel the Power, Shake Ya Tail Feather, title track Blues For Daze (Mr. Blue)” and I Know Where You Been, then chill out for the beautiful Bed of Roses, Jenny Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Man Enough and the classic “Voodoo Moon”. Danny gives us his take on this album, ‘Blues For Daze’ is one of my favorite albums that I have ever done. It came at a time when I needed a change, and its ultra cool, bluesy roots gave me a chance to go vocally exploring in a place that I had always wanted to go but had always been worried that maybe I didn’t have “the stuff” that it takes. It’s up to the listener to decide if I came through or not but, inspired by such a tremendous group of songs and such wonderfully talented players, I gave it my all from the first to the last note. That’s how it’s supposed to be.”

Recorded in the mid-Nineties, ‘Blues For Daze’ became an out of print collectors piece. The band reformed in the fall of 2020, to record two new songs and their sound clearly remains the same on “Ready To Roll”, and Danny Vaughn shines with an acoustic version of “Riverside”, showing off not only his vocal chops, but also playing acoustic guitar and blues harp. Danny continues, “For a long time I have wondered if we would ever do a sequel so presenting this release with two brand new tracks gives this gem of a record some closure and is the sweet icing on the cake. Listen loudly!”

Fifteen tracks (fourteen self penned) make up this 2nd album from Haney's Big House who write 50's R&B and Jump Blues songs that sound as though they were written a generation ago. Stunning musicianship and catchy, dance-able songs in a vintage style.

Haney's Big House is a five-piece Rhythm & Blues combo playing in the traditional 40’s/50’s style. Their line-up of Drums, Double Bass, 2 guitars and Harmonica uses largely period-vintage instruments and equipment to create the authentic sound which is the essence of Haney’s Big House.

Whilst they are a relatively new band on the UK scene, they focus on bringing original material that doesn’t sound out of place alongside the classic sounds of old style Chicago and swinging West Coast blues. Named after the legendary 50s juke joint in Ferriday, Louisiana , they bring superb musicianship and a powerful driving sound to Jump Blues and Swing.

Since starting out in 2017, they have become favourites of both dancers and blues music lovers and their schedule has been pretty jam packed playing clubs, music festivals and vintage events throughout the UK.

Led by singer/guitarist Tommy Malone and accordionist John Magnie, the Subdudes draw most of their inspiration from the sounds of their native New Orleans, blending blues, gospel, funk, and R&B with their own harmony vocals; their sound is also notable for the band's substitution of a tambourine player for a drummer. The band came together after backing artists such as Joni Mitchell and Roseanne Cash, and released its eponymous debut in 1989. Like the group's subsequent albums (including 1991's Lucky, 1996's Primitive Streak, and 1997's Live at Last), The Subdudes featured a mix of covers and originals. After an eight-year sabbatical, the Subdudes joined Bob Dylan guitarist Freddy Koella to produce Miracle Mule in spring 2004. Keb' Mo' would be the producer for the band's 2006 effort, Behind the Levee, and Street Symphony would follow in 2007. ~Steve Huey

Today, more than 30 years after she got her humble start in the blues clubs in Houston, Lavelle White sings as well as she ever did, and though she's had time off from the road over the years, she's never stopped singing or writing songs. All of this is apparent with one listen to Miss Lavelle. The dignified manner in which White conducts herself on stage, dressed in flashy outfits and walking about confidently, is something that was instilled in her from an early age. This respect for the stage, or stage presence, that is apparent when Miss Lavelle White performs is something the younger generation of blues players (and many rock & rollers) seem to lack. /Richard Skelly, AllMusic

The urban rhythm and blues of the forties and early fifties was a piano and saxophone-emphasized music that - played mainly by extremely capable jazz musicians - was a dance and everyday music for the purely black going out audience. With the retreat of jazz from the dance floor to the concert stage and the triumph of rock n'roll, this extremely accessible variety of blues faded into the background. In Europe there are only a few specialists who are really familiar with this style. The electric guitar blues completely masked the audience's perception from the sixties.

After a small tour, organized by the Zürich promoter and saxophonist Duke Seidmann, with legends such as Red Holloway, Carrie Smith and the over eighty-year-old Jimmy Coe, the accompanying band, which was engaged ad hoc for the "Legends of Rhythm and Blues", decided to form a permanent group. The hard core of the Blue Flagships was together with the renowned arranger and pianist David Ruosch.

Are the Blue Flagships Europe's most swinging blues band or bluesiest swing band? That's the only point audiences and experts don't agree on fully yet. However, their special mix of 40's swing dance music and 50's R&B makes everybody instantaneously feel like dancing. Undeniable to pundits and connoisseurs, the band is one of the last to cope with that particular sound from the so-called "Truman era" (1945-53). As if proof was necessary, you'll usually find quite a few lindy hoppers at each public concert the band plays. This CD consists of compositions from Al Sears' band book and songs written by Jimmy "T99" Nelson.

Personnel: Tommie Harris (vocals); Red Holloway (tenor saxophone); Duke Seidman (alto & tenor saxophone); Tom Müller (baritone saxophone); Dave Rousch (piano); W-Tone Balker (guitar); Daniel Gugolz (double bass); Martin Meyer (drums).

10. Here I Am (4:27)
11. Feels Like I'm Drowning (3:22)

"Feels Like I'm Drowning" is Wendy's first full length CD released in 1998, and she wrote all but one of the eleven songs. The tunes are a fun mix of blues & groovy rock with a lot of spirit and 70s vibe. Most tracks feature various members of Wendy's longtime Tampa Bay area band Wendy & the Soulshakers.

A native Texan, Wendy was born and raised in a suburb of Houston, Texas and joined her first band at the age of 13. For several years she focused on rock music, playing in clubs in the Houston area and dabbling in recording. She joined her first blues band in 1989 shortly before she relocated to the Tampa Bay area of Florida. Since her arrival in 1990 to Florida, Wendy established herself quickly with her band Wendy & the Soulshakers, becoming a popular mainstay in the regional club & festival circuit.

Over the years she has taken her band on the road up the east coast and to Europe as well as self-producing 4 cds. In the year 2000 Wendy took some time off from the Soulshakers to tour as front person for the legendary Janis Joplin’s original band Big Brother & the Holding Company who continue to tour to this day with 3 out of 4 of the original members. She performed with them at various venues all over the US and Europe through 2004 and still occasionally makes appearances with them.

In 2009 Wendy journeyed to Nashville, TN to collaborate with producer Kevin McKendree (Delbert McClinton, Brian Setzer, John Oates) on a record entitled "Driver", which was never officially released due to some life circumstances that put Wendy’s music career on hold for a couple of years. In 2013, Wendy came back to music with a recording project in her hometown Houston, Texas working with Andy Bradley at the famed SugarHill Studios on the beginnings of a stellar new record.

Bradley enlisted the talents of Mark Andes (Heart, Firefall, Spirit), Kenny Cordray, Paul English and more. 2016 saw the release of the chart topping cd "It's All Nothing" which has received airplay on blues and country stations worldwide.

Ultimately, Jimmy decided to pursue his own project, specializing in preserving the old-school styles of his heroes. "Absolutely Blues! Live at the Boneyard" combines old songs with his very own new and original material, and this CD contains 8 originals and 5 classic gems. It incorporates the sounds of old-school blues playing, featuring the barrelhouse piano of John Burgh, as well as Adler's stingingly sweet slide guitar. The thumping rhythm section is created by the prominent bass stylings of Harry "Alley Cat" McCorkle and the driving drums of Randy Roth.

Combining powerful vocals with their considerable instrumental skills on piano and double bass, Memphis Slim and Willie Dixon made a formidable duo. These two albums were made for Folkways, thus presenting them to a white audience who were enthusiastically discovering the blues. The second LP was a live session from Greenwich Village s famous venue The Village Gate where they were joined on two songs by Pete Seeger.

The New Moon Jelly Roll Freedom Rockers Volume 2 is replete with the same instinctual camaraderie and musicianly savvy as its predecessor. Likewise culled from sessions recorded in 2007, this sequel is decidedly not comprised of mere leftovers or otherwise sub-par tracks originally left unreleased. On the contrary, the alternately upbeat and reflective atmosphere reaffirms the realism and presence of Kevin Houston's recording of these eleven cuts at the Zebra Ranch studios that were subsequently produced to authentic effect by this ad hoc band itself.

This whimsically named ensemble bonds through a shared devotion to the genre(s) they love. It should thus come as no surprise the deceptively informal outfit sounds as self-assured on the late Texas eclectic Doug Sahm's seminal Tex-Mex "She's About A Mover" as an the aptly-named original of harpist/vocalist Charlie Musselwhite' s that opens the album, "Blues For Yesterday." And the impact of their respective fusions of spirit and style are undeniable, no matter who's featured on any given track: the easy shuffle into which these six musicians slip for Jimbo Mathus' "Searchlight (Soon in the Morning)" kicks in just as this roughly fifty-some minutes begins to generate momentum and simultaneously also functions as an artful set-up to the melancholy likes of Charles Mingus' "Oh Lord Don't Let Them Atomic Bomb On Me."

If it wasn't already obvious at the point of this spotlight for the late pianist/vocalist/composer Jim Dickinson, the Jelly Roll Rockers are clearly not intimidated by stylist boundaries. On the contrary, the ensemble is inspired to leap them; this cover of the late jazz bassist/composer's tune precedes astute choices by comparably iconic blues figures: Junior Wells' "Messin' With The Kid" (often covered by the late great Irish bluesman Rory Gallagher), Jimmy Reed's "Can't Stand To See You Go" and Earl Hooker's "Blues Guitar."

And all those possess a palpable continuity with the Mississippi Sheiks' "Blues Is Mighty Bad Feeling." The deceptively off-the-cuff air on Vol. 2 most specifically precludes any sense of over-familiarity radiating from such numbers. Similarly crucial in that regard are the succinct arrangements that allow solos of piano, guitar or harp to serve the individual songs rather than placate the egos of the respective participants. A notable case in point happens to be the spotlight afforded guitarist Luther Dickinson on the instrumental "Blue Guitar," but all the participants play a role in distinguishing these performances, each in his own inimitable fashion.

Chicago blues veteran Musselwhite's ghostly "Black Water" supplies yet another expression of continuity here. Doleful and despairing, it doesn't clash with the generally high spirits of Vol. 2, but rather accentuates the contrasts in the two moods. The New Mooners not only display a shared facility to restrain themselves when it's called for, but they can also unleash a joyful abandon to equally good effect: hear Alvin Youngblood Hart as he leads them through the tongue-in- cheek likes of "Millionaire Blues (If Blues Was Money)." The younger Dickinson sibling, drummer/singer/washboardist Cody, bonds at various points with bassists Chris Chew (then of North Mississippi Allstars) and Paul Taylor, forming rotating rhythm sections that sound more ramshackle than they really are. ~Doug Collette

10. The Umbrella (8:23)
11. Kicked His Ass Out (1:44)

The promotional materials for Alafia Moon emphasize Fowler’s guitar prowess. And they should. Fowler’s got guitar game, proven by gorgeous slide lines crying out like a person. But he’s also got a soulful voice and is a strong songwriter, meaning you’re not hearing an album of hot licks, but rather a collection of full-blown songs.

Fowler is from Florida, but sings with a subtle New Orleans lilt, making him occasionally sound Dr. John-esque. He understands his range and works within it, focusing on the emotion of his performance, rather than trying to dazzle the listener like we’re American Idol judges. Fowler also mixes things up with his songwriting. Every song is blues rock based, but he explores plenty of styles within that larger one.

The title track is a ballad allowing Fowler to showcase his voice. There’s a bit of sandpaper to his singing, which helps reinforce the tune’s underlying sadness. But backup vocals add a celestial quality to the song, making it a Beauty and the Beast type of situation. And it’s a tie between the two until Fowler’s slide comes in, wave after wave of gorgeous melodies dazzling the listener, beauty triumphing. I tend to listen for the technique beneath the music to help myself understand songs. Is someone playing a lot of notes? A few notes? But with Fowler, I’m unable to focus on anything but melody.

Fowler also knows his way around up-tempo tunes. “Hip to Your Trip” bounces along with a peppy groove, providing plenty of space for Fowler’s voice and more of that addictive slide. When we think of slide, it’s easy to go straight to Duane Allman, who perfected it within straight rock and roll. But Allman played in a huge band that was always jamming hard. He had to battle for every inch of audio space if he wanted anyone to hear him. He also played at an incredible intensity. Fowler, especially on this track, doesn’t have to fight for anything, so the slide lines are Allman-esque, but sound less focused on cutting through the music and more content to lay back and stay with the song.

The album checks in at ten tracks, but one track, “The Umbrella” is a long monologue set to music that doesn’t lend itself to repeated listenings. It sets up the next song, “Kicked His Ass Out,” a funny 50s-inspired novelty tune sung by Betty Fox, Fowler’s vocals rumbling way in the background, that shows off some of Fowler’s impressive rockabilly playing. However, it mostly feels like it’s from a different record. It’s always a good sign when you wish an album had more music, though.

Fowler’s guitar work is the real deal, but he’s more than that. Alafia Moon is full of great songs and vocal performances. He’s made a true album and not backing tracks for showing off his considerable six-string skill. Instead, Alafia Moon shows off Fowler’s many, varied skills. The Review: 8.5/10 ~Steven Ovadia

GAËLLE BUSWEL, is a unique artist who leaves no one indifferent. Her exceptional voice will move you as it reaches straight for your soul. Her generosity of spirit, her spontaneity and her dazzling smile are irresistible. A prodigious performer, she has already more than 500 concerts across Europe under her belt as well as 2 North American tours.
In listening to her music, it is not surprising to learn that right from the very start this artist was drawn to folk rock and blues rock sung by husky-voiced singers. When you have the music of Led Zeppelin, Joe Cocker and Queen all playing in the nursery, with Neil Young and Janis Joplin for your childhood lullabies, you are bound to be drawn towards this fantastic mixture of complementary musical influences. As a teenager, she immersed herself completely in blues music, delving into the albums of Bonnie Raitt and Jonny Lang.

Starting from the age of 13, Gaëlle has been giving concerts throughout France, Belgium and England. Her fan base took off with the posting of a video of her covering a Tina Turner song. Leaving for London where she would spend several months playing solo and challenging herself to play at times in the Underground, Gaëlle is proof that music is indeed a way to bring people together. She would do this again in the Paris Metro, the unexpected result of which was being invited to perform in detention centers and children’s hospitals. These different experiences have all contributed to her evolution as a songwriter. It is at this time that people begin to compare her to artists such as Joan Baez and Melissa Etheridge.
Gaëlle composes most of her own material. The first songs were promising enough to lead to her first album, the acoustic folk rock “Yesterday’s Shadow”, recorded with the collaboration of Neil Black and released in 2012. Her second album, “Black to Blue”, released in November 2014 brought with it an ever-widening audience and 4 music awards. North America also welcomed her. She gave her first live radio on WFDU FM New York and was selected as “Artist of the Month” by the American webzine Concert Blogger. “Black to Blue” would keep her on tour around the world for over 2 and half years.

Best known for his decade-plus stint in support of Bobby "Blue" Bland, Mel Brown channeled elements of soul, funk, and jazz to create one of the most distinctive guitar styles in contemporary blues. Born October 7, 1939, in Jackson, MS, Brown received his first guitar at the age of 14 while battling meningitis, spending hours each day studying the music of idols like B.B. King and T-Bone Walker from his sickbed. His father, John Henry "Bubba" Brown, a gifted amateur guitarist who often backed Delta legend Tommy Johnson, was another seminal influence. After recovering from his illness, Brown joined the Duke Juniors, a teenaged spinoff of the popular local society band the Duke Huddleston Orchestra. Word of his prodigious abilities spread quickly throughout the region, and at 15, he played a series of gigs backing the great Sonny Boy Williamson.

After a brief stint in Los Angeles, Brown returned to Jackson in 1955, honing his skills under Huddleston before permanently settling in L.A. three years later. After a six-month stretch with West Coast R&B singer Jimmy Beasley, Brown spent two years backing R&B great Johnny Otis. In late 1960, he toured with the Olympics, followed by a two-year tour of duty with the great Etta James. Most significantly, while touring with James he swapped his Les Paul for a hollow-bodied Gibson ES-175, later crediting the instrument for the warm, rich tone that set him apart from rival guitarists.

By 1963 the grind of touring forced Brown off the road. He returned to L.A. and resumed his collaboration with Otis, enjoying an extended residency at the Club Sands. He also launched a session career, playing on records by everyone from Bobby Darin to Bill Cosby as well as T-Bone Walker's Funky Town LP. His contributions so impressed ABC/Impulse! producer Bob Thiele that he invited Brown to cut his own album for the label: 1967's Chicken Fat, a wonderfully greasy blues-funk outing pairing Brown with fellow guitarist Herb Ellis, remains a cult classic. A series of impressive LPs including The Wizard, I'd Rather Suck My Thumb, and Big Foot Country Gal followed in quick succession before Brown joined Bland in 1971, appearing on the singer's classic California Album two years later.

During his stint with Bland, the guitarist also moonlighted behind blues legends John Lee Hooker, Lightnin' Hopkins, and Roy Brown, and in 1976 he relocated to Nashville, where he maintained an even busier session schedule than in Los Angeles. Upon resuming his collaboration with Bland, Brown made the decision to temporarily abandon guitar in favor of the piano. He remained with the singer until 1982, putting his performing career on hiatus and moving to remote northeast Mississippi in an attempt to escape the music business.

Brown resurfaced in 1983 as a member of the house band at the legendary Austin, TX, blues joint Antone's. In the years to follow, he backed everyone from Buddy Guy to Stevie Ray Vaughan to Clifton Chenier. In 1986, he accepted Albert Collins' offer to join his band the Icebreakers, recording the acclaimed LP Cold Snap before returning to Antone's. In 1989, he resumed his solo career with If It's All Night, It's All Right, released on the club's eponymous label. A few months later Brown headlined the Kitchener, Ontario, venue the Pop-the-Gator Club, finding the experience so much to his liking that he relocated to Canada in early 1990. There he formed a new band, the Homewreckers, and steadily toured the southern Ontario nightclub circuit, finally reappearing on wax in 1998 as a guest on Snooky Pryor's Can't Stop Blowin'.

Brown's Electro-Fi label debut, Neck Bones & Caviar, followed a year later, winning the W.C. Handy Award for Blues Comeback of the Year. With 2000's co-headlined Double Shot!, he and Pryor earned a W.C. Handy nomination for Traditional Blues Album of the Year. The concert disc Homewreckin' Done Live followed a year later. After another five-year layoff from recording, Brown issued Blues: A Beautiful Thing in early 2006. /Biography by Jason Ankeny, AllMusic

Under this name, three professional musicians got together in autumn 1991 to play their favorite music: rousing boogie-woogie, cool jump'n jive and swinging jazz & blues. Countless appearances by Papa's Finest Boogie-Band have since shown that their musical mixture of brand new original compositions and beloved classics makes every audience immediately enthusiastic about the dance floor.

From the beginning the band has consistently followed its own path: The fusion of the virtuoso-authentic boogie-woogie of Meade "Lux" Lewis and Clarence "Pinetop" Smith with the rousing, groovy and danceable music of artists such as Louis Jordan, Ray Charles, Louis Prima or Fats Domino, enriched with a number of titles from their own pen, which combine modern influences with the fascination of the classics.

The continued success shows that this musical concept works perfectly: At every performance the band leaves behind enthusiastic listeners and sweaty boogie dancers - meanwhile their dedicated fan base travels to all guest performances - as well as the current CD "Papa's Finest Boogie-Band - Live" impresses critics and audiences alike.

Personnel: Volker Picard (double bass, vocals); Frank Spannaus (piano, vocals); Holger "Schlomo" Schütz (drums); Matthias Rüdiger (tenor saxophone).

James Nelson (April 7, 1919 – July 29, 2007), known as Jimmy "T99" Nelson, was an American jump blues and rhythm and blues shouter and songwriter. With a recording career that spanned over 50 years, Jimmy "T99" Nelson became a distinguished elder statesman of American music. His best known recordings are "T-99 Blues" and "Meet Me With Your Black Dress On". Nelson notably worked with Duke Robillard and Otis Grand. Nelson got his start singing in church. In 1941, he saw a performance by Big Joe Turner while he was visiting Oakland, California, and realized he wanted to sing the blues. Turner taught Nelson about singing, performance and the music business. Nelson, in turn, absorbed the shouting style of his mentor.

From 1951 through 1961, Jimmy Nelson and the Peter Rabbit Trio released eight singles with the Bihari Brothers' Modern/RPM label. The biggest of these was "T-99 Blues" (which referred to the old Texas Highway #99), which debuted in June 1951. It stayed on the US Billboard R&B chart for twenty-one weeks and reached number 1. In 1952, Nelson had another RPM hit with "Meet Me With Your Black Dress On." Nelson began touring, performing with bands led by Joe Liggins and Roy Milton, and playing venues including the Apollo and Howard theaters. He cut singles for a number of labels including Kent, Music City, Paradise and All Boy, and Chess (including for them the 1955 "Free and Easy Mind"). From 1955 to 1975, Nelson took a job working construction, though he continued to write songs and sit in with bands.

In the 1980s, Nelson came to the wider attention of blues fans when Ace issued ten of his sides on an album. Sweet Sugar Daddy a compilation album from the Japanese P-Vine Records, which mainly consisted of unreleased studio recordings from the 1960s and 1970s, was also released in 1988. Nelson resumed touring and in 1999, released a comeback album Rockin' and Shoutin' the Blues from the Bullseye Blues & Jazz label. This album was nominated in two categories of the W.C. Handy Awards the following year. Two more newly recorded albums followed on his own Nettie Marie label prior to his death, both featuring an all-star back-up band including Duke Robillard. In 2004, Ace released Cry Hard Luck, featuring re-issues of Nelson's Kent and RPM recordings from 1951-1961.

In 1955, Nelson married Nettie (who has since died) and adopted Houston, Texas as his hometown. Nelson died of cancer at a nursing home in Houston on July 29, 2007. On June 25, 2019, The New York Times Magazine listed Jimmy Nelson among hundreds of artists whose material was reportedly destroyed in the 2008 Universal fire. /Wikipedia

Digitally re-mastered two CD collection. Above all others, it was the great Muddy Waters who linked the country blues of his native Mississippi Delta with the urban blues that were born in Chicago. Waters bought his first electric guitar in 1944 and revolutionized the idiom with the recordings he began making in 1947. The Muddy Waters Blues Band bore all the earmarks - in terms of size , volume and attitude - of the great Rock 'N' Roll groups that would follow in it's wake. This quintessential collector's edition contains 55 re-mastered studio tracks, including all of the fabulous early singles - both A- & B-sides (except for "Sugar Sweet") - Muddy Waters made (accompanied by such masters as Little Walter, Junior Wells, Jimmy Rogers, Willie Dixon, and Otis Spann) for the Aristocrat and Chess Records labels, between 1947 and 1955. Waters' early repertoire, much of which is presented on this indispensable double-set, marks one of the most important building blocks of the Chicago Electric Blues style.

I am Lady D! They call me W.Va’s First Lady of Soul. From the age of three, singing is all that I ever wanted to do. So, that’s what I did. Like many little black girls, my first public singing experience was at church. I sang in the gospel choir from the age of seven till I graduated high school. Fun fact: I also sang in a community choir as a teenager that was directed by none other than Bishop T.D. Jakes. I went from the gospel choir to an R&B band and then marriage. This accounted for a major gap in my singing career. Almost twenty years later, I went back to college and got a bachelor’s degree in Communications. I started my own band and it’s been on ever since.

In 2003, I debuted my original one-woman stage play called “The Lady and the Empress” based on the life and music of blues legend, Bessie Smith. I recorded the soundtrack for that show, called “Nobody’s Bizness.” After having formed my band, MI$$ION, we went on to perform private parties and events. I recorded five more cds: MY TURN – 2006, SHE’S NOBODY – 2012, LADY D’S ROCK ‘N’ BLUES SAMPLER – 2012, REFLECTIONS – 2014 and DISTURBING MY PEACE – 2020. Did I mention that a few years back, my original song “Go Higher” was chosen as the best Obama Inaugural Song and Lady D and MI$$ION were invited to play at the Obama For Change Inaugural Ball in Washington D.C. in January 2009.

This, now 21 year career has included some other highlights and lows. Being the opening act for the O’Jays was very cool. I’ve performed up and down the eastern seaboard and with some notables such as blues great, Johnny Rawls and monster blues organist, Bruce Katz. I wrote a book of poetry called “Appalachian BluesSpeak” and I discovered the visual arts and began expressing myself through painting on fabric and canvas. I’ve organized my own jazz & blues festivals and hosted a blues radio show for six years.

2020 was the year of the major shift in my writing and consciousness and I released my newest studio album, “Disturbing My Peace.” This reflection of the events and collective emotional trauma that took place in that year is all laid bare in Disturbing My Peace. Now comes … re-invention.

Two calibers of singers exist in today’s music industry. There are vocalists and then there are entertainers. Laretha Weathersby is both. Her dynamic, effervescent stage presence is unparalleled and her sultry, wispy vibrato makes her a Blues natural.

Voted 2009-2010’s “Chicago Blues Diva of the Year,” she belts out traditional Blues classics with passion and poise and delivers riveting renditions of timeless R&B, Soul and Top 40 tunes, all while captivating crowds with her jovial disposition and dynamic dancing. Known for her rousing stage presence, crowd members rarely blink when Laretha hits the stage, fearing they will miss one of her signature dance moves or the chance to chant along with the charismatic chanteuse.

Reigning from the Southside of Chicago, Laretha’s mother, a former Gospel soloist, detected her daughter’s singing abilities and enrolled the toddler in piano classes and encouraged her as a teenager to be an active member of the choir at the family’s place of worship. But it was not until the 1990s that Laretha began to cultivate a personal relationship with Blues music.

Emerging as one of the premiere female Blues vocalists in the City of Chicago in the late 1990s, Laretha has performed at such legendary Blues hotspots as The Kingston Mines, BLUES on Halsted and since 2010 is a spectacular presence here at BLUE CHICAGO.

Her debut album – Dance the Blues Away – is an eclectic mix of traditional Blues infused with remnants of contemporary R&B and Soul. The album reveals Laretha’s reverence for conventional Blues music while flaunting her fluent transition into contemporary R & B and Soul.

According to Ms. Weathersby, “the power of Blues music lies in its ability to relate to each and every member of the human race. People of all different backgrounds can connect with the universal concepts of love, triumph and tribulation, which are the very elements upon which Blues music is based. I consider it an honor and joy to incorporate that human element into my live performances and it is with passion and humility that I accept the honor and challenge of preserving Blues music for future generations.”

For a music artist, perhaps now more than ever, it is hugely important to keep on focusing and nurturing the love for one of the most fascinating and diverse art-forms existing and still trying, at the same time. to make a point on the current state of our society and the extremely difficult and unique time of the world in which we are all living.

In that respect, someone like the American Blues artist Russell "The Hitman" Alexander, has always been a master in blending his talent as a guitar player and as a singer/songwriter with his cutthroat views on the state of modern society, analysing all its pros and cons together with his band of brothers and sisters, through that splendid music machine called The Hitman Blues Band.

From a creative point of view, it might have been very challenging for the band to find the best inspirational platform to follow the worldwide success received through the band's last studio album, called The World Moves On, back in 2016, for their new record.

But nothing is impossible to achieve, when sheer determination, creativity and talent run in an artist's veins; The Hitman Blues Band's new album, called Not My Circus, Not My Monkey, due to be released on 15th March, sees the American collective penning one of the most inspired, both from a musical and lyrical prospect, records of their career to date.

Not My Circus, Not My Monkey displays in full the strength and the sonic power of a band able to reach some very high musical standards, thanks to the strong, individual skills of each musician part of this fabulous collective and to the dynamic level of perfection that they achieve, on each of the songs included in The Hitman Blues Band's new record.

Most certainly, the collective's front-man and band-leader Russell "The Hitman" Alexander deserves high praises, for the success of The Hitman Blues Band's new musical chapter. Alexander's musicianship, as a guitarist, a lyricist and as a singer, has always exudes, especially in the last two decades, brilliancy and creativity of the highest level but frankly, Not My Circus, Not My Monkey surpasses anything that the American artist has delivered before, bringing his and the band's musical message to a newer and higher level of artistic excellence.

The Hitman Blues Band's new album, among many qualities, it balances also extremely well the new material written by Alexander with the three covers included in the album, two by Blind Willie Johnson (Nobody's Fault But Mine and John the Revelator) and one by Bob Dylan (The Times They Are-A Changin'), in order to fit the main theme of the album, about radical changes happening in our society and where do we stand, as human being.

Musically, the album is a joy to listen to, thanks to the shuffled, exciting layers of Chicago Blues, mixed with R&B, Boogie and Soul, bringing in an intriguing and fascinating sonic mixture in the new record, greatly executed in all its angles. Together with one of the best kick-ass Rhythm Section in the Blues business, brought by Mike Porter on bass and Guy LaFountaine on drums, Alexander adds to his personal music formula, on Not My Circus, Not My Monkey, also a Horns Section of first class, with Mikey Vitale on Alto Sax, John Kelly on Tenor Sax, Eric Altarac on Trumpet and Nick Cliifford on Bari Sax, giving to the whole record that Big Brass Blues Band groove that runs strongly, throughout the whole of the record.

Then last, but not least, there are Alexander's new songs; from the swaggering R&B opener that is Not My Circus through a song like Walk With You, a wild, foot-stomping, irresistible Boogie, going straight to the album's closing tune Go Down Fighting, an authentic 5/4 Blues/Rock hymn to an artist's determination of keep on fighting for his right of expressing musical talent, Not My Circus, Not My Monkey is an exquisite kermesse of class, creativity and inspiration in singing and song-writing.

About the latter, a very special mention needs to be written about a song like No Place Like Home, one of the finest songs ever written and sang by Russell Alexander. The song is a total masterclass in vocal delivery and lyrical intensity, where also the whole band shines in its entirety by creating a delicate sonic carpet, with a sublime work especially from Guy LaFountaine on drums and Adam Minkoff on Organ.

Through a record like Not My Circus, Not My Monkey, it is very safe to say that The Hitman Blues Band has not only released their personal masterpiece to date, as a collective, but also one of the most inspired Contemporary Blues records of 2021. ~Giovanni "Gio" Pilato

Giulio Allegretti (born 19 June 1986), better known by his stage name SPOOKYMAN is an Italian singer-songwriter, composer, multi-instrumentalist and he is known for his one man band show.

He uses to accompany his own voice with a guitar that he modified by substituting its deepest strings for the bass guitar ones. He uses pedals to beat drums, made of items found in old vintage markets: his bass-drum is truly an old suitcase in a coated board and a tin box for biscuits is instead of a snare-drum. He stresses tercets, octaves, sixteenths with a rusty charleston, and, sometimes, he enriches his compositions with samples pre recorded on a cassette, through a typical eighty's cassette recorder.

He uses to write songs inspired from gloomy and autobiographical texts, settled in marsh sceneries. He takes his inspiration from John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Bobby Bland, Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, but also from Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen, Black Keys. His music is a match between past and present, full of many shades in which the roots of Blues rules.

His search for unusual sonorities leads him to record his first work in studio only in 2016. The self-titled album, is made of thirteen original tracks and it includes some sharings that give some richness to the album, without taking it away from the stylistic choice of the artist: that of the one man band.

During his career, he collects hundreds of concerts around Europe in solo and occasionally, with other musicians. The experiences lived by the years increase in him the desire to change and in late 2019, he forms a band in support of his project called “The All Nighters” in reference to the typical expression "...all night long" used in many blues lyrics.

In 2020, the band project suffers a severe and forced arrest due to the Covid-19 pandemic. During the period of distance he made an agreement with the pianist and composer Simone Scifoni’s (Drummer and bassist of the project) record label BLOOS RECORDS with whom he co-produces the new album also with the involving of the guitarist Marco Di Folco and the harmonica player Andrea Di Giuseppe.

In June of the same year, he made a recording session in a house in the small village of Pozzaglia Sabina (RI). From those recordings comes the album "BLOOD SWEAT AND TEARS", a work of 10 unreleased songs that focuses on creating a snapshot in which art knows how to resist a historic moment that brings the world to its knees.

The album, a metaphor of the human being’s creative adaptation to the pandemic, is deliberately devoid of the audio definition that can be found in a studio record.

Since 2009, he has carried on with his musical project in more and several contexts: from the humblest pub to the clubs, theatres and national and international festivals, always with the usual resolution. He shared the stage with well-known artists such as The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Cody ChesnuTT, Eric Gales, Luke Winslow King, Pat Mother Blues Cohen, Eugene Chadbourne, Bob Log III, and others. Fond of testing and experimentation, he worked as a composer and a sound-track performer with several theatrical companies, directors and video-makers.

Since he was a child, he has developed a passion for art, the discipline that influences all his following studies, until he got a degree in painting, with full marks, at the Belle Arti Academy in Rome. From his early teenage years, he has found a key of expression even in music, has made up many bands, playing different genres of music: Grunge, Punk, New wave, Folk, Garage, Surf and Rockabilly, mostly playing pieces written by him. With some of these, he has recorded self produced albums and singles, performing above all in cooperatives and community centres. Once he finished to study, he has resolved to match his passions, by starting a musical journey, unusual and charming to him: dedicating himself to the figure of the one man band. He has been attending the blues scene in the S. Lorenzo quarter, in Rome; has been taking part to many Jam Sessions and has been privately studying Jazz and Gospel singing, at once.

Nowadays, in his house in Rome, he matches his creativity in music and his artistic inspiration to the simple but strong values belonging to his roots, always finding beauty in the smallest things.
