More than 50 years after Joe Cocker led a troupe of musicians across the U.S. for his Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour, the Tedeschi Trucks Band is paying homage to those performances with a new release. The live album, titled Mad Dogs & Englishmen Revisited (Live At LOCKN’), was recorded nearly a decade ago on Sept. 11, 2015, at the LOCKN’ Music Festival in Arrington, Virginia.
In addition to bandleaders Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks, the performance featured original Mad Dogs touring musicians Rita Coolidge, Claudia Lennear and Chris Stainton, as well as several other special guests (including Doyle Bramhall II, the Black Crowes’ Chris Robinson, Traffic’s Dave Mason, North Mississippi Allstar’s Anders Osbourne, Warren Haynes, Pamela Polland, and John Bell). Also in the mix for the 2015 recording was Leon Russell, who orchestrated Cocker’s 1970 tour and passed away a little over a year after the Tedeschi Trucks Band-led tribute.
The live album crackles with energy and ease, feeling in every way like a party that LOCKN’ concert attendees were lucky to have experienced in person. Even 10 years after it was recorded, Mad Dogs & Englishmen Revisited (Live At LOCKN’) comes across as a special moment in time - one that, like the tour it’s celebrating, is not easily replicated. From album opener “The Letter” to the closing notes of “The Ballad of Mad Dogs and Englishmen,” the 14-track collection features songs that were either performed during or inspired by the Mad Dogs tour.
Tedeschi’s always powerful vocals take the lead on “The Letter,” the live album’s first single, initially recorded by the Box Tops in 1967, and carry through on “Darling Be Home Soon,” the song penned by the Lovin’ Spoonful’s John Sebastian that Cocker covered on 1969’s Joe Cocker! Later, Bramhall makes an appearance on “Dixie Lullaby” and joins Coolidge on “Bird on the Wire,” while Robinson sings the lead on “Sticks and Stones” and trades vocals with Tedeschi on “Space Captain.”
Halfway through the collection, the album spotlights Haynes as he delivers an electric vocal performance of the Beatles’ “She Came in Through the Bathroom Window” while supported by a stage packed with performers. Some of Cocker’s best-known covers are also in the mix. Mason and Osbourne take the lead on “Feelin’ Alright,” the Cocker hit originally penned by Mason in the mid-1960s. The Beatles’ “With a Little Help From My Friends” and The Band’s “The Weight” also get the full Mad Dogs tour treatment, with both songs turning into large group celebrations in clear nods to the way Cocker performed them.
