Classic African-American Ballads is a sampling of an important, historic, and engaging slice of America's Black music heritage. The heyday of the Black ballad tradition (1890-1920) left a lasting strain of creativity and a monument to African American life of the time. Ranging from songs created from the heritage of the English ballad, to social commentary vilifying abusive white authority figures, to "blues ballads," this album reminds us of the enormity and constant evolution of African American musical tradition.

Jazz Gillum - The Essential
Bill "Jazz" Gillum (1904-1966) is one of the important harpists of the pre-war Chicago blues. Born in Mississippi, he picked up the harmonica as a child and ran away from home to play street corners for spare change. Gillum arrived in Chicago in 1923 and hooked up with Big Bill Broonzy. After a few sideman dates, he signed in 1934 with the Bluebird label to record as a solo artist. Producer Lester Melrose also provided in a steady stream of session work, but in 1942 Gillum was drafted into the army. After his discharge his harmonica sound was dated and John Lee Williamson was the new king of Chicago bluesharp. Bill "Jazz" Gillum drifted into obscurity and died after a gunshot wound.

An influential figure in the growth of the Southern blues tradition, William “Jazz” Gillum (1904–1966) had the kind of life from which the blues spring. Orphaned, starved, threatened, shot at, beaten, and discriminated against, Gillum’s style, as heard throughout this recording—and as described in the liner notes—is unsurprisingly “sometimes harsh, sometimes poetic, with its expressive delayed beat and strong rhythm, and its bitterness tinged with nostalgia.” He is joined on this album by Arbee Stidham (vocals and guitar) and Memphis Slim (organ and piano), associates from his early professional jobs in Chicago in the 1930s.
