Ace Moreland is a southern rock bluesman and was one of King Snake records finest artists. As indicated in previous reviews of this artist, Moreland could play his Stratocaster with the best of them and his vocals had that certain smoky and gritty quality to them that made you certain you were listening to someone much older than Morelands early 40's. "Keepin' a Secret" is Moreland's fourth release and arguably his most diverse. As King Snake producer Bob Greenlee indicates in the liner notes, this CD runs the gamut from shuffles like "Bring Out the Boogie", featuring Noble "Thin Man" Watts on tenor sax, to funk such as "Don't Let the Devil Ride" or "Law of the Jungle". Moreove, in addition to some Moreland originals, Moreland covers Son House's "Death Letter Blues" as well as a couple of tunes written by Greenlee himself. While this certainly an interesting CD, to me Moreland was at his best writing his own material and simply sticking to the blues. Sadly, Moreland died this year, barely 50, and just starting to peak. He was a victim of lung cancer. Like many bluesmen that have passed before him, Moreland's music will be missed. ~Deepbluereview
