Edwin Joseph Bocage, known to music lovers around the world as 'Eddie Bo', was born in New Orleans, raised in Algiers and the 9th Ward. Having come from a family that is legendary in the traditional jazz community (cousins Henry, Charles, and Peter, had all made important contributions playing with the finest jazz orchestras prior to World War II), after graduating from Booker T. Washington High School and spending time abroad in the Army, he returned to New Orleans to study composition and arranging at the Grunewald School of Music. It was here that Eddie Bo developed a unique style of piano playing and arranging that incorporated complex be-bop voicings, influenced by Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson. His mother and Professor Longhair, whose playing styles were similar, were major influences on Bo as well.

In a career that spanned well over five decades, Eddie Bo made more 45's than any artist had in New Orleans other than Fats Domino. He produced records for Irma Thomas, Robert Parker, Art Neville, Chris Kenner, Al "Carnival Time" Johnson and the late Johnny Adams. Bo was a prolific songwriter, having penned several timeless songs: "Check Mr. Popeye", "It Must Be Love", "I'm Wise" (made famous by Little Richard under the name "Slippin' and Slidin'") and the hit recorded by Etta James, "My Dearest Darling". He also wrote Tommy Ridgley's "In The Same Old Way" and further demonstrated genius in the realm of contemporary New Orleans funk on the highly creative works "Hook and Sling" and "Pass the Hatchet."

During the 1950's Eddie Bo led a group of stellar New Orleans sidemen around the country backing such vocalists as Ruth Brown, Joe Turner, Lloyd Price, Smiley Lewis, Earl King, the Wild Magnolia Indians, Algiers brass Band, Treme Brass Band, the late Johnny Adams and the Platters. His versatility and professionalism had a vital impact on the world of contemporary New Orleans music. As a vocalist, he was one of a kind. As a pianist, he transcended categorizing. His spirit and vitality were an inspiration to musicians all over the world.

Bo had many of his early 45's reissued on compilations and contributed to the works of many other artists, including The Dirty Dozen Brass Band and George Porter, Jr.

Throughout his career, Eddie self-produced several CDs and toured Europe in a series of stadium concerts which drew record setting audiences.

Eddie Bo passed away on March 18, 2009.

Edwin Joseph Bocage known as Eddie Bo was born in New Orleans on September 20th 1930. A singer and pianist schooled in jazz, he was best known for his blues, soul and funk output as a performer, arranger, composer and record producer in the city. Eddie worked with over forty different record labels in his time and incredibly, released more singles than anyone else from New Orleans except Fats Domino.

He worked with Big Joe Turner, Earl King, Guitar Slim, Johnny Adams, Lloyd Price, Ruth Brown, Smiley Lewis, The Platters and more. It was while Chris Barber was playing with Dr John for a month in New Orleans during 1991 that a friend suggested that Chris should rent Marshall Sehorn and Allen Toussaint's "Sea-Saint" studio for a couple of days to cut Eddie Bo with some of New Orleans' finest on the session.

Eddie jumped at the opportunity and rounded up some top guns, starting with Bobby Bland's long-time guitar player Wayne Bennett. Born in 1931, Wayne had also played with an impressive bunch including, Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, Elmore James, Cannonball Adderley, Sonny Stitt, Dexter Gordon, Jackie Wilson, The Chi-Lites and many more.

Eddie had wanted electric bass and tuba over the two days and so in came Charles "Chuck" Moore and Walter Payton. An associate of the Neville Brothers and Allen Toussaint, Chuck had played electric bass on recordings with Guitar Slim Jnr., Rockin' Dopsie, Marva Wright, Sugar Pie DeSanto, Zigaboo Modeliste and others. Walter, a stalwart of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Young Tuxedo Brass Band had also participated in the many classic New Orleans recordings including Lee Dorsey's "Working In A Coal Mine", Aaron Neville's Tell It Like It Is" and Robert Parker's "Barefootin'". On the second day, Chuck got called to another session and but Walter stepped in and surprised everyone by playing bass guitar style on his string bass to great effect.

Then Eddie got the hottest drummer in town. Russell Batiste Jr., was just 26 years old on this session. He had joined the Funky Meters a couple of years earlier when they were reincarnated following the breakup of The Meters and was on fire over this two-day session.

New Orleans local "Alto Red" Morgan played Alto Sax and Chris Barber played Trombone. According to Chris they had no rehearsal and just made up their parts on the spot.

"The tapes remained in Chris' archive until 2015 when he sent me a CD listening copy. The instantly infectious, pre-Katrina New Orleans funk exploded out of my speakers, transporting me to Crescent City for the best part of an hour and rendering me oblivious to the phone and occasional tentative taps on my office door. Now it's your turn to step into the time machine." Malcolm Mills. Chairman. Proper Music Group Ltd. 2016

Eddie died in 2009, a sorely underappreciated veteran of the New Orleans R&B scene. Irma Thomas, Dr. John, Allen Toussaint were among those performing at his memorial.

Eddie Bo - Shoot From The Root

Eddie Bo was a fairly major New Orleans R&B figure ("Check Mr. Popeye") in the '60s and Shoot from the Root is his return on a European label after an extended absence from recording. Think that spells comeback by a veteran going through the correct motions for reverential roots rockers? Well, better think twice, because Bo has crafted a really, really vital disc that almost shockingly makes you believe there's still some fresh life in that venerable New Orleans R&B tradition.

The title track boasts a great groove with tuba, King Floyd-style horns, and very sharp, literate Afro-centric lyrics delivered by Bo in great voice. "Groove in My Soul" just pops on all cylinders; Bo has assembled a collection of graybeard contemporaries and the whole band, especially drummer Herman Ernest, is playing hard without getting in each other's way. You can also hear it in the sharp, sophisticated horn charts and funky rhythm to "Old Fashioned Sookie" and, well, maybe the bottom line of Shoot from the Root is that these veterans sound like they're really having big-time fun playing the music. There are fine ballads ("O'Lady," "I Love You in Every Way") and "Kick It on Back" shows Bo's real knack for funny, smart James Brown-style catch phrases with organ and drums shining in the arrangement. "Will I Ever Learn?" is just a quality, punchy, compact R&B tune and Bo doesn't even bother with an intro to "Let's Get It Straight," jumping right into the verse and singing up a storm supported by nice horns and bring-it-on-home drums. Both tracks leave you saying out loud that this is a great record, that there's life in old New Orleans R&B yet; so does "Fingers," a '50s rock & roll/R&B piano instrumental with Bo tickling the ivories while backing singers chant "Go, Mr. Piano Man, go!" when the horns aren't tossing in nice lines. Yeah, there are a few loose ends, but if you care, you got no idea what serious fun is. "Every Dog's Got a Day" is equally seriously funky, with Eddie Bo singing his butt off, Bo Dollis of the Wild Magnolias hoarse and convincing, and the masterful Johnny Adams coming in clean and serene with a couple of finale soul screams. And Adams is in absolutely devastating form on "Bring It on Home" (an Eddie Bo blues number, not the Sam Cooke hit), with the leader cheering him on. Dollis' hoarse pleading doesn't have a prayer of following Adams' commanding singing, but know what? I can't imagine the idea of giving a good goddamn ever crossed the mind of Bo Dollis or Eddie Bo or anyone else during the session. These veteran musicians grew up playing this music because they loved it and Eddie Bo has crafted a set of challenging songs that's rekindled that spark. Hell, you can say some grooves go on a little too long and that "Dance Dance Dance" is pretty slight, but why quibble? If you like classic New Orleans R&B but figured it had long ago reached a creative dead end, Shoot from the Root is one helluva delightful surprise. ~Review by Don Snowden

A compilation of tremendous New Orleans R&B and soul recordings in the post-Fats Domino era by Cosimo Code website founders: author John Broven, Red Soul Detective Kelly and John Sir Shambling Ridley. The website (www.cosimocode.com) is devoted to collating the 1960s recordings made at the studios of Grammy winner and hall of famer Cosimo Matassa. The master number code was cracked by Scotsman Davie Gordon with help from Ace Records Peter Gibbon, and inspired by the New Orleans Rhythm & Blues Record Label Listings publication by Ace's Ray Topping.

The newly remastered pivotal New Orleans hits by Jessie Hill, Lee Dorsey, Robert Parker and Aaron Neville are joined by influential local recordings by Earl King, Reggie Hall, Danny White, Oliver Morgan, Willie Tee and Johnny Adams. The Eddie Bo and Inez Cheatham track is a big funk anthem. Among the lesser-known recordings are those by the Party Boys, Joe Haywood, Dave Bartholomew (with a hot remake of his favourite, The Monkey ) and Ronnie Barron (whose Did She Mention My Name is written and produced by Mac Dr John Rebennack). Features stellar producers Allen Toussaint, Harold Battiste, Dave Bartholomew and notably Wardell Quezergue, with outstanding session men including Nat Perilliat and Red Tyler (saxes), George Davis (guitar) and Smokey Johnson (drums).

With "Check Mr. Popeye," Eddie Bo had one of the great New Orleans singles of the '60s, but its success was great enough to overshadow the rest of his discography. Of course, it didn't help that his sides for Ric weren't in circulation. Rounder released a collection in 1988 but Ace's 2015 set, Baby I'm Wise: The Complete Ric Singles 1959-1962, is the first to round up the As & Bs of the nine singles Bo released for the label between 1959 and 1962, along with four tracks making their CD debut here. Bo didn't cut "Check Mr. Popeye" until 1962, which means plenty of songs arrived before the hit, and through these it's possible to hear Bo try on a number of different styles. There is a fair share of easy-rolling Fats Domino numbers, a few high-energy groovers ("Every Dog Got His Day"), the swinging mischief of Allen Toussaint ("Dinky Doo"), some relatively straightforward blues ("I Need Someone"), and even a bit of syrupy, string-saturated soul on "What a Fool I've Been." That tune bears a passing allusion to Lloyd Price's "Personality," and Bo wasn't above reworking the hits of others; "Baby I'm Wise" borrows heavily from Little Richard's "Slippin' & Slidin'." The cumulative effect of Eddie Bo dipping his toe into all these different Big Easy styles is that he seems masterful, a man who not only knows all the glories of his hometown, but knows how to showcase their quirks so they shine. -- Allmusic.
