Tracy Nelson, one of the most powerful voices in American music, has emerged from a lengthy recording hiatus with the album of a lifetime, a musical self-portrait spanning her entire career. Life Don’t Miss Nobody is a 13 track collection that stretches back to her start as a guitar-picking Wisconsin teen playing coffeehouses through an unparalleled career, now in it’s sixth decade, singing blues, country, New Orleans R&B and gospel, and performing in such storied music meccas as 1960s San Francisco and 1970s Austin in her epic, genre-busting musical journey.

But this is no nostalgia trip. The title song is a brand-new composition from the woman whose “Down So Low” has become a modern standard. She’s kept busy performing and recording with long-time musical friends in projects like Corky Siegel’s Chamber Blues and with the freewheeling all-star Blues Broads – Angela Strehli, Annie Sampson and Dorothy Morrison. Even so, roots lovers have waited a long time for a new Tracy Nelson album, and no one’s more excited than Tracy.

“I haven’t made a record in over 10 years,” she says. “I’ve been wanting to do every one of these songs for a really long time. I wanted to get a little bit of everything, all the kinds of music that I love.”

Life Don’t Miss Nobody is Tracy Nelson’s own Great American Songbook, featuring iconic composers like Hank Williams, Ma Rainey, Willie Dixon, Allen Toussaint, Chuck Berry, Doc Pomus, Sister Rosetta Tharpe and the Founding Father of American Song, Stephen Foster. Foster’s “Hard Times” in here in two settings, both featuring Tracy on 12 string, the first time she’s recorded on guitar since her 1964 debut, Deep Are The Roots.

Tracy’s labor of love includes the album’s personnel. Produced by Roger Alan Nichols (Steven Tyler, Larkin Poe) and tracked at Nashville’s Sound Emporium in just three days, Life Don’t Miss Nobody features the state-of-the-art roots rhythm section of piano masters Kevin McKendree (Delbert McClinton, Brian Setzer) and Steve Conn (Bonnie Raitt, Sonny Landreth), upright and electric bassist Byron House (Robert Plant’s Band of Joy, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band), Nashville A-list drummer John Gardner (Dixie Chicks, Taylor Swift), Larry Chaney (Edwin McCain) and Mike Henderson (SteelDrivers, Chris Stapleton) on guitars.

Marcia Ball - Gatorhythms

Album: Gatorhythms
Size: 80,4 MB
Time: 34:35
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 1989
Styles: Blues, R&B, honky tonk
Art: Full

1. How You Carry On (2:41)
2. La Ti Da (3:42)
3. The Power Of Love (4:16)
4. Mobile (3:10)
5. Find Another Fool (4:21)

7. What's A Girl To Do (3:28)
8. Daddy Said (2:43)
9. You'll Come Around (3:54)
10. Red Hot (3:12)

Marcia Ball explored R&B and honky tonk country on this album, keeping her blues chops in order while expanding her repertoire. She included a pair of tunes by country vocalist Lee Roy Parnell, "What's a Girl to Do" and "Red Hot," doing both in a feisty, attacking fashion. She was also challenging and upbeat on Dr. John's "How You Carry On" and "Find Another Fool." Her third Rounder album, Gatorhythms was one of her most entertaining and dynamic, as Ball became less of an interpreter and more of an individualist. /Ron Wynn, AllMusic

Marcia Ball, born on the Texas/Louisiana border, has long been a superb live performer, delivering her swampy blend of zydeco, blues and gritty R&B with all the force of a Saturday night locomotive, and her many fans have been crying for a live album for years, and now, finally, she's delivered it. Recorded in September 2004 at the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company in Chico, CA as part of the Sierra Center Stage series broadcast on PBS, Marcia Ball Live: Down the Road also serves as a kind of greatest-hits set, with Ball and her gritty, horn-driven road band blasting through favorites that span her career. Make no mistake, Ball comes to party, and from the blistering stomp of "Big Shot" that opens the album, she hardly lets up, and even when she does ease it down, as she does on her wonderful version of Randy Newman's gorgeous "Louisiana 1927," you can still feel the heat of the swamp between the lines. Her zydeco-fueled original, "That's Enough of That Stuff," is a clear highlight, as is "It Hurts to Be in Love," which features a guest duet vocal from Angela Strehli. Ball's road band is tested and solid, providing a gutsy backdrop to her driving piano lines and steamrolling vocals. With the good-time, sassy energy on display here, Down the Road serves as an ideal introduction to Marcia Ball in her truest environment, live on-stage, and for her longtime fans, it is an album they have long been anticipating. A bayou party in a box. ~Steve Leggett

11. Something's Got A Hold Of Me (3:45)

Dreams Come True is an all-star session by vocalists Marcia Ball, Lou Ann Barton and Angela Strehli. The three women sing with a band led by Dr. John and the session features guest appearances by such luminaries as David "Fathead" Newman and Jimmie Vaughan. The music is straight out of the Texas school of roadhouse R&B and blues boogie but it's delivered with a gritty, hearfelt edge, particularly on the part of the three vocalists. Dreams Come True may follow formula, but it's followed with style and affection, which makes it a very enjoyable listen. /Thom Owens, AllMusic

The festival does not aim to be the biggest of its type, but to become Europe's "largest blues experience", which is reflected in their emphasis on quality over quantity.

Blue House is a blues album by Marcia Ball. It is her seventh studio album and was released in 1994.
Marcia is a fine singer who writes many of her own songs, though she is never afraid to record covers where they are suitable. Her albums can be almost relentlessly upbeat, as with Hot tamale baby, but this is generally a much sadder album - more like one would expect from a blues singer.
Marcia still demonstrates her Jerry Lee-ish piano playing here, on the opening Red beans, the third track Down the road and particularly on her cover of Joe Ely's Fingernails, but those are not typical of this particular album.
More typical is the title track, in which Marcia painted her house blue after her man left for good, or St Gabriel, about being sent to prison and later being released with nowhere to go.
This is a fine album that demonstrates Marcia's ability to sing a variety of different types of song.

10. I'm Glad I Did What I Did (3:22)
11. Too Much For Me (2:38)
12. Take A Little Louisiana (3:41)

Marcia Ball has always been a line-straddler. Born in Texas, raised in Louisiana, Ball has crossed over so many times in her 50 year musical career that those state lines are a musical blur, a smudged border between Texas twang and Louisiana second line. The title cut was recorded in Austin, but has a jangly New Orleans second line strut. “When you feel the spirit, step into the light,” Ball instructs her followers, name-checking
Martin Luther King as well as Irma Thomas as prime examples of bright shiners.

Ball assembled a stellar cast for this effort, recorded at two Austin studios and Dockside Studios in Maurice, Louisiana. In addition to her touring band — bassist Don Bennett, drummer Corey Keller, guitarist Mike Schermer, and Eric Bernhardt on tenor sax — Ball has Los Lobos' Steve Berlin on bari as well as producing the project, with Cajun accordinist/guitarist Roddie Romero and Hub City Allstars bandmate Eric Adcock on B-3 guesting on some cuts. Fiery singer/guitarist Carolyn Wonderland is brought in to add her Bonnie Bramlett-style vocals to the mix as well.

“I Got To Find Somebody” is vintage Ball, Fess' carnival rhythms driving the party, Berlin and Bernhardt's dueling bari and tenor honking like a '50s Huey Piano Smith and the Clowns session.

Ball blurs the geographical lines even farther on “Life Of the Party,” stop-and-go salsa that crosses yet another line, into Mexico.

She serves up some modern swamp pop with “What Would I Do Without You” and visits New Orleans at carnival time for a rowdy street parade on “When The Mardi Gras Is Over," vowing she'll be staying till the last float rolls.

“Once In A Lifetime Thing” sounds like something Bonnie Raitt might have cut, bouncy old-school R&B with some horny emphasis from Berlin and Bernhardt.

“World Full Of Love” recalls Ball's earlier work with Irma Thomas and Tracy Nelson on '98's Sing It, but with Kimmie Rhodes and Jolie Godnight sitting in this time for some righteous gospel harmony.

“Too Much For Me” is the reason fans have come out to see Ball for five decades, rowdy piano-pounding rock with a Big Easy accent.

Ball teams up on vocals with Yvette Landry (Pine Leaf Boys, Balfa Toujours, Red Stick Ramblers, Steve Riley) for a Cajun travelogue with “Take a Little Louisiana,” urging participants to take a little Louisiana with you everywhere you go, Romero's accordion whipping up dance floor occupants into a foot-flingin' frenzy.

Ball structured all the songs here like artists used to do back in the 45 rpm days, each cut coming in around 3 minutes. It works really well, giving you just enough of a taste to want to go see her sweaty live shows where she cranks this stuff out all night long.

Back in '01, when her Alligator debut, Presumed Innocent, came out, Ball said she found it difficult to sing in the studio: “It’s finished, it’s static, it’s locked in. You just start changing your mind the week it comes out and you get the rest of your life to second guess it, what you might have done differently, and how you might have wanted it to sound, and end up worrying about it the rest of your life.” She should have no worries this time out. Shine Bright is crafted to do just that for the forseeable future. ~by Grant Britt

From New Orleans to Chicago and Texas, Stevie DuPree & The Delta Flyers explore numerous styles of blues in their fourth studio album, Dr. DuPree’s Love Shop.

The album kicks off with a classic blues shuffle in “Broke Up” and is followed by a funky New Orleans inspired blues, “First Dance,” that features a fabulous Lee Allen inspired sax solo by Texas tenor great John Mills. “My Angel of Mercy” is a haunting ballad, featuring a mellow and heartfelt guitar solo from Travis Stephenson. The most radio friendly tune is “The Witness Tree,” a beautiful country-inspired ballad, featuring DuPree’s best Willie Nelson inspired vocals and yet another John Mills sax solo sure to hit you in the soul. There isn’t a weak track on the record. Most of the rest are solid blues-shuffles that are sure to keep the listener’s foot tapping for all 45 minutes of this album.

There is not much to criticize about this album. At times, Stephenson’s guitar playing is a wee bit predictable (particularly on “Ain’t Gonna Be Your Dog”), but at other times it’s very powerful. The Texas Horns provided a welcome accent to the album an it would have been nice to hear them on a few more tracks. That being said, the groove hard, the lyrics speak to the heart, DuPree’s husky and powerful delivery packs the punch that so many vocalists long for. The band is held together Nick Connolly and Marcia Bell on keys, Quentin Calva on bass and Steve Bundrick and drums. The album is an inspiring performance that contains influences from Texas to Chicago, New Orleans to Memphis, but is sure to strike the soul of the universal listener. ~Nik Rodewald

17. Take This Hammer (Feat. Van Morrison & Taj Mahal) (Radio Version) (5:18)

The theme of friendship has carried Mitch Woods along through his career and has led him to this, his current duets and trios project…. Friends Along The Way. Featuring Guests: Van Morrison, Taj Mahal, Elvin Bishop, Charlie Musselwhite, Ruthie Foster, Joe Louis Walker, Maria Muldaur, Cyril Neville, Marcia Ball, John Hammond, Kenny Neal, James Cotton, John Lee Hooker and more… Mitch Woods has delivered a career spanning tour de force. What you hear on these songs is a simple duo or trio of musicians each expressing their innermost feelings and emotions through their instrument….the voice, piano, guitar, harmonica, tambourine…anything that can communicate the feelings, the rhythms of life to the audience. Friends Along The Way finds Mitch reaching into his historical sense of music. He reaches backwards to the roots rather than forward for his inspiration. This shines through on the first single “Take This Hammer” featuring a stunning vocal performance from Van Morrison and backed on guitar by Taj Mahal and of course Mitch Woods on piano. With Friends Along The Way, Mitch wanted to get a chance to play with some of his contemporaries in an intimate and mostly unplugged environment. The piano as an instrument lends itself to this format so perfectly. Mitch can play rhythm, lead, bass, and sing while accompanying some of his friends, who happen to be today’s blues and musical greats. It is a great instrument for bringing out the best of these awesome artists who are keeping the blues flame burning for generations to come. Some say music is a gift. It is a gift, not only to the person who performs it but to the world. The musicians you hear in these songs have spent a lifetime doing what they love to do….play music. Enjoy…this album is Mitch Wood’s gift to you.

Various - Blues 66 (3 parts)

“(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66”, often rendered simply as “Route 66”, is a popular song and rhythm and blues standard, composed in 1946 by American songwriter Bobby Troup. It was first recorded in the same year by Nat King Cole, and was subsequently covered by many artists including Chuck Berry in 1961, The Rolling Stones in 1964, and Depeche Mode in 1987. The song’s lyrics follow the path of the U.S. Route 66 highway, which used to run a long distance across the U.S., going from Chicago, Illinois, to Los Angeles, California.

But regardless of length and coverage, Route 66 stands alone among American thoroughfares with regard to history and lore. Jazz, blues, folk, R&B and rock n’ roll have all traveled along the nation’s most iconic stretch of blacktop.

The Texas Horns have been blowing audiences away on stages and on record since 1999. Now we finally get to hear them celebrate their own sound on CD with some of their closest friends in the music business.

Mark ‘Kaz’ Kazanoff, John Mills, and Adalberto ‘Al’ Gomez have truly been there/done that, producing and backing a who’s who of blues, soul, and rock bands – inducing Bonnie Raitt, Buddy Guy, Dr. John, Los Lobos, Los Lonely Boys, the Allman Brothers Band and more – and creating their spontaneous horn section magic on stages all over North America. These guys have held the spotlight at the big festivals in Ottawa, Chicago, and Portland. Here, Kaz plays his tenor sax and harmonica, and steps up to sing. John blows his swinging bari sax and Al wields his trusty trumpet. Whether it’s bringing new life to gems like “Caldonia” or “People Get Ready”or introducing their own material (listen to “Soul Stroll” or “Kick Me Again” or “Blues Gotta Hold on Me”) these guys know how to play, romping, stomping and updating that great horn sound from the 40s and 50s. The rhythm section boasts Austin blues maestros Barry “Frosty” Smith (drums) and Derek O’Brien (guitar), and the special guest stars include Marcia Ball, W.C. Clark, Nick Conolly, Anson Funderburg, Roscoe Beck and Johnny Nicholas.

Pat Boyack - 2 albums: On The Prowl / Voices From The Street

Like so many guitarists of his generation, Pat Boyack traced his initial fascination with the blues back to his early admiration of Stevie Ray Vaughan. Born June 26, 1967 in Helper, Utah, Boyack's tastes as a teen originally ran more along the lines of Van Halen and Kiss, but soon he became so immersed in the contemporary Texas blues sound that he eventually relocated to Dallas to pursue a musical career of his own. In 1993, he relocated to the Phoenix area, where he formed the bar band Rocket 88s with vocalist/harpist Jimmy Morello; after the group dissolved, Boyack returned to Dallas, where he eventually formed the blues-rock unit the Prowlers with bassist John Garza and drummer Doug Swancy. After issuing their debut effort Armed and Dangerous in 1993, the Prowlers welcomed Morello into their ranks, and Breakin' In followed in late 1994. After 1996's On the Prowl, the band fell apart, and Boyack assembled a new supporting cast for his 1997 solo debut, Super Blue and Funky. ~bio by Jason Ankeny
