Big Boy Bloater & His Southside Stompers are playing late 1940's, early 1950's rhythm & blues in a Louis Jordan meets Louis Prima style and they love this music. They play gigs to packed houses all over the UK and Europe, providing outstanding entertainment to audiences who are, for the most part, far too young to have had any first-hand experience of the 1950s. They go to see the band because they know that they are guaranteed to have a great night out.

This long awaited album contains 15 tracks of no-nonsense good-time rhythm & blues. A great mixture of cover versions with half a dozen of the band's own numbers thrown in. These studio performances do capture some of that Bloater magic that everyone who has seen them live will know all too well. It's Jumpin' Rhythm & Blues!

Following on from 2016’s Luxury Hobo, Surrey born Bloater re-focusses himself and Pills is a reflection of him having a clearer head. Recorded in December 2017 with producer Adam Whalley, the band trimmed down to a power trio of Big Boy Bloater (Vocals/Guitar), Matt Cowley (Drums) and Steven Oates (Bass) for the new album and it kicks off with the rip-roaring title track Pills, an extension from the previous album and highlights the constant need for pills today but has a sinister edge.

More than ever, the band effortlessly flit through styles and pace creating an album full of depth, emotion, humour, anger and sheer fun, all the time keeping the thread that makes Big Boy Bloater & The LiMiTs such a unique proposition. Pills marks an even more ambitious direction for The LiMiTs, combining a melting pot of ideas beyond its blues roots and entwines Bloater's dark humour and personal experiences.

[4:14] 8. Only Fools Know Everything
[4:25] 9. More Than A Million
[3:14] 10. You Don't Know Diddley

One voice, one guitar, and a box of tricks makes the blues shiver and shake. Big Boy Bloater’s youthful good looks bely the fact that he’s been fronting rhythm and blues bands since his teenage years in the 1980s. The experience gained from playing dives one night and supporting legends the next has made him a force to be reckoned with in the British blues scene, as his most recent band album, The World Explained showed. But, he’s decided to take a sharp left turn to create a solo album that celebrates the sound he grew up listening to, and making it so raw I swear I saw blood coming out of the speakers.

I can’t think of a more suitable opening track than Rufus Thomas’s "Bear Cat" (which owes a lot to "Hound Dog"!) to open Loopy. Bloater's whisky-soaked rasp, which comes from the pit of his ample stomach, coupled with some gutsy electric guitar playing, make the song very much his own. He does it again, later, with a scary interpretation of Leiber and Stoller’s "Alligator Wine". The fact that those two great songs don’t really stand out proves what a clever songwriter and performer Bloater is. "Every Path Has Its Puddle" opens with his guitar creating a thunderclap, followed by the box of tricks that keeps the atmosphere dark and moody. The singer begs "her" for a "kiss and a cuddle / but every path has its puddle / a pretty girl like you is going to get me in trouble." This, for me, is a song that epitomises the blues.

I’m not sure what purists and pedants will make of the looping machine that is used throughout the album, but I absolutely love the way Bloater uses it to breathe new life into a classic formula, especially on his signature tune "Double Whammy". He makes it sound like something you would have heard in a Louisiana juke joint on a Saturday night, instead of the R&B rocker that fans will be used to. It’s a similar story with the funky "Only Fools Know Everything" and "You Don’t Know Diddley", which sounds like something Bo himself would have been proud of in his latter years. Even as a fan of Big Boy Bloater, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the sound he’s created here. It certainly is a sound that I haven’t heard in a very long time. ~Harrisonaphotos

A legend on the Rockin' Scene, Bloater's 6 piece R&B band - The Southside Stompers - are among the most credible swingin' blues-jumpin' sax honkin' boogie-piano pumpin' bands around. Bloater also fronts 'The City Shakers', focusing on a more stripped down Chicago style blues. He's got a giant voice that brings to mind the early R&B greats, a powerful-but-tasteful dynamic guitar style, and charismatic stage presence.

If you like authentic late 40's rhythm & blues in the Louis Jordan meets Louis Prima fashion, you will love this cd. Big Boy Bloater has a Big Joe turner sounding voice (but it's uniquely his own), and his wife who also contributes a few vocals and honking saxaphone, she sings in the classic Ruth Brown style (but with more of a Bessie Smith tone, and yet her vocie is also unique and her own). The 6 piece band is tight and really jumps, making it popular with both jitterbug & lindy hop dancers as well as rock'n'roll jivers and blues boppers. A great jazz, and jump blues sound, with a rocking beat. This band sounds better then many of the "neo-swing" style bands from the late 90's. A great jump band from Europe, that plays Viva Las Vegas occasioanlly.

thank you mrwalker.
