Clifton Chenier & His Red Hot Louisiana Band - Live At Tipitina's (June 7, 1980)

Size: 91.2 MB
Time: 39:14
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2025
Styles: Blues Zydeco
Art: Front

01. Calinda (Live) (4:23)
02. Louisiana Two Step (Live) (4:25)
03. Everybody Calls Me Crazy (Live) (5:48)
04. What'd I Say (Live) (5:23)
05. I'm A Hog For You Baby (Live) (3:58)
06. Party Down (At The Blue Angel Club) (Live) (4:49)
07. Three O'Clock Blues (Live) (6:10)
08. Feelin' Happy (Live) (4:15)

The most recent release from the fantastic Tipitina's Record Club is this unique capturing of the legendary Clifton Chenier who played zydeco, R&B, and Cajun music in a distinct fashion; keeping dance floors throughout the south good and sweaty. This vinyl release is from a warm night in 1980 as his Red Hot Louisiana Band display their dynamic range.

One of the interesting things about this capturing is the band Chenier plays with. His core partners of his son CJ on alto sax and Cleveland his older brother on Frottoir, had been playing with Clifton for years. They are here with longtime collaborators Robert St Julien on drums and Jumpin' Joe Morris on bass but this show also has featured the killer Sonny Landreth on guitar along with Jerry Conrad on B3.

This impressive collection of musicians dive right in with the upbeat Cajun blues of the strolling "Calinda". Clifton sings in French as he commands the stage, vamping and moving with ease while the sax work and organ pair beautifully; a reoccurring theme throughout this show. The accordion great gets his full on zydeco pumping for "Louisiana Two Step" before the blues pour out on the cooking "Everybody Calls Me Crazy" which finds emotive singing from Clifton.

The bands first true cover pops up next with their take on Ray Charles' classic "What I'd Say" and they do not disappoint. The revved up take uses energetic singing, a smoking tempo, and hip shaking goodness all around as the full band hit their stride.

Side two starts with Clifton's take on the Coasters "I'm A Hog For You Baby" as the Cajun blues gets some zydeco touches before "Party Down (At The Blue Angel Club)" once again goes full bore with zydeco letting Clifton, CJ, and Cleveland dominate the stage. While Landreth had impressive moments, he steals the spotlight on the hardcore "Three O'Clock Blues" as his lead slide runs and dynamite guitar playing shines bright, while Conrad's B3 work is also majestic.

The album wraps up with Clifton's version of "Feelin' Happy" which pays tribute lyrically to Blind Lemon Jefferson and Big Joe Turner, pulling the blues into the swamps as the group gets down in 50's R&B style to close the night.

Almost as impressive as the music is the detailed linear notes from Todd Mouton, author of the book Way Down in Louisiana: Clifton Chenier, Cajun, Zydeco, And Swamp Pop Music. The notes give historic context to the performance, as well as dive into this musical world with vigor.

Another excellent release from Tipitina's Record Club, Clifton Chenier and his Red Hot Louisiana Band's Live at Tipitina's is recommended to those who are longtime fans of the artist and those who are brand new to his zydeco sounds as well.

Mississippi, particularly the Delta, lays claim to being the land where the blues began. Forged in the crucible of poverty and racial oppression, blues flourished there as nowhere else, evolving into what most critics consider the deepest or most intense strain of the blues tradition. During the Great Migration, music changed consistently, adapting to its new surroundings like St. Louis and Chicago, while retaining its connection to its down home Delta roots. This collection celebrates the diversity and dissemination of the blues’ most powerful and influential voices.

A marvellous black American singer and accordionist, Clifton Chenier succeeded in forging a style all his own, Zydeco, and for a long time he was considered its sole representative.
Born in the 30s, the music came from mixed Creole and Cajun cultures in French-speaking Louisiana; when Chenier took hold of the genre it was marginal and mocked by mainstream America, but in just a few years, with a series of hit albums, the man they called the “King of Zydeco” turned the music into an accomplished form of expression that everyone appreciated.
This anthology from Jean Buzelin follows the history of this King’s coronation between 1954 and 1960.
After the titles already featured in the album “Zydeco,1929-1972” (FA5616), Frémeaux & Associés is proud to highlight the work and genius of this legendary artist. ~Patrick FRÉMEAUX

Rod Bernard & Clifton Chenier - Boogie In Black & White

Size: 99,7 MB

03. High Heel Sneakers (3:22)

08. Shake Rattle & Roll (3:16)
09. My Jolie Blonde (2:54)
10. Rockin' Pneumonia And Boogie Woogie Flu (2:07)

A reissue of a 1976 album, this is an unlikely collaboration between two legends of South Louisiana music.

At the time, Rod Bernard’s swamp pop hit records (“This Should Go on Forever,” “Colinda”) had long been considered oldies and he was pursuing a career as a TV station ad rep. Chenier was then the “King of Zydeco” and at the peak of his popularity. He and his Red Hot Louisiana Band ruled the Creole dance halls and Chenier was an in-demand attraction for concert promoters worldwide.

Recorded at Floyd Soileau’s old Ville Platte studio, Boogie in Black & White is for the most part an enjoyable—even if not terribly creative—run through of blues and rock and roll standards: “My Babe,” “Kansas City,’ “High Heel Sneakers,” “Baby, What You Want Me to Do?”—you get the idea. There are no originals in the compact 10-song package.

Bernard handles all the vocals and he sounds confident and energetic. Chenier concentrated on leading the band with his rocking accordion and, as always, his style is instantly recognizable. A definite plus here is the inclusion of saxophone legend John Hart, who was then Chenier’s first lieutenant. Hart produces several splendid solos throughout. Another plus here are informative sleeve notes by Bernard’s son, Shane.

Not a definite must-have release—that would be The Essential Rod Bernard and Chenier’s Bogalusa Boogie—but a rollicking time capsule from an important era of Louisiana music. ~Jeff Hannusch

This was the first full album by a zydeco artist to be released by Arhoolie. It became something of an advance scout as the Cajun accordion army began to spread its music outside of the Louisiana bayous, with Clifton Chenier winding up with a Grammy for his efforts, as well as performances all over the world. This album puts together a few different instrumental lineups for recording at Houston's Gold Star studios, a facility with an important place in Texas blues history. Nonetheless recording sound is a tad thin, as perhaps the engineers were frightened by some of the manic moves of a few of the instrumentalists. Although this style of music is known mostly for the accordion and rubboard antics as featured on the second side, the tracks on the first side also include some ferocious piano and electric guitar playing. Some tracks just really cook and should put any listener in a good mood. The instrumental "Hot Rod" has a great drum part and accordion improvising that sounds totally relaxed, followed by an under-recorded but nasty-sounding guitar solo. Too bad it fades out so quickly. Altogether, lots of variety, plenty of creative musical ideas, and some deeply soulful singing delivered by this great zydeco artist just as his career was starting to lift off. -- Allmusic.

This collection draws together most of the recordings made during the first six years of his career.

Jukebox hits galore! Backed by washboard, drums, guitar and sometimes sax you won't believe the sound of these tracks. These are the authentic sounds of the bayous played, quite simply by the most popular zydeco artist of all time.

Raw blues gems trawled from the swamps of South Louisiana, plus a touch of zydeco. Ten tracks are previously unreleased or alternate takes, while the other 18 are extremely rare.

Baton Rouge was arguably the blues centre of Louisiana and just about all of the artists featured in this compilation spent part of their lives there. Long-time favourites Lightnin’ Slim, Lazy Lester, Slim Harpo and Silas Hogan certainly honed their skills in its clubs and bars, although they travelled some 70 miles west to record at J.D. Miller’s studio in Crowley. Everything here emanated from Miller’s studio or from his close rival Eddie Shuler’s facility in Lake Charles, except series newcomer Chris Kenner’s track, which was cut in New Orleans. Other artists new to the series are Henry Gray, Juke Boy Bonner, Elton Anderson, Ramblin’ Hi Harris and Schoolboy Cleve.

All of which means we have another feast of classic blues, led by guitar, piano or harmonica, plus a little zydeco from Clifton Chenier and Boozoo Chavis, whose tracks sit comfortably alongside the work of Lonesome Sundown, Jimmy Anderson and our other artists. During the 50s and 60s zydeco was the blues of the French-speaking black population of Louisiana, with the accordion replacing the harmonica as instrument of choice. Today the music is enjoying huge popularity, with thousands of aficionados from across the globe flooding to festivals in Lafayette, Breaux Bridge and other small towns across southwest Louisiana.

Clifton Chenier's mid-'50s singles for Specialty were among his rawest and simplest; they were short ditties with rippling accordion and gritty vocals on top and driving rhythms and surging instrumental accompaniment underneath. That's the formula displayed on this 20-cut presentation of Chenier's early work, where he was often backed by guitarists Phillip Walker or Cornelius Green (Lonesome Sundown), with his brother Cleveland handling rubboard duties. This is Chenier in his stylistic infancy, building and nurturing what ultimately became a signature sound. ~Review by Ron Wynn
