The 20th child of a Mississippi sharecropper family and a commanding voice of the Civil Rights Movement, Fannie Lou Hamer (1917–1977) stood tall against the brutality, indignities, and intimidation of implacable racism. She harnessed her mother’s gifts of song and plain-spoken wisdom to steel her fellow seekers of social justice, the cause to which she gave her life. Songs My Mother Taught Me, a re-release of limited-edition 1963 field recordings, breathes new life into Fannie Lou Hamer’s inspiring legacy and her uncompromising call for a righteous world. 47 minutes, 32-page booklet with photos. This recording is the eighth release in the Smithsonian Folkways African American Legacy Series, co-presented with the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.

The Love Dogs' Recipe for The Blues: Take one red hot horn section - we're talkin' alto, tenor, baritone saxes and trombone - down and dirty. Add liberal amounts of barrelhouse boogie woogie piano and stinging Fender guitar. Pour over a funky and swinging rhythm section that Blues Review magazine called 'the best in the business', and top it all off with a crazy and charismatic front man with one of the biggest blues voices around. Season with a few years on the road tearing up juke joints, festivals and concert halls across the U.S. and Canada and on both sides of the Atlantic. Sound tasty? It's a recipe for music and mayhem, for intensity and irreverence, it's The Love Dogs.

Based out of Boston, this hard blowing septet just celebrated it's tenth year wowing audiences and critics alike with their combination of great musicianship and pure fun. The Dogs combine elements of jump blues, New Orleans R&B and early rock 'n' roll into their own powerhouse sound. You can hear it loud and clear on their three Tone-Cool cds 'I'm Yo Dog' (1996), 'Heavy Petting' (1998) and 'New Tricks' (2000). Many of the cuts from these three discs have been blues radio favorites, several of the Dogs' signature original songs have been used in feature films and on television, and one has even been sampled for use on the upcoming Run-DMC CD!

But as much fun as the Dogs' studio discs are, it's nothing compared to seeing them live. FMQB magazine called Love Dogs' concerts 'the stuff of legend' where 'soulful vocals, killer grooves, unpredictability and pure entertainment play equal parts'. With their brand new CD 'Live And On Fire' The Love Dogs have finally captured the unbridled energy of their live show on disc. Far from a live retread of previously recorded tunes, 'Live And On Fire' features ten brand new tracks captured live on a summer weekend at the famous Sea Note nightclub on the outskirts of Boston.

Personnel: Eddie "Duato" Scheer (lead vocals); Alizon Lissance (keyboards, vocals); Myanna (alto & tenor sax, vocals); Glenn Shambroom (guitar, baritone sax); Randy Bramwell (bass, vocals); Steve Brown (drums, vocals); Mark Paquin (tenor sax, trombone). Special guest: "Sax" Gordon Beagle (tenor & baritone sax).

His songwriting has continuously developed, and through the album's multifaceted production he manages to transport the songs into different sound worlds that immerse the listener in different scenarios. Many of the songs on the album reflect the big themes of life: love, death, fear and hope.

Recorded February 10th and 11th,1983 at Bunkerstudio, Bad Wildungen, FRG.

Louisiana Red (born Iverson Minter) was a flamboyant guitarist, harmonica player, and vocalist. He lost his parents early in life through multiple tragedies; his mother died of pneumonia a week after his birth, and his father was lynched by the Klu Klux Klan when he was five.
Red began recording for Chess in 1949, then joined the Army. After his discharge, he played with John Lee Hooker in Detroit for almost two years in the late '50s, and continued through the '60s and '70s with recording sessions for Chess, Checker, Atlas, Glover, Roulette, L&R, and Tomato, among others.

Louisiana Red moved to Hanover, Germany in 1981, and maintained a busy recording and performing schedule through the subsequent decades into the new millennium, his 21st century releases including 2001's Driftin' on Earwig, 2002's A Different Shade of Red on Severn, 2004's Bad Case of the Blues on Mojo Tone, 2005's No Turn on Red on Hightone and Hot Sauce on Red Lightnin', and 2008's Back to the Black Bayou (recorded in Norway with producer/guitarist Little Victor) on Ruf. He died in Germany in 2012 when his thyroid imbalance brought on a stroke. ~Ron Wynn

13. Ellen B (Bonus) (1:11)

From the first few bars of this CD you know The Bellhops have a winner. Big band blues with power and class. Good confident vocals, strong instrumental skills and genre-stretching arrangements are also what you get. The production from A#Sharp Studios’ Jeff Cripps is noteworthy for clarity and presence. Having seen these guys live I know they can replicate the recording with audience pleasing performances. The covers have been done too many times before. Nonetheless The Bellhops make mouldy song like “I’m Ready”, “C.C.Rider”, Personal Manager” and “Got My Mojo Working” come alive with their enthusiasm and arranging skills.

Muddy Waters’ “I’m Ready” has gone from malevolent Chicago Blues to big band romp, with solos from saxman Steve O’Connell, guess pianist Don Hopkins and slide guitarist John Russell (who wrote most of the originals). Likewise “C.C.Rider” romps along, fuelled by slide guitar and Steve Trew’s amplified harp solos. “Personal Manager” sticks closely to Albert King’s original version with sax, slide and harp solo. “Mojo” is some-how brought to life as a funk workout.

The original numbers shine and sound like instant classics. “Red Eyes” is a stop-time big band singalong with a harp and brass break. This and other swing and Jazz based tracks would not be possible without the wonderful bass of Mark Roulston and the sharp drumming of Steve Lovarini. Most Vocals are taken by rhythm guitarist Ian Dittman. He takes the lead on “Down On The Avenue”, a swinging number where the whole band chime in on the faster choruses. Ian also sings “Shake Dem Bones”, which sounds like a Louis Jordan number gone swampy. His best vocals are on the slow blues “Criminal of Love” – one of those tracks where the audience collectively close eye sand sway. It features a brilliant but brief sax solo.

“I Don’t Boogie On Sunday” could have been written by Moon Mullican; it has that swinging rockabilly feel. Steve Trew handles the raunchier vocals and comes across a little like Kim Wilson. In fact his number could be the lost Fabulous Thunderbirds takes with brass added. Steve sings “I Got Saved” with real venom. It’s a song with a twist - when his women left him he was “saved from a life without alcohol or cigarettes”. This is great album. Blues top party to. Even the liner notes are worth talking about. They are written in poorly translated mock Eastern European and Decorated in lounge music manner. And leave this disc in the player if you want to hear a bonus snippet of traditional slide. /Greg Crooks

Arriving as Ruf Records marks its 30th anniversary and more than three decades since blues guitar master Bernard Allison debuted on record, Luther’s Blues celebrates the music of Bernard’s father Luther Allison, a true legend of the Chicago blues and a central figure in the label’s history. The two-disc set features 20 stellar tracks from Bernard Allison, each one a Luther Allison composition previously released on one of Bernard’s many albums. Allison himself hand-picked the songs for the collection, which have been lovingly remastered by Pauler Acoustics, a renowned address in the audiophile scene.

Anyone who’s ever attended a Bernard Allison concert or listened to his recordings knows how much it means to him to keep his father’s musical legacy alive. “I made a promise since day one – to myself and to my mom Fannie Mae Allison – that I’d always include at least one or two of my dad’s songs on every album I record,” he says. Bernard has delivered on that promise throughout his career, performing Luther’s songs both at concerts and on record, while forging a funky and more rock-oriented style that differs from the traditional blues he grew up around. His dad supported him while he was still finding his own musical voice, openly encouraging him to “play it how you feel it” rather than copy what came before.

Thus, on Luther’s Blues, you’ll hear 20 Luther Allison songs reinvented for the 21st century by a member of the blues generation that followed him. They’re not necessarily Luther’s most famous tunes; when putting together any new album, says Bernard, he often goes for “songs that were overlooked on each (of my father’s albums) and then put my own twist on them.”

The track list spans exactly 30 years, from “Hang On” – recorded in Paris in the summer of 1992, when Allison was in his mid-20s – to a pair of cuts from his most recent studio album Highs & Lows, which hit #1 on the Billboard Blues Chart in 2022 and earned a Blues Rock Album of the Year nomination at the Blues Music Awards. His interpretations of enduring Luther Allison-penned tunes like “Bad Love,” “Life Is A Bitch” and “Let’s Try It Again” are included, and while we may think of these songs as classics today, Bernard Allison has played a huge role in keeping them in our collective consciousness. That’s especially true of “Serious,” a Luther Allison favorite first released in 1987. His son calls it “that special song that I perform every night” and believes it is his father’s most popular song across the world.

The 20-song Luther’s Blues is not the first album to pay tribute to the late, great Luther Allison. It’s not the first album to bear that simple two-word title. What makes this collection different is that it comes from Luther’s own progeny – Bernard Allison, a lifelong musician who soaked up blues traditions during his youth in Chicago, later followed his dad to Europe, became the leader of the Luther Allison Band and eventually made his own way, creating exciting new sounds for a new generation. All along, he has never once lost sight of where he came from. /Blues Magazine

He may not be a household name, but die-hard blues fans know Little Milton as a superb all-around electric bluesman -- a soulful singer, an evocative guitarist, an accomplished songwriter, and a skillful bandleader. He's often compared to the legendary B.B. King -- as well as Bobby "Blue" Bland -- for the way his signature style combines soul, blues, and R&B, a mixture that helped make him one of the biggest-selling bluesmen of the '60s (even if he's not as well-remembered as King). As time progressed, his music grew more and more orchestrated, with strings and horns galore. He maintained a steadily active recording career all the way from his 1953 debut on Sam Phillips' legendary Sun label, with his stunning longevity including notable stints at Chess (where he found his greatest commercial success), Stax, and Malaco.

James Milton Campbell was born September 7, 1934, in the small Delta town of Inverness, MS, and grew up in Greenville. (He would later legally drop the "James" after learning of a half-brother with the same name.) His father Big Milton, a farmer, was a local blues musician, and Milton also grew up listening to the Grand Ole Opry radio program. At age 12, he began playing the guitar and saved up money from odd jobs to buy his own instrument from a mail-order catalog. By 15, he was performing for pay in local clubs and bars, influenced chiefly by T-Bone Walker but also by proto-rock & roll jump blues shouters. He made a substantial impression on other area musicians, even getting a chance to back Sonny Boy Williamson II, and caught the attention of R&B great Ike Turner, who was doubling as a talent scout for Sam Phillips at Sun. Turner introduced the still-teenaged Little Milton to Phillips, who signed him to a contract in 1953. With Turner's band backing him, Milton's Sun sides tried a little bit of everything -- he hadn't developed a signature style as of yet, but he did have a boundless youthful energy that made these early recordings some of his most exciting and rewarding. Unfortunately, none of them were hits, and Milton's association with Sun was over by the end of 1954. He set about forming his own band, which waxed one single for the small Meteor label in 1957, before picking up and moving to St. Louis in 1958.

In St. Louis, Milton befriended DJ Bob Lyons, who helped him record a demo in a bid to land a deal on Mercury. The label passed, and the two set up their own label, christened Bobbin. Little Milton's Bobbin singles finally started to attract some more widespread attention, particularly "I'm a Lonely Man," which sold 60,000 copies despite being the very first release on a small label. As head of A&R, Milton brought artists like Albert King and Fontella Bass into the Bobbin fold, and with such a high roster caliber, the label soon struck a distribution arrangement with the legendary Chess Records. Milton himself switched over to the Chess subsidiary Checker in 1961, and it was there that he would settle on his trademark soul-inflected, B.B. King-influenced style. Initially a moderate success, Milton had his big breakthrough with 1965's "We're Gonna Make It," which hit number one on the R&B charts thanks to its resonance with the civil rights movement. "We're Gonna Make It" kicked off a successful string of R&B chart singles that occasionally reached the Top Ten, highlighted by "Who's Cheating Who?," "Grits Ain't Groceries," "If Walls Could Talk," "Baby I Love You," and "Feel So Bad," among others.

The death of Leonard Chess in 1969 threw his label into disarray, and Little Milton eventually left Checker in 1971 and signed with the Memphis-based soul label Stax (also the home of his former protégé Albert King). At Stax, Milton began expanding his studio sound, adding bigger horn and string sections and spotlighting his soulful vocals more than traditional blues. Further hits followed in songs like "Annie Mae's Cafe," "Little Bluebird," "That's What Love Will Make You Do," and "Walkin' the Back Streets and Cryin'," but generally not with the same magnitude of old. Stax went bankrupt in 1975, upon which point Little Milton moved to the TK/Glades label, which was better known for its funk and disco acts. His recordings there were full-blown crossover affairs, which made "Friend of Mine" a minor success, but that label soon went out of business as well. Milton spent some time in limbo; he recorded one album for MCA in 1983 called Age Ain't Nothin' But a Number, and the following year found a home with Malaco, which sustained the careers of quite a few old-school Southern soul and blues artists. During his tenure at Malaco, Milton debuted the song that would become his latter-day anthem, the bar band staple "The Blues Is Alright," which was also widely popular with European blues fans. Milton recorded frequently and steadily for Malaco, issuing 13 albums under their aegis by the end of the millennium. In 1988, he won the W.C. Handy Award for Blues Entertainer of the Year, and was also inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame.

Point Blank, probably, the first real blues band in former Yugoslavia, enough honest and brave to dive deep into the blues idiom at the time which was over piled with music so much different from blues, as well as fighting against, for so, so long, firmly established opinion that Balkans couldn't cope with such kind of feelings arose from dark depths of American black society's spiritual tradition. English language finally cemented down the prejudice, casting away an idea to playing blues music as already highly respected form of musical expression. But..., as always happens, something was creeping out from the cellar!

The very beginning of the summer 1983 found Dragoljub Crncevic-Baki, the prodigal son, and two, the off-road pals of his, one Timothy Davis an American, the other Michael Sulc an Australian, coming to visit Baki's hometown Belgrade, in which somewhere in shadows languished Dragan Markovic, a. k. a. Mare di Luna, waiting for an opportunity to knock!
That summer was good as any other, and almost out of nothing came out the very first true YU blues outfit, Dr. Project - Point Blank. During that summer, Dr. Project - Point Blank boasted quite a reputation as a blues group through live appearances, which led to an idea of recording the very first YU LP in English, entirely self composed, which would range from bottleneck to all-electric city blues based on Chicago and Detroit downtown guitar styles. Again, as usually happens, drummer Michael Sulc got homesick and left. Not long after that another fine drummer, Miroljub Vilotijevic, was augmented to the group. The wheels started turning...!

Mr. Djordje Debac, musical producer of PGP-RTB, was wise enough, after listening to demo, for not longer than five minutes, to give the group their first contract. The necessary time for recording in studio came along.

The very outfit, mentioned above, comprising of D. Crncevic-Baki (vocal, guitars), D. Markovic (guitars), Timothy Davis (vocals, bass) and M. Vilotijevic (drums, percussion), brought out their first born and gave him his Christian name, The Blues!

After, by critics, well received first album and public acclaim, Point Blank proved, for the first time in the history of YU rock, that English language and musical expression in its blues form couldn't have been a barrier for approaching wider audience.

That fact opened the door to formation of the steady blues scene first in Belgrade, then in other cities like Novi Sad, Nis, Zagreb, etc. Finally blues became incorporated into Yugoslav musical body for good. At the time of the first LP Timothy Davis unfortunately left, and was briefly replaced by the newcomer Sasa Labudovic. However, by second album group's direction was begining to shift away from the blues as evidenced in numbers such as Glass Rider and Sisters of Mercy, as well as experimenting with rhythm in Broken Toillette's Seat Blues, showing necessary complexity in arrangements throughout the material. Well composed, arranged and imaginative, Dr. Project - Point Blank, the second album remains possibly the finest Point Blank's album to date.

In late summer 1986, not long after very successful Mid-European tour, due to internal stresses D. Markovic departed to form his own group, Di Luna Blues Band, which is doing well since then. Replacement was found in Aleksandar Kozakijevich with whome band kept on constant gigging across former Yugoslavia. By the end of 1991 along came well known crissis. Yugoslavia was splitted and the band fell apart altogether. Point Blank went down into a period of hibernation.

During 1995 and 1996, Point Blank came out as trio, D. Crncevic (vocal, guitars) with R. Bulatovic (bass) and M. Karlovic (drums), cutting rather disappointing, Southern Comfort, their third album, falling apart for the second time after a handful of gigs.

In attempt to put up Point Blank on its feet again, D. Crncevic gathered completely new outfit consisting of one time member A. Kozakijevich (guitar), D. Grujic (keyboards), D. Petrovic (bass), G. Ilic (drums), (who replaced B. Balos), with the addition of the third guitarist B. Milosevic.

This lineup recorded much improved Sunny Sky, the fourth album, by the end of summer 1997. In that formation Point Blank has been touring Yugoslavia, Macedonia and Italy during 1997 and 1998. Not long after Christmas 1998 all members left except keyboards player Darko Grujic and founder member Dragoljub Crncevic. Two young musicians were brought in, Zoran Milenkovic on bass and Jovan Pejcinovic on drums, which rounded up new, rejuvenated quartet, ready to bite down hard! After a couple of months of rehearsing during 2000 this new formation occupied studio, for a week’s time during December the same year, and recorded excellent LP having John O'Leary, prominent British harmonica hero, as a guest.

Boys, wish you the best luck ever!

Dr. Feelgood was the ultimate working band. From their formation in 1971 to lead vocalist Lee Brilleaux's untimely death in 1994, the group never left the road, playing hundreds of gigs every year. Throughout their entire career, Dr. Feelgood never left simple, hard-driving rock & roll behind, and their devotion to the blues and R&B earned them a devoted fan base. That following first emerged in the mid-'70s when Dr. Feelgood became the leader of the second wave of pub rockers. Unlike Brinsley Schwarz, the laid-back leaders of the pub rock scene, Dr. Feelgood were devoted to edgy, Stonesy rock & roll, and their sweaty live shows -- powered by Brilleaux's intense singing and guitarist Wilko Johnson's muscular leads -- became legendary. While the group's stripped-down, energetic sound paved the way for English punk rock in the late '70s, their back-to-basics style was overshadowed by the dominance of punk and new wave, and the group had retreated into cult status by the early '80s.

Brilleaux (vocals, harmonica), Johnson (guitar), and John B. Sparks (bass) had all played in several blues-based bar bands around Canvey Island, England before forming Dr. Feelgood in 1971. Taking their name from a Johnny Kidd & the Pirates song, the group was dedicated to playing old-fashioned R&B and rock & roll, including both covers and originals by Johnson. John Martin (drums), a former member of Finian's Rainbow, was added to the lineup, and the group began playing the pub rock circuit. By the end of 1973, Dr. Feelgood's dynamic live act had made them the most popular group on the pub rock circuit, and several labels were interested in signing them. They settled for United Artists and released their debut, Down by the Jetty, in 1974.

According to legend, Down by the Jetty was recorded in mono and consisted almost entirely of first takes. While it was in fact recorded in stereo, the rumor added significantly to Dr. Feelgood's purist image, and the album became a cult hit. The following year, the group released Malpractice -- also their first U.S. offering -- which climbed into the U.K. Top 20 on the strength of the band's live performances and positive reviews. In 1976, the group released the live album Stupidity, which became a smash hit in Britain, topping the album charts. Despite its thriving British success, Dr. Feelgood was unable to find an audience in the States. One other American album, Sneakin' Suspicion, followed in 1977 before the band gave up on the U.S.

Sneakin' Suspicion didn't replicate the success of Stupidity, partially because of its slick production, but mainly because the flourishing punk rock movement overshadowed Dr. Feelgood's edgy roots rock. Wilko Johnson left the band at the end of 1977 to form the Solid Senders; he later joined Ian Dury's Blockheads. Henry McCullough played on Feelgood's 1977 tour before John "Gypie" Mayo became the group's full-time lead guitarist. Nick Lowe produced 1978's Be Seeing You, Mayo's full-length debut with Dr. Feelgood. The album generated the 1979 Top Ten hit "Milk and Alcohol," as well as the Top 40 hit "As Long as the Price Is Right." Two albums, As It Happens and Let It Roll, followed in 1979, and Mayo left the band in 1980. He was replaced by Johnny Guitar in 1980, who debuted on A Case of the Shakes, which was produced by Nick Lowe.

During their first decade together, Dr. Feelgood never left the road, which was part of the reason founding members John Martin and John Sparks left the band in 1982. Lee Brilleaux replaced them with Buzz Barwell and Pat McMullen, and continued touring. Throughout the '80s, Brilleaux continued to lead various incarnations of Dr. Feelgood, settling on the rhythm section of bassist Phil Mitchell and drummer Kevin Morris in the mid-'80s. The band occasionally made records -- including Brilleaux, one of the last albums on Stiff Records, in 1976 -- but concentrated primarily on live performances. Dr. Feelgood continued to perform to large audiences into the early '90s, when Brilleaux was struck by cancer. He died in April of 1994, three months after he recorded the band's final album, Down at the Doctor's. The remaining members of Dr. Feelgood hired vocalist Pete Gage and continued to tour under the band's name. Former Feelgoods Gypie Mayo, John Sparks, and John Martin formed the Practice in the mid-'80s, and they occasionally performed under the name Dr. Feelgood's Practice. Wilko Johnson was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2013 and was expected to live no more than a year, but he responded well to surgery and returned to music in 2014, continuing to perform and record up until his death on November 21, 2022 at the age of 75. ~Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Wallenstein was described in reviews as the “father of the Hamburg blues scene” and “living legend of the blues”. Characteristic of his playing is his picking style, which is in the tradition of Piedmont Blues or Texas Country Blues, for example Mance Lipscomb. The Delta Blues slide guitar is also part of his repertoire. His guitars, tuned in open tuning , have eight strings inspired by Big Joe Williams , which, together with his authentic blues voice, creates his special sound. Abi Wallenstein at a Blues & Boogie session with Jessy Martens and Henry Heggen in 2016 Wallenstein has been on stage as a blues interpreter since 1966 and has played in a number of bands since then. He performed with musicians such as Joja Wendt , Vince Weber , Inga Rumpf , Axel Zwingenberger and Tom Shaka . He has appeared at numerous blues and boogie festivals, such as the Ascona Jazz Festival and Monopoly (Italy), the Lahnsteiner Blues Festival as well as festivals in Aurillac, Chedigny and St. Aignan (France), Vienna and Wels (Austria), in Olsztyn and Toruń (Poland). He performed as support for musicians such as Joe Cocker , Christy Moore , Fats Domino , Robben Ford, Eric Burdon and Johnny Winter . Wallenstein still plays actively in constantly changing formations, including in the band “Blues Culture” with Steve Baker (harmonica, background vocals) and Martin Röttger (cajon, percussion). Also with “Prof. Washboard” (washboard, drums and percussion) as well as the Kiel blues musicians Georg Schroeter (piano) and Marc Breitfelder (harmonica) and in various duo concerts, for example with the saxophonist Kurt Buschmann . As part of his social commitment, in 2001 he gave a concert for homeless people at a Christmas party in the Pik As overnight shelter in Hamburg and forewent the fee.

Maybe no one personifies Motor City music better than the man who named his band the Detroit Wheels. Mitch Ryder launched his career during the glory days of ‘60s rock n’ roll where he made his name with a mix of potent live performances and hit singles. And like Neil Young said, it’s better to burn out than fade away, and that’s exactly what happened to the original band as their wild two-year rocket ride from 1965 to 1967 brought them fame, but sadly no fortune, while tearing the band apart in the process. But as the cliché goes, sometimes what doesn’t kill a man just makes him stronger.

Through decades and musical trends that came and went, one thing remained consistent with Ryder, the energy he brought to the stage. And that’s been enough to keep fans coming to shows throughout the now 60+ years since he first took to the stage in 1963 as the leader of Billy Lee & the Rivieras. During a career peppered with wild moments like being the last person to perform with Otis Redding to having John Mellencamp produce his cover of a Prince song, Ryder has experienced just about it all and thankfully for us, he lived to tell about it.
Which brings us to The Roof Is On Fire about which Ryder recently expained, “This double CD was a part of my 75th birthday while on tour in Germany. Normally I would take exception in involving my age into any aspect of my life. You see, when it comes to music, age is totally irrelevant. So whether you are making music with beginners or seasoned veterans, such as I have on this compilation, the focus point is not about age but about fun and music combined. I am very familiar with most of the players on this work. Over the years, since we had our first rehearsal in a communist-run youth center in East Berlin, our integrity, power, self-respect, and accomplishment have grown unilaterally. For those fans who have been with us from the beginning, they will readily note that the music created with this group of musicians gives my early debut in West Germany a real run for its money. So sit back, listen, and enjoy an evolutionary process that I wish would go on forever.”

Originally from Kansas City, MO, Danielle was initially influenced by her parents and remembers watching her father play blues guitar and her mother sing with the group Little Eva & The Works. She formed Trampled Under Foot, a popular Midwestern band, with her two brothers. Her solo career began with the release of Wolf Den (2015), which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Blues charts and amassed 7.5 million Spotify streams. Cry No More (2018) debuted at #1 on the Billboard Blues Charts and was nominated for a Grammy. It also had Spotify streams of over 10 million.

Nicole has been inducted into the Kansas Music Hall of Fame and the South Canada Blues Hall of Fame. She has also received seven Blues Music Awards. She recently duetted with Dion on the upcoming song 'I Aim To Please' and recorded the opening track in the upcoming Peter Hutchings film 'Which Brings Me To You'.

The upcoming album is full of love, loss, will, determination and all the other things that come with love. The first single, 'Make Love', is about consciously moving past the pain, choosing love, family and community in the difficult moments of life. It elevates the message of love and togetherness despite hardship.”

Washington may have been a journeyman at what he did, but he was at the very top of the journeyman class, and what he did - play a hybrid of blues and soul - is not as overmined a genre as many blues styles are. That means that if you like blues-soul crossover, you will almost certainly like this compilation of late-'60s and early-'70s sides, which represent the peak of Washington as a recording artist. Most of these were done for Fraternity from 1967-1970, and show him comfortable in deep gospel-like Southern soul grooves ("Doggin' Me Around"), quasi-Sam Cooke pop-soul ("A Woman Is a Funny Thing"), and party-tempo blues-soul hybrids that sometimes show a B.B. King influence.

The material is more soul than blues; the blues bite is usually supplied by the sharp guitar licks (sometimes played by the great Lonnie Mack), the soul embellished by Washington's cheery, uplifting vocals. The exact tracks featuring Mack are not precisely identified, but his burning, slightly distorted tone is certainly on "Turn on the Bright Lights." Three of the 25 tracks were previously unissued, and in addition to the Fraternity material there are a couple of subsequent singles on Jewel from 1971 and 1973. /Richie Unterberger, AllMusic

Hanks Company Band - Herb Deluxe

8. No Good Boogie Man (3:25)
9. Done Tryin' (2:44)
10. Ain't That The Way (3:33)
11. All Good For Ass (2:36)

On the strength of its rhythmic swampy blues and rasping vocals laden with soul this must be a record made in Louisiana sometime in the early 1970s. If the name Hanks Company Band does not immediately spring to mind surely they are neighbours of JJ Cale, Junior Kimborough or Tony Joe White? Ten tracks later that impression is unshakeable so it comes as a bit of surprise to learn that this album was made in the wetlands of North Wales where Hank resides.

Hanks Company Band’s sultry groove swirls like plumes of thick smoke. And therein lies a clue to the album’s genesis. To quote the man himself, “I just wrote some songs and got all fuzzed up with my new electrified guitar and some of the finest herb deluxe”. Really that is all you need to know. The rest is cosmic boogie played at varying intensities. But before taking the first puff, a bit of context might help. Hank is Paul Davies who under the same Hanks Company Band released a couple of fine americana/country-leaning albums over the past two years, ‘Hello High’ and ‘Big On Easy’. The band are Mother Moon who, again referring to the PR notes, is credited with vocals, percussion, accordion and magic, Tom The Cosmic Cowboy plays bass, analogue synthesizer and percussion. Finally there is Big Jim, also a percussionist but with the weighty responsibility for “smokes”.

The opening track ‘Kissing The Feet Of The High Princess’ plunges the listener deep into the swamp. Straight away its mesmeric groove evokes Tony Joe White as as repetitive growl of, “Mama you got me gone” suggests Hank’s has reached his preferred state. ‘Rain Shine’ continues in much the same vein although becoming drawn into Hank’s mystical vibe the senses become more attuned to the musical activity going on in the background. The Cosmic Cowboy’s synth buzzing in and out of the consciousness is a feature of the whole album but is particularly effective here. These two opening tracks feel like the core of the band from which they either turn up the fuzzbox into a complete maelstrom of sound or strip back to a more tranquil sound. ‘Good To Go’ is relentless boogie that is less swamp and more metal. The central riff almost overpowers everything else apart from a wailing harmonica. ‘Done Tryin’’ and closing track ‘All Good For Ass’ are further examples of Hank and Co blowing the doors off their hinges. If these were Hank’s only offering this reviewer may have struggled to complete the course.

Where Hanks Company Band truly excel is in their more relaxed mode. ‘Manifesting Prayer’ turns very JJ Cale as Hank peels away the layers of sound and shows he can sing as well as growl. Harmonising with Mother Moon to a gentle acoustic guitar strum ‘Take Your Time’ celebrates the pure joy of companionship, “there ain’t no mountain with you we can’t climb”. Similarly ‘Your Magic Work Me’ and ‘No Good Boogie Man’ float gently along, their beat is no less secure, just that the acoustic trance does it for this reviewer more than their louder counterparts. But whether gentle acoustic or fuzzbox bludgeoning there can be no refuting the authenticity of Hanks Company Band, worthy successors to those aforementioned giants of blues and swamp. /Lyndon Bolton, Americana UK

Lyrically driven acoustic and electric blues, Abita Blues pays tribute to southern bars, ditches, and bathroom walls. Their debut album, Louisiana Crude is a dirty blues portrait of down and out characters, late night odysseys, and Louisiana Crude, in every sense of the word. These songs are infused with elements from north and south of Lake Pontchartrain. "There are not a lot of artists speaking to the beauty of growing up on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain. We grew up here in the 70's. It was an adventure." Indeed, the local landscape takes center stage in songs like The Heron Song, Bayou Born, and All Kinds of Crazy - dirty blues tributes to the shallow creeks of Old Mandeville. "We practically lived in the creeks running off the lake. How could it not come out in our music at some point

Aayushi Karnik grew up in perhaps the most untraditional place for an aspiring blues guitarist: Surat, India. Yet despite that, the 26 year-old Karnik sounds like a young Stevie Ray Vaughn or Buddy Guy. On her debut album Troublemaker, the follow up to her debut EP The Summer Children, Karnik showcases her generational talent alongside two New York City veterans, Todd Turkishir (drums) and Gregory Jones (bass). Karnik originally hails from a town called Surat in Gujarat, Western India. As she describes, “It is a dry state, so there are no night clubs to perform. I was mostly a bedroom shredder imagining that I'm playing on a stage.” Despite the limited exposure to Western music, Karnik started out playing a lot of acoustic guitar, singing, and songwriting, but her musical trajectory began to change when she attended blues festivals in Mumbai, which included acts like Buddy Guy, Derek Trucks, Eric Gales, and homegrown Indian blues artists. “My father drove me to Mumbai so that I could attend this festival when I was sixteen, and after hearing just one set of Robert Randolph playing, I knew that his is what I had to do.” Shortly after, Karnik started a classic rock band with friends in Surat. “What made me serious about the blues/rock stuff was Led Zeppelin and John Mayer. We used to drive around the town listening to all the great music by Led Zeppelin, John Mayer, Stevie Ray Vaughn, AC/DC, Steppenwolf, and the list goes on. Though listening to Stevie Ray was the light flip moment.” Eventually, Karnik left Surat and moved to New York City to attend Julliard, where she continued to develop as both a guitarist and songwriter. In April of 2021, she released her debut EP The Summer Children, of which Rolling Stone India said, “In addition to agile and intricate guitar work, the singer in Karnik leaps out expressively and unfiltered.” Troublemaker features seven new songs by Karnik, as well as classic songs such as Willie Dixon’s “Spoonful”, B.B. King’s “Every Day I Have the Blues,” and Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil, Jerry Leiber, and Mike Stoller’s “On Broadway.” The album showcases Karnik’s versatile and complex jazz harmony and vocabulary and places it into a blues and rock context. The next great blues guitarist is here, and her name is Aayushi Karnik.
