Precious Little is an album by British blues musician Jeremy Spencer, who was a member of Fleetwood Mac from 1967 to 1971. Released on 18 July 2006, this is his fourth official solo album (his first since 1979) and was released on the Bluestown Records label in Norway, though Bluestown Records later licensed it to Blind Pig Records. The album was recorded over five days in 2005 in at the Juke Joint Studio during the Notodden Blues Festival on an analog 24-track machine. Local musicians were used to back Spencer on all tracks, because he believed that "they have retained the 'purity' of the old blues in their playing". Most of the tracks were self-penned, with the addition of covers of songs by Elmore James and Slim Rhodes. The album was produced by Kjetil Draugedalen and Gaute Fredriksen, and the executive producer was Jostein Forsberg. It was mixed at the Supermono Studio, Oslo, and was mastered by Audun Strype at Strype Audio, Oslo.

"A band is just as good as the drummer"

In a band, the rhythm section is undoubtedly the backbone of the musical event and the archaic need to move to the sound of a drum is probably one of the most fundamental characteristics that make us humans.
Even if it is mostly the front musicians who initially enjoy the listener's attention, it is the special magic of a “groovy” drum beat that unconsciously and naturally casts a spell over people.
The passionate musician Peter Müllerhas internalized this magic wonderfully in the course of his career and he has managed to establish himself as one of the most sought-after drummers in a wide variety of genres. Anyone who has the opportunity to make music with him knows his qualities and, as his friend, I would also like to emphasize the human side.
With this very personally designed CD he gives us his musical calling card and takes us on an impressive journey through various stations of his exciting career with the help of selected flashlights. Enjoy! ~Erik Trauner

Those familiar with the Western Irish coastal region of Sligo, will recognize the statue depicted on this album cover.

This collection of tunes was inspired by this statue of a woman reaching out in hope and prayer and, as the inscription reads, reflecting “…the age-old anguish of a seafaring people who watched and waited for the safe return of loved ones…”

At the same time, these tunes are a dedication to the Irish isle and especially its people, and are an attempt to show forth some of the Irish soul and its heritage. While this music bears a touch of melancholy, it nevertheless carries a hope of a better world.

Furthermore, this collection is in honour of those who are “waiting on shore” of this life to be reunited with the ones they have loved and who have gone on before. A dedication to those “on shore” who are reaching for that love-without-end.

Here is another collection featuring Mona, my favourite guitar beauty! Her creator, Jan Ingar Kvisler, is an excellent Norwegian luthier who specialises in wood and tone, and custom-made her for me in 2007. He, being a man of God, told me that he prayed before each session of working on her creation, that he would make no mistakes.

However, to his dismay, he made three significant blunders. The first was that he had miscalculated the length of her distinctive ebony fretboard, resulting in a shorter scale. The second was that when he was carving out the pick-up shapes on her flamed maple topped body, the router gouged out more than was required, necessitating his replacing the customary P90 plastic covers with custom-sized ones of the same maple wood. The third and crowning mistake, which resulted in me christening her ‘Mona’, is due to the varnish machine malfunctioning, resulting in a tiny pattern of cracks resembling the Mona Lisa painting.

Now you see, all the ‘mistakes’ give her character!

Ah! An encouraging ‘life-lesson’, no? For better or worse, the seeming ‘mistakes’ in our personality or physical make-up can serve to enhance our individuality!

Fleetwood Mac - Live At The BBC (2 CD)

A substantial (and official) supplement to the band's recorded legacy with Peter Green, this double CD features 36 songs broadcasted between 1967 and 1971, in mostly superlative sound. The title, though, isn't 100 percent accurate; half a dozen tracks were recorded shortly after Green left the band, and since Green is still listed as part of the lineup for all but one of these in the liner notes, Castle Communications either has the dates or personnel wrong. Anyway, the music gives a good idea of the range of the band in their earliest, and by many accounts, best incarnation. It is not, however, all blues-rock by any means; quite a few of these are given over to Jeremy Spencer-dominated parodies of '50s rock, and while these are entertaining in a modest fashion, the best moments, unsurprisingly, are when guitarists Danny Kirwan and (more particularly) Green play their own material.

Some of Green's most well-known compositions from the era are here ("Man of the World", "Albatross", "Rattlesnake Shake", and "Oh Well"), and in the usual BBC tradition, these have a sparer and rougher feel than the studio versions, though they don't either match or redefine them. "Preachin'", "Preachin' Blues", and "Early Morning Come" are otherwise unavailable showcases for Spencer, Green, and Kirwan, respectively, that demonstrate their facility with no-nonsense, down-home blues when they got in a serious mood.

While this isn't as essential a collection as Then Play On or the numerous best-of anthologies covering the Peter Green era, it presents more solid evidence of the band's skills in both blues-rock and surprisingly straight rock (a cover of Tim Hardin's "Hang on to a Dream" is the surprise find of the set), though some may find the detours into comedy and '50s rock irksome. /Richie Unterberger, AllMusic

11 Jeremy Spencer - Psychic Waste (6:06)

This BamFest album commemorates the second BamFest event in Wisconsin.

The album kicks off with “Get Your Blues On” and Larry McCray’s infectious guitar style and vocals are a fantastic way to start off this sampler. The funky twang of his guitar and soulful voice are well represented here. “I Know the Reason” features Birddog and Friends. The song features a driving groove and beautiful harp over blows that are just fantastic. Chris Duarte is next and he sets the place en fuego with his “Let’s Have a Party.” The beat is 100 mph and the guitar is aflame in a whirlwind of fire and rocking blues.

Eric Sardinas and Big Motor follow and the track chosen for this live album here is “Worried Blues.” Instead of a huge electric sound we are served up a dobro slide piece with Sardinas growling out the lyrics. He then transitions into the song’s bridge which is in an electrical storm of sound. But then he returns to acoustic and it is just impressive stuff. The evening crowd is quiet behind him, obviously impressed by his per-formance. “Holdin’ Ground” is next. I’ve joked that Bobby Messano is the best guitar player no one has heard of. This guitar star gives it up in this huge guitar piece where Messano demonstrates his craft as few can, the title track from his 2003 album. Beautiful stuff! Wayne Baker Brooks is offered up with “Sooner Or Later,” a great original from his Mystery album. It is a driving, hot tune where Baker shows what he has learned from his musical family.

Sonny Landreth plays “Blue Tarp Blues,” a song about Hurricane Katrina, and “Back to Bayou Teche,” the 125-mile waterway that was an original path of the Mississippi River. The former is a social and political state-ment, the latter a love song asking his chere to pass by the Bayou Teche. Landreth is at his best in these songs, showing off his six string prowess where he can be dark and ominous or light and frivolous. Robben Ford is next in “Lateral Climb” where he shows off his guitar and restraint. This is great show-case of Ford with plenty of air between his notes and superb tone.

Closing things out on the album Is Jeremy Spencer. “Bitter Lemon” is a down tempo piece where this former “Fleetwood Mac” star picks out a soulful sound with individual notes fluttering about like a butterfly. He and the pianist trade off from time to time, tinkling and trickling off notes and riffs together. He and the album close with “Psychic Waste,” another great slide piece where he and the harp player trade off solos nicely.

Spencer's rare solo debut is almost something of a 1970 Fleetwood Mac album that happens to feature Jeremy Spencer as lead vocalist and principal songwriter, since he's backed by Fleetwood Mac's own Danny Kirwan, John McVie, and Mick Fleetwood. (Peter Green appears on just one song, and then only on banjo.) If you think that gave Spencer the opportunity to fully indulge in aspects of Fleetwood Mac that only peeked through intermittently in the group's recordings and shows - namely, his love of formulaic slide blues and '50s oldies pastiches - that's pretty spot-on.

Yet, even though he's not a terribly imaginative songwriter or powerful vocalist, even when posing as a loving satirist, there's still a sense of love and sincerity that comes through stronger here than it does on most similar vanity side projects. Rockabilly, Buddy Holly, doo wop, Bo Diddley, surf, Elvis Presley, and (of course) ham-handed British electric blues all come in for treatments mixing reverence and pisstake humor. "Mean Blues," actually, is funnier than the ridicule the blues-rock boom would have likely been given by outlets like the National Lampoon radio series, which is doubly impressive given that Spencer was very much part of the blues-rock boom he was poking in the eyes. Psychedelic hippie hard rock, too, is given a mockingly sophomoric, working-class filter with "Take a Look Around Mrs. Brown." The album's material might have been funnier live, naturally, but it's fairly funny and/or pleasing, and the styles are varied enough that it doesn't get tiresome. /Richie Unterberger, AllMusic

Jeremy Spencer is best known as the guitarist who deserted Fleetwood Mac in the middle of a tour in favour of a cult. His musical obsessions – now, as then – are rockabilly and Elmore James. Four of the album’s 14 tracks are by James, the great Bluesman, and they are by far the best. ‘Red Hot Mama’ features Spencer and his relaxed, easy slide, backed only by a fine Blues rhythm guitar. Great stuff. At 60, Spencer remains in good voice.

Then there are some 50’s numbers – ‘Sea Of Love’, for example, or Carl Perkins’ ‘Pointed Toe Shoes’ – sung rockabilly fashion, with “huh-uh-huh-huh!” inserted in the middle of words. The album’s worst numbers are the originals, which are preachy. ‘Bitter Lemon’ is about taking misfortune and making – you guessed it – lemonade. Then there’s the overly defensive song, ‘You Don’t Have To Be Black To Be Blue’. If you want to sing the Blues, just throw back your head and sing ’em – don’t explain why. Let your Blues explain themselves. Still, the slide is nice, the musicianship good.

Inside is a collection of songs that come from Spencer's love of the blues. It's an intimate journey but one that will connect profoundly and repeatedly with listeners. Having shared the Mac spotlight for years with Peter Green, here he is happy to do the same with Brett Lucas, a young Detroit guitarist who co-produced and whose band lends sterling support. Throughout this absorbing album are influences from Spencer's life. His take on Elmore James's "Cry For Me Baby", "Stranger Blues", "The Sun Is Shining" and opener "Homesick" (credited to Elmore James' cousin) are all sublime. Compositions from the sixties to modern day such as "Whispering Fields" (a beautiful instrumental), "Earthquake" (inspired by Eddie Cochrane's style) "Aphrodite" (painting a musical picture) sit firmly with "I Walked a Mile With Sorrow" (based on a poem by Robert Browning) and "Secret Sorrow (a Longfellow quote). "Jambo", as the title suggests, finds the band jamming on an old-time swing vibe. Spencer imitates the sound of trumpet/sax A la Louis Armstrong while Brett contributes nifty guitar work. "Refugees" is a re-work of an old 1978 song originally called "Flee". "Merciful Sea" is self-explanatory and the title track was inspired by an obscure, possibly Indian poet called Praveen. Without sounding dated, this collection is a career culmination of a dying technique, emotive, spiritually driven and well worthy of owning. Highly recommended. ~Clive Rawlings

A patchwork quilt of country blues and indie folk that warms the heart with a soulful flair. ~Brent Black / www.criticaljazz.com

The price of fame can be a double edged sword, for Jeremy Spencer there had to be something else. Discovered by Peter Green, this guitar virtuoso quickly made a name for himself as an original member of Fleetwood Mac only to leave on his own terms in 1971. Spencer still has all the goods including soulful vocals, a keen ear, and an approach on the slide guitar that still ranks as one of the finest in the world. Jeremy Spencer joined a Christian organization upon his departure from Fleetwood Mac and even though he continued to perform and write music there was no recorded works till 2005 with the critically acclaimed "Precious Little."

2014 brings Coventry Blue, a soulful patchwork quilt of compositions that are emotionally invested tunes with a spiritual core and for those that flinch at the world spiritual, there is a huge chasm that separates the words religious and spiritual. With age or "mileage" comes a centered maturity that allows compositions to be focused with laser like intensity while embracing a more eclectic warmth that has always been characteristic of Spencer's music. This is Jeremy Spencer all grown up and not turning his back on his blues roots but instead pushing musical ideas forward.

With Coventry Blue, Jeremy Spencer embraces a wide range of influences in Django Reinhardt and Mark Knopfler yet all done with a refurbished execution of a highly personal artistic voice.
Tunes such as "Moonshine Slide' dedicated to his favored blue ceramic slide to "Endlessly" which is a Cliff Richards style love song forty years in the making are highlights filled with technique and a truly inspiring emotive quality that seems to have but placed in the musical witness protection program.

Coventry Blue cuts a wide path through blues, country, jazz and perhaps a deceptively subtle indie folk vibe that should seal the deal for fans young and old. A master class from this Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee, Jeremy Spencer has not lost a step!

This set, recorded at Chess Record's Ter-Mar complex in Chicago, pairs Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac with some of the Windy City's blues legends including Willie Dixon, Otis Spann, Buddy Guy, and David "Honeyboy" Edwards. Put together on short notice, and recorded in one day, the sessions have something of a ramshackle feel, but the energy of the performances transcends any shortcomings on this date. Dixon oversaw the proceedings, and can be heard during the between-song banter giving directions and chastising Walter "Shakey" Horton for missing his cues. Since the Peter Green-led Fleetwood Mac was so directly influenced by Chicago blues, the session acts as a kind of stylistic homecoming for the band. Bassist John McVie and drummer Mick Fleetwood contribute driving rhythms while guitarists Danny Kirwan and Jeremy Spencer lend both rhythms and the occasional lead. Green's stunningly fluid guitar work is at the fore, as usual. But the real treat is picking out the Chess players--Otis Spann's piano on "I Got the Blues," J.T. Brown's tenor sax on Elmore James's "I Can't Hold Out," or Guy and Edwards, who go toe-to-toe with Green on "Red Hot Jam," one of the session's indisputable highlights.

Jeremy Spencer (vocals, guitar, slide guitar); Danny Kirwan, Peter Green (vocals, guitar); John McVie (bass guitar); Mick Fleetwood (drums); Otis Spann (vocals, piano); David Honeyboy Edwards, Buddy Guy (guitar); Big Walter Horton (harmonica); J.T. Brown (tenor saxophone); Willie Dixon (acoustic bass guitar); S.P. Leary (drums).

Like Volume 1, BLUES JAM IN CHICAGO Volume 2 documents collaborations between some of Chess Records' most prominent bluesmen and the late-1960s version of Fleetwood Mac (the blues-rock power outfit, as opposed to the commercially successful soft-rock incarnation from the '70s). Given that the Peter Green-led Fleetwood Mac was already deeply rooted in Chicago blues, the project proved to be a natural for the group, with Green's blues-drenched leads and the chops of Mick Fleetwood (drums), John McVie (bass), Danny Kirwan and Jeremy Spencer (guitars) providing a perfect framework for contributions by Willie Dixon, Otis Spann, and David "Honeyboy" Edwards, among others. Green and company bring an edge to the proceedings, playing with the kind of muscle and unbridled energy associated with rock music. Interestingly, Volume 2 has greater variety in the lineup than Volume 1, with Dixon substituting on bass for McVie on a number of tracks, along with much swapping of vocal duties. This last fact gives the second installment the edge over the first, with Edwards singing on his own tunes ("Honey Boy Blues" is a highlight), and the inimitable Spann singing "Someday Soon Baby" and "Hungry Country Girl." This is one of the finer snapshots of British blues-rock meeting its source.

Jeremy Spencer (vocals, guitar, slide guitar); Danny Kirwan, Peter Green (vocals, guitar); John McVie (bass guitar); Mick Fleetwood (drums); Otis Spann (vocals, piano); David Honeyboy Edwards, Buddy Guy (guitar); Big Walter Horton (harmonica); J.T. Brown (tenor saxophone); Willie Dixon (acoustic bass guitar); S.P. Leary (drums).
