With the unusual title »Recorded by Martin Meinschäfer II«, the new album is a logical follow-up to its predecessor from 2009, but sounds completely different – ??13 years older and 13 years younger! As on previous albums, the multi-instrumentalist recorded almost all instruments himself, for the Hammond organ and keyboard parts he received well-known support: Moritz – Mr. Mo – Fuhrhop – a master of his craft!

Rocky riffs with extended solos, old-school funk groovers with headbanging potential and melancholic ballads with depth. Add to that the warm and analog sound of old microphones and instruments. A wonderful blues rock album with a live character and a new chapter in Henrik Freischlader's discography.

That’s how the new release from Henrik Freischlader ‘Missing Pieces’ came into being, according to the band website anyway. As easy as that? Ah, but if you are familiar with Henrik at all you will know that under the cap, behind the pleasant grin and cool, easy-going persona, there is a lot of work, attention to detail and thought behind everything the man does – from the studio through to the cover artwork. Like it’s predecessor ‘Hands on the Puzzle’ the new disc is a veritable work of Art on all levels. In fact, unless you’re a dyed in the wool Alt-Blues purist or Hell-bent Rocker, you will very likely find ‘Missing Pieces’ to be Henrik’s best and most creative work to date. Henrik Freischlader’s manifesto for a peaceful revolution is a surefire winner.

Let’s get the cold data out there first. Recorded and mixed by Martin Meinschäfer at the Megaphon Studio in Arnsberg, ‘Missing Pieces’ continues musically where 2018’s ‘Hands on the Puzzle’ left off. Those hoping that 2017’s ‘Blues for Gary’ would signal a full return to Henrik as a Bluesman are still out of luck. The rest of us though are very much in luck as, without having to adhere to specific genre restrictions, Henrik can fully unfurl his creative mind. All songwriting and music credits go to Mr Freischlader, as does the producer credit, and it’s good to see the word ‘Band’ on the cover. I was never quite sold on Henrik playing all the instruments too, despite 2009’s self-titled disc being possibly his best to date. Seemingly he also sees the value of a real band playing simultaneously warts and all (although the quality of this band is such that ‘warts’ would need to be searched for by a microscope).

Opening is a good (if unimaginative!) title for the first instrumental track. Its unimposing name actually hides an instrumental of true delicate beauty. That Henrik’s heroes are the likes of Gary Moore and Peter Green is evident in the way that his playing here is totally from the heart as those two legendary performers played. If, like me, Henrik’s version of Moore’s ‘The Messiah Will Come Again’ was always a highpoint of his concerts to you then you will love this one. New Beginning follows it almost imperceptibly until Henrik’s vocal arrives.

Multi-instrumentalist that Henrik Freischlader is, it’s still his guitar playing that gets the lions share of attention. Well, maybe there is another area where Henrik is due some worthy attention – and that’s his lyric writing. It’s something that will turn up frequently in this review and deservedly so. The accent throughout ‘Missing Pieces’ is on stepping back from the rat-race, taking a breath, being yourself and not trying to be anyone else. The ‘gameplan’ is even laid out as early as track two:

“When you stop playing the game of winning, then you ain’t got nothing more to lose”

It’s a philosophy immediately followed up on with the next track. Power to the Peaceful would make a great car bumper sticker. “The hour has come for the good souls to live their life in the main role”. The music though is never lost in the message on this disc, and there’s a soaring guitar solo in here that’s good for the very soul of those good souls.

Let The People Be Free has a Reggae tinge to it. Based on the previous track maybe that should be ‘Let the Peaceful Be Free’ even? “We don’t believe in your truth, so would you please just let us be!?” Am I seeing a certain American President in this one? There is mention of Souls and of Faith and indeed praising the Lord above. A Gospel message wrapped up in a Reggae rhythm by a Bluesman.

The album’s title track follows with a zippy 1-2-3 beat and nice keyboard work from Roman Babik. “Every little step back is a big step when you’re going in the wrong direction” – too true, and once again I love these lyrics. Justice Blues advises that “When your sky is black, you need to look for the stars” To brighten your perspective? To guide you? again, lovely writing. It’s a track that also emphasizes a further strength of Henrik’s, that is to let the instruments serve the song rather than vice-versa as one might expect from a guitar player. This one rides on a keyboard hook and gentle saxophone. Despite the Blues of it’s title the use of these instruments tilts it strongly into Jazz territory to my ears. What was it that Henrik told me during our interview in 2017? “I honestly have to say that I can’t even play Jazz”. Well his Band certainly can, and the mix with his Bluesy solo makes this a stand-out track. Love that tinkling piano and chugging sax.

Needless to say, the track Not Funky actually is. It’s only the World we live in that isn’t. A fine funky number and I love that Hammond sound at the back. The vocals are also worth a mention here. Not Henrik’s greatest strength, but on this one he shows he can deliver a strong sound on more than just a guitar. A star track too for Jazz fans when Babik and and Zügner get a chance for some interplay mid-song on keys and sax respectively. Would love to hear an extended version of this live – hopefully the cancelled 2020 Tour will take place in 2021.

Slow Rock Blues is what Henrik does almost with his eyes closed. If there’s a criticism of I Wanna Thank You then it’s that the disc up to now has been so creative and this number seems a little too much ‘back on the bread and butter Blues’ style. Safe, dependable, and an indication of the jump that so much of this release has made in comparison. Still a gem lyrically though: “Just when my broken boat was sinking, I swam back home to you”

What Have I Done To You? is a number that will make those long-time fans of Henrik’s Blues happy. The vocal is as angry as Henrik manages to get but his ‘second voice’ is more than eloquent as that guitar of his hits out with a snarling air that his physical voice never quite reaches. So if you bought the disc for great Blues guitar, don’t give it back! This is Henrik playing that style at his very best.

Grown Up has a sax intro that sounds familiar from something else by Henrik. Or Tommy Schneller perhaps? It’s gloriously Funky though and has an infectious positive vibe. “I don’t wanna be grown-up. I wanna keep on growing. I don’t wanna be there, because I wanna keep going” One and One is One plays nicely with words and has a wonderfully quirky chorus that reminds me of two-tone music (remember that?). I can imagine this being introduced on ‘Top of The Pops’ back in the day. Is there still a singles chart? Where’s MTV when you need it? Turn up loud and groove!

Speaking of hit-single material… We Used To Be Happy would have been an enormous hit for Elvis Costello. It sounds like an out-take from his ‘Almost Blue’ days. I would indeed love to hear Elvis take this one on vocally, with Henrik on lead guitar. A match made in Heaven.

We’ve arrived at the closing track already. Time has indeed flown by in the company of some fine gentle Funk and light Blues. The tempo is upped somewhat for the closing In The Shadow Of The Spotlight. I’m reminded of Thin Lizzy/Pink Floyd guitarist Snowy White here who in a recent interview said how he never wanted to be in the spotlight, he just wanted to play music. It’s Henrik’s mantra here too. Step back and do your own thing. It’s not about being a Star it’s about making music you are proud of. Henrik took this to its natural conclusion some years ago when he created his own label (Cable Car Records). In case you didn’t get the message though, it’s here in the (once again) excellent lyrics: “I got news for you. The Blues for you. I ain’t gonna do what they want me to do!”

On the strength of Missing Pieces, I am very grateful he chooses to do what he wants to do instead.

Five stars for the music then. Five stars too for the painstaking work done on the packaging with it’s cut-out cover and postcard inserts that replace part of the cover and also contain the song texts. Could Henrik have saved a whole heap of money by just putting this out in a plain paper cover? Yes, he could, but clearly he figures his music is worth more than that – and so will you. ~3songsbonn

Henrik Freischlader is a workaholic when it comes to music. For the self-taught multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, producer, and label owner, the stages in Europe have been a second home for many years now. His extensive discography already contains six studio albums and three live albums. On his own music label Cable Car Records, which he founded in 2009, Henrik has been able to realize his musical projects and experiments. The albums “Recorded by Martin Meinschäfer”, “Still Frame Replay” with a guest appearance by Joe Bonamassa, and “Night Train to Budapest” were recorded single-handedly. The two live albums “Tour 2010 Live” and “Live in Concerts” as well as „House in the Woods“, which was recorded together with his band, were also released on his own label.

For a few years now, Henrik has devoted his talent as a multi-instrumentalist and composer to other artists as well. He has already produced three albums for Canadian artist Layla Zoe, two for well-known sax player and singer Tommy Schneller as well as one album for Italian folk and blues musician Linda Sutti.

A tour with his friend and fellow musician Joe Bonamassa gave the young artist the opportunity to play in front of a bigger audience. Muddy, loose and full of confident energy, ‘House in the Woods’ is an album that’s full of foot stomping groove, infusing blues and rock aspects of greats such as Stevie Ray Vaughan, B.B. King and Jimi Hendrix. The jamming nature of the music is accented by the traditional sound of the production. Although this album clearly leans to the blues and rock of the aforementioned influences, it really is an album that stands out on its own through a mixture of great song writing and musical craftsmanship.

For a man who only started playing guitar because the neighbours complained about his drumming Henrik Freischlader has become something of a guitar legend, not just here in Germany but, through appearances with BB King and recently Tedeschi Trucks, worldwide. It’s almost a shame, because there is a whole lot more than just guitar licks to the man as his latest disc Openness reveals.

Many readers will already be fans of Henrik and aware that this is something of a ‘comeback’ album. The previous studio CD, 2013’s ‘Night Train to Budapest’, was as always well produced and well played but to my ears anyway, lacked a spark, that extra something that makes a song stick in the mind or heart. I’m glad to say that with his new band and new enthusiasm, the new release has not just a spark, but a roaring flame.

The CD cover itself is a clue to what you find on the disc inside. A plain band portrait on the front and just the band members names and their instruments on the inside flap. I’m not familiar with either bassist Alex Grube or Drummer Carl-Michael Grabinger but they really do a great job of creating the backdrop for Henrik. Notably this is a trio. Not a keyboard player on the cover or indeed on the disc.

It does strike me that the guitars on most of the tracks and indeed also the vocals seem to have been recorded separately from the rest of the band but it certainly isn’t evident on the recordings themselves which sound like a tight trio in the studio together. Both Grabinger and Grube have an eye on the groove at all times. The music is what counts and Freischlader’s aim was perhaps inspired by the late Master BB King, that of playing only the notes necessary ‘Less is more’ is the philosophy and with the trio set-up it really pays dividends.

I’m sure Henrik wouldn’t deny the influence of power trios past in his playing. Bands like Hendrix’, Cream and Taste are at the core of the discs opener – aptly titled ‘Openness’. The overall mood though is a spectrum of Blues styles that cover the classic walking variety in ‘Early Morning Blues’ and straight ahead boogie ‘Lord have mercy’, the big ballad ‘Never really left you’ and the pared down to the bone ‘Senses’.

There are some unexpected gems musically on here too. ‘Nobody else to blame’ is almost a steal from the Police rhythmically. ‘Today I’m gonna change’ kicks off like BB King but is a positive blues (yes it exists!). With it’s declaration that “Today I’m gonna change yesterday’s plan for tomorrow” it could be the whole explanation behind the change of band and temporary break from the stage in song.

A favourite is ‘Techno’ and it shows that the guitar hero (and the guitar on this CD is held very much in check) is a pretty mean lyric writer too in what isn’t his native tongue. “We’re so techno, gotta be a little more rock n roll” he sings and that’s really the philosophy behind the new CD and indeed the new enthusiasm of Henrik Freischlader – a need to return to the basics. The Henrik Freischlader Trio’s ‘Openness’ certainly shows the way! An excellent disc that comes recommended to Freischlader fans and to those who though his best was already on record. On this evidence It may just be beginning.

The first time I hear of this guy is on the live document of his farewell tour…What’s up wit dat? How did this German blues-rock guitar hero fly under my radar? Able to bend a note in a single bound, faster than a speeding bullet. The band is highly capable of slowing things down and to deliver quiet and intricate moments. Then before you know it here they come again beating your brains out with some incredibly intense blues=rocking power. Henrik sure knows his way around a guitar. Henrik is his name and note-bending is his game. He is able to impress with his hard attack or can give you chills with some tender soloing. His keyboard player Moritz Fuhrhop supplies the alternate solos in an often jazzy and energetic style. The drumming of Dirk Sengotta and the bass playing of Theofilos Fotiadis is powerful but precise. All songs are Henrik Freischlader originals. All in all this is the kind of well-played blues-rock that works for me.

The band comes out swinging as they beat you over the head with the heavy and noisy “A Better Man”, with Henrik’s strong and gravelly voice pleading that he will change his ways. His vocals drip honesty. We get the first taste of his take charge guitar style. Crashing drums are the icing on the cake. A bit of sarcasm is dished up in “Too Cool For Me” with it’s slow, loping riff peppered with a jazzy Fender Rhodes piano solo and string-bending galore. Henrik plays straight blues guitar before he charges it up. He also begins “Disappointed Women” with blues soloing before really catching blues-rock fire.

The slow and brooding “Keep Playin’” touches on personal relationships. Moritz’s organ solo switches to a piano solo and the guitar is spot on as usual. “Everything Is Gone’ is heavy goodness as Henrik delivers precision-perfect notes. “Gimme All You Got” delivers all they got with some heavy and funky playing tinged with a bit of Heavy Metal oomph. A Stevie Ray Vaughn-like rhythm underlies some speed-freak guitar fireworks on “She Ain’t Got the Blues” about leaving a woman alone because she ain’t got ‘em.

The jazzy and pensive “Guitar Intro” segues into “Desert Love” that basically exists as a vehicle for guitar soloing that soars ala Jeff Beck and Robin Trower. It starts off with lyrics that aren’t an after thought but the gist of the song is instrumentally driven. The guitar solos drip with soulful, heartfelt energy.

This tight unit takes you on a journey that at times jars you with noisy delight and then tugs at your heart strings with some touching instrumental moments. This is another example of music crossing culture lines to show us music is music. It also helps that there is no accent in Henrik’s singing voice to confuse his message. It’s curious how he slips from his German language between song patter right into perfect English singing. This is blues-rock at its’ finest.

Henrik Freischlader is a German blues guitarist, singer, songwriter, producer and self-taught multi-instrumentalist from the North Rhine-Westphalia area of Germany. He was born in Cologne, and began his musical journey as a drummer. When he was 14 he heard “Cold Day in Hell” by Gary Moore on the radio, which inspired him to play blues guitar.

He started his career by playing in small venues, for the little reward, but he has gained many loyal fans in this way. Then his big break came when he opened for Joe Bonamassa in 2006. Thanks to this, Freischlader had access to a much wider audience.

Henrik Freischlader is a workaholic when it comes to music. For the self-taught multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, producer, and label owner, the stages in Europe have been a second home for many years now. His extensive discography already contains six studio albums and three live albums. On his own music label Cable Car Records, which he founded in 2009, Henrik has been able to realize his musical projects and experiments. The albums “Recorded by Martin Meinschäfer”, “Still Frame Replay” with a guest appearance by Joe Bonamassa, and “Night Train to Budapest” were recorded single-handedly. The two live albums “Tour 2010 Live” and “Live in Concerts” as well as "House in the Woods“, which was recorded together with his band, were also released on his own label.

For a few years now, Henrik has devoted his talent as a multi-instrumentalist and composer to other artists as well. He has already produced two albums for Canadian artist Layla Zoe – and for the well-known sax player and singer Tommy Schneller, the second album is in the pipeline.

A tour with his friend and fellow musician Joe Bonamassa gave the young artist the opportunity to play in front of a bigger audience. Today, the German singer & guitarist is one of the most sought-after musicians of his genre worldwide.

Henrik Freischlader (born November 3, 1982) is a German blues guitarist, singer, songwriter, producer, and autodidactic multi-instrumentalist from Wuppertal, Germany.
During his teenage years, he started his career as a blues guitarist and singer in bands such as Lash and Bluescream. In 2004, he formed the Henrik Freischlader Band and released his first album "The Blues" in 2006. The follow-up album "Get Closer" was released a year later in 2007. A live album then followed in 2008 entitled "Henrik Freischlader Band Live". Henrik Freischlader's style of music cannot purely be considered blues. He often blends in musical styles such as rock, jazz, soul, and funk, even though blues is the basis of all of his songs. His guitar-playing is influenced by Gary Moore, Stevie Ray Vaughan, B.B. King, Peter Green, Albert Collins, and Albert King. As he grew up, Freischlader taught himself how to play the drums, the bass guitar, the guitar, and various other instruments. On his studio album "Recorded by Martin Meinschäfer" (2009) he plays all instruments - guitars, bass guitar, drums, percussion, and hammond organ. In addition to this, he composed the songs, wrote the lyrics, produced the record, and released it on his own record label Cable Car Records. A second live album - "Tour 2010 Live" - was published in late 2010 after an extensive tour through Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. In 2011, Freischlader released the album "Still Frame Replay" on which he, again, plays most of the instruments. Current band members are Theofilos Fotiadis (bass guitar, backing vocals), Björn Krüger (drums, backing vocals), and Moritz "Mo" Fuhrhop (hammond organ). In September 2012, Henrik Freischlader Band released their latest album "House in the Woods" which was recorded live by all four band members at Megaphon Tonstudios - with additional vocal recordings. In fall 2012, they went on an extensive tour through Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Hungary, the Netherlands, and Belgium. For spring 2013, shows in the UK, Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, the Czech Republic, and Hungary have been scheduled.
