More piano-based and jazz-influenced than anything else, West Coast Blues is -- in actuality -- the California style, with all of the genre's main practitioners coming to prominence there, if not actual natives of the state in particular. In fact, the state and the style played host to a great many post-war Texas guitar expatriates, and their jazzy, T-Bone Walker style of soloing would become an earmark of the genre. West Coast blues also features smooth, honey-toned vocals, frequently crossing into urban blues territory. The West Coast style was also home to numerous jump-blues practitioners, as many traveling bands of the 1940s ended up taking permanent residence there. Its current practitioners work almost exclusively in the standard small-combo format.

In his home country, blues pianist, vocalist and songwriter Reidar Larsen, with a musical career going back to the mid 1970s, has long been known as ‘Mr Blues’. With a voice and style that defy his Nordic roots - more New Orleans than Norway – Reidar has recorded 12 albums (with 3 Gold awards) since his 1982 debut "I’m A Bluesman" and since the mid 1980s has also built up a solid repertoire of original material with his long-time lyric partner Tony Burton.

Roy Rogers (born July 28, 1950, Redding, California, United States) is an American blues rock slide guitarist and record producer. He was named after the singing cowboy. Rogers plays a variety of guitar styles related to the Delta blues, but is most often recognized for his virtuoso slide work. In 2006 he collaborated with Reidar Larsen for a release in Norway of "Crossing".

Roy Rogers with Kevin Hayes on drums, Jim Pugh on keys, Steve Erhmann on bass, and Omega Rae on background vocals.

Slide guitar master, Roy Rogers, again breaks new ground with his latest and highly anticipated solo album, Into the Wild Blue. Widely known for his work with The Delta Rhythm Kings, John Lee Hooker and Ray Manzarek, Grammy Award-winning Rogers blazes his own path with a solid collection of vocal and instrumental jams and ballads that breaks free from the restraints of convention, unfurling the genres of blues, rock and roots to exotic and exciting faraway places.

Into the Wild Blue is Rogers' first solo effort in five years and is a distillation of a lifetime of myriad musical knowledge and experience; its multiplicity of styles are clearly steeped in tradition but reflect a broad musical sensibility. Rogers' background as a producer, songwriter, singer and unparalleled slide guitarist is extensive: a gifted guitar player by age 13 and influenced by legendary blues icon Robert Johnson, Rogers spent much of his youth hanging out in the vibrant San Francisco music scene during the 60's, gigging solo and with various bands in and around his native Northern California. In 1982, Rogers toured with John Lee Hooker, recording with him in the 90's as well as with BB King and even Miles Davis - experiences that would profoundly expand and mature his musical acumen - honing his exceptional writing, producing and performance talents. It was during this time when Rogers racked up eight Grammy nominations.

A year in the making, Into the Wild Blue is a showcase for Rogers' considerable slide guitar ability; clean and smooth licks executed with deft precision while ranging in mood from Southern Roadhouse Rock & Blues to ethereal and contemplative instrumentals and ballads.

Robert Leroy Johnson (May 8, 1911 – August 16, 1938) was an American singer-songwriter and musician. His landmark recordings in 1936 and 1937, display a combination of singing, guitar skills, and songwriting talent that has influenced later generations of musicians. Johnson's shadowy, poorly documented life and death at age 27 have given rise to much legend, including the Faustian myth that he sold his soul at a crossroads to achieve success. As an itinerant performer who played mostly on street corners, in juke joints, and at Saturday night dances, Johnson had little commercial success or public recognition in his lifetime.

As quintessentially American as corn on the cob or the rodeo, the blues-streaked music created here by slide guitarist Roy Rogers and harmonica player Norton Buffalo marks their first studio collaboration since two early-'90s releases. Buffalo, a longtime Steve Miller Band member, and Rogers, who has played with Bonnie Raitt and John Lee Hooker, are so musically in synch that all 13 of their original songs on this CD serve as engaging testimonials to their friendship. Each West Coaster is a virtuoso on his instrument, but neither engages in showiness. Instead, their phrases combine in low-key expressions of faith, longing, struggle, and triumph. Rogers and Norton aren't outstanding singers, yet they get by without disrupting the special guitar-harp rapport at the crux of the music. Buffalo does deliver his all-time best studio vocal on "If I Were a King." --Frank-John Hadley

Here is a surprise pairing: Roy Rogers, one of the greatest slide guitarists in the world, John Lee Hooker producer and sometime band member, and Shana Morrison, Van Morrison's daughter and new emerging songwriter talent. Together they have released an excellent album. Sassy-voiced Shana's jazzy blues delivery and Roy's country-edged vocals work warmly together - and those arrangement, Wow! The darkly laid-back opening track 'Molly O & Dog Boy' with it's steel guitar touches and acoustic percussion leads you into an album which demonstrates the incredible versatility of Rogers' guitar and confirm what many know - that Roy is a superb producer. Previous albums from Roy can flay you alive with their slide riffs. Here he is never bludgeoning, never subservient, just scarily perfect in his discretion and appropriateness. Tight musicianship: drums and percussion from Jimmy Sanchez, accordion and keyboards from Phil Aalberg, bass from Scoop McGuire, Dana Pandey's tabla and Robert Powell's pedal steel, underpin a great collection of songs and a must-have album. ~S.D. While the extraordinary fiddler Vassar Clements is known for his countless recordings in the world of bluegrass and country music, he's also a convincing blues interpreter. He is matched with a wide-ranging group of musicians and repertoire by producer David Grisman in this delightful Acoustic Disc CD. Clements' playing takes on an almost conversational tone throughout a good part of these sessions, while he is obviously having a rollicking good time with his fellow players, no matter the setting. The legendary bluesman Robert Johnson's "Beatrice Got a Phonograph" is an amazing duet by Clements with Roy Rogers (who sings while playing an amplified Martin guitar), though it is the leader's personal sound that leaves a lasting impression. His fiddle almost seems to smirk throughout Tampa Red's "Dead Cats on the Line," which is also highlighted by Bob Brozman's guitar and Bobby Cochran's lead vocals, with Norton Buffalo providing harmony. It's hard to beat the interplay between Clements, Buffalo (on harmonica), and guitarist Bob Brozman in the trio rendition of "Keep Your Lamp Trimmed and Burning." Clements and Brozman evidently concocted "Fiddlin' and Faddlin'" in the studio, with Brozman also playing percussion on his guitar behind the leader's blistering introductory solo. Elvin Bishop adds a touch of humor with his amusing originals, including the down-home blues "Dirty Drawers" and the funky "That's My Thing," adding Norton Buffalo's soulful harmonica. Maria Muldaur's gritty vocals shine in Doc Watson's "Honey Babe Blues" and "I Ain't Gonna Play No Second Fiddle." Dave Matthews is at the piano for the infectious "Mambo Boogie" (co-written by Clements, Matthews, and Buffalo). All in all, this is a very entertaining meeting by a group of seasoned musicians. ~Ken Dryden

[3:41] 12. Leon Russell, Reese Wynans, Ronnie Earl - I'm No Angel (Greg Allman Solo)

When they fold up their billowing mushroom tent for the final time, 2014 will have been a full-on Allman Brothers year given the variety of concert celebrations, albums, DVDs, and books that flowed copiously throughout it. No other legacy institution continued for so long to not only be relevant, but visionary. Thus, paying tribute to The Allman Brothers Band proves difficult because it’s impossible to live up to the spirit of their performances, and tough to put a unique spin on their songs. At the helm here is John Wesley, a Florida guitarist with some heady friends and fast connections. But the album’s definitely disjointed. Cuts by Pat Travers, Leon Russell with Ronnie Earl, the Oak Ridge Boys with Tinsley Ellis, and others just don’t cut the mustard or flow together overall.

There are several captivating moments, to varying degrees. Molly Hatchet’s treatment of “Melissa” toughens the ode, and a precise version of “Whipping Post” benefits considerably from old friends Jimmy Hall and Steve Morse, singing, and ripping on guitar respectively. Robben Ford takes a run at Elmore James’s “One Way Out” at the same pace the Allman’s made a hit out of it with over forty years ago. His sweet guitar and peerless California soul polish the old blues into a brand new luster. But the brightest spots during these Midnight Rider sessions arrive with Roy Rogers’ treatment of “Jessica,” and Sonny Landreth and Commander Cody’s romp on “Southbound.” Both slide guitar masters offer a uniquely perfect balance of reverence, individuality, and heart. ~Tom Clarke

A northern California-based blues guitarist, Roy Rogers works firmly out of a Delta blues acoustic style and is particularly good with a slide. A member of John Lee Hooker's '80s Coast to Coast Band, Rogers produced and played on Hooker's Grammy-winning comeback album, The Healer, and its follow-up, Mr. Lucky. During the early '70s, Rogers played with a variety of Bay Area bar bands. In 1976, he and harpist David Burgin recorded A Foot in the Door, which was released on Waterhouse Records. For the next few years, he played in various bands before he formed his own, the Delta Rhythm Kings, in 1980. Two years later, John Lee Hooker asked Rogers to join his Coast to Coast Band and the guitarist accepted. Rogers stayed with Hooker for four years, leaving in 1986. That same year, he released his debut album, Chops Not Chaps, on Blind Pig Records. The record was successful with blues audiences and was nominated for a W.C. Handy Award.

In 1987, he released his second solo album, Slidewinder, which was followed two years later by Blues on the Range. In 1990, Rogers produced Hooker's The Healer, and the following year he produced the iconic bluesman's Mr. Lucky, which also won a Grammy. In 1991, Rogers recorded a duet album, R&B, with harmonica player Norton Buffalo. The following year, the duo released another record, Travellin' Tracks. Rogers' output lagged in the mid-'90s, but he worked steadily at the end of the decade, performing concerts across America and recording albums like 1997's Rhythm & Groove and 1998's Pleasure + Pain. He recorded an album in 2001 with Shana Morrison (Van Morrison's daughter) and released an instrumental album entitled Slideways in 2002. A duet album with Norton Buffalo appeared later that year called Roots of Our Nature. Split Decision was issued by Blind Pig Records in 2009. ~Biography by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
