Extraordinary Times (The Duo Sessions) 2020 will go down in history because of the wide-ranging impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mankind. Natural Blues also suffered greatly from this situation. And not only because concerts did not take place due to the lockdown, the current production of this German-Austrian band was also affected by a border closure lasting several weeks. However, with patience and perseverance it was possible to record and produce this EP.

The Natural Blues Duo Norbert Egger (Vocals & Guitars) & Alex Meik (Double Bass, E-Bass & Vocals) - along with their guests - addresses these “EXTRAORDINARY TIMES” in their music. The dramatic global effects of the Corona pandemic, the existential threat for artists, increasing racism culminating in multiple racist murders, the fateful elections, and the shameful behaviour of the outvoted Donald J. Trump were a motivation and provided themes for these songs.

The duo’s music on this “disc” ranges widely, from classical “unplugged” Country and Delta Blues to the street band style of Chicago’s Maxwell Street to modern Blues Rock. And as if this rich variety were not enough for one EP, it is enriched even more by the contributions of the two guest musicians, Hubert Hofherr (Blues Harp) and Michael Alf (Piano)! The lyrics are diverse - the song texts cover political issues, classical Blues lyrics, and love songs.

Whether live or via studio production: you shouldn’t miss out on hearing the Natural Blues Duo Norbert Egger & Alex Meik. Natural Blues is the Blues formation created in Hamburg by Norbert Egger (guitar and vocals) in 1982. Initially intended as a “side project”, with its incredibly diverse power Blues and extravagant show, the band evolved to become a main act.

After the death of the founding member and outstanding Blues harp player Heiko Petcke in 2017, Norbert Egger re-formed and expanded the band. At the new formation, Alex Meik (double bass), Hubert Hofherr (Blues harp), and Stefan Schubert (guitar and vocals) joined the band. Blues from all eras of its history is presented, from the earliest country blues on acoustic instruments to the Blues of the 1920s, Mississippi Delta Blues, Chicago Blues and current Blues Rock. As live act, Natural Blues offers an extraordinary stage performance: it is captivating and entertaining, when band leader Norbert Egger throws his jacket across the stage, letting his slide guitar scream while sliding on his knees or lying on the floor, Hubert Hofherr is doing his magic with the Blues harp, Stefan Schubert conjures up his brilliant solos on the parquet, or the whole band involves the audience as a huge background choir.

Natural Blues is elemental primal power, music and a show really worth listening to, captivating any audience!

Norbert Egger (born October 14, 1956 in Rielasingen) is a German blues musician , author, radio host and entrepreneur.

In 1968, Egger heard recordings of BB King and Muddy Waters on the radio. This experience and reading a book by Nat Hentoff about blues and jazz as well as the contributions of the music journalist Joachim-Ernst Berendt inspired him for the blues. He bought a blues harp and a guitar and taught himself to play. After graduating from high school in Singen (1975), he was a regular soldier in the Bundeswehr until 1981, ultimately with the rank of officer.

In 1979 Norbert Egger co-founded the band City Blues Connection in Hamburg, which he considers his main musical project. In this formation he acts as lead singer and slide guitarist. He gave many club concerts with her in the 1980s, for example at Onkel Pö and appeared at festivals, including Tanz auf dem Vulkan, a music event organized by the anti-nuclear movement in Gorleben with 10,000 visitors. The German Blues Circle, an important music medium for blues in Germany at the time, had already praised Egger's playing of the slide guitar as a leader in Germany a year earlier. As leader of this band, he released six albums - one with Louisiana Red - and one double album between 1979 and 2019, as well as several EPs and singles. Since 1982 he has also been the creator of the side project Natural Blues, which released two albums in 2021. Some EPs are added.

Between 1985 and 2015 Egger appeared only sporadically. He cited personal setbacks as the reason for this. These included the theft of instruments and equipment from his mobile recording studio or conflicts with insurers, music managers and music producers.

From 2015, musical activities increased again. Egger rehearsed and performed again with City Blues Connection, which he expanded into a Rhythm and Blues Big Band of around 20 musicians.

The musician, composer, producer, author and entrepreneur was born in 1956 in Rielasingen (Southern Germany). After early musical education in the village music of his birthplace, Norbert started to play the slide guitar when he was only aged 12.

In 1979, he founded the City Blues Connection in Hamburg and became a professional musician in 1980. His second album Bluesin’n’Boogin’, which was published the same year, received significant attention and appreciation in the German Blues scene – explicitly also due to the slide guitar of the band leader. Two years later, Norbert Egger and Blues Harp player Heiko Petcke founded Natural Blues.

In 1984 he released his third LP I Do Not Play No Rock’n’Roll which was far ahead of its time in respect of sound and arrangements in the Blues genre. Most of the titles on the album were composed and arranged by Norbert Egger and manifested the distinctive sound which he had already developed. In the following year World On Fire, the album recorded with Louisiana Red, appeared, later reissued in 2017 in a remastered version.

During the two decades around the millennium, Norbert Egger played at just a few concerts in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and had individual recording sessions in Switzerland and Spain from which until now only a few recordings have been released on compilation BGD Rock City Vol. 1 and the City Blues Connection anniversary double album 40 Years. 1979-2019.

In 2015 Norbert began to rigorously implementing the Rhythm & Blues Big Band concept, which had been one of his artistic ideas since the 1980s. The premiere of the programme City Blues Connection – The Rhythm & Blues Big Band was finally held in October 2016.

After the death of Natural Blues founding member Heiko Petcke in 2017, the band leader began to reform Natural Blues. His Rhythm & Blues Big Band album Anna Liza was released in 2018 which received over 100 rave reviews and has todate been played several thousand times on dozens of radio stations.

In 2018, after Natural Blues had been reformed, the production of their first EP Shame On You, Mr. Trump which was released in May 2019, began. The EP was enthusiastically received from its first presentation while appearing as a support act for Jethro Tull.

As of now, two of the Natural Blues EP’s songs have held first place in the Central European Blues charts for 13 weeks. Released the same year, the City Blues Connection double album 40 Years. 1979-2019 also achieved great chart success as well as outstanding reviews: songs from the double album reached fourth place in the Northern German pop charts, third place in the Central European Bluestime Spotify Blues Charts as of the date of this release and, as of today, have held first place in the Central European Blues Charts for a total of nine weeks. The song Mr. President from the Natural Blues Elementary Power album is up today more than seven months in top 5 of Central European Bluestime Spotify Blues Charts. Song Tough Times help position 4 in the same charts since more than eight months.

Natural Blues Album Elementary Power (released January 2021) received great reviews in a big number of music magazines and radio shows.

The Norbert Egger & His Natural Blues Album I Am Not Don Quixote is released by August 25 2021.

Natural Blues is the Blues formation created in Hamburg by Norbert Egger in 1982. At that time, the 1979 founded band City Blues Connection has been the main project with up to 20 concerts a month. Initially Natural Blues has been intended as a “side project”, but with its incredibly diverse Power Blues and extravagant show, the band evolved to become a main act.

After the death of the founding member and outstanding Blues harp player Heiko Petcke in 2017, Norbert Egger reformed and expanded the band. At the new formation, Alex Meik (double bass), Hubert Hofherr (Blues harp), and Stefan Schubert (guitar and vocals) joined the band.

In 2019, Natural Blues published the first EP Shame On You, Mr. Trump with committed lyrics according to the politics of the 45th president of the United States, Donald J. Trump. This first release has been very successful: the music has been played by many radio stations around the world. Two songs of this EP established themselves for almost 18 months in the Bluestime Blues Charts, reached #1 and held the top position for more than nine weeks. Dozens of very good reviews in music magazines and radio shows completed the successful publication. The same year, Natural Blues had also a big number of very successful concerts, too. In good memory are, for example, the concerts at Rockhouse Salzburg and as support act for Jethro Tull, where they wowed the audience!

Due to Corona restrictions in 2020 only few concerts took place. But the band made good use of the time by producing another two EP’s.

EP I Can’t Breathe included mainly tough electric Chicago Blues and Blues Rock, matching the committed lyrics against racism and police violence. On second EP Extraordinary Times a musical journey from the Mississippi delta to Chicago is to be heard: the songs are varying from delta style with Dobro and double bass to modern electric Chicago Blues performed with the typical setup with amplified Blues harp, electric guitars, electric bass and drums. Concerts and releases are demonstrating:

Natural Blues is elemental primal power, music and a show really worth listening to, captivating any audience!
