Let me state right up front that this CD is one of the best that I have heard in a long while. Featuring three well known West Coast blues players, The Down Home Super Trio plays blues the old fashioned way. This was Mischo's first album after his move from Minneapolis to San Francisco, and his fifth overall. It's a nice mix of seven originals and eight covers, with two instrumentals. Mischo is one heck of a harp player, a good singer, and an especially proficient songwriter. Obviously the other musicians on the CD agree or you wouldn't see their names on the bill. They include first-call guitarists Rusty Zinn and Steve Freund (who relocated to California in 1994 after playing almost 20 years with several Chicago masters). Although not a live recording, West Wind Blowin' has that sound. When you're listening to it, you feel like you've just walked out of a jumpin' club (sans crowd noise). The only exceptions to this are "R. J. Getup! Milk That Cow!," with just Mischo on harp and spoken word and Randy Bermudes on stand-up bass; and the closer, "South City Fog," a slow, moody instrumental showcasing Mischo's forlorn-sounding, chromatic harp playing. The best tracks are the straight up Chicago originals "What I Got to Have," the swingin' Sonny Boy Williamson tribute "Goat Whiskers," and Junior Wells' "It's My Life Baby." Not only a strong effort by Mischo, West Wind Blowin' is one of Zinn's best performances. Be sure to check out his Sammy Lawhorn vibrato on "Jelly Sellin' Woman."

RJ Mischo has been dropping blues records and discs since the 90s and his latest is out right now. The new release was captured ‘live’ in Studio late, last year at Suprovox Analog Recording in Karkkila, Finland. That certainly comes as no surprise when you consider RJ’s popularity and fan base in Scandinavia and throughout Europe is just as wide-ranging as it is across the U.S.

Mischo’s style of play has that rich, Chicago blues tone with an uptempo West Coast swing. It’s the type of music that forces you to get up and get on your feet. And what’s really interesting, you can almost hear his influences in his playing. From ‘Mojo’ Buford and Lynwood Slim to Rod Piazza and Kim Wilson; Mischo’s sound has that feel of the familiar but with added bends and phrasing that create the unexpected. How does that even happen? “I’m a very spontaneous musician,” RJ says. “And I work with so many pick up bands, that all shows are one of a kind, I can’t repeat myself even if I try.”

The new CD has 12 tracks, eleven of which are Mischo originals and one track ‘She Got Next to Me’ in homage to the late Sonny Boy Williamson II. “The one Sonny Boy cover has no real significance.” RJ shares. “Other than Sonny Boy is one of my major influences and I usually cut at least one of his tunes on every CD project.” That tradition continues even if you are recording in Finland. “What happened here is after we cut all my originals, then we just jammed out for some tunes off the cuff and that one made it, but actually I had no plan in advance to do that tune.”

The Blues are truly a universal language and RJ reinforces this by putting together a very tight and extremely talented rhythm section. “The Finnish band on this CD is the Tomi Leino Trio, I’ve known and have toured in Europe many times so we have great chemistry, we have never rehearsed… and those guys can play! I love ’em!” The band includes Tomi Leino and Jonne Kulluvaara on guitars, Jaska Prepula on bass and Mikko Peltola on drums.

Whether you like shuffles, slow blues or uptempo boogies; ‘In Finland’ offers up a little taste for everyone. Early on, guitarist Teddy Morgan joined the James Harman Band, causing a few hundred barstool critics to put down their Shiner Bocks long enough to check him out. Though barely 19 years old (at the time), Morgan was a pure, blazing, retro, blues star. Harman, it seemed, had pulled yet another rabbit out of his hat. Actually, that "hat" was the vibrant blues scene in Minneapolis, where Morgan joined up with R.J. Mischo.

"Ready To Go!" is a fun blend of Mischo's Little Walter-style harmonica, Strother's all-Chicago vocals (he does killer versions of Muddy Waters' "Forty Days" and Howling Wolf's "Evil") and Morgan's T-Bone Walker-meets-Magic Sam guitar. Be aware that this disc captures Morgan in his full-tilt retro phase. It absolutely smokes!

Singer/Harmonica player R.J. Mischo began his music career over 20 years ago in Minneapolis. He worked with the area’s legends of the Blues scene like Muddy Waters alumni Mojo Buford and Sonny Rogers, as well as Percy Strothers and Milwaukee Slim. R.J. then ledhis own groupsand gained a reputation as one of the region’s top acts.

During his tenure in Minneapolis, R.J. was nominated in several categories by the Minnesota Music Academy and in 1996 won the award for Best Harmonica Player. His stage presence is that of a kindred spirit that likes to have a ball and everyone on stage better be having one too!! Gotta love that voice but his harp playin’ is just the best. RJ Mischo funnels everyday life and personal experiences through his harp and vocals, and what pours out is the hot-blooded passion, the playful humor and high voltage energy of the blues. R.J. was introduced to audiences worldwide when he & guitarist Teddy Morgan formed the RJ & Kid Morgan Blues Band featuring Percy Strother. In 1992 they released Ready To Go on the W. C. Handy award winning Blue Loon Records. 1994 brought the critically acclaimed Gonna Rock Tonight also on Blue Loon Records.

After several successful tours of Europe, RJ recorded 2 CD’s, Rough ‘N” Tough in 1996 and Cool Disposition in 1997 on the prestigious German labelCrosscut Records. In 1998 R.J. Mischo and His Red Hot Blues Band moved to San Francisco , California. As well as performing regularly in the Bay area, the Band also tours extensively throughout the United States and Europe. R.J. has appeared on some of the world’s biggest Blues events. R.J.’s 1999 release, West Wind Blowin’ , features 15 songs & guest appearances by Rusty Zinn & Steve Freund. Two years later R.J. release Meet Me On The Coast again for Crooscut Records. R.J. is also part of the Down Home Super Trio, they recently release a live recording made at the famous Luzerne Blues Festival who follow late in 2006 his new album He Came To Play. In the spring of 2008 he produced another well acclamated CD King of a Mighty Good Time. R.J. Mischo is without doubt one ofthe highest-regarded contemporary masters of the harmonica. He plays the instrument with power and deep passion, and he’s a fine vocalist with a style of his own. Since Mischo discovered the raw charm of the fifties quite early for himself and concentrated on getting this feeling and keeping it going, he plays and lives these blues as an extremely vital and powerful tradition.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, June is a self-taught musician. He got his first paying gig at 17 after only playing for a year. Over the next few years June gigged in and around Cleveland with organist Eddie Baccus and with various funk, jazz and soul groups. In 1978 June was introduced to Robert Lockwood Jr. and Johnny Shines. Eddie Baccus suggested that Robert use June for an upcoming tour. Lockwood reluctantly agreed to hire an unproven drummer and, consequently, the band was fired after the first week because June insisted on playing funk grooves over blues. The club owner recognized talent however, and allowed the band to practice in a broom closet. Robert and Johnny taught June, in one day, five different shuffles to use in any blues. “That was start of my career”, says June. Robert and Johnny Shines became June’s second father’s and June’s musical relationship with Lockwood lasted nearly ten years. In 1980, June moved to New York and played pickups with jazz and funk bands doing the club circuit that included The Bitter End, Lonestar Café, and Freddies Café. In 1982, June returned to Cleveland. As a result of his relationship with Robert Lockwood, June shared the stage with BB King, James Cotton, Mighty Joe Young, Willie Dixon, and Albert Collins.

In 1987 June headed west to San Jose, California. Shortly thereafter, he was hired by Mark Hummel, a stint that lasted two years. He soon met Andy Santana and the West Coast Playboys and then, along with Andy and Mike Schermer, founded the Soul Drivers, a highly successful Santa Cruz based blues band. In 1991, The Soul Drivers became Angela Stehli’s backup band. June also worked as a side man for Miss Laverne Baker. In 1996 June was asked to join Little Charlie and the Nightcats and spent five years touring with that band. Throughout the next few years June played with various west coast based bands such as Terry Hanck and Mighty-Mike Schermer. In 2004 Charlie Musselwhite hired June and has been touring with him since.

His 1992 album with that band, Ready to Go, won praises far and near and still has an unmatched magic about it. Mischo was nominated for several Minnesota Music Academy Awards while in Minneapolis, and in 1996, he won the award for Best Harmonica Player.

Paul Halperin was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. And although there are certainly many bands that move in this element, very few succeed in sounding so authentic. There's no doubt that the breeding ground for this sound was created by the active scene in Minneapolis. Personnel encounters with Muddy Waters and Mojo Buford made it possible and provided the background for talents like R.J. Mischo to grow and develop. Since Mischo discovered the raw charm of the fifties blues quite early for himself and concentrated on getting this feeling and keeping it going. He plays and lives these blues as an extremely vital and powerful tradition.
