Eddy Clearwater has had a tough time shaking his "Chuck Berry imitator" label, and he includes Berry-tinged numbers at the halfway point and end of this nice, if thoroughly derivative, urban blues set recorded in 1989 for Black and Blue and recently reissued by Evidence on CD, with the familiar country boogie shuffle and tinkling licks. Clearwater could not do a set without the signature "Lay My Guitar Down," and this rendition is surging and enjoyable although inferior to the definitive one. Otherwise, it is a pile-driving and urgently performed date; Clearwater and Will Crosby swap slashing lines, crackling phrases, and answering fills. Clearwater's session contains several robust, entertaining passages, even if there is absolutely nothing you have not heard before. ~Ron Wynn

Shoji Naito probably isn’t a name most blues lovers recognize, but he’s made quite a name for himself behind the scenes since emigrating to the U.S. in 1996 to study guitar and bass at Chicago’s Columbia College.

A gifted harmonica player, too, he started playing the blues professionally at age 16 at home in Toyota, Japan, and quickly started making the rounds of some of the best clubs in the Windy City. Through his college years, he sat in with John Primer, Carey Bell, Willie “Big Eyes” Smith, Lurrie Bell and others.

His big break came 12 years ago, when guitarist Eddy “The Chief” Clearwater invited him to join his band, a relationship that continues today. In addition, Naito performs regularly with Morry Shocat & The Special 20s. As a duo, he and Sochat won the 2013 Chicago Blues Challenge.

In addition, since 1997, he’s worked with legendary harmonica instructor and builder Joe Filisko at the Old Town School Of Folk Music, laying down most of the practice tracks that Filisko uses in his lessons. And he also markets play-along tracks for harp players through his website.

New Cool Old School is Naito’s debut as a front man after appearing on one of Shocat’s releases and producing albums for him and Clearwater. He’s featured on guitar and harp throughout, but hands over the vocals to others on all but one tune. He’s backed by a who’s who of Chicago blues artists, including Clearwater, Billy Flynn, Gerry Hundt, Harlan Terson, Cicero Adams and Marty Binder on guitar, bass and mandolin; Rie “Lee” Kanehira, Erwin Helfer and Sumito “Ariyo” Ariyoshi on keyboards; Marty Binder, Mark Fornek and Flynn on drums. Willie Buck, Katherine Davis, Milwaukee Slim and Clearwater handle most of the vocals, and Grant Kessler sits in on harp on the final cut.

All but two of the cuts here are covers. Everything you’ll hear here was recorded in one take without overdubs and retains the feel you’d experience in an intimate bar during the time most of the authors’ heyday.

Naito’s on harp with Buck handling the vocals for a rousing version of Little Walter’s “I Got To Go” and a traditional take on Muddy Waters’ “Honey Bee” to start the set before Clearwater takes the mike for versions of the Jimmy Reed standards “Big Boss Man” and “I’ll Change My Style.” His style on the reeds is classic Chicago old-school, active, but never intrusive. He’s no copycat, preferring to add his own touches rather than playing like his predecessors note for note. He picks up the six-string for an instrumental cover of Guitar Gable’s “Congo Mombo.” His guitar stylings are crisp and feature single-note runs. On both instruments, he’s slightly behind the beat, driving the rhythm forward.

Davis steps to the mike for Alberta Hunter’s “I Got Myself a Workin’ Man” and her own “Bopp’n And Jumpin The Blues” with Naito on guitar before Milwaukee Slim and Clearwater take turns covering Robert Johnson’s “Sweet Home Chicago” and Big Walter’s “Last Night.” Buck’s back to deliver the Willie Dixon/Muddy original “I’m Ready,” and Eddy takes on Jimmy Rogers’ “Walking By Myself” before Shoji’s talents on the strings are on full display for a version of sax player Sonny Thompson’s “Blues For The Night Owl,” retitled “Sad Night Owl.” Naito and Ariyo trade licks on acoustic harp and piano for their original, “Same Old S’cool,” before Shoji abandons his instruments to sing a version of Rogers’ “Money, Marbles And Chalk” to conclude the set.

Although there’s relatively nothing new or groundbreaking here, New Cool Old School is one sensational album if your tastes run to traditional Chicago blues like mine do. Available through most major retailers, it’s going on my short list as one of the best CDs I’ve heard this year. ~by Marty Gunther

Eddy Clearwater - Flimdoozie / A Real Good Time: Live!

Album: Flimdoozie

Styles: Chicago Blues

01. All About The Blues (5:50)
02. Sugar Baby (3:52)
03. Do This Town Tonight (4:03)
04. Black Night - Falling Down Heavy (7:34)
05. Flimdoozie (4:37)
06. Irs Man (4:15)
07. Sail The Ship (5:31)
08. Don't Take My Blues (6:58)

Along with Magic Slim, Eddy Clearwater is a preeminent torchbearer of Chicago bar-band blues. He's not quite a virtuoso guitarist, but on this reissue from 1986, he has the guts and chops to go head-to-head with Otis Rush for five songs. Clearwater even quotes Rush's famed "All Your Love" lick back at Rush on "Sail the Ship." On all eight cuts, Clearwater's crisp, shouted vocal delivery adds an electric charge to the works, pumping uptempo entries like his "All About the Blues" (Clearwater's own statement of purpose) and lending a defiant edge to Charles Brown's anthem of the downtrodden, "Black Night." The guitar interplay's stunning on the latter, too. The title track lays down a hearty R&B groove, and Clearwater pays homage to one of his mentors, Chuck Berry, in the flat-four rocker "Do This Town Tonight." Song to song, the unflagging dependability of Clearwater's all-around journeyman musicianship makes Flimdoozie thoroughly entertaining. --Ted Drozdowski

13. Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight (3:03)

Eddy Clearwater delivers on the promise of this set's title on his best concert recording to date, recorded at a couple of Indiana nightspots. Those enduring (and endearing) Berry roots surface anew on a storming medley of "A Real Good Time" and "Cool Water," and there are more '50s-style rockers in "Hi-Yo Silver" and "Party at My House." But he exhibits a social conscience on the decided departure "Tear Down the Wall of Hate." ~by Bill Dahl

Recorded originally for Clearwater's own Cleartone label and later leased to Ron Bartolucci's Baron imprint, these late-'70s sides were potent indicators of his maturing blues style. These weren't homemade sessions; all-star sidemen include drummer Casey Jones, guitarist Jimmy Johnson, and saxist Abb Locke. The title cut is a blistering Chuck Berry-styled rocker, "Came Up the Hard Way" displays a firm grasp of the West Side sound, and "A Little Bit of Blues, A Little Bit of Rock & Roll" utilizes a funky groove to foot-stomping advantage. ~Review by Bill Dahl

After the popularity of Storyville’s first best-selling boxed set of Chicago blues recordings, we’re delighted to present another outstanding 8 CD collection from the vaults of MCM Records. As in the first boxed set, the live atmosphere of these unedited performances shines through, revealing the true ambiance of the Chicago Blues club scene in the mid-1970s, as well as the individuals whose talents MCM Records would preserve. They captured an authenticity that rarely surfaced on the major label recordings that some of these artists made.

MCM was a labour of love by a young French woman, Marcelle Chailleux, and her future husband Jacques Morgantini. In the 1950's Jacques had brought the likes of Big Bill Broonzy, Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker to Europe to appear at his French hometown event - a dedicated Chicago blues festival - but it was recent blues convert Marcelle who travelled to Chicago in the mid-1970s to record a unique collection of live performances.

Some of the performances presented here were by men who would become giants of the blues; others were by talented artists who never found wider fame and whose MCM recordings remain the only surviving evidence of their talent.

In this superb collection, you will find rare tracks by Eddie Taylor, Big Mojo Elem, Andrew “Blueblood” McMahon, Big Voice Odom, Hip Lankchan, Eddie Clearwater, Jimmy Dawkins, Jimmy Johnson, Magic Slim, John Littlejohn, Bobby King and The Aces. The recordings stem from famous Chicago blues venues Ma Bea’s, the Golden Slipper and Big Duke’s. Marcelle was only just in time to capture the genuine feel and sound of those old-time clubs before they disappeared. Jimmy Dawkins, bluesman par excellence, was her guide to the 1975 Chicago blues scene, and has said: “It was natural and ‘for real’ without over-preparation. You get the feeling of the room, the music, the audience, and the blues. It was the real thing. Places like Ma Bea’s and the old Golden Slipper are all gone now.” Jacques Morgantini writes in the liner notes: “These records capture the music that was played in the clubs at that time, the real Chicago blues sound! And that was exactly what Marcelle wanted: to give those musicians a chance to get themselves better known”.

Eddie Clearwater, was born in Macon, Mississippi. An excellent guitarist, he is above all an outstanding singer with a beautifully harsh, teasing voice which he uses like an extra instrument. Making the most of this, he runs the emotional scales from desperation to exhuberance - sometimes broken with emotion other times bouyed up with a vibrant lust for life. Eddie Clean/rater's, mastery of the emotional understatement brings a renewed vitality to blues classics like ' Hoochie Coochie Man", "Rock Me Baby", "My Babe" and "Things I Used To Do", and masterly reveals the hidden beauty in less familiar numbers like "Black Night Is Falling" and "Chicago Dailey Blues". Eddie Clearwater, yet another great blues singer who could so easily have remained undiscovered outside his home town ... until now. ~Marcelle Morgantini.

Eddy Clearwater is equally talented as a bluish singer and as an improvising guitarist. On Reservation Blues, he ranges from Chicago blues to rock & roll, throwing in a couple instrumentals too. His repertoire includes both socially relevant lyrics and good-time music, featuring some of the latter when the former gets a bit too somber. Although there are some solid solos from his supporting players (including three guitar spots for Duke Robillard, two fine solos from tenor saxophonist Dennis Taylor, and a guest appearance by Carey Bell on harmonica during "Find Yourself"), Clearwater is the main star throughout. Fortunately, he is heard in prime form, whether happily jamming "I Wouldn't Lay My Guitar Down" and "Blues Cruise" or singing in a more serious mood on "Winds of Change" and "Everything to Gain." A gem. ~Review by Scott Yanow

Over two-plus decades, Bob Corritore has become one of the most reliable sidemen as a talented blues harmonica player, popular with younger musicians and veterans. This compilation features Corritore in a variety of settings over that 20-year period, with all-star bluesmen galore. Each track singles out his exploits with such notable blues legends as Koko Taylor, Louisiana Red, Robert Lockwood, Jr., Eddy Clearwater, Henry Gray, Pinetop Perkins, David "Honeyboy" Edwards, and Little Milton among countless others.

There's no way to pick the best songs (they're all great) unless you favor certain types of blues from boogie, choogling struts, or rough-edged, down-and-dirty Southside Chicago shouts. The funniest track is Nappy Brown's feature "Baby Don't You Tear My Clothes," sung in a deep, ribald manner. In an ultimately classic style, vocalist Lockwood and pianist Gray team up on "That's All Right," while Clearwater takes the cake on an upbeat and joyous "That's My Baby." The lesser known Chief Schabuttie Gilliame cops Howlin' Wolf during "No More Doggin'" and "Tell Me 'Bout It" whiles Louisiana Red comes closest to the immortal style of Muddy Waters.

Throughout is Corritore's biting, literate, clean harmonica playing that fortifies, glues together, and inspires these-well known artists. Nothing less than a fantastic collection of authentic American music, Harmonica Blues is a must-have item for any fan of this music. /Michael G. Nastos, AllMusic

During the 1950s, Chicago’s West Side was a breeding ground for some of the world’s greatest bluesmen. Magic Sam, Otis Rush, Freddie King and others ruled the clubs. With his fierce guitar playing, soulful and emotive vocals and wild stage shows, Eddy “The Chief” Clearwater easily belongs on this list. A Chicago legend, Clearwater is an intense, flamboyant blues-rocking showman. He’s equally comfortable playing the deepest, most heartfelt blues or rocking, good-time party music. DownBeat said, “Left-hander Eddy Clearwater is a forceful six-stringer...He lays down some gritty West Side shuffles and belly-grinding slow blues that highlight his raw chops, soulful vocals, and earthy, humorous lyrics.”

Between his slashing left-handed guitar work, his room-filling vocals, his self-defined “rock-a-blues” style (a forceful mix of blues, rock, rockabilly, country and gospel), his boundless energy and even his signature Indian headdress, Clearwater is among the very finest practitioners of the West Side blues working today. The blues world recognized his talent by giving him the Blues Music Award for Contemporary Blues – Male Artist of the Year in 2001.

~Ron Wynn

This disc is the first in a new series "The Blues Recorded Live In Chicago" capturing the very special atmosphere in the joints of Chicago's black ghetto, West- and Southside created by the great bluesmen playing and not the least by the enthusiastic black audience present at the various venues we are going to visit. This is The Blues of the mid-70s as recorded on the spot, originally produced for the French MCM label but now to appear for the first time including much previously unissued material - on Storyville CDs!

Eddie Clearwater, Jimmy Dawkins, Sylvester Boines and Fred Below make up a blues band which is completely out of the ordinary and one of the most fascinating that blues fans could dream of... Number 1 -4 of this CD is the continuation of their recording at "Ma Bea's" famous club on the West Side in November, 1976 - a session which has already resulted in the CD, "Black Night" (Storyville STCD 8036). For the other tunes on this CD (from 5-13), the tape-recorder at the "Golden Slipper" caught Fred Below's Blues Combo, featuring the well-known Eddie Taylor on guitar and vocals. This veteran of the blues is provided with a strong guitar back-up by Lacy Gibson who takes the two solos on "Red Light". Moreover, fans will easily identify guitarists Eddie Taylor and Lacy Gibson when they improvise one after another on "Big Town Play Boy" or "Blues For Luc". Fred Below may not be the greatest of singers but he certainly gives us a very pleasant and swinging version of "Route 66", starting with his famous and rhythmic "A one and a two... and you know what to do!".

The brief and dazzling life of MCM Records was a labor of love that captured many treasurable live performances from the last flowering of the classic Chicago Blues age. A young French woman Marcelle Chailleux Morgantini was married to Jacques Morgantini who changed her life into American jazz and blues.

Guitarist Jimmy Dawkins was a good friend and helped them in Chicago to meet and hear the many good blues musicians that played at the different clubs in Chicago. Marcelle returned from her Chicago pilgrimage filled with excitement. Says Jacques Morgantini: It was the year of Marcelle’s 50th birthday and she came into some money from her family. She said to me, “I do not want an expensive coat or jewels – I want to go to Chicago to record the blues. She knew that it could only be done if she had her own record label and complete artistic control. Marcelle made three trips to Chicago in 1975,1976 and 1977 and arrived with her Nagra machine, a small mixing desk and a selection of microphones.

She recorded live: Magic Slim, Big Mojo Elem,John Littlejohn, Eddie Clearwater,Eddie Taylor, Bobby King,Jimmy Johnson, Luther Johnson Jr.,Willie Kent, James Lyons,Hip Lankchan,Big Vocie Odom,Bluebloos McMahon, Joe Carter and Jimmy Dawkins at “Ma Bea’s”, “Golden Slipper”, “Queen Bea’s”, and “Big Duke’s”, on Chicago west and south side. Many of the blues musicians had not recorded before and can only been found on the Storyville label that issued all the recordings on CD’s. She was at the right place at the right time.
