Blues singers sing every song like it might be their last. They have been doing this for so long now that it always feels like the end is near, time is up, and it's the last time around. The songs are dripping with guilt, regret, and hope. They tell tales of lost love, what was, could have been, but never will be. There might be no other profession that demands for personal emotions to be wrung dry in a room full of strangers, performed with conviction and a pulsing backbeat, night after night. Jackie Payne comes from that generation of singers that personifies all of the above, and I Saw The Blues is a raw and real depiction of a man who sings the blues for all it's worth.

Born in Georgia, Jackie Payne first made a local name for himself in Houston, before signing with Stax Records in the 1960's, and was a member of the labels touring revue. He later joined up with the Johnny Otis Orchestra, and was their featured vocalist between 1987 and 2002, resulting in a Grammy nomination in 1993 for "Spirit of the Black Territory Bands." Around this time he was also active in the San Francisco blues scene and cut several records, both solo and with various groups, before joining up with guitarist Steve Edmonson, with whom he released three well received albums, the last being "Overnight Sensation," in 2007, on the Delta Groove label.

Greaseland Studio in San Jose, California is looming large as "the room," where Bay Area blues and soul artists are recording, due in part to the expertise of Kid Anderson, who is the owner, and engineer. His production on this project brought Payne's vocal into the forefront, wisely leaving the man to do his thing, while providing a warm layer of accompaniment. Anderson also did double duty on guitar, and was accompanied by fellow producer Anthony Paule, on guitar as well.

The songs cover the spectrum of the blues from the dismal outlook in "Back To Normal," to the humorous "When The Blues Come Calling," and "I'll Drink Your Bathwater," with its risqué double entendre lyrics. Payne shows that he can also write some fine material and penned six of the twelve songs, highlighted by the title track, which tells of the long road he has traveled. "Kicking Back With The Blues," is reminiscent of those great Malaco recordings, and he brings it back down on "Rock Me With A Steady Roll," leaving plenty of room for the trumpet and sax players to come in and stretch it out.

Payne did not enjoy the release of I Saw The Blues due to a major stroke as the production was being wrapped up, but his spirit and guidance were strong motivators to get the job done. This is a story of a man who seen a lot, paid his dues, and in his own words has no complaints, and no regrets, for Jackie Payne is a blues singer, of which there are genuinely few. /James Nadal, All Bout Jazz

Jackie Payne (born September 26, 1945) is an American blues singer. He was nominated in both 2007 and 2008 for the Blues Music Award for Best Male Soul Blues Artist; an album he recorded with Johnny Otis was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1993. He is the nephew of the blues harmonica player Neal Pattman. Payne was born in Athens, Georgia, United States. His original birth name was William, and he was known as Willie during childhood. He trained as a singer in his father's gospel choir and learned the blues from his uncle, Neal Pattman, who played harmonica. By the age of 13, he was singing professionally with the Allen Swing Band in Atlanta. He later joined an R&B group called The Serenaders.

He moved to Houston, Texas in 1963, at the age of 17, and recorded his first regional hit, "Go Go Train" b/w "I'll Be Home" on the Jetstream label in 1965. The success of that single led to a 45-city tour with the Stax revue, which at the time featured headliners like Otis Redding (to whom Payne's voice has sometimes been compared), Sam & Dave, Rufus Thomas, and Carla Thomas. His career was checked when he entered the United States Army in 1968. He then settled in Culver City, California, performing at The Cover Girl Club with Pee Wee Crayton. Payne was the lead singer for the Johnny Otis Show for fifteen years. He recorded several albums with Otis's band and appeared for many years on the Johnny Otis Saturday morning live radio show broadcast on KPFA-FM. Spirit of the Black Territory Bands, recorded by The Johnny Otis Orchestra, featured Payne on vocals and was nominated for a 1993 Grammy Award.

Payne's 1998 CD, A Day In the Life of a Blues Man, was produced by Kenny Blue Ray for the British JSP Records label. Payne and blues guitarist Steve Edmonson, formed the Jackie Payne Steve Edmonson Band in the late 1990s. The band, which was based in the San Francisco Bay Area, has recorded three albums, Partners in the Blues on the Burnside Records label, Master of the Game and Overnight Sensation on the Delta Groove label. The band won the Contemporary Blues Award for Best Soul Blues Album of 2006 for the Master of the Game. /Wikipedia

Kenny 'Blue' Ray Feat. Jackie Payne - Soulful Blues

Year: 2001
Bitrate: MP3@320K/s (from Flac)
Time: 47:36
Size: 109,0 MB
Styles: Electric blues
Scans: Full

1. A Man Needs His Loving (3:42)
2. Mean Old World (4:00)
3. Road Block (4:51)
4. Voodoo Chile (7:13)
5. Lonesome (3:28)
6. Hot 'N Cold (3:57)
7. Who's Been Talkin' (3:43)
8. Blue Monday (6:24)
9. Stop Thinkin' Take (3:27)
10. Home At Last (3:37)
11. COD (3:08)

This is one of the best electric blues records of the year. No kidding. Kenny "Blue" Ray, underrated Texan guitarist, and soul-blues singer Jackie Payne are a dangerous couple. Kenny "Blue" Ray, an Albert Collins' disciple, has been trading licks with virtually everybody around and in "Soulful Blues" his no-gimmicks no tricks playing is terribly effective; you could not find a note in excess.

Payne has been in the business since the mid-sixties, his voice got power, tone and true emotional depth. The man at the ivories, Audie de Lone, greases the sound and often takes the lead with his Hammond. Likewise, tenor sax aces Cal Green and Rob Sudduth, in addition to a more than solid rhythm section, gives a precious contribution to this wonderful contemporary recording.
