Stacy Mitchhart was born February 16, 1959 in a suburb of Cincinnati, Ohio. He got his first guitar and took lessons around the age of nine then at the age of nine he taught his father how to play. He grew up listening to his parents albums like Wes Montgomery, Al Hirt, Boots Randolph, Ink Spots and The Mills Brothers. "Growing up in Cincinnati my best friends father was my biggest musical influence. Frank Hedges was an unorthodox storefront preacher who played gospel as the blues. He put me in his band." Some of Mitchhart's other musical influences were Bobby Blues Bland, B.B. King, Albert King, Albert Collins, Carlos Santana, and Sly and The Family Stones. Mitchhart took these influences and started a lifelong career.

In 1991 after a few years on the East Coast, time in L.A. and touring top venues and Festivals, Mitchhart returned home to his hometown. He put together a blues show called Stacy Mitchhart & Blues-You-Can-Use. The band attracted both rock and soul fans. In 1993 he released his first album Blues Transfusion. In 1996 he moved to Nashville,TN. and took up residency as the house band for the hugely popular Bourbon Street Blues and Boogie Bar. Since 1991, Jimmy Jazz (vocals, guitar, drums) and Elmore Jazz (harmonica) - natives of Quimper, France - have continued to pass on their passion for the Devil's music. Inspired by the Swamp Blues of Louisiana and the Chicago Blues of the 50's, they have forged a personal style from which oozes the influence of the stammering electricity of the "roots blues" like Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf.

The two brothers have been at the forefront of the scene since the 90's and have imposed their vibrant blues with rock 'n' roll at the biggest European festivals, and depending on the encounters this fraternal duo can be expanded with a third instrumentalist. Drums played with the feet to hammer the tempo, two incisive guitars and an amplified harmonica, this is enough to awaken the spirits of the pioneers of electric blues from the Windy City and the Louisiana bayou.

Personnel; Jimmy Jazz (vocals, guitar, drums); Elmore Jazz (vocals, harmonica); Mig Toquereau (bass); Philippe Carnot (percussion).

8. Takin' It Back (2:48)
9. What Does It Take (To Win Your Love) (3:51)
10. Angel From Montgomery (3:58)

J.J. Milteau gathers around him some talented accomplices, Michael Robinson, Mike Andersen, Harrison Kennedy, Carlton Moody, under the guidance of Johan Dalgaard to surf on a soundtrack soaked in blues and all the music he has been programming for over twenty years in his show “Bon Temps Rouler”.

“My whole life has been determined by buying my first harmonica when I was fifteen. For me, it truly was The Key To The Highway. Whether it’s Little Walter’s version in 1958, the one, captured on the fly, by Clapton and Duane Allman in 1970, or the one wrongly considered the original by Big Bill Broonzy and Jazz Gillum, the song “Key to the Highway” is undoubtedly considered a classic, even an anthem! Studies on the Blues tend to demonstrate that the lyrics are often to be taken with a grain of salt.

But here we are squarely facing the obvious: the common aspiration for each individual to break free from their circumstances and find a personal and rewarding path. Even though I never thought that the humble “lip destroyer” would serve such a purpose, I must honestly acknowledge that all the encounters that have shaped my life have occurred more or less directly thanks to the Marine Band 1896/20. The little harmonica has been for me, The Key to the Highway.”

Personnel: JJ Milteau (harmonica); Mike Andersen (vocals tracks 1,6); Harrison Kennedy (vocals tracks 2,8); Carlton Moody (vocals tracks 4,7,10); Michael Robinson (vocals tracks 3,5,9); Johan Daalgard (keyboards, percussion); Raphael Chassin (drums, percussion tracks 7,10); David Donatien (congas, percussion); Toma Milteau (drums, percussion track 4); Laurent Vernerey (upright bass).

"Good Day For The Blues" is an album for blues and (slide) guitar lovers and a big recommendation for this group. For Haigis fans anyway. The fact that opinions differ on this voice will not change with the new production. How good that we still have such independent, self-confident and expressive artists in the country. It's anything but mainstream, but it's an album with its own character and that's where its strength lies. Certainly not for every day. But for a good blues day!

3. See You Again (3:18)
4. Good Mind (3:04)

Anna Dukke is a singer of La Mancha origin who grew up in one of the loneliest mountains in the south of the Sierra Morena peninsula. She preferably moves through the musical genres that appeared in the first decades of the 20th century in the United States, ranging from gospel, rhythm and blues and delta blues with influences from rockabilly. Her repertoire consists of her own compositions, but she also covers songs by artists from the 30's, 40's and 50's in a dynamic and very personal way, sometimes accompanied by her acoustic guitar or keyboard.

After her 5-month odyssey through Mexico and the United States, she has not only soaked up the roots from which her music springs, but has also left a deep mark to the point that there are some who want to cross the pond to see her again and others are already calling for her to return and perform at their venues.

Upon her return from America, she decided to record her first record with the artistic production of Al Dual, a master of world rock and roll, and a great musical team. She recorded her first EP at Golden Hen E studios in Madrid and with mastering at Mastering Studio (London). Her EP consists of a fusion composed of her own songs at the purest style of rhythm and blues and gospel. /Translated from Spanish

Irish singer/songwriter Foy Vance spent the past few years laying low, taking a break from touring for the first time in 20 years. Born out of the quiet is his transformative new album, ‘Signs of Life.’ Writing “Sapling” opened Vance’s eyes, the track showing him a way forward. Finding time to look internally into himself for the first time in a long time, “Sapling” brought the artist clarity, forging an open pathway for his next record. Released as one of the first singles off the album, “Sapling” is a slow yet stunning, almost cathartic track with a quiet piano and pulsing beat to guide its themes of birth, rebirth, and renewal along, but it’s Vance’s voice that provides the song its bloodline. The song’s lyrics, chords, and ideas came to Vance during a moment when he realized it was time to fight – and immediately end – all his addictions. Once he discovered it, Signs of Life was born.

Since 1991, Jimmy Jazz (vocals, guitar, drums) and Elmor Jazz (harmonica) - natives of Quimper, France - have continued to pass on their passion for the Devil's music.

Ahl Nana’s music was almost lost to history. The family band, who called themselves L’Orchestre National Mauritanien, had a fundamental role in creating what we now call desert blues, laying the groundwork for artists like Tinariwen and Mdou Moctar by introducing Western instruments into traditional Saharan music. In the 1970s, they were among the most well-known groups in northwestern Africa. Still, it was not common in their native Mauritania to record albums, as music spread largely through concerts and radio performances. Ahl Nana only entered the studio through an extraordinary series of coincidences, and their recordings only survived through an amazing amount of luck. Now, a compilation of Ahl Nana’s music has been released by Radio Martiko after label head Mechiel Vanbelle rediscovered those lost recordings after more than fifty years. “It all started when we were playing in Agadir, in the south of Morocco,” Mouna Mint Nana tells Vanbelle in the liner notes of Ahl Nana: L’Orchestre National Mauritanien. “A local minister [a politician – Ed.] who was a big fan of us wanted us to play for King Hassan II, so he interrupted the live broadcast of the TV news to present the band and to ask the king to invite us.” A military plane flew Ahl Nana from Agadir to Fez, where they played a nationally televised festival in honor of the king. Ali Boussif, owner of Morocco’s legendary Boussiphone label, saw the concert and invited the band to record at his studio in Casablanca.

Chicago-born Duke Tumatoe is a musician/showman who has retained a firm career by fusing gritty R&B, rock, blues, and funk injected with equal parts humor and gut-level sincerity. Tumatoe was a founding member of what would become REO Speedwagon. His tenure with that band was short-lived, leaving in 1969 and forming Duke Tumatoe & the All-Star Frogs. For the next 13 years, they toured relentlessly playing throughout the Midwest on countless college campuses and bars. Because of this grueling tour schedule, the band managed to release two albums, Red Pepper Hot! (1976) and Back to Chicago (1982). In 1983, Tumatoe decided to slow down the pace and break up the Frogs.

He immediately rebounded with the creation of the Power Trio, who recorded Duke's Up for Blind Pig Records. Tumatoe took advantage of the more flexible schedule and formed his own record label, Sweetfinger Music. Over the next several years, Tumatoe released four discs on his label, Dr. Duke (1992), Wild Animals (1994), Greatest Hits Plus (1996), and the all-instrumental Picks & Sticks (1997). Throughout his illustrious career, Tumatoe opened for several legendary figures in blues and rock, including Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, B.B. King, George Thorogood, Fabulous Thunderbirds, and John Fogerty. Fogerty was so taken with Tumatoe's performance, he produced the critically acclaimed 1988 live album I Like My Job! on Warner Bros.

In 1999, Tumatoe signed with the J-Bird label, which released A Ejukatid Man that same year. In 2001, Tumatoe had tongue firmly in cheek with the releases Pompous & Overrated and the raunchy seasonal disc It's Christmas (Let's Have Sex). Duke Tumatoe & the Power Trio appeared from Sweetfinger Records in 2003, followed by 2006's You've Got the Problem! on Blind Pig Records. /Biography by Al Campbell, AllMusic

3. My Lifeline (2:38)
4. My Journey To The Sky (3:49)

Anna Dukke is one of the most powerful female voices in American roots music that we're lucky to have in Spain. Her solid vocal tone, combined with a powerful stage presence, makes it hard to forget her shows. Anna also has the ability to convey the same impression from her live performances to her records, a task not easy and few can boast about. She once again proves it in her second EP. In a more minimalist musical style than her first work, no horns, just strings and drums, in this new 7", Anna brings us 4 tracks where rhythm & blues is the backbone, though sprinkled with traces of rockabilly, gospel, rock 'n' roll and soul.

Three of them are her own compositions built on feelings, intimacies, and personal experiences, and completed with an impressive cover of Sister Rosetta Tharpe's "My Journey To The Sky," chosen from the shelf where songs that touch the deepest part of the soul reside. The result is a balanced, nuanced record that is equally suitable for dancing or sitting back with a honey bourbon. 100% enjoyable!

The Agnostic Mountain Gospel Choir - Ten Thousand

12. Empire State Express (4:17)
13. Dark Holler (3:26)
14. 10,000 Years (3:14)

Much has been made already of the fact that Agnostic Mountain Gospel Choir are not only untrue to their roots (they hail from Calgary), but strangers to their own moniker - one that apparently came to singer Judd as he was walking in the mountains. They are not from the mountains however; neither are they a choir: they do not preach gospel, and maybe they do believe blindly in God. Musically, their appropriation of the sound of the Mississippi Delta and Appalachian mountains has been as well documented as their apparent similarity to both Tom Waits and Captain Beefheart - and valid points all.

The sleeve of Ten Thousand is a customised Hell Note, a play on the Chinese tradition of burying their dead or honouring their ancestors with homemade bank notes redeemable to the carrier/recipient in the afterlife to spend on lavish riches as they see fit. This particular one features a picture of legendary bluesman Son House and perhaps the Agnostics meant for it to be some kind of very post-mortem royalty cheque, the whole of which Son probably won't want to spend all at once. Eternity's a bitch for the finances.

But for all this talk of commandeering, what makes AMGC so interesting is their ability to fuse all the magpiery together and present something so weirdly, so satisfyingly accessible. The foot-stomping neckerchiefed thuggery of opener 'Go Back Home', is saved from angular impenetrability by something as gloriously simple as a handclap motif: a light, clever touch that elevates the gruff tone of the song and affords it a positively barn dance-esque atmosphere.

Likewise with the chunky 'The Boig', which lumbers cheerfully along like a square wheel, alongside singer Judd's wonderfully chewy vocal, field-holler backing and a noise that could only be – once you've seen them live – the sound of drumstick on Twentieth Century Belgian army helmet.

Subsequent tracks range from the dark 'Sippi blues of 'Dumb It Down' and 'Rainstorms In My Knees' to the unabashed dueling banjos of 'You Got It Wrong', while stopping by the porch of 'Nehemiah's Misfortune' for some good-time rockabillying. You just know they've got a stack of moonshine round at theirs - probably in a jar and everything - and who cares if it's not bona fide Appalachian? All goes down the same shoot.

You may know him from his regular gig on the nationally syndicated "Bob and Tom" radio program. You may remember him as the leader of the All-Star Frogs (1970-1983) and the Power Trio (1983-present), doing humorous and raunchy blues originals such as "Tie You Up!" and "More Love, More Money". You also may remember the Tumatoe tours of local clubs and endless spins of his songs on college radio in the '70s and '80s. You may not know that he recorded for Warner Brothers Records (I Like My Job, produced by John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival fame), was a member of REO Speedwagon, and he grew up on the South Side of Chicago, a blues-loving youth who hung with the legends.

Now he's still at it, playing over 200 shows and covering over 60,000 miles annually. And he's reunited with his old pals at Blind Pig Records, celebrating the release of "You've Got the Problem!" As always, the Power Trio's instrumental prowess is the perfect backdrop for Duke's outrageous humor. The title track tells the story of a poor, misunderstood fellow's struggles with his partner ("I don't drink too much, baby - You don't drink enough!"). From there, Duke delivers nonstop musical mayhem that truly evokes the excitement of his legendary live performances. Highlights include the title track, the whimsical "My Baby Is a Nudist", the unhappy tale of a man who's attached to a "Real Mean Woman," which also features some blistering slide guitar and the hangover-inspired "Moanin' After Blues" (includes actual moaning).

After Duke left REO Speedwagon in 1969, he formed Duke Tumatoe & the All-Star Frogs. For the next 13 years, they toured relentlessly playing throughout the Midwest on countless college campuses and bars. Because of this grueling tour schedule, the band managed to release only three albums, Red Pepper Hot (1976), Naughty Child (1980) and Back to Chicago (1982). In 1983, Tumatoe decided to slow down the pace and break up the Frogs. He immediately rebounded with the creation of the Power Trio and recorded Duke's Up (1984). Over the next several years, Tumatoe released four discs on his own Sweetfinger Music label, Dr. Duke (1992), Wild Animals (1994), Greatest Hits Plus (1996), and the all-instrumental Picks & Sticks (1997). Throughout his illustrious career, Tumatoe opened for several legendary figures in blues and rock including Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, B.B. King, George Thorogood, Fabulous Thunderbirds, Doobie Brothers and John Fogerty. Fogerty was so taken with Tumatoe's performance, he produced the critically acclaimed 1988 live album I Like My Job on Warner Bros. In 1999, Tumatoe signed with J-Bird Records where he released A Ejukatid Man that same year. In 2001, Tumatoe had tongue firmly in cheek with the releases Pompous & Overrated and the raunchy seasonal disc It's Christmas (Let's Have Sex).

Tumatoe promises "A good time, a little mischief, and a lot of great music." And yet Duke's fans know he's not all about the joke. "There's a great deal of musical ability in the band," Tumatoe said. They focus on the music, "just as much as on the twists in the lyrical content." Tumatoe learned drums at 10, moved to guitar as a teen, and became active playing in the Chicago area in the '60s. He grew up on the South Side, in the exact time and space of the golden era of electric blues. He knew, and played with the greats, and now can't believe that he took that for granted as a kid. "Those guys were kinda like available, just as a natural course of daily activity. ... You never thought it was such an earth-shaking experience to have grown up in the crux of all that but it really, really was." Tumatoe knew all the "old guys," he said, ran into them every day. "Played with a lot of them," Tumatoe said. "Muddy (Waters), Willie Dixon, Bo Diddley, Buddy Guy and J.B. Hutto to name a few. Having grown up in that city, you just experienced that stuff."

Duke's fans consider him one of music's best-kept secrets and they selfishly admit they want to keep it that way. They know his show will be one of those sweaty, anything can happen things and they look forward to the freely dispensed and practical advice from the Doctor ("When you're in a basement you should drink whiskey").

Mesmerizing funky rhythms, soulful vocals and blistering guitar. Contemporary Mississippi blues musician Eddie Cotton’s energy, style and passion on stage reflect his understanding of what the blues is all about.

A minister’s son, Eddie Cotton Jr. grew up singing and playing gospel music at church and playing the music of blues legends like B.B. King at home. Born in Clinton, Mississippi, he later studied music theory at Jackson State University, then went on to serve as minister of music at his father’s church. This seemingly unlikely combination of musical interests is precisely what engages Cotton’s audiences, who appreciate his combination of classic electric blues with funky rhythms, soulful vocals and some downright blistering guitar playing.

His performances are highlighted by his powerful vocals, delivery of absorbing lyrics, magical expressions, engaging moves, and stunning guitar skill. Whether he’s punctuating old favorites with his own inflections or crooning a Cotton original with stunning energy, audiences are sure to take notice of this blues artist who demonstrates deep respect and appreciation for his craft. With mesmerizing funky rhythms, soulful vocals and blistering guitar playing, his energy, style and passion on stage reflect his understanding of what the blues is all about.

Following his spectacular 2000 debut Live At The Alamo Theater and Extra in 2002, Here I Come, released in 2014 by DeChamp Records, shows the triple threat singer, songwriter and guitarist breaking out and up to establish serious credibility as a major new star demanding and deserving to be heard. The album was nominated for the 2014 Blues Blast Music Award as Soul Blues Album.

Eddie Cotton and his band, presented by the Vicksburg Blues Society, won the International Blues Challenge in January 2015, in Memphis, Tennessee, “effortlessly controlling the crowd with his amazing showmanship and some of the most innovative B.B. King-influenced licks in years,” wrote American Blues Scene.

Altered Five Blues Band has unveiled plans for its highly anticipated new EP, Testifyin’. The 5-song, digital-exclusive release is set for March 22, 2024 on all streaming and download services. The hip Milwaukee quintet is known for its strong brew of tough, original blues and hard-hitting live shows.

Testifyin’ is A5’s seventh studio recording, and the title sums up the message of songs like “You Can’t Win (If It Ain’t Within’),” “I’ve Got the Scars to Prove It,” and the lead single, “Don’t Tell Me I Can’t.” After 22 years on the blues scene, the band has learned a lot about perseverance and determination. Harmonica ace Jason Ricci is featured on “Brand New Bone” and “Whiskey Got Me Married,” and producer Tom Hambridge (Buddy Guy, Susan Tedeschi, Kingfish) once again led the sessions.

The new EP kicks hard like the four award-winning records preceding it. Cryin’ Mercy nabbed “Best Self-Released Album” at the International Blues Challenge in 2015. Charmed & Dangerous garnered "Song of the Year" at the Independent Music Awards and Wisconsin Music Awards in 2018. Guitar World magazine called the title track a “menacing, swampy blues" and it was in regular rotation on SiriusXM’s Bluesville in addition to many other programs and playlists. In 2019, Ten Thousand Watts reached #10 on the Billboard Blues Chart, hit #1 on both the iTunes and Amazon blues charts, while "Great Minds Drink Alike" captured first place in the blues category of the International Songwriting Competition. Holler If You Hear Me debuted at #3 on the Billboard Blues Chart and received three Blues Music Award nominations, including Album of the Year and Song of the Year. Their vinyl LP featured "Great Minds Drink Alike (With Horns)" which also received a BMA nod for Song of the Year.

11. You Can't Stop A Guitar (From Playing The Blues) (3:57)
12. Sliding Into Blue (3:46)

On his latest album, Cadillac Man, Rick Vito includes a song titled “You Can't Stop A Guitar (From Playing the Blues).” That could easily be the motto of Vito's long and successful musical career, and it's certainly the welcome theme of the Grammy-nominated guitarist's first album in five years.

Vito is probably best known for his role in the legendary supergroup Fleetwood Mac from 1987-1991, when he revived the rootsy blues feeling of the band’s early years. In 2008 he partnered with Mick Fleetwood to form the Mick Fleetwood Blues Band and was nominated for a 2010 Grammy in the Best Traditional Blues category as both artist and producer for the album Blue Again.

Vito’s unique slide and lead guitar work has enhanced hundreds of recordings and performances by such legendary artists as Bob Seger, Bonnie Raitt, John Mayall, Albert Collins, John Prine, and many more. Seger called his slide guitar solo on the song “Like A Rock,” “the single most spectacular solo I’d ever heard.” That's the solo that got massive exposure as the guitar voice on a Chevrolet truck commercial that ran from 1991 to 2004.
Vito has been cranking out solo albums since 1992, and Cadillac Man is his first since 2019's Soulshaker. This release of a dozen tracks shows off his haunting slide technique, his songwriting skills with some fresh new material, a welcome dip back into his musical past and one magical cover.

The album slides open with a gorgeous minute of tasty guitar on the sturdy shuffle of “Love Crazy Baby,” featuring another sparkling solo midway, offering a solid sample of what's coming down the tracks. Next up is “It's Two A.M.,” Vito's W.C. Handy Award-winning Song of the Year from 2001, sung then by Shemekia Copeland – “Yeah, I looked at the clock, I saw the time / I heard a voice ring out from the back of my mind / It’s 2 a.m., do you know where your baby is?” The title track chugs along next with Chuck Berry-esque guitar licks, auto-matically conjuring a sweet little road trip: “Take a ride with me baby / A steady rollin’ plan / I got the keys to the highway / I’m a Cadillac Man.”

The exotic “Little Sheba” hints at a woman of many mysteries: “She walks like an angel with a devil within / Tryin’ make you a present of a mortal sin.” The flowing instrumental “Bo In Paradise” follows with its own haunting melody. Another Cadillac drives up in the romping tale, “Gone Like A Cool Breeze” – “We were out in my Ford just cruisin’ by / When a guy in a Cadillac winked his eye / And she was gone.” The solemn ballad “Crying At Midnight” slows things down with a soulful vocal turn: “I was a fool, and I can never make it right / I lost my love forever, and now I’m / Crying at midnight.”

The easy rocking “Barbeque’n Baby” cooks up a bite of slide and adds some lyrical spice: “Well she brought me to her kitchen, and she rattled her pots and pans / Well that BB Baby knew just how to serve a hungry man.” The only cover on the album is Vito's simply gorgeous instrumental interpretation of the gospel song, “Just Another Day,” by Sam Cooke and the Soul Stirrers.

“River's Calling” flows along gently with Vito's vocals forming a duet with himself in a poignant lament as his guitar gently weeps: “I went down to the river / And I stood there on the shore / I heard the river calling / He said the world don’t need you no more.” Vito's sinewy guitar highlights “You Can’t Stop A Guitar (From Playing The Blues)” -- “You know that guitar ain’t lyin’.” His extended muscular solos aptly demonstrate the truth of the title.

The serene instrumental closer, “Sliding Into Blues,” is a masterwork in slide, pouring all the purity of Vito's magical guitar into one final sublime emotional statement. Cadillac Man is delightful testimony that, after all, you can't stop a guitar from playing the blues. ~Jim White

Leif De Leeuw Band - Mighty Fine

03. Southern Man (Feat. Berget Lewis) (4:37)
04. Lone Star (5:40)

Personnel:
Leif de Leeuw – Guitar
Sem Jansen – Guitar and Vocals
Boris Oud – Bass Guitar
Tim Koning – Drums
Joram Bemelmans – Drums
Jeroen Ermens – Hammond and Keys

The latest album 'Mighty Fine' also proves the class of this band. Leif and Sem Jansen (vocals, guitar) fight out the most wonderful guitar duels on the album, excellently supported by Boris Oud (bass), the two drummers Tim Koning and Joram Bemelmans and keyboardist Jeroen Ermens.

The album is opened in a sparkling way by the surging Rosalie . An intimate song with Michel van Dijk-like vocals by Sem Jansen and biting guitar work. Hard To Hold is a Southern Rock song that floats on a Bo Diddley beat. A song that once again features a wonderfully melancholy guitar sound.

A highlight is the cover of Neil Young's Southern Man on which Berget Lewis proves (once again) to be the best Dutch soul singer. The cover has a funky groove with room for melodic guitar work and the screeching Hammond of Jeroen Ermens. The intimately grooving Lone Star then again has a high Allman quality.

Home Wrecker highlights the Ramblin' Man-esque Allman side of the band. The gently swaying Small Town mixes Albatross (Fleetwood Mac)-like guitar work with light Whipping Post (Allmans) influences. Gumbo Man is a heavy funky instrument metal with a lot of Little Feat influence and a leading role for the biting guitar work. Fool For Love is then an intimate soulful song with hard Roy Buchanan-like guitar work.

The album's closing track, Charade Man , is a grimly grooving song with jazz-rock touches.

Once again the Leif de Leeuw Band proves its top class with this excellent album! ~Peter Marinus

8. For Green (6:08)
9. She Put Him On A Diet (4:59)

Felix Cabrera releases his 4th recording titled “For Green” offering a mixture of blues with R&B, rock and Latin grooves. The CD contains nine tracks – seven original songs plus one Bob Dylan track, “Please Crawl Out Your Window”; and one Leiber/Stoller track, “I Keep Forgettin'”. Most of the many dozens of blues albums released every year aren’t worth the powder to blow them up. Blues is simple, traditional music that rewards personal expression but rarely gets any.

Cuban-born harmonica ace Felix Cabrera may be under the spell of Paul Butterfield (and that’s not all bad), but his feeling for the music is all the way there. The Cuban touches are subtle — a bass part here, a touch of clave and congas there — because Cabrera knows that a little goes a long way in the blues. With his collaborator of 30 years, guitarist Arthur Neilson, Cabrera created a modest treasure; a snappy, unpretentious blues record with a lot of grit, grace and charm. /Joel Selvin

The 2m blues giant Michael van Merwyk celebrates his 40th stage anniversary in 2024 with his new album "Blues Everywhere I Go" on Timezone Records. His music is a testament to a deep connection to the roots of the blues, coupled with a sincere passion and an unmistakable sound. As an acclaimed songwriter, he has been able to capture the essence of human emotion in his lyrics and express it with his powerful voice. His musical journey has taken him from the streets of Memphis to the stages of Moscow, and from the far reaches of Scandinavia to the sun-drenched Canary Islands. Van Merwyk's performances are not just concerts, but emotional experiences that take the listener on a journey through the spectrum of human emotions.

The multi-award-winning German guitarist, slide guitarist, singer and songwriter is a "songster" who travels from city to city to play his songs as the soundtrack to an evening in clubs, bars, pubs, festivals and living rooms. For his new album "Blues Everywhere I Go", he has recorded his oldschool deep blues, roots music and boogie with a number of experienced musicians such as blues legend Abi Wallenstein. The music is driven by raw rhythms, intense blues vocals and wild slide guitars. Eight new songs penned by MvM and a cover version of Phil Wiggins' "Cool Down" tell stories of the ups and downs of life and all the shades in between...just the way life goes.

The album was recorded over two days with two different bands in two different studios. For the "Hamburg Session", Abi Wallenstein (guitar), Martin Röttger (drums), Georg Schroeter (piano), Marc Breitfelder (harp) and MvM met at the HOME studios in Hamburg. At the "Bielefeld Session", MvM went into the "Watt Matters Studio" with his companions Ollie Gee (bass), Ollie Spanuth (drums) and the charming duo "White Coffee" (background vocals). The result is an exciting, raw and modern blues album with a distinctive voice, rich groove and lots of slide guitar. And all with the unmistakable musical stamp of Michael van Merwyk. The listener will feel better after listening and leave his blues at the checkroom.
