Singer/songwriter/guitarist John Primer surrounded himself with a bunch of Chicago Blues all-stars (George Baze, Nick Holt, Earl Howell, Billy Branch) for this mid-'90s release. It was easy to attract these stalwarts for his fifth solo record since Primer himself was already established on the who's who list of Chicago blues. In 1963, he relocated from Mississippi to the Windy City and slowly secured his place in the blues pantheon. By the time these recordings were made, he had already finished regular stints with Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters and Magic Slim (who makes a guest appearance on one track).

On this self-produced disc, John chooses to mix traditional acoustic Delta with electric Chicago blues over the course of 13 tracks that last 60 minutes. The material was recorded between 1991 and 1994. It captures the intensity and vivacity of John's live performances which his other studio material has struggled to deliver.

Magic Slim has released a pile of albums, all of them true to his group's house-rocking credo. The idea this time around was to hook him up with producer Dick Shurman and get Slim to record tunes he hadn't committed to wax yet. With a tight version of the Teardrops aboard (the ubiquitous Nick Holt on bass and vocals, Michael Dotson on rhythm, Allen Kirk on drums, and Slim's son Shawn Holt making a guest appearance on "Young Man's Blues"), Slim turns in a solid effort here. But perhaps the biggest change this time around is the inclusion of four original tunes from Slim, big news for a combo that many consider to be the ultimate blues cover band. This CD reissues a variety of recordings cut by the veteran blues pianist/vocalist Sunnyland Slim during 1981-83 for his private label Airway Records. In his mid-70s at the time, Slim's energetic vocals and powerful piano playing belie his age. As is typical of the pioneer Chicago bluesman, he allocated plenty of solo space to his sidemen (which include Hubert Sumlin, Eddie Taylor, Lurrie Bell or Magic Slim on guitar) although there was never any doubt about who was in control. The intelligent lyrics, high musicianship, mood variation (including two excellent instrumentals) and spirited playing make this a highly enjoyable and recommeded date despite the LP-length playing time. ~Scott Yanow

He learned to play guitar at the age of eight and moved to Chicago in 1952. He was strongly influenced by Lee Jackson, with whom he worked as rhythm guitarist, and is best known for his spell working with Magic Slim from 1973-83. He can be heard on several of Slim’s records, supplying excellent complementary work to the leader’s tough playing, and he also provides occasional lead vocals and compositions. The bulk of this disc emanates from a 1986 session held at the radio station WRDE, catching the combo raw and wild on nice readings of "Mama Talk to Your Daughter," "Bad Avenue," "Gambler," and "Ain't That Nice." These tracks are simply loaded with stinging guitar from Slim and John Primer and it's Primer contributing the lead vocals on "Think" and "She Moves Me." For years he was a man of few words; content, it seemed, to stand at the edge of the spotlight. Now, Teardrops bassist Nick Holt is speaking up — on a debut solo album entitled, "You Better Watch Yourself." Listeners will find Holt with a lot to say and beautiful way of saying it. Fans of Magic Slim and the Teardrops' live shows already know that Nick Holt has been known to sing the occasional number to prime the crowd for the arrival of his brother Slim. With this disc, however, we finally get to sit back, away from the beer-swilling crowd, to sink our teeth into the fare the younger Holt cooks up.

The tracks for "You Better Watch Yourself" were recorded in Chicago and Wolf's home base, Vienna, Austria, between 1989 and 1995. On the disc, Holt spends more than one hour exploring a number of musical styles. He roughs up covers of soul greats Tyrone Davis ("Can I Change My Mind?") and McKinley Mitchell ("The Town I Live In"). He then moves to funk-blues and the more traditional music of Mercy Dee Walton and B.B. King. From start to finish, Holt seems equally comfortable with each style. This freshman outing, however, goes beyond just proven cover numbers. Holt, with John Primer on second guitar and Eddie Shaw often on sax, presents several originals, though not six, as Wolf indicates. Among the best of Holt's compositions is "Sittin' In My Bedroom," a number on which poor Nick laments the anxiety of waiting for his lover to call. At album's close, Holt, in the live setting, also turns in a moving vocal rendition of "As the Years Go Passing By." This is heard to electrify a crowd at the Rockhaus in Vienna in '92. It could be argued that almost anyone could make a decent solo album with the Magic Slim and the Teardrops as their backing band. Holt, however, just made a great one. ~Steven Sharp

As a teenager, Siggi was influenced by Rock n' Roll & Country music.

By cruising around in the clubs in Vienna, he discovered the Blues "life" by listening to Al Cooke & Erik Trauner. At age 19 he had his first stage &appearance & 2 years later he became the lead singer of the Rockability band "The Torpedos". Besides playing as a soloist where he can show his great talent as a Country Blues artist, he is also a wonderful performer as a band musician. His own Blues band, "Hooked On Blues", was founded in 1988. In 1992, "Hooked On Blues" released their album, "I Have To Stop" for Wolf Records which features Bonnie Lee, Magic Slim, John Primer, Nick Holt as guest stars.
