Gerrit Veldman Band - Shifting Gears

Size: 286 MB
Time: 41:29
File: Flac
Released: 2025
Styles: Blues Rock
Art: Front

1. Howlin' (3:17)
2. Help Me to Remember (3:27)
3. No Chains (4:00)
4. Another Day (4:56)
5. Doin' time (2:57)
6. My Train (4:05)
7. Believe Me (4:37)
8. No Doubt (4:44)
9. Unity (5:09)
10. Foolish Game (4:13)

After two years of radio silence, Gerrit Veldman has picked up the thread again. Seasoned and experienced with a long track record and a band that sounds and sounds rock solid, he presented his album, "Shifting Gears," on October 16th at Hedon in Zwolle. Blues-rocking Netherlands needs no further introduction, I think. And for those who want to know a little more: look up the albums of The Veldman Brothers or the Prodigal Sons and enjoy. If you start the album at the beginning—and why wouldn't you?—"Howlin'" immediately delivers a wonderfully satisfying punch to the ears. Everything the band has to offer comes out in a matter of seconds. The beautiful, somewhat husky voice, Roland Bakker swinging through on the keyboards, a rhythm tandem thundering like a locomotive, and then Gerrit himself soloing away as if his life depended on it. Yuck, that's a winner. And in the next track, "Help Me To Remember," the train thunders on at full blues-rock speed. Bakker solos, Veldman pumps through, and Tenny Tahamata on bass and Mathieu van Uden on drums keep hammering away, tight and steady. Van Uden provides the intro to "No Chains" and quickly wins over with the sharp guitar sound in this blues shuffle, while Bakker continues to work his magic on the keyboard. And then the place calmed down. A gorgeous ballad called "Another Day," beautifully sung and even more beautifully on his guitar, brings back memories of Gary Moore. In "Doin' Time," the tempo picks up again, a song that definitely won't leave you sitting still. Veldman is backed vocally by the rest of the band, who sing along to the chorus "Doin' Time" with complete abandon, after which the boss himself pulls out all the stops on his guitar. Bakker also delivers on the piano in this song. Then Stevie Ray Vaughan came along, disguised as Gerrit Veldman in "My Train," good morning! This rip-roaring track is one of the highlights of this rather impressive album. It becomes truly beautiful when Bakker and Veldman alternate soloing while the other two just keep hammering away on bass and drums. Roland Bakker takes the lead in the ballad "Believe Me," a beautifully subdued moment after all the violence in "My Train." The quiet is over when "No Doubt" begins, and Veldman pounds his guitar to the bone, likely needing a new bottleneck after this song. Bakker also goes all out on his Hammond, yet another autumn storm that we're facing. In "Unity," the storm has subsided, and Veldman conjures refined guitar playing from his six strings, which transitions into ripping solos towards the end and then concludes peacefully. And then, yes, then we arrive at "Foolish Game," the closing track that pulls out all the stops once again to bring the album to a swinging close, with a brief pause halfway through, after which Veldman and Bakker pick up the swinging thread again. There you have it, a rock-solid comeback from Gerrit Veldman and his excellent band.

11. I've Been Wrong (4:12)

For Wiendelt Hooijer it was a boyhood dream: singing and playing blues harp in his own blues band. With the founding of King King Kings, which Hooijer recruited among the usual suspects of Amsterdam jam sessions, that dream became reality in 2022. Just like their Californian example, King King Kings are inspired by blues artists from the fifties and play it with a venomous dose of funk and soul. Led by producer Paul Willemsen, the band recorded the album Can’t Keep From Crying in the Electric Monkey studio in Zaandam. The album was recorded live without overdubs ('' to keep the energy going" according to the band). And the band knows its classics. Songs by Willie Dixon, Little Walter, Slim Harpo, Junior Wells, Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson and Magic Sam can be found on the album. And also on many other albums, a number of them can be found on King King, Just Your Fool was released by the Stones, I Want To Be Loved by The Hoax and Gov't Mule put Snatch it Back on Heavy Load Blues, with Warren Haynes asking his band members on the clip: You Wanna Make A Bluesrecord ?? then we'll do that. Well, the Amsterdammers wanted that last one too and it really goes off. They are big shoes to fill, but they do it with an enormous amount of energy and enthusiasm. And of course they are all fairly well-known songs, you don't have to go through them all one by one here. Instrumentally it is completely fine. The two guitarists fight out many a duel and are supported by a good rhythm section. Vocals and mouth harp are in good hands with singer Wiendelt Hooijer. Every now and then a rougher edge would do just a little bit more. A good sip of whisky or a cigar can help. His energy bursts from the album. Clips on You Tube prove that King King Kings also bring that energy live with conviction. If you get the chance and you like the music of Lester Butler c.s. go see them live.

Winner Dutch Blues Challenge 2019, category solo/duo. Robbert brings his music pure, sincere and full of passion. His voice is pure and full of surrender. By singing and playing from his heart, he makes a deep connection with his audience. In his shows as a solo artist, duo or with his band, he tells stories with a message. Sing, laugh, clap together and also wipe away a tear…music that connects and makes you feel good. This is extremely important, especially at this time! Robbert Duijf Band: Robbert's eldest son Rubin plays on double bass. He is a talented young musician who has a big heart for the blues. With a new view on the blues, he gives a fresh energy. Robin Zalm, with extensive experience as a drummer with a lot of big international bands, is a versatile drummer with a wonderful groove. Quote from Robin: “Later, when I'm over 50, I'm going to play in a blues band!” He kept his word… Gospel Blues: You recognize him and his music in this story: “The term gospel music probably originated in the 1920s. In the cotton fields, slaves were not allowed to talk to each other, but they were allowed to sing. This is how songs of hope and encouragement were created, they were enriched with rhythmic influences from the blues. Gospel music is characterized by improvised, narrative passages and extravagant expressiveness. The transfer of feelings, the singer's individuality, his courage to expose himself thanks to the recognition and support of the audience, that is what gospel blues entails in its purest form. That is also what distinguishes gospel blues from other music genres, it evokes a sense of community and provides connection.” Influences and inspiration His music is a mix of Gospel and Delta Blues with a pinch of British-American folk inspired by Charley Patton, Skip James, Willie Dixon, Blind Willie Johnson, Dave Van Ronk, John Lee Hooker and Michael de Jong.

When multiple award winner Marcel Scherpenzeel is on stage, he grabs you by the neck and won't let you go. You can't take your eyes off him for a second, afraid of missing even the smallest part of his passion and facial expressions! Meanwhile, your ears register a technical virtuoso who has no trouble exploring the dirty edges. It is an experience, an experience that you will not soon forget and that you will carry with you for the rest of your life. Marcel's performance can be so beautiful, emotional and “life-changing”! He himself indicates that when he is on stage he feels a special sensation, as if his soul is directly connected to his body. Rory Gallagher's original band also recognize Marcel's unique qualities. They asked him to come play with them. This resulted in a hugely successful European tour from 2008 to 2019. Marcel Scherpenzeel (1970), Amsterdam is a descendant of a musical family. Marcel started playing drums at the age of 10, but threw the drum sticks in the corner after his older brother gave him a guitar. The guitar quickly becomes his best friend. His father's record collection appears to be a huge inspiration for his music. The influence of John Lee Hooker, Freddie King, BB King, Albert Collins, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Rory Gallagher, Jimi Hendrix, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers and ZZ Top can unmistakably be found in Marcel's work.

Every time a performance is over, or even if they have practiced, the band members sigh: what a nice band! That is what the men of Bluesix think, but of course especially the visitors to the performance. And those are mostly loyal followers.... The band members are bursting with experience. History in Carlsberg, BobColor, the Workmates, Henkie&deHufters, White Lightnin' and so we can go on and on. These men guarantee a performance full of swinging rock songs, rocking swing numbers and steaming blues songs! The vocals are supported by glowing and howling solos of guitar, saxophone, slide guitar and keyboards. The mighty drums and growling Hofner Bass roll out the perfect basis for it. The band is rock solid! Songs by Dion, FabThunderbirds, Ray Charles, Allman Brothers, Muddy Waters to name a few. But also the roots, the traditionals are not forgotten! And all of that is brought with that unique Bluesix sound. Memorable performances where the musicians go crazy over the bar, in the hall and on the back of the audience are countless. In Bluesix, Jan Stobbe thrashes the drums, Willem Visser plucks the bass, Henk Schippers howls on his guitar, Bert Baars bops on his sax and keyboards and Dick Huisman sings like Howling Wolf in his prime.

As a guitarist/composer in, among others, the “Twelve Bar Blues Band” and his own “Blues Forever Project”, he has also established his name in the Dutch blues scene. The Kees Dusink Blues Band is mainly inspired by the British and Chicago blues guitarists of the sixties and seventies. Think of Peter Green, Eric Clapton, Albert Collins, Otis Rush and Buddy Guy. Marc Bocken is the singer of the band and known from the Antones and Stax Cats. Marc is an excellent soul singer, but proves in this band that the blues have no secrets for him. The rhythm section consists of two experienced hands in the business. Drummer Frans Ogiér already played with Kees in the acclaimed “Blues Forever Project” with which Dusink & co released a great instrumental CD (Forever Blue) in 2015. Bassist Patrick “sideburn” Obrist played for years with Kees in the aforementioned “Twelve Bar Blues Band”. We already know rhythm guitarist Bas Mali from the “Blues Forever Project”. In the end, Kees has put together a unique band in which emotion, friendship and musicality predominate. A "must" for the true blues lover. Bas Paardekooper & The Blew Crue has gradually become a household name in the Dutch 'blues (rock) scene' and contacts are also made with other countries in a modest way. There is even interest from America for the album 'Broken Hearts for Sale', released in December, and the band also sees the number of spectators increasing at each performance in Belgium. Out of no less than 34!!! For registrations, Paardekooper and Crue has been selected by the Dutch Blues Foundation to compete against seven other participants in Nieuw-Vennep on Sunday 6 October. In addition to a place on the Moulin Blues programming, the winner will receive a ticket for the International Blues Challenge in Memphis… Enough reason for Blues Magazine to visit the band in the headquarters where weekly rehearsals take place and current affairs are discussed. This time it is not only the singer/guitarist that we put to the test, but we also involve 'The Crue' in the conversation. It becomes clear that the trio appears to have a greater contribution than we initially suspected…

Before his performance at the Brezoi Open Air Blues Festival in July 2019, Oscar Benton asks how long he is expected to play. “As long as you want!” responds the organizer. The Dutch blues singer is not just any artist in Romania; he is a star. Benton hasn't traveled the twenty-five yards from his car to the backstage caravan when he's already being ambushed. People who want to take a picture with him. People with piles of CDs and LPs to get signed. Records that many Dutch pop and rock fans did not know they had ever been released. At least one million copies of Bensonhurst Blues must have been sold. Benton himself likes to talk about 'tens of millions' in his enthusiasm. In any case, after 1981, the singer never needed a regular job again. "To work? I wouldn't even know how to write that."

Harlem Lake - A Fools Paradise

Size: 88,1 MB - 240,6 MB

Styles: blues, rock, southern rock, Americana
Art: Front

2. A Fool's Paradise (6:41)
3. The River (4:26)
4. Guide Me Home (5:05)

6. My Turn To Learn (2:59)
7. I Won't Complain (5:26)
8. I Wish I Could Go Running (4:35)

"Undutch good," program maker Johan Derksen typifies the band Harlem Lake around keyboardist Dave Warmerdam, guitarist Sonny Ray and singer Janne Timmer. You can find anything from the Oracle from Grolloo, but the mustache does have a point here. By the way, never judge a book by it's cover, Derksen has encyclopedic knowledge about blues. Plus, Harlem Lake was Walter Trout's support act, which is possibly an even better recommendation. Well, what can you add to the blues? The genre was at the cradle of rock 'n roll, R&B and our contemporary pop music. So it doesn't have to sound different or innovative at all. Authentic, that's what we want. And that fits perfectly with the band from the Haarlemmer Meer. Voila, hence the name. The trio is assured of a solid backbone in the person of bassist Kjelt Ostendof and drummer Benjamin Torbijn. The quintet opens full throttle with the beecher Deaf & Blind, on which singer Timmer can immediately pull out all the stops. It is followed by the ballad A Fool's Paradise that calmly moves towards seven minutes without getting bored for a moment. The River comes in extra hard. The hearty track is an instant classic that will stand the test of time with ease. It's a well-executed showcase of how well blues, southern rock and americana do in the mix. With Guide Me Home we find the second ballad of the album. On this Timmer sounds more subdued and more fragile. If this were an audition for the Best Singers program, she would have passed immediately. With Please Watch My Bag, the pattern is broken hard-soft-hard. It is not a ballad, but a relatively quiet song that clocks in at almost six minutes, partly due to a number of typical blues solos that are reminiscent of the late Rory Gallagher. Via My Turn, which is again a successful cross-pollination of southern rock and blues, we arrive at the bluesy americana of I Won't Complain. And that also applies to me, because it is absolutely no punishment to listen to this album several times for this review. Finalist I Wish I Could Go Running is unadulterated blues rock. The fact that the band prefers to act as a 12-piece band with horns, backing singers and extra guitars and percussion makes you long for a live performance. I am also already looking forward to the sequel to this rock-solid debut, because the addition is full. 1 naturally suggests that there is more to this young blues band.

Veldman Brothers - 5th Anniversary Live Tour

Art: Front, tray

1. Harponized ( 2:47)

3. Wathin all night ( 4:05)

9. Bleeding hart ( 9:38)
10. Who Knows (12:07)

The Veldman Brothers is a close band around Gerrit and Bennie Veldman. Gerrit on guitar, Bennie on hammond and blues harp, Marco Overkamp on drums and Donald van der Goes on bass. Four fine musicians with a wealth of experience influenced by their old heroes of yesteryear such as: The Vaughan Brothers, Muddy Waters, Jimi Hendrix, Elmore James, Howlin' Wolf and the Fabulous Thunderbirds. These gentlemen have now been together for 5 years, which is celebrated with the release of a great live release. The album is very varied and consists of swing blues, delta blues and blues with a rock edge. The first 2 tracks are rocking and almost forces the listener to get out of the chair. The hammond and guitar splash violently and are of a very good level. We encounter the rockie edge during the song 'Waitin' All Night'. Then the Willie Dixon song, however, in the manner of The Veldman Brothers. As one of the highlights we note the ode to old heroes in 'All Those People', beautiful guitar playing! With the Ray Charles cover, track 5, it switches back to a swinging song. Then the song 'This Pain' which could give many goosebumps. With the last 3 tracks, all covers, we get to hear a wonderful ending to this release. An album that could become one of the top releases from Dutch soil. Assuming that the same energy and passion can be heard during the performances as on this CD, we can only recommend that you go and see this band live.

Every show is different, even the song interpretations On top he has the gift of writing and getting hooky song-inspirations within minutes even at a gig. He retrieves his powers by enjoying nature together with charming singer and partner in crime Monique Anderson. He even continues to find the fervor for painting. His early and continuing love to the good ole sheiks of blues & rock’n- rollas, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, JerryLee Lewis, Harry Muskee and off course The Rolling Stones will be his everlasting love and inspiration. When all the old masters will jam heavenly at one time he will continue their earthly musical heritage.

Jeroen van Tuijl, the lead vocalist and guitarist, discovered his love for the guitar more then 30 years ago. After playing a lot of covers with various bands and being influenced by his favorite rock and blues music, Jeroen was inspired to compose his own music. In addition he also writes his own lyrics. This all resulted in forming the JvT band, together with Claudio on bass and Rene on drums. These 3 passionate musicians play Jeroens music with a heart, coming out of their souls.
