Al Cook was born Alois Kurt Koch on February 27th 1945 in Bad Ischl, Upper Austria, but spent his entire life in Vienna. Music was no subject to him, until he came in touch with Rock And Roll Music on July 25, 1960, watching an old Elvis picture from 1957, called "Loving You", which changed his attitudes to music and life forever. Al Cook tried hard to escape a dull existence as a laborer in a mechanical factory. From then on, he wanted to live a decidedly artistic and free life, but he had to keep patient for nearly 13 Years to overcome with his music. In October 1963, Al Cook bought himself a cheap "campfire-box", as he likes to identify his first guitar and launched his rocket exactly a year later, on October 17th 1964 at an amateur-variety show. But the era of Rock n Roll died, in Al Cook's eyes, with the clipping of Elvis sideburns at the close of the 50's. Al Cook's appearance turned out to end up in a disastrous failure, because the Beatles had killed the RnR Stars and the music and lifestyle of the fifties were no longer in style. Al Cook refused to jump the bandwagon and decided to quit the world of popular entertainment to look for something that suited his rather individualistic personality. Accidentally, he came in touch with ancient forms of afro-american folk-music, that everybody knows as "The Blues". From then on, Al Cook dedicated his life to the Blues and tried to maintain a career as an uncompromising artist, who still remains true to himself. Neither the steady changing of public tastes nor occassionally bright financial offers could make him walk off-path, or collaborate with commercialism. After several years of unrewarded appearances, the upcoming folk-boom of the woodstock era offered the young blues-artist a string of opportunities. On November 1970, Al Cook opened up his recording career with the first release of a pure blues production called "Working Man Blues". Al still sounded like an immature Elvis clone, trying to sing black country-blues, but it caused some recognition by the mass-medias. Within a year, Al Cook's reputation as an excellent and charismatic bluesman was taking over. Nobody ever saw a bluesman, that was neither black, nor american and never set foot on the U.S. It took five years of hard training, to wash out his viennese accent and to understand ancient black double talk. While other white blues artists preferred the easier-to-listen British Blues, or the 50's Muddy Waters stuff, Al Cook went back to the cottonfield era of the 20s and 30s. His idols were singers like Blind Lemon Jefferson, Charley Patton, Son House, Texas Alexander and of course Robert and Tommy Johnson and a variety of the obscurest Bluespeople in history. Country Blues is a music of wild beauty and colorful variety, because every artist had his own style in those days. Al Cook made several other Albums, that were released more or less consecutive, but his most valuable is a collector's item by the title of "Slide Guitar Foolin'", a cheaply, but exclusively designed cardboard cover with no picture on it. Some collectors believed, that this platter was some field-recording of a recently discovered oldtimer. With the close of the 70's, the popularity of non-commercial music declined rapidly. The Saturday Night Fever was at its outbreak and Disco music and "cool" life-styles became popular. The Blues and its related stuff turned obsolete and vanished into obscurity. Al Cook had to undergo some hard times and lived on a shoestring. 1983 marked a flashing renaissance of Rockabilly-Music and the 50's styles returned for a brief period. TV and Radiostations promoted young Rockabilly talents and Al Cook thought, he could make some additional money, without suffering artistic pain. An extended-play record (4 cuts on a single) was made and sold only at concerts. Again, Al Cook influenced young musicians to become dedicated Rockabilly-performers (The first were The Salty Dogs). But the whole thing wound up in simplified Retro-Pop and the fan-scene was increasingly infested by "Rebels" and right-wing actionists. Al Cook became tired and disgusted of such fandom and switched back to black blues, practially overnight. 1989, Al Cook celebrated his 25th Stage- Anniversary and the press crowned him "White King Of Black Blues". This title is now used as a sometimes provocant trademark-slogan. A double Album, named "Twenty Five Blues Years" was released and the entire scene was jamming with the now celebrated blues-legend and Al Cook's name became a household name in Austria. After a longer period of public absence, Al Cook switched over to Wolf-Records, our pure blues label, which won three W.C. Handy awards to the credit of his owner. Now Al benefits from total artistic liberty and produces his albums himself by using his own studio equipment. He sometimes hires the best musicians, often those who were started by his legendary performances, when they were still in their teens. Al Cook released four Albums on Wolf Records, spanning from archaic blues-shouting to complex Boogie and RnB stuff that's entirely self-penned. And there are some more to follow. Al Cook is now 59 years old, 40 years on stage, but still going strong. He hopes to keep things goin' and get more young listeners to discover the immortal beauty of the Blues.

The Bad Blues Quartet was formed in summer 2014 from the meeting between Federico Valenti, Eleonora Usala, Frank Stara and Simone Arca. The band started its activity playing the tunes of the masters as well as the most modern sounds (from Elmore James to John Mayer, from Stevie Ray Vaughan to Susan Tedeschi, from Ray Charles to Muddy Waters).

After a few months of activity around Sardinia, the quartet felt the necessity of composing original pieces as well, beginning to insert them gradually into their repertoire until they became the central pillar of their performances and their creative work. Some of these tracks were presented in summer 2015 at the "Sulle Strade del Blues" Festival in Cagliari. The various musical influences of the members of the group, absolutely heterogeneous, they reflect on their songs, mixing blues with funk and modern black music.

On June 1st 2017 the band published its debut album simply called "Bad Blues Quartet". The tracks were recorded at the Metropolitan Studio of Monserrato with the Sardinian guitarist and producer Massimo Satta, established for years in the Italian music scene. The album contains eight original songs and a cover of an old work song, recorded by Alan Lomax in the 30's, and has the partecipation of several guest musicians, well known in the Italian and Sardinian blues scene. The album has been very well greeted with ratings and reviews from radios, magazines and industry experts.

During spring and summer 2019 the band plays in several blues festivals all across Italy such as Go Marche In Blues, Torrita Blues Festival, Pignola In Blues and Campania Blues Festival. On July 27 Bad Blues Quartet release their second record called "Back On My Feet". The tracks were recorded at Sonic Tower Records with sound engineer Giampi Guttuso, and is released under the label Talk About Records and featured by Blues Made In Italy. The record contains six original songs and two covers by Vera Hall and Nathaniel Rateliff, and features collaborations of several guests.

In May 2021 Bad Blues Quartet release their third record called "First Time Last Time" which has been entirely live recorded and filmed in an empty theater, due to the pandemic restrictions. It contains live versions of several songs from previous studio works and two unpublished songs. In February 2023 Bad Blues Quartet starts the recordings of the new upcoming studio album in Brescia at Monolith Studio. This work will be produced by the multi-awarded american guitarist Mike Zito. The record will also feature several special guests from the Italian blues scene. The record will be co-produced by Sweet Music agency, with the precious help from Slang Music agency.

In 1989, the band had wide projection at the first International Festival of Blues in the city of Ribeirão Preto, opening the festival on the same night that Buddy Guy was performing. The festival was a turning point for the blues genre in Brazil and several national bands emerged, influenced by the sound of Blues Etílicos. During this period, the Blues Etílicos was featured on several special programs on TV Culture, Headline Network and MTV in addition to having their music broadcasted widely on FM radio shows throughout the country.

Blues Etílicos was the first and the main national band to create a loyal following in this segment, and because of this they participated in all the festivals connected to the blues music genre, sharing the stage with leading names in international blues that visited the country like B.B. King, Robert Cray, Buddy Guy and others.

Blues guitarist, singer, and BMA Nominee Johnny Burgin describes his never-ending touring schedule in a typically understated way: "It takes me a year to see my friends, and then I do it all over again." Often travelling without a band, he discovers novel and fruitful collaborations on the road.

"Ramblin' from Coast to Coast" is the result: eleven original blues from the road cut in Dallas, Cincinnati, Rochester NY and Memphis TN with cameos from the likes of John Blues Boyd, Rae Gordon, Ben Levin, Hanna PK, Jad Tariq, Jon Hay, and Dylan Bishop. Johnny draws from his years of experience in the Chicago blues idiom (as well as his popular weekly blues guitar YouTube videos) to put just the right repartee into the musical conversation.

Johnny's also known as a strong writer; "Gettin' My Blues On" is from the point of view of a diehard blues fan who is just scraping by financially. Judging from audience reactions, this tune is poised to be the Blues Anthem of the Year.

Her first single, "Testify," appeared in 1969. In 1970 she was frontwoman for the otherwise all-male Gospel Souls, who cut five singles and an album, but the latter went unreleased. She retired from recording and sang only in church or on the radio for nearly 40 years. In 2019, Bruce Watson coaxed her back into performing and signed her to Bible & Tire Recording Company. In 2021, aged 77, she released her debut album, Living in the Last Days, followed by 2022's I Got a Love. Soul Provider was recorded at Delta Sonic Sound in Memphis with the Sacred Soul Sound Section (Will Sexton on guitar, bass, and keyboards; Matt Ross-Spang on guitar; Mark Edgar Stuart on bass, and Will McCarley on drums and percussion). The ten-song set also employs a host of guests who include Jimbo Mathus and guitarist John Paul Keith.

The album offers a more soul forward presentation. Some of the songs were written by members of her band, some are King originals; there are gospel standards and a cover of Lou Reed's "Jesus." The title-track opener was written by Mathus. He plays guitar, organ, and sings backup alongside Mississippi singer-songwriter Schaefer Llana. It's a souled-out love song to God that sounds like it came from Goldwax Records during the '60s. There's conviction in King's voice which rises above Jamison Hollister's upright gospel piano and fiddle as she sings about traveling south of heaven on the Jericho Way with God. Organ, fiddle, and guitars bubble and roil above the stately drum kit as she testifies, "I'm walking in circles/I know who I am/I finally understand ...." The second single, "Stretch Out," is a slow, funky gospel-blues penned by King. Her vocal, buoyed by Alex Greene's organ and synth, is given added depth by the Sacred Soul Sound Section.

"Tables in the Temple," composed by Keith, also revels in the blues. His guitar supports Gamble's Wurlitzer electric piano atop a four/four drum shuffle and call-and-response between King and her vocal chorus. Sexton's "Anything I Could Ever Want" is a burning Southern funk workout adorned with brassy horns, gritty wah-wah guitar, a filthy bassline, and cracking breakbeats. It's followed by Lou Reed's "Jesus" from the Velvet Underground's White Light/White Heat." She renders it faithfully and without irony, using psychedelic trappings such as reverbed flutes, sitar, and backmasked production. The set closes with the standard "I Couldn't Hear Nobody Pray." The band's slow, swaggering shuffle allows King vocal freedom. She digs deep into the grain of her voice for the nuanced spiritual truth in her DNA. Soul Provider is easily as consistent as her previous albums, but it's also rawer, more intimate. It's the most startlingly immediate date in her catalog. /Thom Jurek, AllMusic

Originally a poet and fiction writer, Al Basile was the first to get a master's degree from Brown University's Creative Writing program; he also wrote musicals as an undergraduate. Meeting Duke Robillard in 1969 changed his artistic direction for life. He began his performing career in 1973, hired by Duke as the first trumpet player for Rhode Island's premier jump band Roomful of Blues, and played with such blues and jazz greats as Cleanhead Vinson, Red Prysock, Helen Humes, Joe Turner, and Johnny Shines. Leaving in 1975 to devote himself to teaching, singing, and songwriting, he was reunited with Duke Robillard, Roomful's founder, in the late eighties, His songs and playing have continued to appear throughout the nineties on Robillard's records for Rounder, Stony Plain, Pointblank, and Shanachie. Songs he has cowritten with Duke have been used on television's Homicide: Life on the Street and the feature film Blood and WIne. Ruth Brown recorded one of Al's songs on her Handy Award winning 1997 release R&B=Ruth Brown, and was the first project with a song by Al to be nominated for a Grammy. The second came last year on Duke's Guitar Groove-a-Rama featuring Al's tune "This Dream (Still Coming True)" was nominated for Best Traditional Blues Album of 2006. Al began his own solo recording career in 1998 with the well received Down On Providence Plantation and followed that up with 2001's Shaking the Soul Tree. Both discs were roots projects produced by Robillard and with him and his band backing Basile up on his own blues and soul based roots songs, the second emphasizing Memphis soul grooves and adding former Susan Tedeschi keyboardist Tom West to a horn section with Doug James and Sax Gordon Beadle alongside Al's cornet. 2003's Red Breath was Basile's first jazz CD, though he had fronted jazz combos for twenty-five years and had been featured as a swing-based cornetist on Duke's jazz projects such as After Hours Swing Session. Several underknown songs by Rodgers and Hart and Vernon Duke were unearthed and given perhaps their first jazz treatment, and Al showed the influences of Armstrong, Sinatra, and Strayhorn in his playing, singing, and writing styles. 2005's solo effort Blue Ink was a collection of Al's blues songs with Duke and his band again backing him up and featuring Jerry Portnoy on harp, fresh from recording Me&Mr.Johnson with Eric Clapton. This was a dream backup band for this material, which covered a range of blues styles from fifties Muddy Waters to Freddy King to swamp/funk blues to New Orleans/Longhair type blues. Duke produced and played guitars throughout. Blue Ink reached #18 on the Living Blues radio chart. 2006's Groovin' in the Mood Room stripped the rhythm section down to feature Duke's guitar solos. and emphasized strong grooves to complement Al's trademark lyrics and soulful snging, and again enjoyed lots of airplay both nnationally and internationally, reaching #14 on the Living Blues chart. Great songwriting, singing, and playing -The Tinge puts it all together, as Al adds generous helpings of his cornet playing to a batch of songs which span Kansas City swing to soul-jazz to the classic blues material he first did with Roomful of Blues. With Roomful's Rich Lataille in the horn section along with Doug James and Duke, half of the original Roomful lineup is at work here, and Al has written blues songs like "Not the Wrong Woman" and "Too Slow" which celebrate their shared past (the latter is sung and played in the manner of Eddie Cleanhead Vinson, with whom Roomful first played in 1973). Bruce Katz is brilliant on piano, organ, and Wurlitzer, and along with mainstays Marty Ballou on bass and Mark Teixeira on drums, the rhythm section nails every stylistic challenge thrown at them, from older style jazz like "While We're Dancing" and "Give Me the Rainbow" to brooding plunger muted blues to bubbly workouts reminiscent of sixties soul. With the addition of his rich open tone and relaxed, lyrical solo work to his highly crafted songs, unique storytelling, and strong, personal vocals, The Tinge is Al Basile's statement record. The books and literary magazines which publish his poetry identify him as a poet, but that's only half the story. His recordings prove that he's a bard of the blues. Al guested as a featured cornet player on Dave Gross' Take the Gamble in 2006, and he continues to work with Duke on his own projects - he played on Blue Mood, Duke's T-Bone Walker tribute record nominated for a Blues Music Award in 2004, A Specal Evening with Duke Robillard and Friends DVD released in 2005, played on and wrote for Guitar Groove-a-Rama, and co-wrote the title tune on Duke's 2007 release World Full of Blues.

Barry Goldberg was a regular fixture in the white blues firmament of the mid-'60s that seemed to stretch from Chicago to New York. A keyboardist (organ seemed to be his specialty), Barry was an in-demand session man - he appears with Michael Bloomfield on a Mitch Ryder album, for instance - along with Al Kooper and his blues-playing contemporary from the original Butterfield band, Mark Naftalin. Goldberg was a member of Charlie Musselwhite's first band, contributing great piano and organ lines to the Stand Back! album (his work on "Cristo Redentor" is moody and introspective, with a strong jazz-inflected feel, while still retaining strong blues roots) and a handful of others throughout the decade. /Biography by Cub Koda, AllMusic

Anthony Geraci - Tears In My Eyes

9. Witchy Ways (4:02)
10. Now What (5:35)
11. Lonely Country Road Blues (3:06)

We should celebrate Anthony Geraci for his fierce dedication to the real deal blues. He’s absorbed the form and consistently adheres to it when his talents could take him in many directions. Multiple BMA nominee and 2021 BMA Winner, pianist and bandleader Anthony Geraci delivers his second album from Blue Heart Records and his seventh as a leader with Tears In My Eyes. That of course doesn’t count his many stints as a band member of Sugar Ray and the Bluetones, Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters, and The Proven Ones, among others.

Before playing a prominent role in those bands and embarking on a solo career, Geraci has the honor of backing the greats such as Muddy Waters, James Cotton, Jimmy Rogers, and many others and pays tribute to these ‘old masters” on this album with eleven tracks, six with vocals and five instrumentals. The current edition of the three-time BMA nominated Band of the Year Boston All-stars is guitarist/vocalist Barrett Anderson, drummers Marty Richards and Kurt Kalker, and bassist Paul Loranger. His former bandleader Sugar Ray Norcia takes the lead vocal on three tracks with Anderson on two and even Geraci on one of them. Blues violin champion Anne Harris guests on “Memphis Mist.” Drew Davies is on saxophone on four tracks with Mario Perrett playing sax on “Judge, Oh Judge.”

The album was recorded in two sessions, one in the Boston area for the first four tracks and the other amidst a European tour in Prague, Czech Republic. Seven original tunes were cut in that one day – tracks five through eleven. The major difference in personnel is just the drummer with Richards in Boston and Kalker in the Czech sessions. Otherwise, the core group is consistent throughout. Geraci lays claim to all eleven as originals. The album is sequenced in reverse with the Boston sessions appearing first, although they were recorded late. [---]

With four decades of music behind him, Geraci is still at heart a traditionalist as reflected in most of the album. He’s always had great piano chops but continues to grow in his songwriting and bandleading, even willing to reveal some contemporary tinges in a few places. Mostly though, he once again shows us how the real blues should go down. /Jim Hynes, Rock & Blues Muse

Kaspar has had a great passion for blues and vintage music since he was 12. Often compared to Duane Allman, Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan, he has been described as a 100 year old soul in the body of a 23 year old as he continues to baffle people with a raw sound in the 2020's. Kaspar grew up in London and moved to Hertfordshire when he was 9. He learned the guitar when he was 11 when a family friend with a serious disability gave one to him on the condition that Kaspar would learn how to play it. At the age of 12 he discovered Pride and Joy on Guitar Hero and quickly realised this was the blues. This would send him on a path of education and revelation to the blues as a genre and a life style. Kaspar went to New Orleans to celebrate turning 18 where he performed in B.B. Kings Blues Club (and was discovered by Harold Marcho music producer). Harold invited Kaspar back to the states to record his first single Sailing. He is now performing with his live band, Kaspar & The Swamp Dogs around St Albans, London and where ever he may be invited to play at. The band (usually) consists of Ian Davidson on bass or cello and Mia Casey on drums or washboard!

Reality TV juggernaut ‘The Voice’ recently rolled out its inaugural season on Channel 9 to impressive numbers. In a world populated by Idols and X Factor contestants, standing above the myriad of sounds, styles and record company restraints is a tough task. Season one winner Karise Eden immediately followed her triumph with the now standard winner’s compilation My Journey. Blessed with the rasp of the late Janis Joplin, with touches of Joss Stone and Nikka Costa, Eden’s 13 song debut is a compilation of studio performances from her triumphant run under mentor Seal’s guidance, mixed with covers of tracks that have inspired the 19 year old on her path to soul. Gifted with such a soulful, powerful set of pipes Eden belies her age and the thematic material of the songs covered here and would sound out of place without the bruised, raw delivery, which is lived, not trained. Her bluesy take on ‘Hound Dog’ is based upon the original Big Mama Thorton 1952 version and delivers the smokey bar atmosphere that enhances her performance. This feel is replicated in tracks such as the 1968 The Band classic ‘The Weight’ and Amy Winehouse’s triumphant ode to heartbreak ‘Back To Black’. Stripping back the production on a powerful rendition of Leonard Cohen’s masterpiece ‘Hallelujah’ to a single guitar and vocal is gripping, inspired and utterly breathtaking. The acoustic technique is similarly applied to a peaceful cover of Fleetwood Mac’s iconic ‘Landslide’ and reminds the listener that the sheer power of her vocal is equally matched by a worldly lament that is captivating. The two original offerings, the winner’s single ‘ You Won’t Let Me’ is Renee Geyer grit via Adele’s heartbreak and is an assured track on its own merit. ‘I Was Your Girl’ is penned by Eden and is a clear indication of the path she intends to take, a modern woman with an intriguing tale to tell through soul and blues. The honesty on display is sublime and gives hope that with the right people and time to develop her craft Eden could transcend beyond her TV accolades and become a global force to be reckoned with. Karise Eden is a deserved winner and as an introduction to her talent ‘My Journey’ is a pleasant, sometimes compelling debut, time will tell if such talent can find the original material and production to truly shine on her own.

Will Wilde picked up his first harmonica at the age of 16 and played it until his lips bled. Weaned on the likes of Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson and Buddy Guy, Wilde grew up steeped in traditional Chicago Blues yet his focus as an artist remains resolutely on the future. Wilde fuses raw blues with rock, soul and funk. He takes what's authentic and powerful about the music he grew up loving and introduces other influences without losing the heart and conviction of the blues.

Wilde made his first album when he was 19, "Nothing But Trouble", which was well reviewed in ‘Blues Matters’ and ‘Blues in Britain’. He has been four times nominated in the British Blues Awards for best Harmonica player (2010/2011/2012/2013), and he has shared the stage with various notable blues artists. He has appeared twice on the Legendary Blues Cruise playing with veterans such as Sherman Robertson, Michael Burks, Earl Thomas and Taj Mahal.

Fire in the Field - Live at La Grange

"Comprised of Mike Moore (vocals & guitar), Jeff Badolato (bass), John Santarelli (drums), and Andrew Blowen (keyboards), Exeter, New Hampshire's own indie rock outlet, Fire in the Field , have been well at the local scene for a good five years or so now, with records of their having been in operation since 2009 according to their official Facebook page. It's in 2014, though, that the band reaches their next humongous milestone: landing a debut album recorded and mastered in a professional studio: the distinctively titled Gypsy Tea Room . With special thanks to Joel Spielman of EMC Music Group and Creative Spotlights, I've managed to give a few good hearty listens to the album thus far and can say that, without a doubt, it's something special that is representative of a certain magic we've been missing on the main rock scene for quite some time. Gypsy Tea Room does impeccably well in establishing Fire in the Field as nothing short of a band of four fellows each sunken head-deep into pure, blues-drenched rock and roll hearkening back to the era of the Rolling Stones and Cream in pure unapologetic form. All of these above facts become well-established within the opening moments of Gypsy Tea Room, inundated by an infectious "down on the bayou" set of slow-building, grooving musical flourishes and overall delivery that wouldn't be out of place on the finest John Mayall outfit. Everything about this band and their debut album harks back to a legendary era of classic rock and roll that is done-up in a surprisingly genuine flair – guitar solos are back, everyone, and they're the real McCoy through and through with this group! Aside from said opening track, "Ferryboat River Ride", other standout tracks upon first listen include "Suzie" with its raw unadulterated grit and surprising Mediterranean twists, "Stone Hearted Creature" for its steel-nerved tenacity, and the eponymous "Gypsy Tea Room" in all of its 14 minutes and 29 seconds of eclectic jam band-y glory. There's hardly anything left to say here about Fire in the Field that hasn't already been said anywhere above. Give them a good listen, or fifteen, if you're well into the roots/rock era gone-by and are hankering for a revival, because these guys could very easily front that revival. Gypsy Tea Room is a masterful effort by all means, and while it won't necessarily be the tremendous breakout hit that it deserves to be, it should more than likely acquire the men behind the project more of a deserved following for the sweet tunes they produce. Rock isn't just a genre – it's a type of music that can only be exuded in its fullest form straight from the gut, infusing an intense passion with absolutely incredible talent, and Fire in the Field succeeds in emanating that attitude in a well above-average way for the modern era to behold in Gypsy Tea Room.

In many respects, England was a more hospitable home for the blues in the mid-/late-1950's than America was - where even labels such as Chicago's Chess usually limited their blues LPs to collections of singles. In England it was possible for artists such as Big Bill Broonzy, Josh White, and Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee to record entire LPs while touring. Pye/Nixa Records reissued these sides many times, but it wasn't until 2003 that the current owner of their library, Castle Communications, did a state-of-the-art digital remastering of their three classic U.K. albums, Broonzy's "Tribute to Big Bill" (1955), White's "Blues and ..." (1956), and Terry and McGhee's "Sonny, Brownie & Chris" (1958), with full annotation.

The music is a mix of virtuoso acoustic blues with some small jazz-style group accompaniment, from some top players, including Chris Barber and Phil Seamen, all of which is worth hearing and a lot of which is filled with surprises for all of us. /Bruce Eder, AllMusic
