Evidently it must be difficult to grab the attention of blues fans without this type of eye-catching gimmick. Well, as far as the music goes, If This Is Love...I'd Rather Have the Blues contains 13 decent previously released tracks from Blind Pig Records with a heartbreak, romance, and don't-get-caught theme including LLoyd Jones, Jimmy Thackery & the Drivers, Debbie Davis, Studebaker John & the Hawks, Renee Austin, John Mooney, Big Bill Morganfield, and Chris Cain. Let's hope labels like Blind Pig will stick to signing passionate blues players and releasing budget-priced comps to attract listeners without the need to use sexy promotional campaigns. ~ by Al Campbell

E.C. Scott is sassy and bold, like Nina Simone and Etta James wrapped into one, following in the footsteps of the long tradition of great women rhythm and blues singers. As legendary Atlantic Records producer Jerry Wexler describes her, she is an "honest to God soul singer". On this album it is clear to see how much E.C., rooted in soul and gospel, has matured as a songwriter and singer of classic R & B.

E.C. Scott is a superior blues and soul singer who is in prime form throughout this set. She is also a talented and witty lyricist, as can be heard on her tribute to "Money" (which should become a standard), "He Ate the Apple," and a song called "This Ain't Yo Daddy's Kind of Blues." Scott's band, Smoke, supports her perfectly, with Bill Ireton contributing some blazing guitar solos. Little Milton makes guest appearances on "Just One of Those Days" and "If I Can Borrow Some of Your Love," but E.C. Scott is certainly strong enough to carry this set by herself. The Other Side of Me is one of her finest and most stirring recordings to date.

Awesome Debut!

I personally passed over this sensational recording in stores for two or three years, thinking "Never heard of her." Then after I received her second CD as a gift, and liked it reasonably well,I purchased the first one and "Wow." For a debut CD by an unknown artist, this one is sensational! If you don't get up off your seat and start rocking the moment you hear the intro to the title cut, then you are not a blues fan, or even a music fan for that matter. Hats off to EC's background band on that cut. A later cut, "You Got the Wrong Number" features some excellent boogie woogie piano and some of the most clever lyrics around, as EC tells the story of catching her husband red-handed. The truth is there is not a weak cut on this CD, and I am sorry I did not give it a chance sooner. The follow-up release "Hard Act to Follow" is exactly that because EC will never top herself. But please don't stop trying!

Soul singer extraordinaire E.C. Scott comes back from her 1995 debut with perhaps even a stronger album the second time at bat. Ten of the 11 tunes on here emanate from her prolific pen (the only cover is her interpretation of the Eurythmics' "Missionary Man"), and her earthy, engaging style is heard to great effect on the opener, "Steppin' Out on a Saturday Night," the bouncy shuffle "Don't Touch Me," the slow blues "Lyin' and Cheatin'" and the title track. Her time is impeccable, her phrasing straight and true, and every vocal on here is chock full of deep feeling; as a modern-day example of a soul-blues album, this one's about as good as the form gets. ~by Cub Koda

E.C. Scott has a voice that is perfect for the 1960s soul/R&B-type songs that she performs. She has plenty of power, is in tune, is quite expressive, and shows an impressive amount of versatility. On the modestly titled Masterpiece, which is a bluish R&B set, the singer wrote or co-wrote all but one of the dozen songs. Scott stars throughout the program (including sometimes overdubbing her voice as a "choir"), is assisted by a fine cast of musicians, and on "Too Good to Keep to Myself" shows that she can excel as a pure blues singer too.
