NW-based supergroup Lisa Mann’s Northwestern All-Stars is releasing a LIVE album, The Great Women in Blues (Feat. Terrie Odabi), from a live performance at Atlantis Club in Basel, Switzerland for Groove Now Blues Weeks.

The album features 11 songs from the original Great Women in Blues Etta James, Dinah Washington, Mavis Staples, Rosetta Tharpe, Ruth Brown, Big Mama Thornton, Big Maybelle and Koko Taylor.

Since 2010, Patrick Kaiser has hand-selected premier Blues artists to perform at the world renowned Groove Now concert series, held in Basel, Switzerland. He invited two-time Blues Music Award (BMA) winning bassist/ vocalist Lisa Mann and legendary BMA winning drummer Jimi Bott to put together a Pacific Northwest supergroup to perform in the 2023 series. Two brilliant guitarists with distinct musical voices, Ben Rice and Jason “JT” Thomas, were added to the mix, as well as Portland’s own “Boss of the B3”, organist Louis “King Louie” Pain. With the stellar team assembled, Lisa Mann’s Northwestern All-Stars was born.

Patrick asked for a tribute to the great women of Blues music to be among the three nights of shows booked at historic music hall Atlantis Basel. Hence, another voice would need to be added- a voice that represented the depth and history of the art form. When Lisa shared videos of Oakland-based Terrie Odabi, he fell in love with her authentic, unforgettable voice. With the multiple BMA-nominated, internationally acclaimed Odabi on board, the magic formula was complete.

The resulting live album presented here was painstakingly mixed by drummer Jimi Bott at his studio, Roseleaf Recording. He expertly navigated the perils of a live environment, while retaining the raw energy of these spectacular performances.

The album begins with Odabi’s a cappella “Wade in the Water,” a meaningful sermon about the origin of Blues music. It then launches into the Etta James classic “I Sing the Blues,” also delivered by Odabi, and featuring the gritty power of guitarists Rice and Thomas. Then Mann does an uncanny rendition of Dinah Washington’s take on “I Don’t Hurt Anymore,” featuring the masterful “King Louie” Pain on organ. The rest of the album features songs originally sung by Mavis Staples, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Koko Taylor, Ruth Brown, Big Mama Thornton, Etta James and Big Maybelle.

The entire album is undergirded with the undeniable strength of Jimi Bott on drums, bringing his 40 years of experience playing with artists such as Rod Piazza, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, and The Proven Ones. Lisa Mann’s multiple award garnering bass playing rumbles throughout, seamlessly blending with Bott’s commanding style.

The final participant in this live adventure is the audience itself, engaging with an intensity atypical of audiences on the Continent.

West Virginia born singer songwriter and award-winning artist Lisa Mann has a range of skills that has earned her international acclaim as a band leader and sought-after support player. Now based in Portland Oregon, Mann is a two-time Blues Music Award winner for her astounding bass playing, a Blues Blast Sean Costello Rising Star Award winner, and has dozens of awards from the Cascade Blues Association and the Oregon Music Hall of Fame. These much-deserved awards are highlights of an impressive 20-plus year career, but what sets Mann apart is her intellect, compassion, and generous personality. Her new release “Old Girl” is a five song EP, recorded at Primal Studio in Portland by Kevin Hahn, featuring members of her road band “Her Really Good Band;” Jason Thomas on guitars with drummers Michael Ballash and Dave Melyan, along with special guests Louis Pain on Hammond B3, and spirited backing vocals from Sonny Hess, Brian Foxworth, LaRhonda Steele and Arietta Ward. The four new original tracks and an inspired cover from recent “Rock N Roll Hall of Fame” inductee, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, stand as a musical postcard from the heart of the hard-working blues woman, who is wise beyond her years. The title track opens the album with a country-tinged dose of self-analysis from the mid-life perspective of a woman trying to reconcile how to compete in an ever-changing world that holds youth in high esteem. The mid-tempo groove of ‘Old Girl’ has Mann’s strong alto bolstered by sweet B3 lines and chiming guitars. In the album notes Mann gives credit to the inspiration for the rambling happy go lucky track, ‘It’s The Monkeys Or Me,’ to a true story from her old friends. Many a romance has faced the classic ultimatum of choice, but one involving pet primates is hysterical and proves truth is stranger than fiction. Mann spells out the plight of a working woman in the dog-eat-dog world of the music business on the gut bucket funk track ‘Everybody’s Making Money.’ She name checks the hurdles a DYI artist must jump over, while Jason “JT” Thomas throws down sizzling lead guitar and Michael Ballash thunders away on the drum kit. The Godmother of Rock ‘N’ Roll, Sister Rosetta Tharpe was a pioneer in the development of R&B and the electric guitar. Lisa Mann pays loving tribute to her and makes a statement for equal rights on a revved-up cover of one of her signature tunes, ‘That’s All’ (first recorded in 1938), as a plea for love and equality. The timely selection provides poignant commentary on how conflict is often caused by commercial greed. In the times that we live in, Tharpe’s music is needed more than ever. Songs of “In Memoriam” that pay homage to the fallen have long been the stock and trade of accomplished songwriters. Lisa Mann adds her voice to the lexicon penning the dramatic opus ‘Around Here.’ The gospel fueled ballad doesn’t mention the music heroes by name, but Mann’s vivid description of long-gone musical icons brings forth familiar images that any fan can readily picture of local legends who left a legacy through their musical gifts. “They may not be famous, but we will remember them around here.” The EP “Old Girl” from Lisa Mann marks a place of confident introspection from a seasoned artist, who knows herself and her sense of purpose, fashioned into a concise and to the point musical novelette. ~Rick J Bowen

Lisa Mann’s 2014 breakout CD Move On led to increased national and international recognition of the Portlandian’s voluptuous vocals and mastery of the six-string bass. In short order, she won the 2014 Sean Costello Rising Star Award at the Blues Blast Awards and the 2015 Blues Music Award for Bassist of the Year. With her new recording Hard Times, Bad Decisions, which drops in May, she continues to demonstrate the depth of her songwriting and performance abilities through twelve songs, eight of which are originals.

As is her custom, Lisa showcases legendary Oregon artists alongside her own Really Good Band (Jason “JT” Thomas on guitar, Michael Ballash on drums, and Brian Harris on keys) as well as featuring some musicians you might not expect to hear on an independent blues artist’s recording. Vinny Appice (Black Sabbath, Rick Derringer) contributes the drumming track on one cut, Renato Caranto (Esperanza Spalding, Merle Haggard) plays saxophone on another, and Chris Mercer (John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, Pretenders) blows sax on two songs. Running through several of the songs on Hard Times, Bad Decisions, there is a karmic theme, a product of Lisa’s Buddhist beliefs. “We’re in the stream of cause and effect; we can’t extricate ourselves from that – we have to learn how to navigate it,” she explains. As one example, the title cut presents the story of how one woman’s bad choices resulted in her life of prostitution. “Hard times are not our choice, but the bad decisions are within the realm of choice,” Lisa says. “This is about the balance between the karma you inherit and the karma you create. You can do something about that.”

Lisa, who is again nominated this year for the Blues Music Award for bass will embark on her first tour in the United Kingdom in July. ~Stacy Jeffress

Lisa Mann's new CD "Move On" is her most stylistically adventurous work yet. R&B aficionados will appreciate Mann's reverent mining of the royal musical archives of Stax, Motown, and Muscle Shoals to create an impressive modern homage to her rhythm and blues forebears. Originally from West Virginia, Mann's vocals effortlessly straddle the line between the honey sweet warmth of the South, and the force-of-nature sound Mann has cultivated by mastering everything from Metal to Memphis soul. Her clever blues balladry is complimented by her considerable prowess on bass -- and listeners won't need to make any presumptions about whether or not Mann has a persistent case of funk lust. Her bass grooves touch on the hallowed soil of Soul greats James Jamerson and Bob Babbitt.

Mann didn't need to travel far to tap into the West Coast's deep blues talent pool. Fellow Portland, Oregon-based frontman Mitch Kashmar (Delta Groove Records) contributes soaring harmonica acrobatics to several tracks, and Mann's aptly titled backing outfit, the "Really Good Band," featuring guitarist Jeff Knudson, keys guru Brian Harris, and drummer Michael Ballash, provides a contemporary sonic tapestry celebrating the great session gods of the 60's and 70's. Mann's best-of-the-West guest list includes collaborators ripe for the task of conjuring the ghosts of Muscle Shoals and Detroit-past. Northwest vocal stalwarts LaRhonda Steele, Arietta Ward, Richard Arnold and Rae Gordon, superlative soloists in their own right, contribute backing harmonies. Dave Melyan and Alex Shakeri (Insomniacs) swing into the mix for listener's percussive and piano pleasure, as does Sonny "Smokin" Hess on guitar.
