Band of Heysek is a bunch of guys who compose and play sensuous and emotional songs. Their blues are raw and dirty.

The band was formed in 2015. All three musicians have known each other for a very long time and very well from various Brno bands. Their zero concert at the Eurotrialog festival in Mikulov was so popular that they received an invitation to the next year, but also an offer to precede the famous The Smokie in Ostrava (2015). Since then, they have given concerts in clubs and festivals, especially in the Czech Republic, but also in Poland, Bosnia and Slovakia, including the famous BluesAlive (2017).

In the autumn of 2018, they accompanied a trio of bluesmen from Mississippi on a Czech-Polish mini-tour with a stop at BluesAlive in Šumperk. In the summer of 2019, on the other hand, they headed with their concert set to their home festival in the US North Mississippi Hill Country Picnic. At the end of their blues tour, they visited the recording studio in Water Valley with two rare guests - Kenny Brown and RL Boyce (nominated in 2017 for a Grammy Award in the blues category). From the two-day recordings, the band prepared two separate albums for release, of which the first "Band Of Heysek - Juke My Joint" is out now.

A lot has happened in Kenny Brown’s life since this record, his first solo release, was issued in 1996.

Almost two decades later, he’s traveled the world, most notably as a sideman with R.L. Burnside, until R.L.’s passing in 2005, but many times since as a well-respected solo performer in his own right. He’s played on several records by other musicians, sat-in “live” with countless others, been featured in major motion pictures at least twice (“Big Bad Love” and “Black Snake Moan”) and released three more solo recordings of his own – 2003′s “Stingray” for the Fat Possum label, 2008′s “Meet Ya In The Bottom” and 2011′s “Can’t Stay Long.” For the past eight years, heading in to the ninth as I write this, he and his wife, Sara, have hosted the North Mississippi Hill Country Picnic, a two-day gathering, carrying on the musical tradition of the region and continuing to showcase the artists that Kenny has now become an elder statesman of.

This first solo release showcases not only the origins of his musical education, tracks learned from his neighbor and mentor, Joe Callicott, growing up in Nesbit, Mississippi, but also others he’s apprenticed with and learned more from over the years, such as R.L. and the late Junior Kimbrough. His love for rock n’ roll and rockabilly is also evident here, with the blazing title track “Goin’ Back To Mississippi”, later “Hold Me Baby”, and through production by the legendary Dale Hawkins, of “(Oh) Suzie-Q” / Checker fame.

Notes: This Nesbit, Mississippi native has several influences that really come through on this release. From The Rolling Stones, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Joe Ely to his collaborations with such great talents as R.L. Burnside, Joe Callicot, Junior Kimbrough and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Kenny still manages to have his own unique spin on it, to put it mildly. Actually, this release is a shining example of just how versatile Kenny and his band are at taking you to several places musically that you may have forgotten existed.            This CD represents a very important trend that needs to grow within the blues community. That is the involvement of the listener by time-tested methods mixed with personal conviction and powerful control over the material, the arrangements and the instrumentation. Kenny has managed to do all this and more by composing a few songs, using some alternate tunings, slide work, and getting a wide variety of sounds that will all fit right in your pocket. Kenny also creatively used some excellent cover material such as 'Jumper On The Line' arranged by R.L. Burnside, 'Talk About Me' by Jessie Mae Hemphill, 'Grease Monkey' by Dale Beavers, and the wonderful co-written 'In The Mood' by Junior Kimbrough and Kenny. With Dale Beavers on guitar and vocals, John Bonds on drums and Terrence Bishop on bass, Kenny leads the tight-knit combo through this musical tour-de-force on guitar and vocals as well. Recorded at Hawk's Nest in North Little Rock in the fall of `96 and engineered by Jeffery Reed, was released on first time in 1997 by Plum Tone Music. In Europe this CD was released on German label Herman's in 1999.
This CD is a classic in so many ways that it will bear repeated listening and deserves to be in any music lover's collection!
This is pure and raw. When you here this music it makes you want to get in your car and drive down to Holly Springs and party with Kenny Brown and the boys.
