Geoffrey Arnold Beck (born 24 June 1944) is an English rock guitarist. He is one of the three noted guitarists to have played with the Yardbirds (the other two being Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page). Beck also formed the Jeff Beck Group and with Tim Bogert and Carmine Appice, he formed Beck, Bogert & Appice.

Much of Beck's recorded output has been instrumental, with a focus on innovative sound, and his releases have spanned genres ranging from blues rock, hard rock, and an additional blend of guitar-rock and electronica. Although he recorded two hit albums (in 1975 and 1976) as a solo act, Beck has not established or maintained the sustained commercial success of many of his contemporaries and bandmates. Beck appears on albums by Rod Stewart, Mick Jagger, Tina Turner, Morrissey, Donovan, Diana Ross, Jon Bon Jovi, Malcolm McLaren, Kate Bush, Roger Waters, Stevie Wonder, Les Paul, Zucchero, Cyndi Lauper, Brian May, Roger Taylor, Stanley Clarke, Screaming Lord Sutch, ZZ Top, and Toots and the Maytals.

He was ranked fifth in Rolling Stone's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" and the magazine, upon whose cover Beck has appeared three times, has described him as "one of the most influential lead guitarists in rock". He is often called a "guitarist's guitarist". Beck has earned wide critical praise and received the Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance six times and Best Pop Instrumental Performance once. In 2014 he received the British Academy's Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music. Beck has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice: as a member of The Yardbirds (1992) and as a solo artist (2009).

Crazy Legs is Jeff Beck's tribute to the player who inspired him to pick up the guitar, Cliff Gallup of Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps. The fact that this collection of rockabilly tunes is also one of the liveliest albums of Beck's long career also underscores the fact that the brilliant guitarist is one of rock's greatest underachievers. Apparently unable to sustain working relationships with players as strong as those in his early groups, Beck has become a top-dollar guitarist for hire who has traded sustained musicality for isolated moments of virtuosity. But slumming with the Big Town Playboys, a respected British revival group, Beck is not just flashy window dressing but the lightning rod in a red-hot combo.

Beck has said that his biggest challenge in mastering rockabilly, a style that calls for the guitarist to mix single-note runs with snappy clusters of chords, was learning to play without the volume and distortion that has informed his playing since his mid-'60s tenure with the Yardbirds. That's what gives Crazy Legs its swing, for instead of dominating the music with sheer sonic muscle, Beck achieves the same end by bouncing his encyclopedic bag of riffs off a rippling rhythm section of drums and stand-up bass. Throughout these 18 well-chosen selections, Beck is equally apt to whip out a propulsive rhythm ("Lotta Lovin'"), a string of arpeggios ("Blues Stay Away From Me") or a wildly scrambled solo ("Cruisin'"). If guitarists earned degrees, Crazy Legs would be Beck's thesis toward a doctorate in rockabilly.

Crazy Legs is unlikely to be more than just another odd patch in Beck's crazy-quilt career. Rockabilly, after all, has been a retro novelty ever since the early Beatles covered tunes by Carl Perkins. The Playboys are certainly less self-conscious than the Stray Cats, who enjoyed 15 minutes of fame in the 1980s, though you can bet your ducktail that the Playboys wouldn't be on a major label without Beck on guitar. In that regard, Crazy Legs is oddly akin to Eric Clapton's Unplugged, for in both cases, celebrated guitar gods respectfully re-create the music that had first stirred their passions. Beck doesn't add anything new to the rockabilly vocabulary, but he plays this music as well as it's ever been played. So while Crazy Legs is ultimately redundant, it also rocks like crazy. /John Milward, Rolling Stone

13. Way Down (I Won’t Cry No More) (Feat. Stevie Van Zandt) (2:58)
14. Hymn To Him (Feat. Patti Scialfa & Bruce Springsteen) (4:30)

As one of the very few first-generation rock ‘n’ rollers still seriously pursing new avenues of expression, Dion’s Bronx soul is very much in evidence on this new album, a full-tilt blues offering. The blues songs therein are not “covers” nor Dion’s versions of blues standards. These compositions are in fact original blues masterpieces which are destined to become classics. He came up with the music and words for twelve of them and finished those with co-writer Mike Aquilina. The two exceptions are “Hymn To Him” which Dion wrote with Bill Tuohy and “Kickin’ Child,” written with Buddy Lucas.

To tell those stories, Dion recruited help from a few notable friends and admirers. He thought, “I needed to round up the best guitarists and musicians alive and pick them from every generation, every variation of blues.” And that’s just what he did, surrounding himself with those who feel the blues spirit as he does.

The album’s guests include the cream of the contemporary scene’s blues-rooted slingers including Jeff Beck, Billy Gibbons, Joe Bonamassa, Brian Setzer, Sonny Landreth, Samantha Fish, John Hammond Jr., Joe Louis Walker, Rory Block , Jimmy and Jerry Vivino, vintage guitar guru Joe Menza as well as icons Stevie Van Zandt, Patti Scialfa, Bruce Springsteen, Van Morrison and Paul Simon. Yes, that’s a whole lot of star power but each participated not because of his or her marquee appeal but because of what each could add musically. The result is one reflective of nuanced devotion to the blues rather than a gratuitous display of individual virtuosity. It’s very much Dion’s album and those bold face names participating are most convincingly there for him.

Classic Radio Broadcasts from San Francisco and London. Jeff Beck staggered out of The Yardbirds in early 1966 without a clear idea of where he was going next. Having walked out of the band after years of gruelling tour schedules with little in the way of either fame or fortune, he was initially launched as a solo artist by manager Simon Napier-Bell and producer Mickie Most. Although a chart hit, his debut single, Hi Ho Silver Lining, captured little of his instrumental talents or raw energy, and instead it was its B-Side, Beck s Bolero, which pointed to a possible future. Assisted by the cream of his contemporaries on the British music scene Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, Nicky Hopkins and Keith Moon the track suggested Beck would still work better as part of an ensemble. In the early months of 67 he formed The Jeff Beck Group, and over the course of the year the band concentrated on building up their public profile, both domestically and internationally. In Britain, they were frequent guests on BBC radio, both on the long running Saturday Club and on John Peel s brand new show, Top Gear . Meanwhile, future Led Zeppelin manager Peter Grant had spotted the huge potential of the burgeoning live music scene across the Atlantic, and he convinced the band to undertake a US tour in the Spring of 1968. The tour proved to be a massive success, with gushing reviews following the Beck Group across the country from their opening show in New York to their closing night at the Fillmore West in San Francisco. By the time the curtain came down, Grant had secured them a new recording contract with Epic records, a few weeks later Jeff Beck s Group debut album, Truth, appeared. Twilight of the Idols showcases the key live performances from across this early chapter in The Jeff Beck Group s career. Presented here are the complete BBC sessions from 1967 and 68, including the initial appearances on The Saturday Club that featured the rotating cast of players, with Mickey Waller and Dave Ambrose on the first gig replaced by Ron Wood and Anysley Dubar by the time of the second. Following the collection of BBC broadcasts we bring you the legendary show at The Fillmore West on the 24th of July 1968 - last night of the Beck Group s first US tour and a seminal moment in Jeff Beck s career. Fans of one of rock s greatest guitarists will find Twilight of the Idols to be the essential chronology of his 60s hey-day.

I was actually a bit nervous to review Buddy Guy’s latest album. He’s 81-years-old and musicians, even great ones, eventually lose a step. Guy hasn’t lost a step, though. If anything, he’s somehow gotten better. The Blues is Alive and Well is a fantastic album, and Guys’ voice and guitar are in peak form.

How has Guy gotten better? My theory is his openness to new sounds and music. Guy inspired no shortage of musicians, from Jimi Hendrix to Stevie Ray Vaughan. But Guy has obviously spent some time listening to their work, too, and has folded it into his own music. That integration of new ideas has kept his playing from stagnating. One of the album’s more interesting tracks is “Cognac,” which he performs with Keith Richards and Jeff Beck, two legendary guitarists and both less than a decade his junior. One might expect Guy to have the more old-fashioned sound, but surprisingly it’s Richards who sounds throwback (in a good way), Guy who sounds contemporary, and Beck who, as always, sounds like he’s from the future.

The title track is pure Buddy Guy, with lots of short, jabbing licks almost hiding within the song. Guy’s solos aren’t composed so much as they’re emoted. You can’t necessarily hum them, but you’ll always feel them. He’s backed on the track by the Muscle Shoals Horns, but rather than becoming an uptown blues a la BB King, Guy keeps everything bluesy and true to his own sound. The horns are just a tool to make a great song even better. The Muscle Shoals Horns make a few appearances on the album, and provide a lift to the songs without making any of them sound like a New Orleans funeral. But the guitar is the true star of the album. So much so, that Guy’s guitars are identified in the song credits.

Guy explores some funk and some fuzzy tones, but he’s at his best when he’s delivering pure blues. For example, “Nine Below Zero,” a Sonny Boy Williamson cover, is just a perfect track. Guy’s guitar and voice are in-your-face, the drums just barely providing a beat. If not for the production, which perfectly conveys the instruments, the track could have been recorded years ago, perhaps a lost track from his (and Junior Wells’) classic Play the Blues. One of the album’s nicer moments is “Milking Muther for Ya,” which is just Guy singing along with his electric guitar and no band. The track seems like a live moment caught on tape, but seeing what Guy can do with just his voice and guitar brings home how much talent and energy he still has.

On The Blues is Alive and Well Guy shows he’s still an engaged, passionate artist. Guy uses the same band across the album, including drummer/producer Tom Hambridge, who also wrote or co-wrote most of the album’s songs. There’s a chemistry to all of the tracks because of the consistency of the line-up. But there’s also Guy and his indefatigable talent. He brings it on each and every track. Any blues fan will truly love this album. ~by Steven Ovadia

The Yardbirds - The Clapton And Beck Years (2 CD)

As befits its title, this double album of classic Yardbirds material covers the Clapton and and Beck years on the respective discs. Those well-known names are accompanied by ever-presents Chris Dreja (rhythm guitar/bass) and Jim McCarty, who served from the band's 1963 beginnings to the split five years later. The other original Yardbird, vocalist Keith Relf, was electrocuted in 1976, while original bassist Paul Samwell-Smith became a record producer - Beverly Craven and Cat Stevens just two of his successes.

Eric Clapton replaced the band's first - and only unknown - guitarist, Top Topham, just in time to feature on their debut LP "Five Live Yardbirds", cut at London's Marquee Club in 1964. Compromising ten US blues numbers from the likes of Chuck Berry, Howlin' Wolf and Bo Diddley given a high-energy treatment, it's been acclaimed as one of the all-time classic concert albums and is present here in its entirety as tracks 7 to 16 of CD one.

In 1965, Clapton quit for the purist blues of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, and Jeff Beck from the little-known London band Tridents arrived as his replacement. The hit singles he appeared on like "Heart Full Of Soul", the Eastern tinged "Still I'm Sad" and "Shapes Of Things" were classics of their kind and remain ageless staples of rock radio to this day. These three titles and their respective B-sides lead of our second disc, and are accompanied by such further collectable Yardbirds tracks as "The Train Kept A Rollin" from the cult movie Blow Up that also features Jimmy Page (the film showed him on bass, though he actually played guitar). /Excerpt from the liner notes by Michael Heatley

As fashionable as concert sit-ins have come to be in recent years, such guesting can be the bane of the live performance. So often it is the case that such invitees can interrupts the flow and/or momentum rather than nurturing it. However, Jeff Beck's August 2016 celebration in Los Angeles of his fiftieth anniversary is the exception to that rule: the stream of diverse personnel is of a piece with the stylistic history the event represents.

Live at the Hollywood Bowl is quite likely everything the attendee would want to hear at one of the British guitarist's shows. Likewise, the guests that populate the roster and share the stage with the icon of the instrument are all those a fan would hope for, but not expect to see in a single setting. ~Doug Collette

Jeff Beck paid fitting tribute to Les Paul last summer, celebrating what would have been the pioneering guitarist's 95th birthday by playing his friend and mentor's music, along with classic tunes from the era, in the same Times Square nightclub that Les Paul played every Monday for 14 years, before his death in August 2009.

Sponsored by Gibson Guitar and billed as 'A Celebration of Les Paul,' Jeff Beck was joined by The Imelda May Band at the Iridium Jazz Club on June 9th, 2010. The two-time Rock And Roll Hall of Fame inductee mesmerized the star-studded audience with a tour de force performance of classics that Paul recorded with Mary Ford, 'How High The Moon,' 'Vaya Con Dios' and 'Mockin' Bird Hill,' along with such rock and roll standards as 'Twenty Flight Rock' and 'Walking In The Sand.'

Following this release, Beck will take the 'Rock And Roll Party' on the road for a short U.S. tour. Beck will once again be backed by The Imelda May Band and its enchanting singer, Imelda May, who joined Beck on stage at the 2010 Grammy® Awards for a spot-on rendition of Paul's 'How High The Moon.'

PBS will give fans a first look at a unique edition of this performance with the premiere of 'Jeff Beck Honors Les Paul,' a concert special that captures the first night of 'The Celebration to Honor Les Paul,' which was recorded on June 9, 2010, what would have been Les Paul's 95th birthday. Special guest performers included Troy 'Trombone Shorty' Andrews, Gary U.S. Bonds and Brian Setzer, who traded riffs with Beck on Eddie Cochran's rockabilly classic 'Twenty Flight Rock.'

Beck offered a stellar performance of a couple of tunes from his own catalog as well as covers of standards from the pop, soul, classical, and jazz canons including, "People Get Ready," "Over the Rainbow," "A Day in the Life," and "How High the Moon." (The latter was done as a special tribute to Les Paul, and the only track on which Beck played Paul's signature guitar rather than his traditional white Fender Stratocaster.) ~Thom Kurek

Jeff Beck earned raves last year for his spellbinding performances during the hugely successful double-bill tour with ZZ TOP. Fans can relive Beck’s thrilling guitar gymnastics from those shows with a new live album that touches on key eras from the legendary artist’s influential career. The album captures a snapshot of Jeff’s work in 2014, with two newly recorded studio tracks also included, his first new music since 2010’s Grammy®-winning Emotion & Commotion.

Packed with more than an hour of music, JEFF BECK LIVE+ will be available from Atco Records, an imprint of Rhino Entertainment, on May 5 and will also be available digitally. The album will arrive as Beck is in the midst of an East Coast solo tour, which includes newly added dates in May. This trek also features make-up dates from the same ZZ TOP tour this album was recorded during, before it was cut short due to an injury to ZZ TOP bassist Dusty Hill.

The 14 live performances on JEFF BECK LIVE+ were recorded at multiple venues in 2014 and feature Beck backed by his band: vocalist Jimmy Hall, bassist Rhonda Smith, drummer Jonathan Joseph and guitarist Nicolas Meier. The quintet explored Beck’s vast catalog—which stretches across five decades—with performances of “Morning Dew” (from Truth, 1968), “Superstition” (from Beck, Bogert, Appice, 1973), “Big Block” (from Jeff Beck’s Guitar Shop, 1989), as well as two Grammy-winning tracks: his cover of the Beatles’ “A Day In The Life” and “Hammerhead.”

LIVE + concludes with two new studio tracks: “Tribal” and “My Tiled White Floor,” with guest vocals from Ruth Lorenzo and Veronica Bellino, respectively. These aggressive new songs mark Beck’s first studio recordings since 2010 and show a stark departure from the sound on his previous album as the guitarist continues to push the envelope of musical innovation, just as he has his entire career. These tracks are sure to whet the appetite of Beck fans as the guitarist prepares his 17th studio album, which is expected later this year.

Throughout his career, Beck has also proven to be a brilliant interpreter of other’s songs. This live album doesn’t disappoint with covers of “Danny Boy,” Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing,” Mahavishnu Orchestra’s “You Know You Know,” and Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come.”

Beck’s career took off in the mid-1960s, after replacing Eric Clapton as lead guitarist for The Yardbirds on the recommendation of his friend Jimmy Page. He played on several of the rock group’s hits, such as “Heart Full of Soul,” “Shapes of Things” and “Over Under Sideways Down.” Beck has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice: once with The Yardbirds in 1992 and again as a solo artist in 2009. He has won numerous Grammy Awards, including two in 2011.
