The Micronite Filters are releasing their new album Chasing Ghosts on January 29th. From Get Bent records, this album represents deep Southern Blues. Surprisingly these guys aren’t from the Delta, but are actually from Canada.
The Micronite Filters traveled down to the birthplace of blues and rock and roll, Memphis, TN and Southern Mississippi to record this record. They decided upon the name Chasing Ghosts because they were chasing the ghosts of the blues’ founding fathers. Recording with producer Jimbo Mathus from The Squirrel Nut Zippers, Buddy Guy, and the Tri-State Coalition, Mathus helped to create this gritty album.
Chasing Ghosts opens with “The Ballad of the Banker’s Son.” In this song, unique sounds can be heard from the percussion section. The horns bring a New Orleans sound to this tune. “Chasing Ghosts” has an old school sound, but is complimented by a funky guitar. The horn solo in this tune is very sultry. ‘Walking Dead Man” begins slow but builds up. The piano in this song is what really sets it apart from the rest. You can really feel the emotion in this song. “The Ballad of the Exile and the Canary” is one of the most interesting songs on the album. It starts with drums and bass but then is accompanied by an electric fading in and out, making an almost scratching sound before erupting. The song slows down giving you a chance to really concentrate on the keys and wonderfully screeching guitar.
The Micronite Filters are a band to keep an eye on. They are able to take old school blues and mix with a new school sound. Release shows are currently happening in Canada. The Review: 8.5/10 ~Review by Dana Ainsworth
