Mel Melton & The Wicked Mojos - Swamp Slinger

Size: 114,8 MB
Time: 49:06
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 1997
Styles: Swamp Blues, Louisiana Blues
Art: Full

01. Cher Catin (3:22)
02. Opelousa's Blues (4:27)
03. French Quarter Rain (6:29)
04. Love Attack (4:39)
05. Devil Moon (6:11)
06. Two Lives (4:56)
07. Catahoula (4:30)
08. Chicago Train (4:51)
09. Backdoor Cajun Man (4:46)
10. Swamp Slinger (4:50)

This fine disc cooks and simmers with the flavors of the Louisiana swamps. Mel Melton has a slight rasp in his voice that adds that extra bit of spice that brings out the true flavors of this music. His voice isn't exceptional, but it is very well suited to the songs on the disc. The Wicked Mojos are a tight group that back him quite well, moving effortlessly from the slow blues of a song like "French Quarter Rain" through some real dust-ups like "Backdoor Cajun Man," making stops to go back to some Chicago blues and some fine zydeco raves. Melton's harmonica playing blends itself to fit the needs of the song, and the Wicked Mojos are given ample chances to display their licks. Used to seriously push the music to another level are slide guitar whiz Sonny Landreth and zydeco accordionist C.J. Chenier, both of whom Melton had once played with in a band called Bayou Rhythm. The multi-talented Melton has written eight of the 11 songs here, reflecting the variety of his musical influences. Two of the other songs are traditional, and the remaining song is the wonderful "Devil Moon," written by Randy Friel, who contributed production and some welcome organ, accordion, and clavinet playing. This is a disc to bring back (if you've been there) or to introduce you to the rhythms of the swamps of Louisiana. ~Bob Gottlieb

C. J. Chenier (born Clayton Joseph Thompson, September 28, 1957 in Port Arthur, Texas) is the Creole son of the Grammy Award-winning "King of Zydeco", Louisiana musician, Clifton Chenier. In 1987, Chenier followed in his father's footsteps and led his father's band as an accordion performer and singer of zydeco, a blend of cajun and creole music. With five previous albums to his credit, by 1994, Chenier began to record for Chicago-based Alligator Records.

A zydeco firebrand and his band bring a modern touch to zydeco, adding elements of blues, R&B and rock 'n' roll. The result is infectious and joyful, and terrific to dance to. Won the Living Blues magazine Award for Best Zydeco Album of the Year.

C.J. Chenier - Can't Sit Down

It's not easy to be the son of a famous musician, especially when that musician was the pinnacle of a genre. But C.J. Chenier, son of the great Clifton Chenier (the King of Zydeco), does a great job of following in his father's footsteps. He rocks up the zydeco a little more, and spreads the field a little wider, covering Tom Waits and Curtis Mayfield, as well connecting the short space between zydeco and blues with versions of "Baby Please Don't Go" and John Lee Hooker's "Dusty Road." There's a nod to history in a Boozoo Chavis classic, "Paper in My Shoe," and fiery versions of two songs by Clifton Chenier, where he exorcizes his ghost even as he pays homage. There are three of his own compositions, where he shows himself very much in the zydeco historical line, but on this album, at least, it's about the songs as much as the dance music, laying out his territory and establishing himself in his own right, away from the famous shadow. He's an excellent instrumentalist, one who knows how to use the accordion to the best effect in the music, and he has a crack band (including a guitar player who takes some sizzling, concise solos). Even on disc he works up a sweat -- live he must be quite something. This is an album that fully establishes him as a mature artist, with plenty to say, and the expression to say it. ~Chris Nickson

One of radio's best music shows brings you the very best in Louisiana music on this collection from Blue Plate. Marcia Ball, queen of New Orleans good time blues, does a jumping "La-Ti-Da." There's Cajun music aplenty with the newer sounds of Jo-El Sonnier and Wayne Toups, as well as the traditional reels of Beausoleil. Queen Ida and C J Chenier give you a healthy dose of Zydeco and, naturally, there's a taste of Dixieland from the Dirty Dozen and the Olympia Brass Band. For those who like it on the cutting edge, the Subdudes and Sonny Landreth (killer slide guitar!) are also on hand. As they say in Louisiana, it's "always for pleasure" ... that ain't no lie! ~Lars Gandil

One of the many jazzmen who started out playing hard bop but went electric during the fusion era, Joe Sample was, in the late '50s, a founding member of the Jazz Crusaders along with trombonist Wayne Henderson, tenor saxman Wilton Felder, and drummer Stix Hooper. The Crusaders' debt to Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers wasn't hard to miss -- except that the L.A.-based unit had no trumpeter, and became known for its unique tenor/trombone front line. Sample, a hard-swinging player who could handle chordal and modal/scalar improvisation equally well, stuck to the acoustic piano during The Crusaders' early years -- but would place greater emphasis on electric keyboards when the band turned to jazz-funk in the early '70s and dropped "Jazz" from its name. Though he'd recorded as a trio pianist on 1969's obscure Fancy Dance, 1978's Rainbow Seeker was often described as his first album as a leader. In contrast to the gritty music The Crusaders became known for, Sample's own albums on MCA and, later, Warner Bros. and PRA have generally favored a very lyrical and introspective jazz-pop approach. ~Bio by Alex Henderson

In 1999 Joe Sample moved back to his hometown of Houston, Texas and rediscovered the “la la music” that was so much a part of his youth. Cajun accordion, Mississippi and Texas Delta Blues, and some good old Texas two step, all conspiring to create what Joe refers to as, Creole Folk Music.

Creole Joe Band features Joe Sample on accordion and the legendary Ray Parker Jr. on guitar & vocals. Also featuring from New Orleans: vocalist Erica Falls, drummer Raymond Weber, scrubboardist and vocalist Alex McDonald; guitarist June Yamaguchi; fellow Houstonian Skip Nallia on keyboards; and his son, Nick Sample on bass and vocals.

The Creole Joe Band: a crazy and colorful reflection of their collective musical backgrounds is sure to put a smile on your face and a jump in your step.
