Joe Price - 2 albums: Rain Or Shine / 25 Below

Joe Price grew up in blue collar Waterloo, Iowa. He received his first guitar at age 9 from his brother Butch, who was leaving home for military service. The fire to play slide was lit when he saw Earl Hooker perform at the local music store. He ran home, grabbed a hack saw and went to the neighbor's house. Joe took the handle grip off the neighbor boy's bicycle, proceeded to saw off his first slide and began his career as a blues musician.

Joe moved to Iowa City after high school. The move proved to be a once- in- a-life-time opportunity. The great blues musicians - Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Willy Dixon, KoKo Taylor, JB Hutto, Clifton Chenier, Charles Brown, Homesick James, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee, James Cotton and many more - were using Iowa City as a stop over on their mid-west tours. Joe not only had the chance to see these musicians perform; by that time he was a full-time musician himself and had the opportunity to open the shows. He had the privilege of listening to and learning from the finest blues musicians of the time.

Joe has now been performing for over 30 years. He was inducted into the Iowa Blues Hall of Fame in 2003. He also received the honor of appearing in the National Guitar Catalogue playing the "National ResoLectric Guitar". Joe has 3 single CD's released at this time, featuring his stunning slide work and original songs.

Joe's music is flavored more to the juke joint end of the blues: a bit rough and tons of fun. You have seen the bluesman seated in a chair, driving the rhythm of the song with a thumb like a hammer, while the dancers on the floor are about to bring the house down; that is what Joe Price's shows are all about. Joe is a great example of how one learns to do stuff right - slide technique, study of the masters - and then learns to break all the rules to make his music truly unique and all his own.

Joe Price, an artist cut from the same cloth as the traveling blues men of years past. Despite his critical success, Joe has remained devoted to his fans, giving his best to each and every person, each and every night. He is truly a tangible person in every sense, even while he is a legend-in-the-making. Price has treated lucky patrons and the staff at Luther’s Blues to fine shows time and time again. And all have developed an appreciation for him extending far beyond his musical talent. We would like to share him with the rest of Madison. Although Joe is still the Midwest’s best-kept secret, he won’t be for long.

July, 31, 1982 it was show time. Joe Price walked into Dar’s Bar in Waukon, Iowa and set up a guitar amp, 2 guitar stands, a chair to which he proceeded to tie a foot drum, apparently to keep the thing from escaping as he thumped away on it. He brought out a Gretsch Electric and a battered National Steel guitar. Placing a metal slide on the pinky of his left hand, he closed his eyes and launched into a riotous, rocking sound that grabbed the attention of the club. He played for two hours straight. Sweating and thirsty he stepped off the stage for a break. As the customers gave him a round of applause they began to ask him to let Vicki play. Joe said Vicki who? A tall thin bartender stepped from behind the bar. He handed her his National guitar. She took the stage and played a couple of her own compositions. Over thirty years later the adventure continues.

Their newest offering, Night Owls, contains ten of the couples original tunes, four of Joe’s and six of Vicki’s. The first recording they have done featuring songs the two of them wrote on one CD. It was an exciting project. The couple does not usually write together, so as each of them worked on their separate songs they had to be sure the tunes would work together and live side by side on the finished project. After all these years they have finally collaborated in writing the song Bones, it is their first tune written together. Night Owls was produced by Joe and Vicki , the tracks were recorded and mixed in Nashville by Joe McMahan at Wow Flutter Studio. Joe McMahan also plays the drums on track 10 “A Beer Away”.

Joe and Vicki appear regularly at Buddy Guy’s Legends in Chicago. From coast to coast, and from concerts, to clubs, to outdoor festivals, the Price's singular vision and dazzling, irresistible live performances continue to etch a steady, upward arc.
