Turn back the clocks ten years, and US-based rock and soul outfit Vintage Trouble was riding high on the crest of a wave catalysed by the release of their debut album ‘The Bomb Shelter Sessions’ and a now legendary appearance on Later with Jools Holland on the BBC. The latter triggered the start of a love affair between the UK and the California based quartet, which kept the band on our British shores for the best part of 2011.

Despite its success, ‘The Bomb Shelter Sessions’ was never meant to be an actual album; but rather demos that the group could sell at their shows. Produced on a modest budget (not much more than pizza and beers), ‘The Bomb Shelter Sessions’ captured a special time in the early days of the band’s career.

Shortly after their debut release, Vintage Trouble went into the studio to record what they intended to be their sophomore album. The band laid down many live favourites. However, for one reason or another, the album never came to fruition. Subsequently, the group unveiled a different second album via their first major-label release, ‘1 Hopeful Rd’. The latter was recorded under the auspices of Don Was and Blue Note/Universal Records.

For many years, the question has been asked of the band, what happened to those elusive early recordings? Well, after a decade, the wait is almost over. On October 15th, Vintage Trouble will finally release a new album, ‘Juke Joint Gems’ – a collection of songs from the band’s early recording sessions featuring a whole raft of previously unreleased rarities and live favourites from a decade gone by. The tracklisting on the album features everything that the band’s fans – “The Troublemakers” would hope to find on an album dating from this era.

The inclusion of the old favourite, “World’s Got To Take A Turnaround”, feels even more relevant now than it did when it was first composed. Furthermore, tracks such as “Let It Not Be So” and “Lover Leave Me Be” are so rare and highly sought after that they were only performed on a handful of occasions in the UK. Whilst the likes of “24-7-365 Satisfaction Man”, “Get It”, and “You Saved Me” are enough to wistfully transport any of the band’s loyal fanbase back to those memorable nights when the group first arrived in the UK.

Vintage Trouble walks a fine line between blues, rock, and soul music. The group’s versatility has allowed them to perform alongside artists as diverse as AC/DC, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Gov’t Mule, Lenny Kravitz, Joss Stone, Paloma Faith, along with a whole lot more. Vintage Trouble has been described as “Live wired, straight shootin’, dirty mouth’d, pelvis pushing juke music”, and the inclusion of songs such as “Red Handed” and “Low Down Dirty Dog” are a testament to this.

Whilst the band’s sound may have evolved over the last decade, ‘Juke Joint Gems’ is Vintage Trouble at their rawest. This long-awaited collection of songs provides the missing link between ‘The Bomb Shelter Sessions’ and ‘1 Hopeful Rd’. The release may be nostalgic for some and new for others, but most importantly, ‘Juke Joint Gems’ is incredibly enjoyable for all from start to finish. ~Adam Kennedy

Vintage Trouble - The Bomb Shelter Sessions

Size: 99,7 MB
Time: 42:23
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2010
Styles: Blues Soul
Art: Full

01. Blues Hand Me Down (3:45)
02. Still And Always Will (3:23)
03. Nancy Lee (3:41)
04. Gracefully (3:38)
05. You Better Believe It (4:10)
06. Not Alright By Me (3:20)
07. Nobody Told Me (4:36)
08. Jezzebella (4:00)
09. Total Strangers (3:34)
10. Run Outta You (8:13)

Looking more like 30-something session bods than the hot young street-walking cheetah teens one might expect of a much-hyped new act, Vintage Trouble are here to reactivate the stomping vibe of 1960’s R&B – rather like Geno Washington, hero of that ace Dexys Midnight Runners anthem, did in London’s "sweaty clubs" in the late-70s.

Formed in Hollywood, recorded in upscale Laurel Canyon, and represented by Doc McGhee, a legendary manager previously behind such mega-acts as Mötley Crüe, KISS and James Brown, there is a sense of ‘fait accompli’ about VT’s swift rise. A rousingly kinetic appearance on Later with Jools Holland served as an eyebrow-raising introduction to these shores, followed by tours supporting Brian May and Bon Jovi. Certainly well-connected, these fellas.

This debut record kicks off energetically with Blues Hand Me Down (their Later… song), in the vein of Led Zeppelin II – loud, heavy, yowling, with substantial guitar solos, but also naggingly generic. Is there a point, you gradually wonder, to a combo cutting their own material today which is so squarely according to the specific codes of R&B past? Gracefully, a Solomon Burke-style ballad, is so slavishly Atlantic Records 1966, it’s actually an obstacle to feeling its emotional impact. A shame, because Ty Taylor sings with all the gravelly conviction of Otis Redding – again, though, he seems never quite destined to rise above that reference, and genuinely move you.

On the plus side, VT’s sound is raw and warm and enveloping – the kind of delectably twangin’ blues hum which seduces innumerable millions around the world into buying American beer via TV adverts. They have, thus far, a couple of outstanding songs – the achingly world-weary Nobody Told Me and the Chuck Berry-riffed, call-and-response belter Nancy Lee – but these won’t be sufficient to blow away the post-millennial pop fluff from the charts’ upper echelons, as doubtless had been projected in their marketing meetings.

Where Vintage Trouble are bound for glory (like Geno, who never sold any records whatsoever), is onstage. Live, these four’s energy and enthusiasm for the cause is far less resistible, with or without an accompanying King of Beers. In short: go see ‘em instead. ~Review by Andrew Perry

Echoing the vintage blues-rock of Chuck Berry and Led Zeppelin, and the timeless soul of Otis Redding and Sam Cooke, The Bomb Shelter Sessions is Californian four-piece Vintage Trouble's attempt to re-create the era of vinyl records and juke joints. Produced by Rogers Masson (Daughtry, Day of Fire), and recorded live in just three days at the Bomb Shelter studios in Laurel Canyon, its 11 retro tracks, described by James Brown-esque frontman Ty Taylor as "primitive soul," include the singles "Nancy Lee" and "Nobody Told Me." ~ Jon O'Brien

Recording information: Bomb Shelter Studios, Los Angeles, CA (2010).

Nalle Colt (vocals, guitars); Richard Danielson (vocals, drums, percussion); Rick Barrio Dill, Ty Taylor (vocals); Charlie Brumbly (harmonica, background vocals).
