Recorded in their hometown of Austin, Texas, with Grammy award winning producer Stuart Sikes (The White Stripes, Cat Power, Modest Mouse) at the helm, Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears’ fifth studio album delivers more of the familiar southern soul, gritty blues, and vintage rock n’ roll sound that Lewis has perfected throughout his career. However, The Difference Between Me & You charts into new territory with a heavy stream of lyrical consciousness reflective of the current pop-culture and political mood.

The band’s new album works to explore the human psyche through an impassioned and introspective lens while exploring a deep repertoire of sounds: the heavy grooves of Albert King, punked-up blues of R.L. Burnside, the storytelling of Bobby “Blue” Bland, and the soulfully layered horns of The Rolling Stones. “Culture Vulture” isn’t the only track that expands on the vices and followers within society, similar themes of derision can also be found on “Rhyme of Reason”. And on the boisterous opening track “Nothing but a Cliché”, Lewis exposes an old acquaintance whose interests were best suited only for themselves.

Mining through Lewis’ first decade of experience on the road, The Difference Between Me & You, traverses a lifetime of physical and metaphysical experiences and is characterized by looking in the mirror – and asking yourself the tough questions.

lack Joe Lewis trawls the intersection of blues, soul, funk, and garage rock—a well-traveled juncture. But he has a few strategies to make this timeworn mixture more tangy on his new album, Backlash. The first is vocal: Lewis can unleash a stirring scream, a cauterizing billow of noise that’s sure to flutter your nervous system. The second is compositional: he likes shifting dynamics so that a slack song suddenly stiffens and lashes out, like a horse kicking an inconsiderate handler.

That scream, coupled with his heavy reliance on guitars, has earned Lewis comparisons to blues institutions (Muddy Waters), soul shouters (Wilson Pickett), and funk innovators (James Brown). But he prefers a different descriptor. “It’s all about putting on a good show and getting everyone having a good time,” he said in 2013. “There’s no category for that other than rock’n’ roll, as far as I know.”

Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears - 2 albums: Scandalous (Deluxe Version) / Tell 'Em What Your Name Is!

Black Joe Lewis is a 24-year-old Texan who quickly turned to music after working an office job. Lewis' raw and emotional vocals are reminiscent of James Brown and Lightnin' Hopkins, both of whom Lewis admires. As he continues to perform, more audiences warm up to his rough-hewn blues.

Lewis skillfully combines southern gospel funk, soul, and Texas blues. He performs with other artists such as harmonica and tenor-sax player Walter Daniels, as well as backing bands such as Cool Breeze. It adds a rhythmically and melodically dynamic aspect to his songs, which stylistically resemble old soul music.

Black Joe Lewis is: Joseph Lewis, Bill Stevenson, Eduardo Torres, Jason Frey, Joe Woullard, Derek Phelps.
