Betts'who, with Duane Allman, designed an enduring style of rock guitar harmony in the original Allman Brothers Band. In this set recorded at various points between 2005 & 2008 in which he offered Allman Brothers hits as well as songs from his solo records, shows how important a guitarist Betts is, and how he still can connect with an audience. Throughout his guitar playing is the main attraction: ringing and biting, yet always melodic, soulful and heartfelt.

A soulful blues singer in the mold of Bobby "Blue" Bland or Z.Z. Hill, Floyd Miles is probably best known for his tenure with the Allman Brothers during the group's early years and for his later work with Clarence Carter. Crazy Man marks Miles' solo recording debut, cut with friends like Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts, Edgar Winter and Root Boy Slim. The title Crazy Man to the contrary, Miles is more adept on the record's more mellow, laidback numbers; the harder blues tunes leave him behind. ~Jason Ankeny

Growing up in Cincinnati in a musical family allowed Pedro many opportunities to experiment with a number of different instruments. At 18 years old, Pedro was doing session work and production in styles as diverse as jazz, funk, reggae and hip-hop.
In 1996, the 20 year old multi-instrumentalist received a performance scholarship to the acclaimed Berklee College of Music. Between the years of 1997 & 2001, Pedro completed his musical studies in Boston, MA, while performing with two popular West African band leaders, Djeli Balla Tounkara and master drummer Sidi “Joh” Camara.
With these well renowned musicians, Pedro played throughout New England and traveled to Mali, West Africa, to perform and study Mande and Bambara music. Upon his return to the states, Pedro ventured south to Florida to join the gypsy fusion group, The Lotus Fire. The summer of 2001 found Pedro touring Europe to support the release of the group’s album, “Dance of the Wicked”.
Pedro’s next endeavor, The Vine Street Rumba Band, brought him together with internationally credited drummer, Paul Cartwright, and the great band leader, Keith Greene, who for three decades was conductor, arranger, and lead trumpeter of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus. In 2003, Pedro produced the group’s only album, “Rumba Florida”.
Amidst a steady schedule of performing and recording in Florida, Pedro spent time honing his craft and working with many instruments including a variety of National Reso-Phonic guitars, Contrabass, the Puerto Rican Cuatro, and of course, electric bass and slide guitars. Pedro incorporates many of these instruments in such musical styles as Folk, Ragtime, Jazz, Delta Blues, Country, Rock 'n' Roll as well as the Latin and Caribbean influences that come together to make what Pedro refers to as "Siesta Creole".
During this time Pedro caught the ear of Rock N Roll Hall of Fame member and Grammy winning veteran, Dickey Betts, founding member of the The Allman Brothers Band. Betts soon asked Pedro to play bass for his band, Great Southern. Pedro has filmed a DVD entitled “Back Where It All Begins” with Betts and Great Southern, at The Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, appeared on The Carson Daily Show, released a few live CD's and DVD's as well as touring internationally with Dickey Betts & Great Southern and Devon Allman's Honeytribe (on slide guitar), following the 2007 release of Devon's "Torch" LP featuring Arevalo on several songs.
While home on breaks Pedro recorded his (2006) solo album entitled, “Pedro Arevalo & Friends.” The follow up (2009) "& Friends Too" is currently underway for an early March release. These albums features guest appearances by Dickey Betts & Great Southern, T.C. Carr, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's own Jimmy Fadden, Jack Kirkner, Thorson Moore, Berry Oakley, Jr. and many others. The albums are an interesting mix of Blues, Country, and Rock n Roll. With plans to tour in support of the new records, Pedro continues to write, perform, and produce his "Psycho-Tropic" music...

Dickey Betts & Great Southern - Atlanta's Burning Down

Bitrate: MP3@320K/s

Year: 1978/2005

[3:51] 7. You Can Have Her (I Don't Want Her)
[4:12] 8. Mr. Blues Man

On his third solo outing -- and his second with his backing band Great Southern -- Allman Brothers lead guitarist Dickey Betts moves back into the deep-fried Southern boogie that the Brothers are (in)famous for and serves it up with just a smidgen of country and comes out with another winner. Once again the mood is laid back and greasy with the guitars taking center stage in a funky, spunky mix that concentrates as much on the backbeat as it does on the swinging Southern boogie blues. Hence Betts digs deep into New Orleans as a source of inspiration on tracks like "Good Time Feeling," "Dealin' With the Devil," and "Back on the Road Again." Again relying heavily on the harmonica stylings of Topper Price for color and nuance, Betts uses this cue as a way of bringing the entire band into the proceedings this time out. While it's true that his guitar is the centerpiece of the album, Great Southern is present more as a unit than as Betts' backing band. On the title track, a ballad that offers a ghostly narrative of the end of the Civil war, Betts also uses Bob Dylan's backing choir of Bonnie Bramlet, Clydie King, and Shirley Mathews for added emotional impact as well as a string section. While the string section could have been dispensed with, it doesn't hurt too much as the integrity of the song is so focused and sharp it's a minor nuisance. Production on this set is a bit muddier than on the Great Southern album that preceded it, and this is a good thing. There is more immediacy in the band's presence on the record than the studio's. Given that this was issued in 1978, when the bottom was about to drop out of rock & roll in favor of things like new wave and rap, this album holds up surprisingly well over two decades later. The shuffle and roll that was then Betts' trademark is refreshingly untouched by the production or musical excesses of the time. There is no attempt to be "relevant" or "cutting edge." But there is no retro feel on this disc either; it sounds consistent with a man's vision who's always considered himself right on time and still does. Loud, tough, and funky, Atlanta's Burning Down is a winner. ~Thom Jurek

The 2DVD set and companion piece to the 2CD Rockpalast-30 Years of Southern Rock 1978-2008 from Dickie Betts & Great Southern. Major props here, as you get the full shows on both the 1978 & the 2008 German sets, with Dickie and the band in fine form on each one. Fans of the early Allman Brothers Band will love the twin guitar mastery of Betts and cohort 'Dangerous' Dan Toler, who evokes images of a young Duane Allman on a great rendition of "In Memory of Elisabeth Reed", and other Allman's cuts such as "Jessica", "Ramblin' Man", and a monumental, 30-minute version of the underrated instrumental fusion classic "High Falls", which includes some fiery guitar solos from Dickie. Throw in stellar renditions of Great Southern songs "Run Gypsy Run", "Back on the Road", "Good Time Feelin' ", and more, and you have a rippin' set from a Southern Rock band that seemingly never got their due. Give credit out to the whole group, especially keyboard player Michael Workman, who layers in plenty of smoky organ tones throughout.

Over on the 2008 show, Dickie's looking a bit weathered (as of this writing, he's getting set to retire from live performances), but he has a three guitar army in this latest version of Great Southern, including his son Duane and slide master Andy Aledort, along with two drummers, a bassist, and keyboard player. Son Duane (no doubt named after the late Duane Allman) is the spitting image of Dickie circa 1971, and shows his formidable guitar skills on "Get Away" and "Having a Good Time", while Dickie and Andy do the dueling slide & lead guitar lines on "Statesboro Blues" and "One Way Out". Of course, the set wouldn't be complete without stirring renditions of "Blue Sky", "Ramblin' Man", "Jessica", and "In Memory of Elisabeth Reed", all featuring sizzling guitar solos and interplay, but the surprise is the hard rockin' 90's Allman Brothers gem "No One to Run With", as the band is locked in and giving their best. Keyboard player Michael Kach handles all the Greg Allman vocals in this set, and does a fine job, while Dickie tackles his original pieces and the Great Southern tunes. His voice is pretty weathered at this point, and he certainly looks a tad frail, but for a guy nearing 70, he can still rip on his Gibson Les Paul. The audio & video on this portion is stellar, as compared to the slight grainy quality of the 1978 part of the DVD.

Kudos to the SPV & Rockpalast folks for putting out this enjoyable double disc set. Southern Rock with loads of guitar virtuosity doesn't get much better than this.
