This is a dynamite live show from the Tombs House Of Detention in New York City in the 1980s, when Paul Oscher often brought a full all-star blues revue into clubs and theaters. On this particular recording Paul is at the top of his game on harp and guitar, with New York legendary pianist/vocalist Bob Gaddy and blues singer Rose Melody revving up the crowd as guest vocalists.

Otis Spann disciple David Maxwell plays piano throughout and takes center stage for two incendiary tracks. Rounding out the driving rhythm section are blues veterans Candy McDonald on drums and Steve Gomes on bass. Guitarist, singer, songwriter, pianist and harp player Paul Oscher has paid his dues, and then some. Those who have been following blues for a long time will remember Oscher from the late 1960s as the white kid who played harmonica in the Muddy Waters Band.

Blues caught the Brooklyn-raised Oscher's ears at age 12 and he began playing professionally at age 15, frequenting clubs like the Baby Grand, the 521 Club and the Seville Lounge. Oscher also made frequent trips to the Apollo Theater in the mid-1960s. On one trip, he met guitarist Muddy Waters, and a friendship between the two developed. Several years later, Waters' band was in New York and they needed a harmonica player; Oscher got the nod. Oscher joined Waters on stage for two numbers, "Baby Please Don't Go" and "Blow Wind Blow." Waters hired him. As a full member of Waters' band, he had the chance to rub shoulders with greats like Otis Spann, Sammy Lawhorn and S.P. Leary. Oscher, the only white member of the band, performed with Waters through tours of the U.S., Europe and Canada. He also recorded with Waters' band at the Chess Studios in Chicago.

As one who was there at the height of the late 1960s blues renaissance, Oscher's harmonica playing influenced lots of other players who came to prominence after him. His sessionography is extensive, including albums with Johnny Copeland, Muddy Waters, Otis Spann, Luther Johnson and Johnny Young.

Oscher's veteran skills on guitar and harmonica are showcased on his debut for the New York-based Vice Roots Records, a division of Viceroy Music. Oscher's Knockin' On the Devil's Door, a 1996 release, brought his music before a bigger audience. Provided he can back it up with the kind of touring required to support independent records, Oscher should find himself in demand again on the festival/club circuit around the U.S. and Europe. Oscher's debut for Viceroots was produced by a longtime admirer, Dave Peverett, from the blues-rock quartet Foghat. ~ Richard Skelly

After years of being a sideman and gigging without recorded, Paul Oscher -- a former harpist for Muddy Waters -- made his first album, Knockin' on the Devil's Door, in 1996. Oscher stays true to his Chicago blues roots, but he wisely doesn't run through the same old standards again. Instead, he's written a set of impassioned originals, augmented by a couple of appropriate covers. Working with a talented supporting group -- featuring harpist Steve Guyger, bassist Mudcat Ward, pianist David Maxwell and drummer Big Eyes Smith -- Oscher devotes himself to guitar, showing a flair for gritty riffs and solos. Living Legends is the result of a longstanding desire to record a true50/50 collaboration between these two blues luminaries; Paul Oscher & Steve Guyger. Mention Paul Oscher's name and you instinctively think of Muddy Waters. For five years Paul played with and watched Waters and Spann like a hawk from his matchless vantage point on stage. No one on the blues scene today can touch him as a multi-instrumentalist given his massive harmonica tone his ability to summon Muddy's spirit in his slide guitar playingor his prodigious piano technique.

Steve Guyger has devoted two decades to preserving classic blues tradition. He worked with Jimmy Rogers from 1980 to 1994. Paul and Steve are a link to the for fathers of modern blues bridging the past and present. They've made their sacrifices and paid their dues to remain true to this Art Form.

Blues singer/multi-instrumentalist/songwriter Paul Oscher's Down in the Delta was recorded live "the old-school way" -with no overdubs- and features Oscher on vocals, harmonica, guitar, piano and melodica with special guests including Levon Helm (drums), Willie "Big Eyes" Smith (drums), Calvin Jones (bass) and David Maxwell (piano). Down in the Delta captures the no-frills, down-in-the-alley, gutbucket, lowdown and lonesome deep blues of Oscher's live performances.

Paul Oscher first came to national attention as Muddy Waters' harmonica player from 1967-1972 (following in the footsteps of Little Walter, Junior Wells, James Cotton and Big Walter Horton). The first white musician to become a full-time member of a world-class black blues band, Muddy treated Oscher like a son. Oscher shared the basement in Muddy's southside Chicago home with the great Otis Spann. Working alongside Muddy Waters, Otis Spann, Sammy Lawhorn, Pee Wee Madison and S.P. Leary, Oscher learned deep Blues phrasing and timing. He learned to play slide guitar from Muddy -literally by looking over Muddy's shoulder- and piano from Otis Spann.

In certain genres, the live album is a perilous affair, fraught with the danger that the live performance will fail to match the more polished magic of the studio. With certain genres like the blues, however, the immediacy of the live performance is frequently the desired result, even in the studio. House Rockin' and Blues Shoutin' captures the live performances of a handful of bands, singers, and musicians delving deep into electric blues at the Rhythm Room in Phoenix. The standards of the genre are on full display in this collection, from soulful singing to electric guitar and harp work to tried and true lyrics about hard-living and no-good women. Featured performers include the Fabulous Thunderbirds, the Mannish Boys, Long John Hunter, Floyd Dixon, Big Pete Pearson, Henry Gray, Sonny Rhodes, Paul Oscher, Chief Schabutti Gilliame, Robert Lockwood, Jr., Louisiana Red, and Billy Boy Arnold. While full bands and vocals constitute most of the arrangements, solo performances, including "Long John's Country Blues" by Hunter and "C.C. Rider" by Lockwood, offer welcome variety. There's also the occasional instrumental, including a spry version of "Henry's Houserocker" by Gray. One might wish for the presence of one or two female performers, but with all of the testosterone floating around in these songs, they probably steered clear of the Rhythm Room. Paul Oscher is an alumnus of the Muddy Waters band, where he played harmonica in the late '60s, and developed his talent on guitar from watching Muddy himself, and his piano style from the late Otis Spann. This fourth solo outing is a mishmash of sessions -- one of which, his take on "That's Alright," was recorded on cassette in a Brooklyn boarding house. But it hangs together surprisingly well, since Oscher is very much an old-school bluesman. He can delve into the past for obscurities, such as his cover of Big Joe Turner's "Juke Joint," and juggle a variety of different harmonicas on the title cut for a wonderful effect that demonstrates -- in an understated way -- his virtuosity. But he can also create a great atmosphere on accordion, and proves it on "Louis Collins," while "Blues Before Sunrise" shows that he learned very well how to play piano, its dark colors showing in the aching vocal and stark fingerwork. Nor does he ignore the guitar, giving "Anna Lee" a raw slide workout that's packed with passion. Whatever he does, it seems, Oscher is a master, and this is blues well worth hearing. ~Review by Chris Nickson
