Sven’s successful first solo album Blues From Within had been recorded at Pama Studios in Kristianopel, Sweden in 1998. Sven returned to Pama Studios the following year to record his next album. The musicians he had with him at the studio were Bosse Skoglund on drums, Matti Ollikainen on piano, Mikael Fahleryd on bass and Calle Engström on guitar. The recordings were never released at the time - but now, in 2022 when Sven would have celebrated his 70th birthday, it is the right time to release these superb recordings.

”Sven’s singing has the main role on the album Rain On – the songs I chose for the record especially lift his voice and his talent as a singer. Sven is sorely missed by his audiences in the Blues community, not only in Sweden but in the whole of the Blues world. It feels very special to be able to now release this album with Sven’s fantastic interpretations. The album consists of both original songs by Sven and some wonderful Blues classics. A precious detail is that Sven’s friend Mr Kim Wilson participated in completing the album with his harmonica on two of the songs”, says Katri Oksanen, the producer of the album.

Scandinavian bluesman Sven Zetterberg impressed Swedish audiences beginning in the early '70s with his guitar, harp, and raw soulful vocals. He was born in 1952 in Skärblacka, Sweden, and started playing harmonica at the age of 12 when he discovered the music of Little Walter. His first band, Telge Blues, was formed in 1972 and played the Swedish club scene for a number of years, followed by the formation of Sven Zetterberg & the Chicago Express. This band, for the better part of ten years, held the top position in the Swedish blues scene and recorded four albums - The Blue Solution (1990), Watch Your Step (1991), Permanently Blue (1995), and Steppin' Out (1996) - before breaking up. Through the years, Zetterberg learned from and played with a host of American blues greats who traveled through Scandinavia, including Jimmy Rogers, Sunnyland Slim, and Jimmy McCracklin.

In 1979, Zetterberg made his first trip to America, heading directly to Chicago, making further contacts with several important musicians. This culminated in the 1983 album Chicago Blues Meeting, featuring Sunnyland Slim and S.P. Leary. Zetterberg continued to tour and release discs, including his first solo recording, Blues from Within, issued by the Amigo label in 1999. Let Me Get Over It followed in spring 2001, and he remained prolific over the next decade and a half, releasing such albums as Moving in the Right Direction (2004), Southern Soul Agenda (2006), Hollerin' Up a Storm (2007), Grounded in Reality (2010), Mileage (2012), and Something for Everybody (2016). After concluding a Christmas tour in mid-December of 2016, Zetterberg died of heart failure in Stockholm on the 18th of that month. He was 64 years old. /Biography by Al Campbell, AllMusic

Telge Blues - Telge Blues

Size: 88,6 MB - 260 MB
Time: 37:25
File: MP3 @ 320K/s - Flac
Released: 1975
Styles: Harmonica blues
Art: Front

1. I Want Somebody (2:40)
2. No Title (3:54)
3. Wish Me Well (2:41)
4. My Time To Go (3:18)
5. Chittlin' Con Carne (2:57)
6. Take A Little Walk With Me (2:42)
7. Act Like You Love Me (3:18)
8. Mean Disposition (4:28)
9. Hard Road (4:26)
10. I Wish You Would (3:25)
11. Checkin' Up (3:32)

Zetterberg rose to local stardom in the 70's before earning international reverence in the 80's and beyond. Deservedly so, as he was a great harp blower, an even better guitarist and as years went by became one of the most soulful singers ever to come out of Sweden. Zetterberg moved from his native town of Skärblacka to Södertälje in the late 60's, and in 1972, he founded Telge Bluesorkester with excellent drummer Stefan ”Stoffe” Sundlöf among others. (Telge is an older name for Södertälje.) The following year the band did a session for the Tonkraft radio show, bringing the yet unsigned band to national attention. This in turn led to several commitments as support act to international blues stars visiting Sweden. In 1975, Telge Bluesorkester, with their name abbreviated to Telge Blues, Philips Records signed them for what was to become their only album. (For those taking notes, the drawbridge seen on the album cover is one of the best known local landmarks.) Although ”Telge Blues” can't compare with Zetterberg's later victories (his solo albums in particular), it's a rough and ready urban blues effort. Tracks like ”Wish Me Well” and Billy Boy Arnold's ”I Wish You Would” are too crude to make their point, but ”Act Like You Know Me”, ”Hard Road” and ”Checkin' Up” are credible enough. After the demise of Telge Blues, Zetterberg and Sundlöf went on to form Blue Fire who later changed their name to Chicago Express and became Sweden's prime blues band for fifteen years. Blue Fire were a more self-assured band and an all around more efficient machinery than Telge Blues. Zetterberg grew as a singer, and while his greatest achievements were still years ahead of him, his and the band's potential was already evident in slower numbers, ”Suicide Blues” in particular. ”Telge Blues” was the first ever album released on the Mistlur label, later home of Trettioåriga Kriget, Thomas Almqvist, Torkel Rasmusson and other progg acts, as well as several noted Swedish punk bands.

Bluesy vocalist and guitar man J. Åsling from the steamy south of Sweden unleashes a groove-infested collection of rootsy blues originals with his brand new knock-out band. All cuts were recorded in two days in Stockholm with very little rehearsal and post-production, resulting in the spontaneous feel of these hard-swinging "Stockholm Sessions", a crazy mix of blues, swamp and soul. Spectacular!

Although Swedish-born and —based saxophonist Jakob Norgren's orchestra has been making waves for several years, Volume 5 is only the second of its recordings to churn up the waters in this estuary. And churn them it does, even though Norgren's blend of R&B, soul, pop, blues and funk far outweighs the album's minimal jazz content.

Norgren's charts, we are told, encompass songs associated with Otis Redding, Beyonce, Etta James, O.V. Wright, Otis Rush and B.B. King, among others, a statement that must go unchallenged here, as none of those performers has earned a place in this listener's lexicon. To put it another way, Norgren's orchestra is swimming and splashing in uncharted waters, which makes a sober appraisal more perplexing than might otherwise be the case. That said, we shall plow ahead with the ardor of a Michael Phelps until that purpose has been achieved.

One thing is clear at the outset: Sweden boasts a surprisingly large number of singers who seem well-versed in these genres, as no less than eight are featured on the album's dozen tracks. Each of them sounds credible, even though that opinion must be tempered by a general unfamiliarity with the music. The last selection ("Well, I Done Got Over It") is especially poignant, as it showcases Sven Zetterberg, one of Sweden's most celebrated soul and blues musicians, who died last year at age sixty-four. The other vocalists are Kristina Talajic ("Love Addict"), Tad Robinson ("Baby, Don't Lose Your Cool"), Graciela Chin A Loi ("Love, Your Magic Spell Is Everywhere," "Suga Mama"), Marino Valle ("Down in the Valley," "That's How Strong My Love Is"), EllyEve ("All I Could Do Was Cry," "Don't Freeze on Me"), Linn Segolson ("Baby, Please Don't Go") and Knock-Out Greg ("You Don't Know," "Working Man").

While Norgren's charts are persuasive and the ensemble well-grounded, whatever splash the album makes rests on one's penchant for soul, blues and their close cousins, R&B and funk, as the album is by no means aimed at a jazz audience. For what it is, however, it seems to be quite well done. ~Jack Bowers

Jakob Norgren Big Band Splash was started in 2004 and on our first two albums Wide Meadow Soul (2005) and East Of The Arctic Circle (2007) we mixed contemporary jazz with soul, blues and even some electronica. In 2010 we shortened the name to just Big Band Splash and decided to let the band develope into a soul/rhythm & blues/soul-jazz orchestra, which was manifested on the album Another Apple. Contemporary jazz would instead be performed under the name Jakob Norgren Jazz Orchestra.

In 2014 we released (digital only) the album Big Band Splash – “The Soul Collection” where we gathered soul tracks from our first three albums. Featured singers are Sven Zetterberg, Marino Valle, Greta, Stella & Sunniva Bondesson (Baskery), Knock-Out Greg and Graciela Chin A Loi.

Scandinavian bluesman Sven Zetterberg has been impressing Swedish audiences since the early '70s with his guitar, harp, and raw soulful vocals. This is a must for all soul/blues lovers. Sven does it again, with more soul than blues this time. 16 tracks, 12 originals and 4 wonderful covers yielding almost 70 minutes of music. Zetterberg has a strong voice with earthy tones (a little reminiscent of Joe Cocker). Some of the cuts are densely textured with strings, horns and percussion as the genre requires. Others let the guitars come to the fore. There's excellent musicianship on this CD. Sven now works by borrowing musicians like the stellar blues man, Knockout Greg.

Talking about blues players outside America it's hard to leave out Sven Zetterberg, Sweden's most versatile artist in this field. Being both an excellent singer, guitarist, songwriter and harmonica player extraordinary, he has become a house-hold name all over Scandinavia. Unfortunately Sven has left us. But we still have all the memories and music, that he was a huge part of.

11. Looking Up (1:31)

What do you get when you combine traditional, Americanized blues and soul edged with modern flavor and interpreted through some of Sweden's most accomplished vocalists and musicians? If you don't know, now you know, because that's what you get an earful of when you encounter Another Apple.

A bold and brassy collection of songs and instrumentals led by saxophonist, arranger and producer, Jakob Norgren, the collection is deliciously diverse, combining delicate tones of a flute buttressed by brassy horns and a smattering of Auto-Tune in the catchy "East of the Funk" and honing in on the paralyzing pain of a lovelorn rebound victim in "You Used Me Baby" (sung liltingly by Sven Zetterberg). "Walk a Mile In My Shoes," sung by John Nemeth, is its rollicking opening number, soon followed by Greta Bondesson's "I Had a Fight With Love," which smacks of a 70s-era Betty Wright jam in its mix of knowledge and naiveté. The spirited big band stylings of "That's What Happens" takes the edge off its resolute "told you so" message (delivered by Marino Valle). "Esso" is a sax-anchored instrumental soaked in traditional down-home stateside blues, and "Valerie" is (unintentionally?) comical in its detour from a typical "I miss you" type of song to its wagging a finger at the behavior that eased her out of his life to begin with: "Did you have to go to jail? Put your house up out for sale/did you get a good lawyer?"

Far from traditional, but never boring, Another Apple is part big band, part jazz and steeped in unmistakable elements of R&B. If you're open-minded and ready to leave the expected American approach behind for some Swedish-flavored soul, Big Band Splash's Another Apple delivers. /Melody Charles

Various Artists - All That Blues From Sweden! Vol. 1&2

Swedish blues lives, is vital, and is developing. Stylistically, the breadth is great - rhythm and blues, southern soul-spiced blues, boogie woogie, shuffles, juke joint blues, bittersweet slow blues, jump blues, traditional country blues, and even country blues at top speed with a punk attitude. Songs, tempos, and feelings which give rise to everything from partying on down with two more pints from the bar, to sitting in a corner with your tears diluting a tightly clenched glass of whiskey. As Jimi Hendrix once said, "The blues is easy to play, but hard to feel". /Excerpt from the liner notes for All That Blues From Sweden! Vol. 2

Rita Engedalen is often referred to as "Norway’s Queen of the Blues". Engedalen creates and performs her own music and is thoroughly genuine. "Chapels And Bars" is Rita Engedalen’s 4th album. Of her previous albums Engedalen has won the Norwegian Grammy award for the album “Heaven Ain’t Ready For Me Yet” and she was also nominated for a Grammy for her last album, "The Tree Still Standing". Rita Engedalen has built a large audience through an impressive series of festival appearances and touring at home and abroad. So it is with good reason that she is often referred to as Norway’s Queen of the Blues. The brand new album Chapels And Bars consists mainly of newly written original material and was released in connection with the Notodden Blues Festival in early August 2011.

Musical guests on the album include names such as Bjørn Berge, Tuva L. Syvertsen (Valkyrien Allstars), Knut Hem (Hem Strengelag, Reidar Larsen) and Margit Bakken (Women In Blues) and the Swedish blues champion Sven Zetterberg. Stringmachine Bjørn Berge also contributes to the album with great guitar playing and his powerful singing on the title song "Chapels And Bars". Sven Zetterberg contributes with soulful singing and wonderful harmonica in a version of Rita’s concert favorite "Ball And Chain". The guest list is topped by a gospel choir from Mississippi. It was a dream come true when Engedalen traveled to Mississippi and recorded the song “Holy Land” with Coahoma Community College Choir. All these wonderful guest appearences contributes to make Chapels And Bars Rita Engedalen’s most varied and consistent album release to date.

In 2010 Rita Engedalen was awarded the prestigious honor Notodden Blues Festival Blues Award. In the same year, Rita also received the prestigious “Gammleng Prize” awarded by the Fund for Performing Artists in Norway. During this year’s Kongsberg Jazz Festival Rita Engedalen, as the second woman in history, was awarded “Kongsberg City of Merit”.

Anders Lewén, born October 4, 1970 in Uppsala, Sweden, is a Swedish composer, musician and producer.

Established as a guitarist in soul and blues , and often hired by American artists on tour in Europe, including the James Harman and Jackie Payne . On the Swedish scene he is seen often confused with the Sven Zetterberg and with this he has also recorded and produced a number of albums , including the Grammy -nominated Let Me Get Over It (2001) , and Grounded In Reality (2010) . Has played guitar in the English pianist Mike Sanchez Band. 2011 was acclaimed as a composer and guitarist with his music for the computer game Battlefield: Bad Company 2 , and web magazine Kotaku gave him the title " The Man Responsible gaming 's hottest tune" . He has written music for numerous international commercials, including Victoria 's Secret , Lanvin and Nestlé . Started in 2007 the band The Beat From Palookaville.

James King was born in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, in 1955. When he was a child he sang in a gospel choir, just like in perfect “blues fairy tales”. At 7 he ran all over the southern United States in tour with them. At that time someone gave him a guitar that he soon learned to tame! At 12 he joined a band called "Old Ship of Zion" and he recorded his first album. The young James had not only talent but was particularly versatile, he began to travel, every place a band, sometimes more than one! In Birmingham he joined "The Chosen Five Singers" an with them he’d been touring around United States. Then he came back in Mississippi where played with great artists such as Little Milton, BB King, Freddie King, Little Willy and many others.
