In the late 1980s and 1990s, The Senders were one of the most popular jump blues and R&B bands in the Twin Cities (Minneapolis-St. Paul). Originally formed out of the backup band for Lynwood Slim, three remaining original members, Dave "Cool Breeze" Brown (guitar and vocals), Mark Asche (piano) and Bill Black (bass) found new members on trombone, saxophones and drums. On their first CD, "Bar Room Blues" they asked Wendy Rene (from Bee Hive) on vocals. Later on she was replaced by Charmin Michelle. Dave Brown's musical career started more than 25 years ago where his T. Bone Walker influenced guitar and Wynonie Harris influenced vocals landed him a job backing up Mojo Buford. He went on to play with most of the blues musicians in the Twin Cities and in the mid '80's formed the band the Bee's Knees which was a precursor to the Senders. Long before the current swing dance craze swept through the area, the Senders were playing the same music that ranked them as one of the premier swing and jump blues attractions in the state. The Senders play jump blues and R&B popularized by the likes of Louis Jordan, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Red Prysock, Roy Brown and Little Milton. Their powerful big band sound can literally raise the roof with a vengeance and the female's voice can seduce you as they slow the pace down with a sultry jazz number. This is potent stuff played with gritty authenticity and sizzling charm. The Senders have backed a share of R&B Legends on stage; a short list includes Lowell Fulson, Big Jay McNeely, Johnny Adams and even boogie man John Lee Hooker.
