In the mighty mighty tradition of "Night Train," "Shotgun," and "Quarter To Three," master saxman Terry Hanck has released "Always" on the Vizztone label. This set rocks from start to finish, and hearkens back to a time when guys like Jr. Walker and Gene "Daddy G" Barge ruled the airwaves. Terry has been around the contemporary scene for quite some time, having toure d with Elvin Bishop for a number of years, and having released four CD's prior to this one. His style encompasses everything from the retro-rock of the fifties to the Maceo Parker-influenced funk of the seventies.

This also is Terry's first CD of all original material. Check out the cool instrumentals "Always" and "Stingy" to get a good idea where Terry's roots lie. There is quite a cast of backing musicians, too. Johnny Soubrand and Kid Anderson work the guitars, Michael Brooks is on bass, and Butch Cousins is on drums. There are some cool special guests, too. Old friend Elvin Bishop drops in on guitar, as well as Los Lobos' Steve Berlin on sax, Jimmy Pugh on B-3, and Tracy Nelson and Vickie Carrico on backing vocals.

Terry's no slouch in the vocal area, either. Honed from years of blowing that sax, he has quite a powerful delivery and range. He has a lot of fun with all these cuts, too. A man that's had enough of bad love says that "Cupid Must Be Stupid to think I'm gonna stay with you!" And, on a softer note, "I've cried My Last Teardrop" is a good 'un for the slow-dancers. "The First Time Around" and "Good Kind Of Lovin'" evoke the classic soul era. And, the swingin' "Deep Fried Twinkies" has a groovy New Orleans-like vibe goin on.

We had two favorites, too. Terry swears he's gonna bust outta his slump, get some real cash money, and promises things are gonna get better in the rowdy "When I Get My Shit Together!" There's some good blues-rock represented in "Good Good Rockin' Goin' On," with Terry's high-end notes wailin' away at the bridge! Terry Hanck and "Always" is a party on a platter, folks. Terry Hanck is a three-time BMA winner for his sax playing and on his latest disc, he demonstrates what a versatile player he is, as the music includes elements of New Orleans, R&B, blues and jazz. Recorded at Kid Anderson’s Greaseland Studio, the disc has five originals and six covers, Terry handling the lead vocals and sax with his regular band plus guests including Rick Estrin, Chris Cain and Tracy Nelson.

The title track leads the way with great rock and roll piano from Jim Pugh and amusing lyrics about getting older but still relishing what life has to offer. In complete contrast, "Smooth Tyrone" tells the tale of a sax player who always steals the girls, Johnny ‘Cat’ Soubrand’s guitar and Terry’s breathy sax adding to the jazzy feel with fine solos. Chris Cain guests on a lengthy treatment of "Early In The Morning", his B.B. King influenced guitar suiting the song with Kid on double bass and Jim switching to organ before three more originals: "Here It Comes" is a mix of early rock and roll with a Mexican border feel; "Come On Back" is an upbeat shuffle with Rick Estrin on harp and the gentle instrumental ballad "Rosita", credited to Terry, Kid and Jim, is the final original.

Tracy Nelson duets with Terry on the country/rock and roll "Spring" and the rest of the album revisits classic tunes. The New Orleans funk of Bobby Charles’ "Why People Like That" gets a minor lyrical update with reference to stealing “your laptop and phone”. Howling Wolf’s "Howlin’ For My Darlin" is terrific with Terry and Cat playing the core riff in unison, Eddie ‘Cleanhead’ Vinson’s "Hold It Right There" adds an R&B dimension and Lightnin’ Hopkins’ "Feel So Bad" closes the album in fine style with plenty of space for Terry to blow his sax. Fans of fifties and sixties sounds are lucky with this new work of singer and sax player Terry Hanck, who gives us a delightful digestible album, with a delicious selection of thirteen songs based on fifties rock ‘n’ roll, New Orleans rhythm and blues in the path of Fats Domino, Ray Charles, Lee Allen and King Curtis, and also has a selection of soul, surf and blues tracks that could get the willies even to a quite bald person. A real colorful festival, a funny enjoyable walk with a right electrifying vision of the most dancing black music of those years of creative magic and splendor.

Five of the thirteen cd tracks are Terry’s own compositions, the rest are ‘covers’ he has updated with some interesting surprising arrangements. An album that must not be overlooked, because it brings you a collection of juicy priceless songs I’m sure will satisfy all your most fancy musical expectations. Brilliant!

Night Train is a competent journeyman set of old school-style R&B, mixing covers with Terry Hanck originals. The covers give a good sense of where Hanck is coming from, as he selects songs from the catalogs of Sam Cooke, Fats Domino, Hank Ballard, and Little Willie John. He plays good smoky saxophone in the spirit of Junior Walker, "Junior's Walk" being an obvious homage to that Motown great.

As a singer, he's not as good; the vocals are only adequate. With its mix of New Orleans rock & roll, early soul, and some blues, it's very much a record steeped in 1950s and 1960s forms of R&B, though one that keeps the torch burning rather than igniting it with a distinctive creative voice. /Richie Unterberger, AllMusic

“HOWLIN’ AT GREASELAND" is an exciting new tribute CD, showcasing the music and lyrics of the legendary Howlin' Wolf.

This collection of recent recordings of songs originally recorded and performed by Howlin Wolf features many of the best Norhtern California artists working today. Rockin Johnny Burgin, Kid Andersen, Aki Kumar & Rick Estrin are just some of the talent on display here along with Wolf's piano player Henry Gray and Wolf emulator Taildragger. The bands all play with the respect and taste required to cover a Howlin Wolf song.......something rarely attempted and seldom done right.........

Here’s a the story of how this unique recording came to be: THE PLACE:  Guitarist and recording engineer Kid Andersen started Greaseland Music Services in San Jose CA as a humble home studio to record and rehearse with his musician friends.  In the last five years, Greaseland has grown to be a locus of exciting blues activity that is known to blues lovers the world over, with a client list including the best in the business such as Chris Cain, Elvin Bishop and more.  The consistent stream of exciting and notable recordings from Greasleand garnered Kid Andersen a Keeping the Blues Alive Award in 2016 from the Blues Foundation.

THE MUSICIANS:  Over the last few years, a core group of loosely affiliated Bay artists became a sort of blues “wrecking crew” — regular players for sessions which seem to go on practically every week, year-round.  These players have an easy camaraderie that comes from working with each other consistently in various combinations, and many of them are featured on “Howlin'”:  Alabama Mike, Rick Estrin, Terry Hanck, Aki Kumar, Johnny Burgin (Rockin' Johnny), Johnny Cat Soubrand, Vance Ehlers, long-time Robert Cray pianist Jimmy Pugh, John Blues Boyd, D’Mar Martin and many others.   Each of the participants has always been inspired by the gripping voice and haunting music of the Chicago blues legend Howlin’ Wolf.  To collaborate with this group and bring the music and spirit of Howlin’ Wolf back to life and back on disk, producer Stephanie Tice brought in two legendary blues singers, Taildragger and Henry Gray.  These two artists have deep personal and professional connections to Howlin’ Wolf.   Taildragger started singing in the early 70s under Wolf’s strict mentorship, and has since performed much of Wolf’s material in addition to his own.   Henry Gray played piano on many of Wolf’s most famous recordings and at 92, he’s considered a national treasure.

For the cherry on top, Kid kept the recording light on as the musicians  spoke among themselves, informally and between takes, about personal remembrances of Howlin’ Wolf.  These unguarded anecdotes turned out to be precious spoken word histories.  Interspersed through the songs on this CD, they illustrate in a unique way the impact Howlin’ Wolf and his music has had over the decades.

For those who love the blues, the thrill of discovering a new artist is still special. Blues singer John "Blues" Boyd just released The Real Deal—at 71 years young—as a testament that the blues continues to be a vital American art form that will never die. Born in Greenwood, Mississippi, Boyd picked cotton as a youngster, worked at hard labor, and loved to sing. Relocating to the Bay Area in the 1980's he was a roofer, sat in at local clubs, retired, and took care of his ailing wife, who passed in 2014. That's when he became a bluesman full time. Under the tutelage of Jim Pugh at Little Village Foundation, and with the production savvy of Kid Anderson from Greaseland Studios, Boyd was able to make an album of pure blues the way they use to do back in the day. He wrote most of the songs, letting Anderson take over the controls and procure all the accompanying musicians.

Opening with the autobiographical title track, there is an immediate sense of an authentic "big sound" upon which Boyd lays his songs. "You Will Discover," has that up tempo Junior Parker feel, while "That's Big," is a rolling Kansas City swing number carried along by honking tenor saxophones. Everyone knows that blues and barbecue go together, and "The Smiling Pig," is a humorous stinging tribute to that perfect combination. The classic west coast shuffle of T-Bone Walker influenced "That Certain Day," and "Be Careful With Your Love, offering a nice cadence where Boyd feels cool and collected. Memphis, and the Stax sound come to mind on "I'm So Weak Right Now," highlighted by the great organ work of Jim Pugh. Shades of an early B.B. King slips into "When Your Eyes Met Mine," contrasted by the Chicago style of "Screaming In The Night," which features Frankie Ramos on the howling sax. "I'm Like A Stranger To You," has him crying and pleading, and "Dona Mae," is a reflective ballad composed as a moving tribute to his wife. The selections come full circle on the closing "John, The Blues Is Calling You," Boyd taking a closer look at himself, and how things turned out. As with many blues singers that came before him, John "Blues" Boyd, is a storyteller who lived an interesting life. He has certainly been there, done that, and now is enjoying the opportunity to sing his songs.
