A blues rocker with an emphasis on high energy and volume, Fred James understands the sonic possibilities of Fender Strats....Even purists will find this album stokin' their fire.

By the early 1970s Fred Jr. had moved to Nashville, TN to get into the Music business. He worked on the road and in the studio with some of Nashville's finest before launching the Cascade Records imprint in the late 1970s and releasing his own "Music Man" LP and some very rare and collectable 45s by a variety of Roots Music artists. The label also functioned as a "custom" label, releasing records for hire. By the 1980s, Fred Jr. was getting into record production in earnest. His father turned over his IFJM masters to his son in hopes that they could get them reissued and re-licensed. The remainder of the Johnny Harris recordings were promptly licensed to Cadence Jazz and Fred Sr.'s own solo album was released. Fred Jr. also recorded The International Submarine Band, Orion and The Memphis Horns/Markeys. He worked as guitarist with these bands in the mid 1980s. The catalog also has some of the earliest recordings by Mary-Ann Brandon, Mello Mel Owens and Bleu Jackson. All went on to bigger things in the 1990s. Fred soon formed Bluesland Productions and went on to become a force in the independent record world.

Sam Lay has Blues royalty, no doubt about it. He was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1935 and by 1957 was playing with the original Thunderbirds, until ‘59 when he went to Chicago to join Little Walter's Band. The following year he joined Howlin' Wolf's band and he quickly became an in-demand drummer for hire, working with the cream of the Chicago Blues artists, including John Lee Hooker, Bo Diddley, Junior Wells, Muddy Waters, Magic Sam, Jimmy Rogers, Earl Hooker, Eddie Taylor and Otis Rush.

In 1965 Sam backed Bob Dylan at the infamous Newport Folk Festival along with Mike Bloomfield and Al Cooper. Later that year Bloomfield joined the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and in 1966 Sam also joined the group. In 1969 he signed with Blue Thumb Records and recorded the "Sam Lay In Bluesland” LP, produced by Mike Bloomfield and Nick Gravenites. He has toured consistently through the decades and recorded this live album at the Boardwalk Cafe, Nashville, Tennessee in 1994.

[3:36] 14. Fred James - Herb Stuffing

Although the liner notes to this 14-track blues collection are otherwise thorough, one not so insignificant element is missing: the original release and recording dates of the material. The common thread seems to be that they were all produced by Fred James, who also plays guitar on all of the cuts, one of which, the instrumental "Herb Stuffing," is credited to James himself. Though James also wrote the notes, the time frame of the tracks (four of which were previously unissued) is maddeningly unspecific, though it can be deduced that they were all done sometime in the 20 years prior to this 2010 release. At any rate, these are pretty average, workmanlike contemporary electric blues, not many of them by big names in the field, with Earl Gaines, Frank Frost, Sam Lay, and Johnny Jones being the biggest. Sometimes performances of particular strength cut through to get noticed, especially Gaines' ballad "I Believe in Your Love," which has a rich and moving vibrato vocal. James is a decent and versatile guitarist, too, but in part owing to the substandard documentation, it's not a notable compilation of 20th into 21st century blues. ~Richie Unterberger

Notes: Sam Carr is as close to royalty as you can get in the Blues world. He was born in Friar's Point, Mississippi in 1926, the son of legendary Blues man Robert Nighthawk (aka Robert Lee McCoy). Sam Carr cut his teeth playing with his father, then Sonny Boy Williamson before forming the Jelly Roll Kings with Frank Frost. In 1960 they recorded the classic 'Boss Man' album for Sam Phillips, (of Sun Records fame). Their next record was produced by Elvis' guitarist Scotty Moore and yielded a hit with 'My Back Scratcher'. After Frank Frost's death in 1996, Sam put together a new band called The Delta Jukes and these live recordings are their earliest. Live archive release from the Blues legend, recorded at the Lucerne Blues Festival in Switzerland in 2000. This is modern Mississippi Delta Blues at its finest.
