This compilation gleefully rummages through the 1940s and 50s with such joy that both aficionados and those who wouldn't know boogie-woogie from rockabilly should be equally entertained. The high number of novelties - notably Louis Jordan's School Days and the Western Melody Makers' Who Put the Turtle in Myrtle's Girdle - heightens the impression that the trio were rocking to this stuff in the cot. But that innocence is balanced by rude sauce and sass: Rufus Thomas's Bear Cat, a hiss-spit riposte to Hound Dog, or the Swallows' It Ain't the Meat, a glorious celebration of the female body, whatever its shape. The siblings' own cover of a 1940s song, called Ooo Wee, is so authentic that only the demotic London accent gives its modernity away.

This single CD features Louis Jordan & His Tympany 5 in 29 mostly concise performances that they recorded during 1940-1946 for World Broadcasting Transcriptions. These noncommercial performances, some of which are brief instrumentals and quite a few of which are songs that Jordan never recorded for his regular records, are quite enjoyable.

The music falls between swing and early R&B, and really shows off Jordan's vocals and alto sax playing well. Unfortunately, the personnel is unidentified, but Jordan tended to be most of the show anyway. Louis Jordan fans will want these formerly rare performances. /Scott Yanow, AllMusic

When Louis Jordan hitched up with Mercury for a brief stint in 1956 and 1957, his commercial fortunes were way in decline. The strategy hit upon as an attempt to revive his recording career was not one bound to find favor with critics when his catalog was reassessed in the decades to come. On Mercury, he'd concentrate on re-recording his jump blues classics, modernizing the arrangements somewhat with an eye for the then-exploding rock & roll market.

This 28-track compilation has much of what he recorded for the label, taken from two LPs and various singles. As Dave Penny's sympathetic liner notes point out, it wasn't as crass an approach at the time as it might seem from a distance; the long-playing market had just emerged, and since Jordan's original hit singles were no longer in print, for a while this was the only way to hear Louis do these tunes on record at all. Now that those classic original jump blues versions are ready available, of course, these remakes can't help but seem not only less essential, but inessential.

Inessential, however, doesn't mean that these were bad recordings by any means, even if no one should acquire these before getting the original versions. Jordan's performances were nothing if not professional and lively; the backing players were talented, including quite a few sides with Mickey Baker on guitar and Quincy Jones as musical director; and he did sprinkle some tunes into the sessions that weren't remakes of familiar old hits (though listeners should be aware that one of these tracks features Dottie Smith on vocals rather than Jordan himself).

Still, those remakes of familiar old hits like "Saturday Night Fish Fry" and "Caldonia" couldn't compete with the prototypes, and Baker didn't let loose on guitar as much as he could have, though he'll occasionally burn it up, especially on "Caldonia." If this was all that survived of Jordan as a recording artist, the material would be viewed more kindly, since his considerable abilities as a jump bluesman and R&B singer are well in evidence, and he wasn't all that bad even when the arrangements kowtowed to rock & roll trends. But viewed within the context of his entire discography, this has to be considered a lower-priority item, and one mostly for devoted Jordan fans. /Richie Unterberger, AllMusic

Louis Jordan - Jivin' With Jordan (4 CD Set)

Effervescent saxophonist Louis Jordan was one of the chief architects and prime progenitors of the R&B idiom. His pioneering use of jumping shuffle rhythms in a small combo context was copied far and wide during the 1940s.

Jordan's sensational hit-laden run with Decca Records contained a raft of seminal performances, featuring inevitably infectious backing by his band, the Tympany Five, and Jordan's own searing alto sax and street corner jive-loaded sense of humor. Jordan was one of the first black entertainers to sell appreciably in the pop sector; his Decca duet mates included Bing Crosby, Louis Armstrong, and Ella Fitzgerald. /Excerpt from biography by Bill Dahl, AllMusic

This whopping 102-cut, four-disc box collects the vast majority of master takes Louis Jordan & His Tympany Five recorded for Decca in the 1940s. While it's true that Germany's Bear Family label did a better job by putting together a seven-disc box with alternates and a number of unreleased masters along with an LP of his duets with Ella Fitzgerald, this collection cannot be faulted, especially for the price especially since it also represents Jordan's music from the late '30s to the early '50s.

One can hear the grand lyric phrasing and rhythmic influence Jordan had on Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Johnny Otis, and Otis Blackwell. From "Five Guys Named Moe," "That Chick's Too Young to Fry," and "Somebody Done Changed the Lock on My Door" to "If You're So Smart How Come You Ain't Rich," "Fat Sam from Birmingham," "Baby It's Cold Outside" (with Ella), and many many more, there isn't a weak take on this set. /Thom Jurek, AllMusic

This opening volume of an ongoing series comes up with 28 terrific performances illustrating that the corporate giant at least had their pulse on what actually constituted rhythm & blues in the early 1950s, and then some. From the out-and-out wildness of Mr. Bear and the Bearcats' "Mr. Bear Comes to Town," Big Al Sears' "Great Googa Mooga," Milt Trenier's "Day Old Bread" and the Jackson Brothers' "There's No Other Way," this collection also plumbs some deep blues with the unissued Larry Dale tracks "Midnight Hours," "Please Tell Me" and "Down to the Bottom," all three featuring some stellar guitar work from Mickey Baker. Louis Thomas Jordan (July 8, 1908 - February 4, 1975) was a pioneering American jazz, blues and rhythm & blues musician, songwriter and bandleader who enjoyed his greatest popularity from the late 1930s to the early 1950s. Known as "The King of the Jukebox", Jordan was highly popular with both black and white audiences in the later years of the swing era. In 2004, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked him #59 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. Overview, Louis Jordan was one of the most successful African-American musicians of the 20th century, ranking fifth in the list of the all-time most successful black recording artists according to Billboard magazine's chart methodology. Though comprehensive sales figures are not available, he scored at least four million-selling hits during his career.

Jordan regularly topped the R&B "race" charts, and was one of the first black recording artists to achieve a significant "crossover" in popularity into the mainstream (predominantly white) American audience, scoring simultaneous Top Ten hits on the white pop charts on several occasions. After Duke Ellington and Count Basie, Louis Jordan was probably the most popular and successful African-American bandleader of his day.
