Acclaimed Blues Rock guitarist Anthony Gomes will release his 13th studio album entitled, "High Voltage Blues" on Friday September 23, 2022 via Rat Pak Records. Coming off the heels of his highly successful 2020 #1 Billboard charting release, "Containment Blues", High Voltage Blues is a compilation album that showcases three new studio tracks, along with eleven re-recorded fan favorites and features guest appearances by legendary bassist Billy Sheehan, KoRn drummer Ray Luzier, renown vocalist Bekka Bramlett and The Voice™ contestant Wendy Moten. "We had a lot of fun rocking these songs up" says Anthony. "As an artist, it was great to circle back to some of my past work and look at it from a different perspective. Billy and Ray really pushed the way I play guitar and they added a whole new element, with a little insanity", he laughs. When people ask me what I sound like I tell them, "If B.B. King was in AC/DC, that's what I feel we try and capture. That's High Voltage Blues in a nutshell." From the charging rhythms of album opener "Painted Horse" to the heart wrenching classic "Darkest Before The Dawn", it is clear that Anthony's trademark blues guitar playing lays the bedrock for his latest solo offering. Produced by Peter Carson and mixed by Chris Collier, High Voltage Blues delivers all the power and punch that one would expect from this high-level blues artist.

Anthony Gomes follows up 2018’s Peace, Loud, and Loud Guitars with Containment Blues. Peace, Love, and Loud Guitars was voted Blues Rock Review’s #1 album of 2018, so definitely some expectations for the followup. This album was inspired by the pandemic and is a bit more back to basics and raw than the balls to walls rock of Peace, Loud, and Loud Guitars. Gomes told Blues Rock Review in a recent interview he has a more rockish album nearly complete called Rock and Roll Blues Man, but felt now wasn’t the time to release an album like that.

Even though Containment Blues is a little more stripped-down, the album opens with an upbeat blues rock track, “Make A Good Man (Wanna Be Bad).” “Hell and Half of Georgia” is one of the album’s standouts where Gomes sings about a relationship in which one person does the other wrong and everyone knows about it.

One thing that’s different about Containment Blues is the world influence. Gomes pulled in musicians from Brazil, Sweden, Russia, Venezuela, Canada, and the United States. This album has a lot of nuance to it. “Praying For Rain,” another standout where Gomes sings about never judging a person unless you walk a mile in their shoes features mandolin and banjo, which is a different sound than what we’re used to from Gomes. “This Broken Heart Of Mine,” “The Greatest 4 Letter Word,” and “Until The End of Time” feature violin and cello with the latter also including some Flamenco style guitar.

Gomes really show how well rounded of a musician he is on this album. “Tell Somebody” is a foot-stomping southern rock track that would fit with his New Soul Cowboys work. The album closes out with the jokey and entertaining title track, “Containment Blues,” a relatable acoustic blues song where Gomes laments about his mother-in-law taking the last roll of toilet paper and wishing she’d practice some social distance.

Containment Blues is another winner from Anthony Gomes with no weak tracks in the bunch. While some artists are delaying releasing albums during the pandemic, Gomes was able to turn the situation into a positive as it inspired some truly great songs. Gomes challenged himself with Containment Blues and it pays off as one of the better albums of 2020. ~Pete Francis

I think the only word to describe this album is, “Wow!”. This man is simply amazing.... It’s been hit and miss, but this one was definitely a keeper.
Anthony Gomes is quite the funk/jump-blues player. His guitar rhythms will keep you bouncing around as you listen to him, and his solos will blow you away. A little more flashy (almost every song has a really big finish) than I normally like, but his playing is tasteful all the way. From his opening groove on the title track he’ll hook you, and then spend the rest of the album playing with you before he reels you in. Gomes doesn’t let the music build to excitement; he just starts it off that way. The intro solo to “Gonna Have a Party” will hook you with the first measure. You’ll be energized after the first two songs on this album, and Gomes just keeps going. Don’t think that everything is fast paced here. He slows it down for his tribute to fallen blues musicians with a slow acoustical “Hard Year for the Blues”, and “Monday Kinda Tuesday”.

Peace, Love & Loud Guitars is the hotly anticipated new album by master blues/rock guitarist and vocalist Anthony Gomes. It was produced by Peter Carson and Anthony Gomes for release via the Up 2 Zero label and will arrive on October 19th.

The Toronto native has been a successful recording and touring artist for 20 years. In 2017, he won the European Blues Award for Best Musician/Live Performance. Gomes is also a respected blues scholar; author and the founder of the Music is the Medicine Foundation. For his 13th album, Gomes recorded 12 tracks in St. Louis, Nashville and Memphis with his bandmates – bassist Mike Brignardello, drummer/percussionist Greg Morrow, keyboardist David Smith and acoustic guitarist Chris Leuzinger. It features backing vocalists Angie Primm, Gale Stuart and Devonne Fowlkes, plus Amanda Fish, Albert Castiglia and a host of other ‘gang vocalists.’

The opening track, “Come Down” was a featured video on Rock and Blues Muse on October 5th. It’s set up by some robust gospel singing, propelled by a tribal, tom-thumping drum beat. Gomes beckons to the late B.B. King with his grinding guitar rhythm and soulful singing, “Come down from Heaven, B.B. King/’cause this kingdom has no king/There’s no one here that can wear your crown.” Gomes shreds with no holds barred, paying tribute to the “King of the Blues” by inserting a few of B.B.’s signature ‘swoops’ into the outgoing solo.

“White Trash Princess” is a full throttle blues/rocker about a “Sweet little thing from Texarkana” who “Drives a pick-up truck and wears a pink bandana.” Gomes, who is always an interesting and inventive axman, creates a cool undercurrent during the choruses using some understated wah-wah pedal. Equally inventive are his lyricist skills with narrative and double entendre.

Gomes, a blues historian who holds a master’s degree in his field of study, possesses a deep understanding of how and why the genre works. Combined with his skillset as a musician, he knows how to build songs that are concurrently traditional and modern. Several examples of this are found on Peace, Love & Loud Guitars.

On the powerful “Blues in the First Degree,” Gomes channels B.B. King’s unique vocal style; he also plays a thoroughly contemporary rock guitar solo that features elements of Joe Satriani and Eddie Van Halen.

“The Whiskey Made Me Do It” is a bar chord shuffle showcasing Gomes’ skill at traditional slide guitar. The band establishes an old school feel while the production presents the song as fresh and new.

Gomes sings of blues legend, Robert Johnson in “Stealin’ from the Devil.” It’s a punchy, present-day blues/rocker, where in Gomes promises, “Robert Johnson, I’ll take your soul back/I’m gonna rip up the Devil’s contract.”

“The Only Woman I’ve Ever Loved” is a classic, slow, gut wrencher one would expect to hear in a blues club in decades past. Once again, Carson and Gomes’ production skills are what keep it sounding fresh and of our time.

The frenetic “Peace, Love & Loud Guitars” rocks from the moment it comes out of the gate and doesn’t wait for you to catch up. Leading into the chorus, Gomes declares, “We’re here to make music, not war/There’s three things worth dying for!” The chorus, sung in call-and-response between Gomes and a room full of ‘gang vocalists’ is an anthem.

Gomes co-wrote two songs on the album: “You Are Amazing” with Mark Selby and the closing track, “Take Me Back Home” with Jim Peterik. Both songs slow the pace to allow Gomes the opportunity to pour himself into heartfelt vocal performances, supported by scorching, soulful guitar solos.

Anthony Gomes is thrice blessed as a singer, songwriter and guitarist. As he celebrates 20 years as a successful blues/rock artist, he continues to draw from a bottomless well of creativity and we are all fortunate to sip from his cup. ~By Dave Resto

With two exceptional electric CD's under his belt, Gomes decided to change the pace a little and cut an all acoustic CD. Johnny Winter once stated that performing an all acoustic CD was the hardest thing he had ever done and he never did it again. In contrast, Gomes says it was fairly easy and fun to do. Whether he will ever do another is left to be seen.

This CD features 13 original numbers mostly performed in a hand clapping, soulful gospel blues style. There are, however, a couple of more traditional delta blues numbers such as "Heartbreak Train", "Please be Mine" and "Wolf in the Henhouse" and a playful number "Hamhock Booty" to keep the listener interested. This is an excellent CD which should not be overlooked. ~deepbluereview

Canadian-born guitarist, singer, and songwriter Anthony Gomes is a critically acclaimed chart-topping artist who plays a style of modern electric blues that incorporates elements of rock, soul, R&B, and country. Born in 1970 in Toronto, Canada, to a Portuguese father and a Canadian mother, he began playing guitar in his early teens and moved to Chicago, IL, in the late '90s with hopes of establishing himself as a musician. After honing his craft on the Windy City club circuit, he moved to Nashville, TN, where he found a home for himself amid the city's renowned music scene.

Gomes made his recording debut in 1998 on the Urban Electric label with Blues in Technicolor, followed by Sweet Stringin' Soul in 2000. In 2002 he switched to 33rd Street Records for Unity and proceeded to win the 2003 BluesWax Artist of the Year award. This accolade elevated Gomes to the top of the blues field, and consequently he was able to draw increasingly larger crowds to his live performances, which increased in frequency and scope. Though he didn't release another album until 2006, Gomes' endless touring kept him atop the blues field, as he continued to be nominated for BluesWax Artist of the Year awards several years in a row.

Canadian-born guitarist, singer, and songwriter Anthony Gomes lives by that credo of truth as an artist, constantly challenging himself to expand his explorations of heart and sound. His latest release, Rebel Blue, is a career ’best of’ retrospective that celebrates the acclaimed artist’s vibrant masterwork of blues-based rock, soul and R&B.

Born in Toronto, Canada, to a Portuguese father and a French-Canadian mother, Gomes began playing guitar in his early teens. "On my 14th birthday, my Dad surprised me with the coolest present - a beat up old acoustic guitar. Since then, the guitar has never left my side.” Inspired to write original music, Anthony’s high school band won a local radio station contest, earning $10,000 in prize money and a chance to open for Bon Jovi. Gomes decided it wasn't his path to follow. "I quit the band before all of that could happen. My heart wasn't in it because I wanted to play the blues and roots music. I packed up my bags moved to Chicago to learn blues from the masters.”

Gomes relocated to the Windy City in the late '90s with hopes of establishing himself as a musician. After a brief stint as a sideman for Magic Slim and the Teardrops, Gomes put together his own group and won the first annual Buddy Guy’s Legends “Best Unsigned Blues Band” competition in 1998. After honing his craft on the Windy City club circuit, he moved to Nashville, TN, where he found a home for himself amid the city's renowned music scene. Gomes explains, "I moved to Chicago to be a better musician and then headed down to Nashville to learn more about songwriting."
