The history of blues music will eventually place Bob Corritore in the position he truly deserves. In the meantime, Bob continues his work of elevating the blues to the status of contemporary music. Perhaps Bob is the most generous, the most ubiquitous, the most respectful, and the most deeply committed musician to the universality of a genre that goes far beyond its musical conceptualization. Roots music, African American music, owes its existence to the commitment of its performers, to the shared responsibility of the great family that has embraced and sustained it.

Corritore embodies an intrinsic value within the blues. As a harmonica player, he is already a hero to all those involved, as a reference point, he is an irreplaceable activist working to preserve and harmonize a collective legacy. Born in Chicago in 1956, he first played on Maxwell Street in the early '70s and soon after moved to Phoenix, where he led the scene by performing and recording tirelessly. From those private sessions, Bob has brought to light true gems in his collection "From The Vaults", documents of an era in which legendary artists shared sessions with Corritore that we’ve gradually discovered over recent years.

His latest unearthed treasure is "Early Blues Sessions", sixteen tracks recorded between 1984 and 2007 with legends like Little Milton, Jimmy Rogers, Robert Lockwood Jr. and Lowell Fulson among many others. From here, we can only thank Bob Corritore not only for his music, but also for his unwavering commitment, his loyalty to the blues, his educational efforts, and his unshakable sense of responsibility in showing future generations how this music has kept its soul alive and contributed to the evolution of 20th-century popular culture.

The album Oh Yeah! on the VizzTone Label Group exemplifies their shared mission statement of delivering old school Chicago blues as it’s meant to be played.

Together with the All-Star backing band on this album Willie and Bob are set up to deliver the goods. One of the unique aspects of this album is the guest appearance of Muddy Waters band alumnus Bob Margolin, whose brilliant guitar work is featured on about 2/3 of the album. This connects all participants to that elusive Muddy Waters sound rarely achieved in today’s blues. John Primer & Bob Corritore - Crawlin' Kingsnake

Album: Crawlin' Kingsnake
Size: 120,8 MB
Time: 51:54
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2024
Styles: Blues, harmonica blues
Art: Full

1. Take A Message (4:24)
2. Crawlin' Kingsnake (3:27)
3. Down In The Bottom (4:28)
4. Hiding Place (4:16)
5. Chains And Things (5:17)
6. Stuff You Gotta Watch (3:31)
7. Rosalee Blues (4:49)
8. You're The One (4:36)
9. Bow Down On Your Knees (1:39)
10. This Little Voice (4:53)
11. Gravel Road (3:41)
12. Feel Like Going Home (6:48)

Crawlin’ Kingsnake is the fourth collaboration album for John Primer and Bob Corritore, two artists who have always had the Chicago spark. It was evident on their first release together of 2013 and on each release since. But with this particular album, a new height has been achieved: a simultaneous, rocking forcefulness, while also exhibiting an uninhibited, gliding easiness. Crawlin’ Kingsnake also features arguably the best possible A team for Chicago blues! With Bob Stroger on the bass, Jimi Primetime Smith on second guitar, Anthony Geraci on the piano, and Wes Starr on drums, this band sounds like the Muddy Waters band of decades ago.

Both Primer and Corritore appear at the top of their game, with Primer recently inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame, as well as numerous award wins, and a Grammy nomination. Likewise, Corritore has been actively hitting the European festival circuit, released five critically acclaimed albums in 2023, was the subject of numerous articles and received numerous nominations, and a number of wins. But all of that is secondary to what happens in the studio, and what you have in your hand is a powerful straight-ahead album of sacred Chicago blues done by two artists who have devoted their entire lives to the purity of the blues.

Bob Corritore is one of the most active and highly regarded blues harmonica players on the scene today. His style passionately carries forward the old school of playing that Corritore learned as a young man directly from many of original pioneers of Chicago Blues. His sympathetic, yet fiery harmonica playing is featured on over 100 releases to date, on labels such as VizzTone, Delta Groove, Delmark, HighTone, HMG, Blue Witch, Blind Pig, Earwig, Ruf, Putumayo and many others. Many of Bob’s acclaimed releases have been nominated or winners for various Handy, Grammy, Living Blues, Blues Music Awards and Blues Blast Music Awards. Bob is also widely recognized for his many roles in the blues, as band leader, club owner, record producer, radio show host, arts foundation founder, and occasional writer. His website and his weekly e-newsletter reflect a life thoroughly invested in the blues.

Living legend John Primer has undisputedly helped build the sound and style of Chicago blues as we know it today. The echoes of tradition bellowing from the birthplaces he played — such as Maxwell Street, Theresa’s, Checkerboard and Rosa’s Lounges — pulse from every chord in his fingers today. In case you missed it, the title track breathes new life into this blues classic, reaching deep into the tradition while at the same time infusing vibrant energy. No doubt a launching pad for great solos, but it’s Primer’s Mississippi-drenched vocals that simply steal the show. /American Blues Scene

Phoenix Blues Rumble is a showcase of the artists from Bob Corritore’s adopted hometown of Phoenix, Arizona. Recorded between 1987 and 2017, it’s a peek into a Southwest US community that has spawned a powerful blues scene.

Blues harp player Bob Corritore moved from Chicago to Phoenix in 1981, and it quickly became a blues hub. Bob played with local bluesmen Tommy Dukes, Chief Schabuttie Gilliame, Big Pete Pearson and Dino Spells, and persuaded his Chicago friend Chico Chism to move to town. Corritore started his long-running radio show, “Those Lowdown Blues” on KJZZ, in 1984; it’s about to celebrate its 49th Anniversary.

He opened the Rhythm Room music club and started bringing blues artists to Phoenix for performances and recording sessions. Those many sessions were to become the fertile ground for his “From the Vaults” album series. Before long Sugaray Rayford moved nearby. Behold the power of Phoenix Blues!

10. Going Back Home (7:54)

Chicago blues guitarist John Primer and Arizona (by way of Chicago) harp master Bob Corritore team up for the first time on this session of raw Chicago blues, Knockin' Around These Blues. It's odd these two have never collaborated on a project, as Primer began playing the blues in the early '70s at the famous Chicago club Theresa's, while, at the same time, Corritore started hanging around the Windy City learning the harp from such legends as Walter Horton, Carey Bell, and Junior Wells.

The ten-track program boasts gutsy, heartfelt cover versions of material by Little Walter ("Blue and Lonesome"), Robert Lockwood Jr. ("Little Boy Blue"), Willie Dixon ("Just Like I Treat You"), Jimmy Reed ("The Clock"), and Lightnin' Hopkins ("Going Back Home"). Rounding out the band are guitarists Billy Flynn and Chris James, pianist Barrelhouse Chuck, bassists Bob Stroger and Patrick Rynn, and Kenny "Beedy Eyes" Smith and Brian Fahey on drums. /Al Campbell, AllMusic

16. Let Me Find Out Your Name (Feat. Willie Buck) (7:58)

No one can bring a blues festival to your living room quite like harmonica master Bob Corritore. One of the blues world’s great team players, his latest release, Somebody Put Bad Luck on Me, features a huge roster of musicians that includes some of today’s most talented performers. Culled from 14 different recording sessions that took place between 2019 and 2023, Corritore’s latest album treats listeners to an extra-large portion of talent and top-notch performances.

Opening track This Little Voice features longtime Corritore collaborator John Primer. As always, Corritore’s muscular harp work perfectly complements Primer’s gritty voice and guitar. Cash Box Kings vocalist Oscar Wilson lends his distinctive voice to the title track, a satisfying slice of no-nonsense Chicago blues. Clean, understated guitar work from Jimi “Primetime” Smith fleshes out the arrange- ment. Detroit blues queen Thornetta Davis’ vocals take center stage on Remember Me. Outstanding piano work from Dave Keyes adds atmosphere, and Corritore contributes one of his finest harp solos. Lurrie Bell’s weathered voice and distinctive guitar work create a lowdown feel on the slow blues Act Like You Love Me. Bob Margolin’s blistering slide guitar solo adds bite.

Some of this collection’s most striking tracks feature soul blues artists performing in a raw, stripped-down setting. On the minor key workout Midnight Love, Johnny Rawls bares his soul on vocals while Shea Marshall’s organ and Doug James’ sax add grit. Corritore, playing delicate, unamplified harmonica, acts as a per- fect musical foil for Rawls. Bobby Rush is his usual sly, charismatic self on the simmering. funky I’m Good as Gone. Chester Thompson’s organ stirs some spice into the mix. On Goin’ Fishin’ Sugaray Rayford gleefully handles the double entendre-laden lyrics. Intertwining gui- tars from Kid Ramos and Johnny Main anchor the arrangement, and Corritore’s harp blowing is once again spot on.

Somebody Put Bad Luck on Me is so packed with outstanding musicianship and deft ensemble playing that listeners are bound to find something new to love with each listen. Even with a discography as extensive as Corritore’s, this release stands out as a gem. /Jon Kleinman, Living Blues

Bob was soon joined by old friend Louisiana Red, and before long they were playing all over town. Drummer Chico Chism soon followed.

Bob started doing a weekly blues radio show, and in 1991 he opened the now legendary blues club the Rhythm Room. He would book his favorite down-home blues artists at the Rhythm Room, and while these artists were in town he would offer a recording session to accompany the booking.

The end results were numerous amazing performances captured for posterity and finally available to the public for the first time via Bob’s “From The Vaults” Series.

Harmonica ace Bob Corritore once again puts together an all-star blues showcase of his amazing friends, the cream of today’s current crop of blues artists, delivering 16 killer songs and electrifying performances! Captured during 12 recording sessions between 2018 and 2022, these 16 hard-hitting tracks deliver pure, unvarnished blues of the highest order. Recorded at Tempest Recording in Tempe Arizona, Corritore’s masterfully understated production captures the urgency of a live performance and the finishing touch to make complete, memorable songs. The glue that holds it all together is the combination of Bob’s focused production work and his expressive “serve the song” harmonica style. Featured vocalists on this set include longtime collaborators Alabama Mike (who contributes four powerful songs), soul/blues/gospel icon Johnny Rawls, salt of the earth Southern bluesman Bill “Howl-N-Madd” Perry, Oscar Wilson, Sugaray Rayford, Diunna Greenleaf, Jimi “Primetime” Smith, Oscar Wilson, Bob Stroger, Francine Reed, and Willie Buck. Corritore has gained a strong presence in today’s blues market by releasing a solid output of music from his storied “Vaults” as well as current gems.

When the 25-year-old Bob Corritore moved from Chicago to Phoenix in 1981, he was soon joined by old friend Louisiana Red, and before long they were playing all over town.

Bob started a weekly blues radio show, and in 1991 he opened the now legendary blues club the Rhythm Room. He would book his favorite blues artists at the club and arrange a recording session, capturing numerous amazing performances, now available via Bob's 'From The Vaults' series. This album features exuberant performances by Honeyboy Edwards, T-Model Ford, Henry Townsend, Big Jack Johnson, Robert 'Bilbo' Walker, Smokey Wilson, Tomcat Courtney, Dave Riley, Pecan Porter, and Al Garrett.

Louisiana Red & Bob Corritore - Tell Me 'Bout It

Size: 117.3 MB
Time: 50:07
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2022
Styles: Electric Blues, Harmonica Blues
Art: Full

01. Mary Dee Shuffle (5:01)
02. Early Morning Blues (3:59)
03. Alabama Train (3:32)
04. Caught Your Man And Gone (4:55)
05. New Jersey Blues (5:30)
06. Freight Train To Ride (3:56)
07. Tell Me 'Bout It (4:09)
08. Earline Who's Been Foolin' You (3:24)
09. Edith Mae (4:29)
10. Bessemer Blues (4:51)
11. Bernice Blues (6:15)

Iverson Minter Jr, better known as Louisiana Red… Born in Vicksburg, Mississippi on March 23, 1936 (although he also claimed to have been born four years earlier in Bessemer, Alabama) and died in Hanover, so far from his disastrous native lands, at the end of February 2012. Many of his personal dramas were widely documented (he lost his mother on his first birthday, and his father was then lynched before his eyes a few years later), and one could detect the source of his tormented character. For my part, I will never forget having programmed it at the Grand Mix, in my hometown of Tourcoing, in March 1999. In a skilfully maintained half-light and in front of a modest fifty spectators, he delivered a solo performance imbued with a penetrating emotion. When I then asked him what he happened to think about when he performed like this in public, he whispered to me: “To my father, I see myself again when I was a child…”, and when his original wife Nigerian woman (who served as his driver, assistant and manager) rebuked him, hitting him: "You're not answering the question, that's not what this young man asked you", he rebuffed her in these terms: “Woman, this is my interview, I answer what I want”. A bit like for the mythical sets of the Velvet Underground at its beginnings, all those who attended this concert still speak of the tremolos in the voice... In Phoenix, Arizona, a scion of Italian immigrants, himself native of Chicago, was one day entrusted with the management of a club located on the outskirts of the city. Baptizing it the Rhythm Room, Bob Corritore has been working there for decades to program what the historical and contemporary blues scene has in terms of wandering talents. Emeritus harmonica player, this frenzied activist never fails to join his guests during their visit, and rarely neglects to take the opportunity to record these performances. The resulting "From The Vaults" series includes a good fifteen titles to date (featuring a panel spanning from the late Henry Gray to Dave Riley, Kid Ramos and John Primer, among others). For this new part of his personal archives, he has selected eleven tracks captured between the year 2000 and 2009 (seven of which are completely unpublished). From the introductory “Mary Dee Shuffle”, the rhythmic imprinted by Brian Fahey and Mario Moreno imprints the seal of the most moist Chicago South Side, where the twirling piano of Matt Bishop and the burning harp of the innkeeper lavish on the vigorous timbre of Louisiana Red the case that suits him. The six strings of Buddy Reed are not to be outdone, and we are immersed there without question in the universe of Muddy Waters. The unreleased “Early Morning Blues” plunges even deeper into this vein, while Red marries the slide licks that McKinley Morganfield used in his time, and the slats of Corritore do the same with those of Big Walter Horton. The man's versatility is then expressed over the swamp "Alabama Train" (which Bob's harp still ignites), but "Caught Your Man And Gone" and "New Jersey Blues" quickly reconnect with Memphis Chicago Wolf blues (hooting in support). As on a good half of the titles, it is the great Chico Chism who officiates at the brooms, delivering the beat in turn determined or bumpy which suits the genre so well. Without an inopportune show-off, Buddy Reed's solo proves to be as tasty and concise as it is relevant, but it is then up to Johnny Rapp to support the Red for a "Freight Train To Ride", where his slide and his singing evoke the angry tone of the late Elmore James. Credited to his ultimate wife, Dora, the titular track once again sides with the Rolling Fork native discovered on the Stovall Plantation, as does "Earline Who's Been Foolin' You" (where Corritore's harp raises the specter of Junior Wells) and “Edith Mae”, worthy of what Muddy dispensed towards the end of the fifties (with again this spine-chilling slide, and a hairy Chism), in the spirit of his “Nineteen Years Old ”. This amazing disc closes with a version of his standard “Bessemer Blues”, followed by a “Bernice Blues” more Morganfieldesque than ever… Passionate fans of vintage Chicago blues, this year begins with an authentic classic of the genre… If you had forgotten what thrills this music can provide, so here comes the time for revisions. ~Patrick Dallonge

13. Look Out (Feat. Alabama Mike) (3:23)
14. I Shall Be Released (Feat. Francine Reed) (5:55)

A good year for the blues continues with another high-profile release in the form of Spider In My Stew out May 14, 21 via VizzTone Label Group, the new offering from harmonica-player, songwriter, producer and all-round living link to the classic Chicago-Blues era, Bob Corritore. Fans of modern blues will need no introduction, but it’s worth repeating a little of Corritore’s impressive bio. This is a man who started young, tuned in by Muddy Waters and learning first-hand from some of the great players: Big Walter Horton, Junior Wells, Big John Wrencher, Carey Bell and others. A recipient of more music awards that can be noted here, Corritore’s playing has graced countless albums. His much-loved radio show, Those Lowdown Blues, is still going strong and his Blues and Roots Concert Club has hosted such luminaries as Bo Diddley, Little Milton and Henry Townsend. If you can judge the worth of a project by its contributors alone, Spider In My Stew is a prospect to be savoured. Guest musicians include Sugaray Rayford, Lurrie Bell, John Primer, Alabama Mike, Johnny Rawls, Bob Margolin, Junior Watson, Kid Ramos, and too many more to mention.

Opener “Tennessee Woman” (featuring Oscar Wilson) whips up a fresh blast of delightfully shuffling, dusty blues. Whirling percussion rattles and skips, barrel-house piano vamps and Corritore’s harp soars. This is a wonderful storm of blues, with a striking arrangement, built around a centrepiece of Cuban-flavoured hand-drums, horn flourishes and subtle guitars. This is first-class playing from musicians who are completely at home with their material. “Soul Food” gets down ‘n dirty with some serious swagger and verve, propelled by Corrtiore’s harp back-beat and easy-rolling drums. There’s a beautiful old-school feel here. The production is balanced so that everything feels raw and real, steering well-clear of the ultra-clean production which is so much in vogue.

From there on in, the quality never wavers. “Don’t Mess With The Messer” (featuring Diunna Greenleaf) could have come straight from Chess or Motown circa 1960. It’s barn-storming, foot-stomping jump blues, with some mercurial high-end piano runs and slip-sliding harmonica. Deep sax and walking bass round out the whole into something quite special. You can imagine this belting out from any jukebox in any juke-joint to instant appeal. The title-track itself is a slow, swampy affair, with haunting echoes and plenty of soul. Over a sparse arrangement, the band summon up the ghosts of Delta blues to great effect. The versatility on display here, from high-energy numbers to gritty, swaying ballads, is quite something.

Blues classic “Wang Dang Doodle” (featuring Shy Perry) races along with zest and zeal. Muscular, edgy guitars bounce and moan, harp flits in and out with cutting energy and the track punches hard. It’s remarkable that Corritore and company manage to make this beloved staple feel fresh and exciting. “Sleeping With The Blues” sways softly with melodic harp and Hammond organ, harmonised vocals and some fine, shuffling drums. “Why Am I Treated So Bad” (featuring Francine Reed) is another highlight, a strutting, funky blues with stop-start dynamics and Reed’s powerful, captivating voice. “Look Out” (featuring Alabama Mike) takes us back to Motown for another satisfying quick-step around the dance floor.

What captures the ear throughout Spider In My Stew is Corritore’s incredible breadth of expression on harp. From light, melodic playfulness to raw power, Corritore can do it all. Backed here by a stellar line up, across fourteen excellent cuts, he presents what amounts to a celebration of the spirit of the blues. Essential listening for any fans of the genre. ~Chris Wheatley

Dave Riley & Bob Corritore - Travelin' The Dirt Road

08. Way Back Home (6:44)
09. Doggone Blues (5:30)
10. Safe At Last (1:59)

Travelin' the Dirt Road is nothing more or less than two bluesmen -- harmonica player Bob Corritore and singer-guitarist Dave Riley -- and a handful of friends cutting loose on acoustic and electric blues. Even though all of the songs on Travelin' the Dirt Road are originals, Corritore and Riley are less interested in innovation than delving deeply into blues tradition. In a sense, the three primary elements, Riley's rich vocals, his stinging guitar work, and Corritore's lively harp work, share the stage together, delivering full-bodied arrangements. Lyrically, songs like "Let's Have Some Fun Tonight" and "My Baby's Gone" haven't traveled very far from the original blues' template: men love women, make love to women, and get left by women. Good times, it seems, are always followed by bad times, and while these clichés (and the sexism that comes with them) are sometimes difficult to take seriously, they -- the lyrics -- may be little more than an excuse to hear a singer like Riley wrap his vocal chords around them. Many of these songs run four, five, six, and even seven minutes, allowing Corritore and Riley plenty of space to jam. With the addition of bass, drums, a second guitar on many cuts, and an occasional piano, Travelin' the Dirt Road is a solid and enjoyable outing. ~Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

Guitarist Kid Ramos and harmonica player/producer Bob Corritore collaborated on four powerful studio recording sessions in Phoenix from the late 1990’s to early 2000’s. These sessions were built around some great vocalists: Henry Gray, Nappy Brown, Big Pete Pearson, Chico Chism, Doctor Fish and Chief Schabuttie Gilliame. The Kid / Corritore combination would seamlessly interweave their characteristic musical backing around each singer’s style and each song’s assignment. The original issue was a benefit CD rushed to provide relief for Kid during his cancer treatment of 2012. This time around Bob researched the vaults to find four spectacular unreleased tracks.
