The Hoochies have been involved in the blues circuit for a while now. The band, which consists of some very renowned blues musicians, knows how to surprise its audience with their infectious music. Singer harmonica player Richard Koster might be known from his association with The Cuban Heels and Billy and The Blues Demons, in which he collaborated with Hans van Lier. Nowadays you can find him on stage next to The Hoochies with The Goshhawks and The Blues Busters.
Together with Roelof Meijeringh he is the pivot of the band. As a guitarist, Roelof already has a solid track record. His passionate guitar playing has for many years been instrumental in the sound of the Boyd Small band, with which he played at the Waterfront Blues Festival in Oregon, Portland. But Memo Gonzalez also liked to use his services as a guitarist. Both gentlemen have a very solid and experienced rhythm section, with Roland 'Lut' Luttik (Drippin 'Honey, Jack of Hearts, Oscar Benton Blues Band) on the bass and Chiel ten Vaarwerk (Cuban Heels) on the percussion. very good hands.
Now, five years after the band was formed, their debut album is suddenly released there. A Live album that is. Last May 4 the band was programmed at the Moulin blues festival where the recordings of this disc were recorded. The recordings are now available as a debut album for fans. "Live! Moulin Blues" does their raw, energetic and unpolished blues justice. The Hoochies kick off with Gutbucket, a track that could also be found on The Cuban Heels' latest eponymous album. It is immediately clear what to expect, raw, unpolished blues that are never far from the work of the Red Devils. Richard Koster's voice is even reminiscent of Lester Butler, and he also blows his lungs out of the body, as appears on the tracks No Fighting and the steamy boogie Backstreet Crawler.
Both soloists complement each other perfectly and provide one highlight to another in Let's Get High. After the slightly quieter, but no less groovy Rubber Band, Roelof Meijering puts down an guitar intro on Anytime You Want that immediately reminds you of the master of the Boogie, John Lee Hooker and then takes you in So Unfair towards the Paladins, this is partly due to the fact that 'Lut' Luttik plays the low notes on contra bass on this track. Enough to experience on this album. The tempo is tightened up in Mambo Boogie, who floats on a pounding boogie groove and where Koster once again shows us that he has mastered the harp to the finest detail.
In The Hook a leading role is played by Roelof Meijeringh, who occasionally lashes and beats his guitar in a 'Hendrixian way' and then switches with equal ease to solid authentic Chicago blues in Double Trouble. With a scorching performance of I Was Fooled/She Fooled Me, this very successful live recording comes to an end. These guys do not allow themselves and their audience to rest for a moment. The train keeps crashing and that is what these men are good at and where they come into their own. Live, on stage where they manage to sell their steaming blues with conviction. Actually, we knew that for a long time with the release of 'Live! Moulin Blues' this has now been recorded for eternity. /Martin van der Velde
