The Goldband label is most known for the Cajun artists it recorded, such as Iry LeJeune and Cleveland Crochet, but it also put out releases by numerous blues musicians. These included some pretty respected, if secondary, blues notables like Lazy Lester, Lonesome Sundown, Juke Boy Bonner, Hop Wilson, and Katie Webster. They, and several much less familiar names, can be heard on this 26-song compilation of Goldband blues sides, mostly done in the 1950s and 1960s. The blues records done during this era at Jay Miller's studio in Crowley, LA. (by Slim Harpo especially) are justly more famous than the Goldband blues sides as far as Louisiana blues goes. But there was a different sound to the Goldband blues stable, although its studios were located just 50 miles to the west, particularly in the overlap with Texas blues, as Goldband's Lake Charles headquarters were close to the Texas border. There was also some spillover from zydeco and Cajun music, as Clarence Garlow, Thaddus Declouet, and Rockin' Sidney -- all represented on this anthology -- did some R&B and blues sides for Goldband, although they are principally zydeco artists. Cookie & the Cupcakes, who also have a track, are thought of more as a swamp-pop group than as a blues one. Most of this, however, is neither swamp pop nor zydeco-influenced, but fair though not wondrous electric blues/R&B of various shades, not too refined but not always that swampy either. Jimmy Wilson's "Trouble in My Home," for instance, sounds a little like the minor-keyed anguished blues of early Otis Rush, though he lacks Rush's superb guitar and vocal skills. The CD is worth investigating for those who are heavily into Louisiana R&B of the 1950s and 1960s, and on the lookout for some variations from the usual regional stew that aren't so well known. ~Richie Unterberger

Greg Copeland's new album is called "Brown-Eyed Handsome Man" and he has come up with something special. He got the support of The Goosebumps Brothers. Goosebump Brothers? Yep, these are the guys of Big Daddy Wilson, who is of course also involved in the song "People get ready". In detail are the Cesare Nolli on the guitars, Paolo Legramandi on the bass, Nik Taccori on drums. Also Maurizio "Gnola" Glielmo with background vocals. The album comes in the cardboard cover with a little accompanying text about the Why and Why. There are 11 songs, including three cover versions "People get ready", "I gotcha" and the great version of "Working in a coal mine". All other songs are written by the musicians involved and by Martin Messing.

The album starts with "Brown-eyed handsome man", a saying that an old woman made at birth when she saw his big brown eyes. Nomen est omen and all women were happy. The number starts bluesy with an acoustic guitar followed by a pulsatingly tremolo lead guitar - pulsating like the life of the "Brown-eyed hansome man". It follows "Hip to you", funky with reggae elements but still blues, because she leaves him after 23 years. Real social background is provided by "Alcohol Abuse", a stomping rhythm around the subject of drug abuse. In a world that still sings Moonshine, this is a commendable textual approach to addressing important social issues. Again purely acoustically with folk or country elements it continues with "A girl like you". Dream thinking of the lonely musician.

Albums that do not strictly follow a musical direction and yet are tied to the 12-stroke promise variety in blues and good listener mood. The variety brings songs like "I gotcha". Here the soul flashes through. The number is from Joe Tex. The lover tests his Holde for infidelity - Caught! Heavy blues follows in "Oh no". Greg's voice soft and plaintive, because the beloved does not give a shit about whether he feels well or ill when she comes and goes whenever she wants. There it would be again - The eternal theme of the blues energetically accompanied by the guitar playing of Cesare Noli. Another song in the series "Variation" is the song "People get ready", in which Big Daddy Wilson has a significant part. The song with gospel elements sings of gentle upheaval in American society - just jump on the train of peace and join in. Allen Toussaint's number "Working in Cole Mine" is witty, especially when the Goosebrothers give their "oops" in the refrain. "Talking, bout the South" is a reminiscence of the culturally diverse "Dirty South" of the USA, where Greg Copeland grew up. Tucked away in the blues are little elements of hip-hop that can also be associated with the Dirty South. where Greg Copeland grew up. Tucked away in the blues are little elements of hip-hop that can also be associated with the Dirty South. where Greg Copeland grew up. Tucked away in the blues are little elements of hip-hop that can also be associated with the Dirty South.

With "Please, please" the acoustic blues returns. Each piece is, in principle, a journey through the genres that influenced blues over 80 years. At the beginning was the delta or country blues with simple guitar playing. In the course of the piece, the electric band is added and already makes the piece a leap in time of good 30-40 years. The rhythm remains simple and stoic, pushing the requests forward until the final chord gives the whole thing another positive outcome. Just as acoustically "This is love" begins. The Brown-eyed Handsome Man is very much in love and is sure that everything happens out of love. Again, a miraculous turn in the song, because now comes the suckersüsse Soul and Motown sends greetings. ~Mario BOLLINGER

Gracie Curran - Gracie Curran & Friends: Come Undone

06. If Mama Ain't Happy (Feat. Victor Wainwright & Damon Fowler) (2:27)
07. Love Is The Cruelest Thing I Know (6:17)
08. Chasing Sunsets (3:01)

Gracie Curran‘s voice is reminiscent of Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes. There’s similar power and emotional directness, which makes Come Undone, her second album, such an enjoyable journey.

Come Undone is all about Curran’s voice, which has a bluesy rasp but a pure-rock energy. It’s the first thing you notice on every track and it’s at the center of every song. Curran’s supporting band does a great job of laying down the music, but everything is in service to Curran’s vocals. Which is a wise move.

The title track is a slow burn, a la Alabama Shakes. The music quietly simmers while Curran boils, pushing back against horns and drums. Her voice covers the track, like a pot lid, just to keep the analogy going a little longer, not stifling the energy of the track, but creating a tension that makes the song hotter. Sure, the track moves into an odd reggae break, but when you have pipes like Curran, you can make reggae detours. People get it.

While that song has a contemporary vibe, Curran also has some very nice, older-school blues and soul numbers on the album. “Stay Up” is also horn-driven, this time in more of a blues jazz vein. Here, Curran’s singing is percussive, the staccato performance almost making the track’s drums unnecessary. But Curran manages inject her vocals with tone and melody, so it’s not like she’s rapping, so much as she’s using her voice like a drum kit.

“If Mama Ain’t Happy” also has a 1950s sound. Curran’s band here is relatively stripped down, with some Jerry Lee Lewis-approved piano framing out the song, and some vintage guitar soloing providing period-authentic color. But Curran’s voice centers the tune, once again practically acting as her own rhythm section.

Which isn’t to say that Curran is all about the power. There are quieter tracks, although Curran’s voice just doesn’t seem wired for anything but intensity. She never bulldozes her way through a song, and she’s capable of finesse, but the performances are never delicate. “Love is the Cruelest” is a soulful love song, built upon some sparse guitar, and while Curran is tapping into a serious emotional space, her voice still shines, like a spotlight that can’t be dimmed.

It would be insulting to say Curran could make anything sound good. The songs on Come Undone are all well-written. Her band is also impressive. Everyone stays out of Curran’s way, yet the performances are all interesting. They’re supportive but not demure, and that’s a hard tightrope to walk. So while Curran could rest on the laurels of her vocal gift, she doesn’t. There’s a lot of thought and deliberateness in every aspect of Come Undone. But it certainly helps that Curran is starting from such a talented position. ~Steven Ovadia

Cirkus Prütz take us from their Swedish home without detours to a hot, dim bar in Texas. You hear the first bars and it would not be surprising if at any moment Stevie Ray Vaughan and Billy Gibbons came in the door to join jamming with the band.
The 10 songs on "White Jazz - Black Magic" tell stories we have all encountered. About hopes, dreams and "life" itself. Presented in the seething sound of the South, between Swamp, Blues, Zydeco and honest rock. In addition, with the instrumental "Blues For Fallen Brothers" the four musicians created an emotional memory of their two former guitarists Robert "Strängen" Dahlquist and Mikael "Fässe" Fässberg, who unfortunately are no longer with us.

Shaun Murphy (born May 6, 1948) is an American blues and R&B singer songwriter, best known for her powerhouse singing style. Her recording career started in 1971 with Motown Records.

Murphy shared the stage with many Detroit-based bands, including Wilson Mower Pursuit and Jake Wade and the Soul Searchers, in venues such as Detroit's Grande Ballroom, as well as the first Ann Arbor Blues Festival in 1969, along with various large state fairground music venues. She was soon noticed by an employee of Motown in a touring theater production along with Texas native Meat Loaf. The two were signed by Rare Earth Records, a division of Motown Records, as Stoney and Meatloaf in 1971. That pairing was short-lived and became defunct, although they had previously also been fellow cast members of the Detroit production of Hair. Only Murphy was retained under contract after the breakup of the duo.

After a period of inactivity with the new division of Motown in Los Angeles, she left Motown and contacted Detroit music producer Punch Andrews for possible opportunities. Murphy then relocated back to Detroit in 1973 to work with Bob Seger. She has continued to work with Seger in the studio since 1973, in addition to performing on all of his tours since 1978.

She returned again to live in Los Angeles in 1985 while working with Eric Clapton on his Behind the Sun album. Murphy joined Clapton's band for the ensuing tour, which included Live Aid.

Murphy's career in vocals has been both as band lead singer and session singer. She has sung, toured, and recorded with such acts as the Moody Blues, Bob Seger, Herbie Hancock, Phil Collins, Glenn Frey, Joe Walsh, Maria Muldaur, Bruce Hornsby, Michael Bolton, Coco Montoya, Alice Cooper, Little Feat and rock musicals, Hair and Sgt. Pepper's, etc.

In 1993, she became a full-time member of the Los Angeles-based band Little Feat. She stayed on for the next fifteen years, recording and touring with them until 2009.[1]

In September 2009 the Shaun Murphy Band released the album Livin' The Blues. A second album, The Trouble With Lovin', followed in 2010. Late in 2011, Murphy released a DVD and live album both titled Shaun Murphy Live at Callahan's, recorded at Callahan's Music Hall, Auburn Hills, Michigan.

Her album Ask for the Moon, released in 2012, was nominated for three Grammy Awards and won two Blues Blast music awards. She released Cry Of Love in 2013. Loretta was released in February 2015. Mighty Gates was released in October 2017 on Vision Wall Records.

Blues for hard working people/
My music education started at age 8 playing drums and soon played in rock and roll bands through elementary and high school. I picked up guitar at age 14 and music became my primary focus from that point forward. Since then I picked up bass and keyboards as well. I have spent many hours over the years learning digital recording, engineering and producing. All the tracks are done at my studio After MidNite Music, I play all instruments/vocals on the tracks, and have written, arranged and produced all the songs. My songwriting is what I feel at the moment, hard to put it in a class, I guess Blues/Rock if you must. Music is my life and I am grateful that I can be a one man band in the studio. Although it is a tuff role to fill, I perform as a solo acoustic artist as you can see by my videos just can’t seem to get that out of my system, and there’s something about playing live for a songwriter you just can’t live without.

Bastion Highwalk's blend of Faces and Stonesy swagger, Delta Blues, and Outlaw Country returns with the new album, full of guitar riffs and twang with his 'gypsy rogue' lyricism and whiskey soaked vocals.

Black King Crow owes as much to Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard as it does to Rod Stewart and the Rolling Stones. Called 'the master of the drinking song', Bastion Highwalk's romantic pictures of loneliness, disdain and drunkenness are on full display to a backdrop of fuzzed out twanging guitars, empty bars and highways. You can almost see the neon lights and hear the clank of empty bottles in his 'roguish charm' and gravelly vocals. If you're a fan of the Stones, Izzy Stradlin, Tyla, Outlaw Country and Blues rock with southern influences, this is for you.

To understand Bill Toms and Hard Rain (featuring The Soulville Horns), you must appreciate the long tradition of American ‘rock and roll’, ‘blues’, and ’soul’.

After the release of the 2017 “Good For My Soul" record, it was necessary to capture this band live, with this lineup. Their strength lies in it's ability to move an audience. This is a performance band. To carry that Rhythm and Blues, age old custom of moving from town to town, leaving its audience exhausted, both physically and emotionally. To understand Bill Toms and Hard Rain (featuring The Soulville Horns), you must appreciate the long tradition of American ‘rock and roll’, ‘blues’, and ’soul’. With the air of a gospel poet, Bill Toms writes of characters fighting to stay one step ahead of the devil (“I’m Sad No More”). One step ahead of the bill collector (“Workin”). One step ahead of the law (“Into The Storm”,“Ballad of Jimmy Jones”). And of course, one step ahead of the jealous husband (“Won’t Go To Memphis No More”). ThIs is their 'Americana'. Where the best music was always found in the blues bars, juke joints, and dives. The wrong side of the tracks! (“Darkest Side Of Town”). This recorded concert will stir the soul, break your heart, and have you shakin’ a tail-feather. And don’t that feel good?

Anthony Mills’ album 'blue collar work ethic is a collection of stories that are a homage to Mill’s Louisiana heritage and factory-town upbringing. These are working songs, chronicling states of mind from the Deep South all the way to the Rubber City (aka Akron, Ohio.)

With a background in hip-hop and production, Anthony was persuaded forget these styles to try singing in the style of his homeland by producer David Belafonte. When Anthony realised that this was fundamentally a storytelling genre, he knew it was the right approach for his songs. Mills found laying out his family’s history liberating, while at times bringing him to tears in the studio.

Mills is a great grandchild of the industrial revolution, his family migrating from Lake Charles, Louisiana to Akron, laying roots in Flint and Detroit, Michigan along the way. Mills feels that the factory spirit is in his genes, along with the voodoo of his French-Creole Grandma Mills-Anglenais. He tells his family’s story with elements of Americana, Blues and old plantation songs to express the blue-collar inertia that runs through his veins.

On his 1988 solo effort Talk to Your Daughter, singer/guitarist Robben Ford proves himself a master of sophisticated blues-rock guitar playing. The material is quite strong, and all the musicians perform at the highest level, but it's Ford's stellar soloing that makes this release. Fans of flailing '80s rock virtuosos would do well to check out Ford's exceptional work on Talk to Your Daughter. The musician's colorful yet controlled improvising and harmonic mastery is a rare and beautiful sonic treat.

The title track is dripping with soulful, well-placed guitar lines that play like a master lesson of up-tempo blues phrasing that guitarists would do well to study. Other standouts include "Born Under a Bad Sign" and "Ain't Got Nothin' But the Blues."

The fine arrangements and especially Vinnie Colaiuta's sharp drumming are all tightly wound with crisp, clear production that tops off "Talk to Your Daughter," making it a shining success. Listeners fond of Ford's work with the Yellowjackets and numerous side gigs, as well as guitarists and all musicians, should enjoy this very professional, succinctly executed offering. Ellersoul Records is proud to reissue the great R&B recording, 'Essence' from 'Nashville's Queen of the Blues', the renowned singer/song writer Marion James. Born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee, Marion grew up in a family with a love for music. Like most great R&B singers, Marion's musical background is firmly rooted in the church. Her first experience with blues music came from watching vaudeville shows, checking out local performers and listening to her mother's record collection of 78s.

In 1966, she recorded the top-ten hit "That's My Man" for Nashville's legendary Excello Records. The track featured legendary blues guitarist, Johnny Jones (Bobby Blue Bland) and Marion's husband, trumpeter/arranger Jimmy Stuart. Stuart also arranged horn charts for such notable artists as Junior Parker and Bobby Blue Bland. During the early 1960's, Marion's touring band included guitarist, Jimi Hendrix, and bassist, Billy Cox. Their live performances electrified audiences throughout the South. Marion continued performing till the mid 1980s when she decided to take a long overdue break from the road.

In the early 90s, Marion met guitarist Casey Lutton. She began to perform with his group, The Hypnotics. Several years later, she and this funky outfit recorded an album for the Italian label, Appaloosa Records. Since then, Marion has shared the stage with Rufus Thomas, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Chick Willis, and many others! She's played to sold-out audiences in Europe and the Southeastern United States. Marion was also part of a exhibition at the Country Music Hall of Fame, "Night Train to Nashville: Music City Rhythm & Blues 1945-1970". It covered the rich and vibrant R&B music history of Nashville.

Essence, is an intoxicating blend of blues, soul, and jazz and features some of Nashville's finest musicians. Legendary jazz pianist, Beegie Adair, and her trio accompany Marion on six of the twelve songs. Adair's restraint and poise perfectly complement James unique vocal styling. Marion's vocal style is reminiscent of her influences such as Billie Holiday, Ruth Brown, and Etta James. The remaining tracks find Marion in an electric soul blues setting.

Musicians like keyboardist Reese Wynans (Double Trouble), guitarist Jack Pearson (The Allman Brothers), bassist Bob Babbitt (Motown session musician), and drummer Chucki Burke (Willie Dixon, Issac Hayes) drive the point home with music that'll make you jump out of your seat! From the greasy funk of "Tables" to the silky groove of "Let's Straighten It Out", Marion commands each track with the profound conviction that only a veteran can convey.

B.B. & The Blues Shacks, the Hildesheim cult formation around the brothers Michael and Andreas Aarlt, are one of the most successful active blues bands in this country with several thousand live gigs and numerous releases on the credit side.

Already in 2015 they released their debut album of the same name as Bonita & The Blues Shacks with Bonita Niessen, a singer from Cape Town. The combination of the experienced blues quintet and the pop and soul singer with many years of TV experience turned out to be a wonderful self-propagator, after Bonita had already enthused on previous recordings and live appearances of the band by guest appearances.

With the brilliance of the great ladies of blues like Ann Peebles, Etta James or Lula Reed her variable and glamorous voice fits perfectly to the BB's, who like to move in the nuances of blues styles up to soul anyway, as well as to the 16 brand new songs on "Sweet Thing", ten well chosen and eloquently interpreted genre classics plus six perfectly fitting original compositions.

And of course BB's singer Michael Arlt is also on the harp and as duet partner on the microphone. Every song sits here and the album is thoroughly gripping, danceable and enormously varied.

There's this young guitar player singer from South Carolina named Marcus King, who is starting to stir up quite a bit of dust, and I think the potential for his music is endless..." - Warren Haynes (Gov't Mule, The Allman Brothers, The Dead) to Rolling Stone Magazine, July 2015.

Call him the next Duane Allman or Derek Trucks, but whatever you do, don't call Marcus King a child prodigy. Sure, the 19 year old guitar shredder's talent shimmers with the same resonance as his heroes, but he's been wielding an axe since he learned to talk - he started playing when he was two, and got his first guitar (a Squier Strat) at age seven, landing his first paying gig a year later.

Now virtual road-warriors, Marcus and the band have toured throughout the south and southeast, developing a fervent fan base and honing their craft, their sound and spirit drawing significant influence from Allman and Haynes to Marvin Gay, Ray LaMontagne, Gary Clark Jr. and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

The band's Evil Teen debut SOUL INSIGHT is comprised of12 original tunes including three instrumentals, showcasing a literal lifetime of virtuosity and love for soul, blues, Southern rock and a great jam.

Round four years have passed since the last regular release, Steam (disregard Live & Let Live of 2015 as a live album). In the process, several songs fell by the wayside on the road, simply knocked back into the bin when the album was actually finished. Then at some point the proverbial spark ignited and the band was packed in a room and someone pressed the record button (meaning quote).

The result is a very entertaining affair that will please the gentle friend of the Southern Rock / Blues Rock

Roots music visionary" (Rolling Stone) Delbert McClinton returns with a swaggering and swingin’ new album, Tall, Dark & Handsome. Featuring 14 new, original new songs - all written or co-written by Delbert - the album dives deep into the blues, Americana and beyond, bursting with horns, fiddle, accordion, blazing guitar work, back-up singers and McClinton’s charismatic rasp, proving Lyle Lovett’s claim that “if we could all sing like we want to, we’d all sound like Delbert McClinton.”

Tall, Dark & Handsome features Delbert’s band the Self-Made Men + Dana: Dana Robbins (saxophone), Jack Bruno (drums), Mike Joyce (bass), Bob Britt (guitar), James Pennebaker (guitar), Kevin McKendree (keyboards), Dennis Wage (keyboards). It’s evident from the first downbeat that McClinton and company had a blast making the record, shining a raucous light on the swinging, jazzy virtues of Texas blues. Opener “Mr. Smith” is a joyous shuffle. “If I Hock My Guitar” is sly and self-deprecating, the story of a down n’ out axe-man who weighs his craft with a visit to the pawn shop. The album hurtles forward with a red hot energy, with only a couple cool breaths along the way, like on “Any Other Way,” a ballad that starts with “Just another lovely day / a low-flying angel got in my way.”

In March of 2019 Mark Wilson & Raphael Slagg brought up the subject of getting together and recording things that they would sort of write together, more like Mark would get an idea and on Saturdays around 12 noon they would get together at Blind Fret Studios when life permitted.
LOL.. sometimes yes sometimes no mostly most of the Saturdays were made.
With both that love to play in a blues style yet, have different approaches and playing styles they decided this could be interesting and work out great or..well not so great. They would bang out these ideas together and the wonderful thing is there were no Ego's involved. They are still great friends and work famously together. So famously together that they will be starting the Second Wilson & Slagg album very soon.
Mark & Raphael hope you enjoy what you hear from these 3 to 4 hour Saturday Sessions. They worked really not to hard on these insanity sessions at trying to not really not take it so serious and just write, create, play and Record ! Hey, they know they are not pretty rock stars, just a couple of guitar players that love to play.
Please Enjoy, buy a few copies for friends as drinking social presents. You know they will drink and will steal and rip your copy anyway. Buying them one will show your friends you care.

11. Two Trains [3:59]
12. Shine On [3:49]

To her credit, Carolyn Wonderland makes no bones about the Janis Joplin comparisons that, somewhat accurately, describe her whiskey-soaked voice and tough blues/soul musical palette. In fact, this album's opening track is a relatively obscure Joplin cover of "What Good Can Drinkin' Do" that she delivers with requisite bad girl swagger. Well known for her exciting live show, Wonderland has had less success capturing that edge on album. But a combination of producers including Asleep at the Wheel's Ray Benson, Dylan sideman Larry Campbell, and even ex-Monkee Mike Nesmith successfully frame the Texas native's songs in a raw, rootsy, but professionally recorded environment that lets her vocals shine and gives her band room to kick out the jams on blues, R&B, New Orleans funk, swamp rock, and the righteous gospel that's at the heart of her multiple influences. The tracks are divided equally between covers and Wonderland originals, thereby displaying both her songwriting and interpretive chops. She can wail with the best of them, but it's her control on tunes such as "Usurper," with its thumping drums, and the closing acoustic country of "Shine On," the album's most reserved moment, that shows the restraint of a great singer. She brings churchy soul to her own "St. Marks," an easygoing midtempo rocker that sounds like an old soul cover, and tears it up on blues classics such as Elmore James' "Dust My Broom" and "Two Trains," applying the latter's words to the standard "You Don't Love Me" riff. She's obviously on fire performing straight-ahead blues, her band is rocking, and the arrangement balances her in-your-face blast with a far more subtle style. It's that ability to rein in her brassy bellow, especially on a fiery gospel take of Vince Welnick/Robert Hunter's "Golden Stairs" (a cool, under-the-radar find), that makes her such a formidable presence and provides this album the dynamics of style and mood that make it a diverse yet perfect example of what Wonderland does best.

6. Tikki Bar Is Open [16:13]
7. Hey Joe [17:06]

The CD starts with "Going Down" by Don Nix, goes straight to the top and surprises with a fade-in. Right in the middle of a dynamic drum and bass solo. But makes sense. Because as if by magic the listener is catapulted directly into the event. Fine trick!

"Going Down" is followed by BB King's "Every Day I Have The Blues", which is followed by the Hesse compositions "Make My Day" and "California". Track five "Too Much Soul" and track six "Tikki Bar Is Open" are joint compositions by Hagel & Hesse. Track seven "Hey Joe" has been attributed to Billy Roberts gematechnisch. Jimi Hendrix finally made him a classic with his interpretation.

Finally, a few comments on "Tikki Bar Is Open". An intense reminiscence of "Doors' Riders On The Storm". Here and there a small note changed - and already the airy post goes off. Martin Siehoff contributes a seven-minute drum solo that, with the help of Richard Hagel's Maracas, reaches from tender to dynamic heights.

This live performance on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the PeeWees has inspired me intensively and impressed me. I've heard this disc over ten times in total and it does not wear off. On the contrary! She made me addicted. Addicted to this live enjoyment. And Tom Redecker once again had a golden touch. This disc crowns the showcase of the PeeWees

In February 2016, Dion, one of the great original rockers, released a new album called New York Is My Home. For the title track, the doo-wop legend called in another fellow native New Yorker with an ear for harmony, Paul Simon.

The sparse song, the video of which can be viewed above, finds Dion celebrating the city, finding beauty even on rainy days and equating the noisy streets with gospel music. Simon comes in at the end of the first verse and stays throughout. He even takes the lead on the last two verses.

“We share a love for rock & roll street music the way it was done when we were kids,” Dion told Rolling Stone. “I knew Paul would get this song. And he did. Soon after I sent it to him, he called and said he’d become obsessed with it. He added his own distinct touches to the production. He’s from Queens; I’m from the Bronx. We’re both at home in New York. What a trip, a labor of love for us.”

The two have worked together a few times over the years. Simon sang on “Written on the Subway Wall/Little Star” for Dion’s 1989 major-label comeback, Yo Frankie, and they duetted on Dion’s classic “The Wanderer” at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 25th anniversary concert in 2009.

“Paul and I have been friends a long time,” Dion told Rolling Stone. “I was at his apartment back when there was a terrible downturn in the country and Paul wanted to do something special for the city. Well, he put together that wonderful concert in Central Park. He thought the city needed a touch of friendship. I thought it was off the Richter scale doing something for our city. When I wrote ‘New York Is My Home,’ I thought this is a way to have New Yorkers fall in love with their city all over again.”

"Authentic Excello R&B" marks the official launch of Ace's reissue of one of the great untouched labels from the Golden Blues Era of the 1950s and 1960s - Excello Records.

It seems entirely approriate to base this collection on the classic UK Stateside LP, "Authentic R&B" (SL 10068), which had such a vital influence on the British R&B boom in 1963. Aficionados will note that the first 16 titles of this CD comromise that vinyl album, although we have used the original unissued 1957 version of Lazy Lester's "I'm A Lover Not A Fighter" instead of the 1958 45 rpm issue. The final eight titles of this CD give a further taster of the Excello riches that have rested dormant in the vaults for years.

The Excello label was launched in August 1952 as an offshoot to the Nashboro label by Ernie Young in Nashville, Tennesee. With Nashboro as the valuable gospel outlet, Excello was primarily a blues and R&B label, although in the early days there was also a sprinkling of gospel and white country music as well as rockabilly. In its latter years Excello was also an outlet for prime 60s Southern soul. /Excerpt from the liner notes by John Broven

Although Cherry Poppin' Daddies became a popular act during the swing revival of the late 1990s, the eight-piece band formed one decade prior in Eugene, Oregon. Vocalist Steve Perry (aka MC Large Drink, a nickname intended to distance Perry from the famous Journey frontman) and bassist Dan Schmid initially crossed paths at the University of Oregon, and a shared interest in punk music convinced the students to leave school and pursue a band.

After playing together in the Jazz Greats and St. Huck, the duo shifted gears in 1989 by forming Cherry Poppin' Daddies, a unique band whose lineup gradually encompassed guitarist Jason Moss, drummer Tim Donahue, trumpeter Dana Heitman, saxophonists Sean Flannery and Ian Early, and keyboard player Dustin Lanker.

The musicians' dedication to ska, swing, jazz, and jump blues made them oddities in the Northwest, where grunge had already begun its reign. Nonetheless, Cherry Poppin' Daddies enjoyed a brief surge of success several years later, when the popularity of "Zoot Suit Riot" helped launch a nationwide swing music revival. /Excerpt from biography by John Bush, AllMusic

This British blues-rock group is remembered mostly for their keyboard player, Christine Perfect, who would join Fleetwood Mac after marrying John McVie and changing her last name. Although they were one of the more pedestrian acts of the British blues boom, Chicken Shack was quite popular for a time in the late '60s, placing two albums in the British Top 20. The frontperson of Chicken was not Perfect/McVie, but guitarist Stan Webb, who would excite British audiences by entering the crowds at performances, courtesy of his 100-meter-long guitar lead. They were signed to Mike Vernon's Blue Horizon label, a British blues pillar that had its biggest success with early Fleetwood Mac.

Chicken Shack was actually not far behind Mac in popularity in the late '60s, purveying a more traditional brand of Chicago blues, heavily influenced by Freddie King. Although Webb took most of the songwriting and vocal duties, Christine Perfect also chipped in with occasional compositions and lead singing. In fact, she sang lead on their only British Top 20 single, "I'd Rather Go Blind" (1969). But around that time, she quit the music business to marry John McVie and become a housewife, although, as the world knows, that didn't last too long. Chicken Shack never recovered from Christine's loss, commercially or musically. Stan Webb kept Chicken Shack going, with a revolving door of other musicians, all the way into the 1980s, though he briefly disbanded the group to join Savoy Brown for a while in the mid-'70s. /Biography by Richie Unterberger, AllMusic

This release, Grand Union, is Grand’s first album since signing with the new Blues label. Recorded in Boston, USA. It is produced by Otis, who is also renowned for his High-value production work on Blues recordings. In Grand Union, Otis Grand has created a powerful guitar recording by inviting his long time friends Anson Funderburgh and Debbie Davies to participate in a TRIOLOGY style CD concept. The album also features the finest musicians from the USA, and includes special guests Sugar Ray Norcia, Tony Coleman and the BB King Horn section, and rare appearance by legendary R&B star Ike Turner on 2 tunes.

Grand Union reflects Otis Grand’s new approach to his latest recording in that he did not want this to be just another Otis Grand release (9 CD’s to date). Since he was invited to participate on the highly acclaimed "Great Guitars" recording by Joe Louis Walker, Otis has been consumed by expanding the project to a totally live guitar recording with his partners in the studio playing together at the same time . "All our playing is first take. It’s got that spontaneous feeling of the moment that is really the magic of playing the blues."

It was planned well in advance. Otis grand began calling musicians and assembling a common ground of songs that all guitarists felt comfortable with. These songs combine a dynamic mixture of Blues, southern soul, rocking R&B and big band influences. Whether Otis is bending, Anson is caressing or Debbie is burning every note from their guitars, the result is an innovative and fresh addition to blues. Grand / Funderburgh / Davies are so good on this release it’s scary, making this another veritable blues guitar ‘ear-gasm’ that will please all audiences across the musical divides.

Larry Griffith Project - Bonafide

06. Slow Grind (6:23)
07. Had Enough (5:14)
08. I'm Free (5:03)
09. Mama Tried (4:48)

Larry Griffith has been based in Atlanta since 1990 and has produced a series of albums and EPs over the years. His latest Bonafide reflects a turbulent time in his personal life, a break-up and throat surgery. Larry wrote all the songs here and leads from the front on vocals and guitar, with Barry Richman (guitar), Rashaan Griffith (drums, keys), Dana McCarthy (bass), Michael Milsap (keys), Tom Regeski (sax) and Little Joey Hoegger (harmonica). 2Blu (Teresa Lynn and Deborah Carr) are on backing vocals and George Price (guitar), Ray Tanner (trumpet) and Steven Milsap (drums) appear on one track.

The album opens with the swampy “Hoodoo Hannah”, the jungle beat and harmonica fitting well with the theme. Larry has a good voice and it all works fine, but simply goes on too long, the track running close to eight minutes with lots of repetition. Indeed, brevity is not Larry’s thing as several tracks follow a similar pattern and would have been much better if shortened, “I Know” being another example (mind you, with a lyric like “I know that you know that I know” it is hard to vary things). One of the strongest tracks is “It Ain’t What They Call You” which encourages us to ignore name-calling and concentrate on doing the right thing, with excellent backing vocals from 2Blu, soulful sax and a nice guitar break. “Slow Grind” has music in a similar soul vein but some pretty explicit lyrics in which Larry brags about his sexual abilities – definitely not one for mainstream radio!

The break-up songs dominate the album. “I Do, I Did, I’m Done” is quite a bitter song as Larry sees his marital promises receding into the past as he now realizes the marriage is over. “Always Going To Be Something With You” recounts the difficulties in Larry’s relationship, “Had Enough” is a slower number with lyrics about the break-up with another good horn and strings arrangement and “I’m Free” represents Larry’s sense of freedom after the break-up. The last track on the album “Mama Tried” pays tribute to Larry’s mother in raising her family in difficult circumstances.

Some of the songs could have benefited from a little judicious editing as they stayed around a bit too long.

With a good singing voice, original songs and a real handle on the soulful side of the blues, Larry Griffith has all the attributes needed to succeed. ~JOHN MITCHELL

11. You Treat My Love Like It's Roadkill (3:55)
12. Am I Wrong (5:23)
13. Red House (4:26)

If blues releases contained nutritional information on the backsides of their covers, the lowdown on We Do the Blues, from Bluesman Mike and the Blues Review Band, would read as follows: Serving Size, 1 Album; Servings Per CD, 13; Pure Blues, 5 Songs; Mostly Jazz, 8 Songs. Don’t get me wrong. It’s good jazz of the Delbert McClinton sort, not the Count Basie variety. Mike’s vocals are mellow and fluid, as any crooner’s should be, and his style is just as smooth. It’s a shame there isn’t more original material here, as “You Treat My Love Like it’s Roadkill” (yes, that’s the actual title) and “Am I Wrong” are above-average tunes in their own right. The rest are covers from some of the most popular blues artists of our time, such as Buddy Guy, Koko Taylor, Otis Redding and Coco Montoya. Whether or not one counts Jimi Hendrix (“Red House”) as a blues artist is a matter of one’s personal definition of the genre.

According to our leading man and his posse’s profile on Reverbnation, “The Blues Review Band was formed out of Bluesman Mike’s passion for the blues. In the year 2007, he decided to go back to his roots by spending his birthday gift on a bass guitar and soon started jamming with co-founder Doug Hill and performing all over the Phoenix area.” The ensemble has since been re-formed, and their first release, Blues for the Road, featured a hit song called “I Love Money.”

Along with Bluesman Mike (bass, vocals and harmonica) are Sugar Bear on lead guitar and vocals; Bobby Nealy on keyboards, and Steve Loecher on drums. The inside of the CD cover also displays photos of Julissa Ruth, Tony Mockridge, Sandra Bassett, Perry Seen, T.J. Henry, Tim Robinson, Sam Speed, and Jijjy (that’s J-I-J-J-Y) Van.

The following number is a blues treat that’ll move your feet and a title that just can’t be beat.

Track 11: “You Treat My Love Like It’s Roadkill” – Ta-da, the moment you’ve been waiting for! A Chicago-style swinger with a resonating intro that kicks some serious possum tail, track eleven is Bluesman Mike’s ace in the hole. “You treat my love like it’s roadkill, steamroll over me like I never gave you a thrill…” At the tail end of a romance, truer words were never spoken. If you want to play along on your dobro or slide at home, but fear you’re no Sonny Landreth, take heart: Even the freshest of guitar freshmen will be able to keep up with this one.

Bluesman Mike and the Blues Review Band want one and all to know: We Do the Blues, but a whole lot of jazz and soul along with it! ~RAINEY WETNIGHT
