A compilation of music by six relatively unknown Dallas-based blues guitarist singers. Recorded in 1997, the current CD was released in 2010 and includes bonus tracks omitted from the initial release. The total time of the 15-track CD is 69+ minutes. The main appeal of the CD is the chance to hear six guitarist / singers that you probably have not otherwise heard. Indeed, most of these artists were only known locally in the DFW area and toiled for years there in the bars and clubs. But do not let the relative obscurity of the artists deter you from checking out this CD; the quality of the performances is pretty good.

7. Rock Me (3:40)
8. Chunky (2:51)
9. Hold On Woman (3:39)
10. Booting (3:23)

U.P. Wilson may not offer anything new with Booting, his fifth effort for JSP, but it's nevertheless an entertaining listen for anybody who's enjoyed his previous records. Everything that's made those albums exciting - the gospel-inflected, soulful singing, the stinging guitar solos - is here, along with the very same things that make them frustrating (namely, really, really clean production). So if there aren't any surprises, there are still enough highlights to make it a good listen for the already converted. /Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AllMusic

U.P. Wilson - Texas Blues Party Vol. 1: Live At Schooner's

8. One Hand Blues (7:21)
9. The Thrill Is Gone (4:33)

Wilson was born in Shreveport, LA, but was raised in West Dallas. His earliest influences were from gospel music he heard in church, but he learned the blues from an outstanding group of musicians that included Zuzu Bollin, Frankie Lee Sims, Cat Man Fleming, Mercy Baby, and others. He eventually settled in Fort Worth and started a band called the Boogie Chillun with drummer/vocalist Robert Ealey. While playing music at night, with Ealey and other musicians, Wilson supported his family by working as a school janitor during the day.

This is a great live set recorded in the early 90's at Schooner's in Dallas, featuring Wilson with Dallas singer/guitarist Tutu Jones. When they say Texas blues they think of Freddie King, SRV, Albert Collins - I think of U.P. Wilson. The man deserves more exposure!

Personnel: U.P. Wilson (vocals, guitar); Tutu Jones (vocals, guitar); Herb Abs (bass); Tyrone Starks (drums).

A living blues legend - U.P. Wilson - was in London. He'd cut some superb Texas-recorded albums for JSP. Here was a chance for another - there was too much talent in one place.
With U.P. is his friend Steve Meek and then London-based bassist and bandleader Big Joe Turner (also playing superb organ here). Most of the sidemen are from Jordan Patterson’s fine band. Listen for Jordan on harmonica.
This is the studio U.P. - serious, industrious and creative, all the stage 'showbiz' put to one side. Note the variety of his musical approaches. From slow to rocking down-home blues, a jazzy instrumental and some of U.P.s trademark flourishes. All uniquely Texan.

JSP Records was founded on the basic idea of recording blues artists that had fresh ideas, not ones who were simply rehashing their hits from the 1950s and 1960s. John Stedman was interested in hearing new songs and comments on today, not memoirs of long ago pasts. Because of this, JSP has recorded some of the true visionaires of the blues world and also some of its most flamboyant characters. Cats like Champion Jack Dupree, Lefty Dizz, Carey Bell, Guitar Shorty and Louisiana Red all found their way into the JSP recording studios. (Excerpt from the liner notes.)

This 18-track budget-priced compilation features an uptempo collection of tracks from the vaults of the British JSP firm, who long have recorded visiting American blues artists with varying results. The highlights this time are numerous and the quality stays high -- as all compilations should be -- but several are worthy of special mention. Phillip Walker with Otis Grand do a nice opening turn with "Don't Leave Me Baby," and Carey Bell checks in with a live rendition of Little Walter's "Leaving in the Morning (I Got to Go)" as well as a nice duet with son Lurrie on "The Gladys Shuffle," and Buddy Guy is rockin' with "Girl You're Nice and Clean." Little Willie Littlefield checks in with some two-fisted piano boogie on "(Sit Right Down And) Cry over You," U.P. Wilson contributes a nice instrumental in "Half Step" and a scorching shuffle with "Need the Need," Johnny "Big Moose" Walker takes it back home with "Rambling Woman," Guitar Shorty contributes two tracks with Otis Grand, and Hubert Sumlin's vocal on "Look Don't Touch" is both mellow and affecting. This compilation also includes tracks by Charlie Sayles, Phil Guy, Johnny Mars, Larry Garner, Byther Smith, Tre', and Tutu Jones. With a 77-minute running time and excellent liner notes from Bill Dahl, this is one blues compilation that's a solid value for the money. ~Review by Cub Koda

U.P. Wilson - Live At The 100 Club 1998

10. The Sun Is Shining (7:30)

Fort Worth-based guitarist, singer and songwriter U.P. Wilson plays a startlingly refreshing style of deep Southern soul-blues that is gospel inflected and rural, yet urban. His very rhythmic guitar playing is showcased on three albums for JSP Records, and it appears that after years of being known as a regional performer around Texas, Wilson is ready to take his show on the road. Wilson has recorded three albums for the London-based JSP Records -- Boogie Boy: Return of the Texas Tornado in 1994, This Is U.P. Wilson (1995), and Whirlwind, a 1996 release. Wilson also has two early-'90s recordings for the small Texas labels Red Lightnin' and Double Trouble.

Raised in West Dallas, Wilson learned his craft in the rough and tumble beer joints around the South and West Sides of the city, taking his cues from the likes of ZuZu Bollin, Cat Man Fleming, Frankie Lee Sims, Mercy Baby and Nappy "Chin" Evans. Wilson moved from Dallas to Fort Worth and formed a band called the Boogie Chillun with drummer and vocalist Robert Ealey. Later, he worked with Cornell Dupree before Dupree left to become a favorite session guitarist.

By the late 1970s, Wilson and Ealey were frequenting a Fort Worth club called the New Bluebird, where they were attracting ever-growing legions of true Texas blues fans. Wilson began recording locally in 1987 and touring again around Texas. Since the mid-'90s release of his JSP albums, Wilson and his band have toured regionally around the South, pleasing audiences with his inventiveness, clever songwriting, great arrangements and sheer originality. He returned in 1999 with On My Way. ~Biography by Richard Skelly

U.P. WILSON - Wild Texas Guitar / On My Way

Huary Perry Wilson's given name soon mutated into the easier to pronounce U.P. Born in Louisiana, he began playing around Dallas and Fort Worth as a teenager, in company with Zuzu Bollin, Nappy Chin and Robert Ealey. With the latter he formed a guitar-and-drum duo, the Boogie Chillun Boys. In the '80s Wilson's tough music acquired a new audience in Europe. U.P. Wilson's music incorporates many elements of South-western blues, among them the juke-joint rowdiness of Frankie Lee Sims, high-speed note-spinning which recalls Pee Wee Crayton, and the more sophisticated sounds of Lowell Fulson and T-Bone Walker. Nevertheless, Wilson was an original whose music, songwriting and showmanship had been honed by years of competitive gigging in the rougher parts of town, and he made few concessions to the expectations of white audiences.

Notes: Indeed, 'On My Way', originally released for local consumption on the bassist's label Pee Wee Records and this same year (1988) by British label Red Lightnin', has more covers, and of more obvious songs, than do later releases. It's a respectable effort - U.P. even manages to inject passion into 'Mean Old World' - but it's also the first of several CDs to prove that horns and keyboards do Wilson's music no favours. His aggressive playing and singing are best heard fronting a bare-bones rhythm section, not reclining on a bed of harmonies. To the original album, Fedora have added two live tracks recorded with the band of Texas harmonica ace Paul Orta, the churning shuffle and a staple of U.P.'s live act, where he keeps his guitar on the back burner, giving full rein to the power of his vocals.
