Celebrating ten years as one of hardest working bands in the mid-Atlantic area, contemporary blues/roots rock quartet, Jon Spear Band, are set to release their fourth album, B-Side Of My Life. Coming out of a lockdown that took the central Virginia band off the road and into the studio to record its third studio album allowed time to stretch out and explore new musical routes and journeys they call a collection of B-sides, like the old 45 records that sometimes yielded a surprise hit song. With a style built around the dual guitar attack of Jon Spear and Dara James, who share lead vocal duties with bass player Andy Burdetsky, while drummer John Stubblefield keeps the pulse deep in the pocket, they create a pallet of blues, funk, rock, soul, and Americana. Guest keyboardist, Skip Haga, added depth to the eleven new originals and two select covers that address a wide range of topics equally introspective and humorous in their scope.

Although Spear is the primary songwriter and the namesake of the band, he spreads around the lead vocals to suit the compositions as with the opening track “Big Talk,” a funk rocker about a man done wrong, followed by the Latin flavored “Heartbeat Like A Samba,” both sung with flair by James with his sparkling tenor. Spear then steps in to lead the band though the acoustic driven tale of meeting a traditional healer on a mountain top, who calmly gives us hope for the world in “The Shaman,” and the old-time rock ‘n’ roll title track that employs the metaphor of improbable hit records as a chance at redemption, and features barrelhouse piano from Haga. Burdetsky lays down a knee-deep bass groove for a faithful reading of Neville Brothers’ favorite “Yellow Moon.”

The mysterious and expansive “Follow The Light” pushes the group’s genre boundary far past the confines of a “Blues Band.” A gritty guitar lead matches the edgy vocals from Burdetsky on the driving reflection of the past year’s tumultuous times of a pandemic and mass protests during “Kick In The Head,” written by producer Andy Waldeck. James sings about his fear of creepy-crawly things on the jagged bumping “Snakes And Spiders,” but you get the feeling he isn’t talking about arachnids and reptiles but two-legged creatures that lurk in the shadows. The minor key rumble, “Can’t Have Nothing,” written and sung by Burdetsky, is a scathing examination of our so called “first world problems” of the modern west.

James sinks his teeth into the soul ballad “Darker Side,” from Jonny Lang’s debut album, delivering a stirring performance on lead guitar and vocals. Every middle-aged man can relate to the tale of an endearing pack rat “My Old T Shirts” and the fishing channel has a new theme song in the 70’s acid rock anthem about an angler’s obsession “The Muskie Grind.” Everyone gets into the act on album closer “Time For The Blues,” a swinging tribute to all the heroes past and present and the music that has brought so many of us together.

This fun-loving collection of B-sides from the Jon Spear Band is bound to bring joy to its listeners, if not a spot on the top of the charts. ~Rick J Bowen

“Live Music is Better” was recorded by the Jon Spear Band before a live audience at the Southern Café & Music Hall in Charlottesville VA on November 27, 2015. On that night, the band not only reprised some of their award-winning original songs from their first CD “Old Soul,” but also covered several red-hot blues songs in the imaginative style that has made them a favorite among a growing list of blues lovers.

The release of their 2nd CD caps off a year of increasing success for the Jon Spear Band which saw extensive airplay, numerous favorable reviews, and opportunities to appear with several major artists, while their first CD “Old Soul” captured the #24 spot on the Roots Music Report's Top Contemporary Blues Album Chart for 2015.

The personnel on the new CD includes special guests Haywood Giles on saxophone, and Adrian Duke on keyboard, along with the band’s core members: Dara James (vocals, guitar and harmonica), Andy Burdetsky (bass and backing vocals), John Stubblefield (drums) and Jon Spear (guitar and vocals). Adrian Duke – a semi-finalist at the 2016 International Blues Challenge – also lends his unique vocal talents to a rollicking New Orleans-style version of “I Love My Skin,” one of the award winning originals from the band’s first CD.

The title song of the album, “Live Music is Better,” is the band’s homage to all those who make live music possible including club owners and concert venues, hardworking musicians, stage and sound crews, local blues and other music societies and, most important, the fans who come out and support their favorite performers. As the song says: “Pay a DJ if you will, it don’t give the same thrill – Live Music is Better!”

The Jon Spear Band is a collaboration of some of Central Virginia's finest blues musicians, brought together by their love of the blues -- from searing emotional solos all the way to swing and funk, the Jon Spear Band covers it all. Dara James is an amazing young talent with outstanding vocal, guitar and harmonica skills far beyond his years. Bassist Andy Burdetsky has been playing bass for over 35 years. Andy was born and raised in the D.C. area where he was influenced by such great musicians as the Nighthawks, Danny Gatton and Charlie Byrd. Andy has shared the stage and/or sat in with such musical greats as Koko Taylor, NRBQ, Skip Castro, Roy Buchanan, Nils Lofgren and Stephen Stills -- and also currently plays with Fatty Lumpkin and the Love Hogs. Jon Spear doesn't admit how long he's been playing guitar but here's a hint: Jon's band opened for the Isley Brothers when Twist and Shout was still on the Top 40 charts. Since then, Jon has played with numerous bands has been influenced by such guitar greats as Hollywood Fats and Debbie Davies. Drummer Carl Moyer started playing drums in the school band at the age of ten and hasn`t stopped since. Eager to learn, he supplemented the school band instruction with private tutoring from long time jazz drummer Chuck Goodson. Influenced by a wide variety of music, he has played with bands covering a wide range of musical styles. Folks in the Central VA area may remember him as the drummer for bands such as Ironhorse, Whiskey Creek, and the Jimmy O Band. Carl currently also plays with the Bootsie Daniels Band. All of the band members are active in the Central Virginia Blues Society and strongly support CVBS's music functions.

After spending a month at Ravensworth Studios under the excellent direction of Andy Waldeck, the Jon Spear Band is releasing its first CD with nine out of ten original songs, and an extraordinary guest appearance by saxophonist Ron Holloway on the title cut, "Old Soul."
