Back in 1966 future John the Revelator singer and bassman Tom Huissen lived in London at the time that the blues scene there exploded. He became pals with Peter Green and witnessed the first rehearsals of Pete’s then new band Fleetwood Mac. Immediately after returning in Holland Tom started to form a blues band modelled after Fleetwood Mac. John the Revelator took off immediately and extensively started gigging the Dutch and European blues circuits that were thriving at the time.

After winning the prestigious Loosdrecht Jazz contest in 1970 record label Decca offered the band a recording contract resulting in the first album “Wild Blues”. Since then band has played all over the European continent and released many blues albums. In recent years John the Revelator has jammed with Peter Green, Snowy White, Chris Farlowe and a bunch of legendary Dutch blues guys. Some of them are featured on the album “Down in the Mud” and on the live DVD “Blues Train to Thalia” which was released in 2007.

After playing all over Europe the band now for the first time will be touring Western Australia in November 2009 and play at the prestigious Bridgetown Blues Festival. In September the new studio album “Underway” will be released.

Personnel: Tom Huissen (lead vocals, bass); Frans ten Kleij (lead & rhythm guitar, harmonica); Paul Dammers (slide & rhythm guitar); Cor Dijkhuizen (drums); Sjoerd Bosma (piano, organ, saxophone, acoustic guitar, vocals).

John The Revelator - Down In The Mud

Year: 2005
Bitrate: MP3@320K/s
Time: 61:41
Size: 142,6 MB
Styles: Electric blues
Scans: Front, sleeve, tray, cd

1. I'm Worried (3:09)
2. Something Inside Of Me (5:20)
3. Long Grey Mare (2:57)
4. Only Getting Second Best (4:02)
5. Let The Good Times Roll (3:03)
6. Before The Beginning (4:49)
7. Down In Virginia (3:03)
8. Worried Mind (4:09)
9. Jumpin' The Gun (3:33)
10. Palace Of The King (3:18)
11. Mean Mistreatin' Mama (3:17)
12. Down In The Mud (3:05)
13. Three Hundred Pounds Of Joy (3:18)
14. Little Red Rooster (3:55)
15. I Ain't Superstitious (4:08)
16. Darkened Room (4:00)
17. Depression (2:25)

This album marks the 35th anniversary of the band. To make the album a special event we invited a couple of friends from past and present. A horn section by Bert Baars was led in. Further musical back up was done by Barrelhouse piano man Han van Dam together with Gus Laporte on guitar. Brainbox singer Kaz Lux lended his unique voice to Freddie King's 'Let The Good Times Roll', 'Only Getting Second Best' and to Peter Green's 'Before The Beginning'. We invited Bintangs bassist/singer Frank Kraaijeveld for a couple of Howlin' Wolf songs.

Then of course there is what you might call the regular Revelator-stuff, this time ranging from rather basic acoustic songs to songs with heavily arranged horn parts by the Alabama Horns. The last two tracks of the album ('Depression'and 'Darkened Room') were written by a heavily jet lagged Tom Huissen who found himself awake in the middle of the night in some lousy hotel room in Miami. Former Revelator keyboardman Sjoerd Bosma plays piano on these tracks that were recorded in his Haarlem home because of the great acoustics.

John The Revelator - Cahow (Blues For A Gadfly Petrel)

11. Willy & The Handjive (3:06)
12. Bullhorn Drifter (5:15)
13. Cahow (Blues For A Gadfly Petrel) (5:44)

This studio album, which was released in 1994, has been sold out for many years. In 1994 the 25th anniversary of the band is celebrated with the studio album "Cahow". It is pure coincidence that the album is named after a highly endangered species in Bermuda petrel. Later, the band realizes that Peter Green became famous by another petrel, the Albatross.

Cahow is a collection of "straightforward" blues songs, from their own song material to reworked covers of Elmore James and Duster Bennett, and introduces the Mississippi Twins on backing vocals.

Personnel: Cor Dijkhuizen (drums & percussion); Paul Dammers (slide & rhythm guitar); Sjoerd Bosma (keyboards & tenor saxophone, vocals); Tom Huissen (bass & vocals); Frans ten Kleij (lead & rhythm guitar, harmonica).

The Mississippi Twins: Jolanda van Bezooijen and Hetty Koopman.

Back in 1966 when Eric Clapton delivered his heavily overdriven wailing blues licks on the “Beano” album with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, the guitar world was completely shaken up. Legend has it that Eric put his hand flat on the controls of his Marshall combo, moved his hand to the right, setting all controls full power in the process. Future Revelator singer and bassman Tom Huissen lived in London at the time that the blues scene triggered by Clapton’s trademark guitar work exploded. He became pals with Peter Green, Eric’s successor in the Bluesbreakers, and witnessed the first rehearsals of Pete’s then new band Fleetwood Mac.

Immediately after returning in Holland Tom started to form a blues band modelled after Fleetwood Mac. Finding the right guys for the job was not too hard and the band started to rehearse with cheap guitars, old tube driven radios for amplifiers and a tyre lever for playing bottleneck guitar. Early in 1969 the band adopted the name “John the Revelator” after the A Capella blues traditional by the great Son House. John the Revelator took off immediately and extensively started gigging the Dutch and European blues circuits that were thriving at the time.

After winning the prestigious Loosdrecht Jazz contest in 1970, record label Decca offered the band a recording contract resulting in the first album Wild Blues. This highly collectable record was re-released on CD in 2003.

Approaching our 50th anniversary we have been toying with the idea of releasing a box set to celebrate this special occasion.
For the new album we invited the original Wild Blues guys from 1970: Charles van den Heuvel (piano), Fred Huissen (drums), Charles van der Steeg (tenor saxophone) and co-founder Jos de Wilde (slide).
Great to see everyone invited was still playing and still had the blues feel from the early days. Even after all those years it felt like they never left the band.
Most of the tracks were recorded live in one take, just like the good old Wild Blues days.
The results can be heard on the new double album “50 & Beyond”.
