Spanning performances from 1978 through 2024, the album celebrates more than five decades of relentless touring and high-energy blues rock. The collection brings together crowd favorites like “Who Do You Love,” “Bad to the Bone,” and “Move It on Over,” alongside a wealth of previously unreleased material, offering a raw and authentic snapshot of the band’s legendary stage presence.

Formed in 1973, George Thorogood & The Destroyers built their reputation the hard way - on stage. From early club gigs in the Northeast to more than 8,000 performances worldwide, the band has remained one of the most consistent forces in blues-based rock. John Lee Hooker was one of the greatest figures to rise from post-war blues, but he always stood out from other artists in the genre. The minimalism of his style drew a clear line from the pioneering figures of Delta blues, but the hypnotic insistence of his song structures and the unrelenting stomp of his boogie rhythms took those influences to another time and place. Hooker's music could speak of joy or menace with equal force, and with remarkably few changes. And while 12-bar was the unyielding template for nearly every other blues artist, Hooker followed no rules beyond his own muse, embracing rhythmic structures and chord changes that seemed chaotic on paper but sounded brilliant when executed by Hooker. While clearly a bluesman, he was a subgenre unto himself, a musician with a singular approach that many followed but no one could duplicate with the same gravity. In addition to being unique, Hooker was also prolific, recording literally dozens of albums for many different labels in a career that stretched from 1948 to 1997, and compiling a set that accurately represents the length and breadth of his catalog is no simple task. 2017's King of the Boogie is a five-disc set compiled with the cooperation of Hooker's estate and attempts to skim the cream from his massive body of work. The first three discs comprise a (relatively) concise summary of his studio material, while disc four is devoted to live recordings, and disc five is a sampler of his collaborations with other artists, which dominated many of his latter-day albums. Given the very distinct stages of Hooker's career -- his early acoustic sides, his later electric material, his evolution into working with a full band, and the polished, star-sprinkled late period sides -- it's very much a matter of the taste of individual fans that will determine how much they like the three-disc career summary. That said, the track selection delivers most of the acknowledged classics, offers an accurate balance of the various phases of his career, and throws in a few surprises ("Shake, Holler and Run" takes an obvious "Shake, Rattle and Roll" lift and turns it into something very much its own once Hooker is done with it). The live tracks demonstrate his strength and charisma as a live performer, and if the duets are not for many Hooker purists, the fact artists as gifted as Carlos Santana, Bonnie Raitt, B.B. King, and Los Lobos were eager to work with him speaks volumes about how respected he was. It's probably impossible to assemble a truly definitive John Lee Hooker collection, but King of the Boogie leaves no doubt of his talent, his unique vision, and the lasting importance of his music. Add a well-designed package with plenty of rare photos, fine liner notes from Jas Obrecht, and well-detailed track annotation, and you have a splendid sampler that should please loyal fans and dazzle those who have never been introduced to Hooker's music. ~by Mark Deming

Guitar great George Thorogood is stepping out from his legendary band the Destroyers for the first time with a new solo album, Party of One.

Responsible for a string of gritty rock hits including “Bad to the Bone,” “I Drink Alone,” and “Reelin’ and Rockin’,” Thorogood’s latest will feature 14 blues tracks that range from old school traditional—John Lee Hooker’s “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer,” and Hank Williams’ “Pictures From Life’s Other Side”—to modern classics like the Rolling Stones‘ “No Expectations.”
Party of One reunites Thorogood with his longtime producer Jim Gaines, the multi-Grammy winner who worked on several of Thorogood’s biggest albums to date, including Ride ‘Til I Die, The Hard Stuff and The Dirty Dozen. While Gaines handles the production, Thorogood himself performs all of the instruments on the acoustic-tinged album, imbuing it with an intimate one-on-one feel.
“I think this is a project that’s long overdue,” Thorogood says in a statement. “Maybe it should have been the very first album I ever made. After playing with the band for all these years, I had to kind of reverse my hands and my head in order to do this thing justice. But I think Destroyers fans – and hardcore blues fans, too – are ready for the unexpected. My whole career, I’ve always said, ‘Just give them what you are, and they’re either going to dig it or not.’ This record is what I was, what I am, and what I always will be.”

Various - The Rounder Records Story (4-Disc Boxset)

This four-disc, 87-track retrospective covers the first four decades of one of the most successful "folk" labels in history. Co-founders/owners Ken Irwin, Marian Leighton Levy, and Bill Nowlin assembled a collection that showcases -- one disc per decade -- how deeply entrenched the label was in the 1970s in exposing various forms of folk music from traditional to emergent ones, and how its focus expanded. Disc one includes tracks by newgrass outfit J.D. Crowe & the New South, outsider songwriter Michael Hurley, banjoist Ola Belle Reed, Appalachian traditionalists Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerrard, and ace superpicker Norman Blake and the Cajun sounds of D.L Menard & the Louisiana Aces. It also reveals the label's first big directional shakeup by including George Thorogood & the Delaware Destroyers' scorching read of Bo Diddley's "Who Do You Love." The '80s reflect a wider reach still, with tracks by soulman Ted Hawkins, the Klezmer Conservatory Band, polka revisionists Brave Combo, country songwriter Keith Whitley, and blues artists Rory Block and Johnny Copeland. There's also a deeper step into Louisiana traditions with music by Professor Longhair, James Booker, and Buckwheat Zydeco included, too. This decade also signaled the arrival of Nanci Griffith on Rounder's Philo imprint. In the '90s, Rounder's profile was enhanced by the arrival of bluegrass queen Alison Krauss, who has been a best-selling artist for them ever since. There were more singer/songwriter types on the imprint too, such as Bill Morrissey, Tish Hinojosa, and Jimmie Dale Gilmore; more modern electric blues and R&B talents were showcased too in Marcia Ball, Irma Thomas, Tracy Nelson, Ruth Brown, Johnny Adams, and Wilson Pickett; and the label still held traditional sway with bluegrass mainstay Krauss and uber-tradtionalist James King. The first decade of the new century reveals Rounder's wide range in embracing everything they felt they could sell: from Americana-drenched rock acts such as Son Volt and the Cowboy Junkies to uber-rockers Rush; the vanguard pop of They Might Be Giants and jazzy chanteuse Madeleine Peyroux; to British folk maven Linda Thompson, as well as experimental projects like the Grammy-winning Raising Sand by Robert Plant and Krauss. Country-pop legend and stalwart Willie Nelson also recorded for them. But no matter their genre extensions, bluegrass is still part of Rounder's mix, as cuts by Dailey & Vincent, Rhonda Vincent, and Blue Highway attest. It's impressive to be sure. That said, despite the range of music here and the fine historical essay by Geoffrey Himes, two chapters are missing: a disc that focuses on their vast licensing of traditional music, and the essential collection of tracks by American songwriting icons such as Tom Russell, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Guy Clark, rockabilly queen Rosie Flores, and R&B legend Eddie Hinton, most of whom recorded multiple albums for the label and its subsidiaries. Here's hoping Rounder will consider a second collection to showcase these lesser-selling projects from essential artists who are an indelible part of its story. ~Thom Jurek

That was not what George Thorogood & The Destroyers expected from their Rockpalast show on 26th November 1980 at Westfalenhalle in Dortmund. Starting with the third song of the concert, the Willie Dixon tune I'm Wanted, the audience - having been rather reserved at first - was asked by the American singer and guitarist to participate. The space in front of the stage was empty, so Thorogood wanted to motivate the crowd to get up and dance. Some fans followed his invitation, so that at the end of the regular show there was quite a party. With the encore then the whole thing went a little astray, when our sax player Hank Carter announced in broken German that we would like to see more dancers. But when Carter said: ,Kommen Sie hierher, kommen Sie!' the people thought they should get on the stage., Thorogood smirks about this small misunderstanding. There was quite a scramble between the musicians ending in a chaotic but peaceful stage happening. It wasn't exactly what we were looking for, but we went with it and had a great time! George Thorogood & The Destroyers were founded 1973 in Wilmington, Delaware, USA. The Satan of Slide, as the adept guitarist was called by the international press because of his superb skills with the bottleneck, mixes urban blues, rock 'n' roll and rhythm & blues in his play. He developed a program with songs of prestigious role models like Elmore James, John Lee Hooker, Bo Diddley or Chuck Berry. If you want to hear a slide guitar as it was intended by its inventor, with Thorogood you are on the right track, an American critic certified, and his colleagues agreed that Thorogood needs to be mentioned in the same breath with Johnny Winter or Rory Gallagher.

Vintage Thorogood, which is to say a defiantly unsubtle, unabashedly party-hearty serving of Chicago blues (a convincing version of Howlin' Wolf' "Highway 49"), rockabilly (a smart revamp of Chuck Berry's "You Can't Catch Me"), '60s R&B (Roy Head's horn-driven "Treat Her Right"), country (Hank Snow's often covered "I'm Movin' On"), and self-mythologizing (the title tune, which is rather more overtly ironic than his earlier "Bad to the Bone"). Thorogood also offers a sharp take on Elmore James's "Shake Your Money Maker," which may or may not erase memories of the Butterfield Band's version but which smokes nonetheless. And his guitar work rises to the occasion and then some on a scorching recreation of Wolf's perennial "Smokestack Lighting." ~AllMusic

The raw version of the album, which initially was issued as a limited-edition vinyl LP in April as part of the 2015 Record Store Day event, features tracks from the 1975 sessions the veteran blues-rocker made with an early Delaware Destroyers lineup before bassist Bill Blough joined the group and later was overdubbed onto the recordings. Many of George's fans likely will enjoy the early version of the record, which features just Thorogood, drummer Jeff Simon and former Delaware Destroyers guitarist Ron Smith. Adding to the raw feel of the album are snippets of studio banter that appear between tracks. George Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers features a number a classic Thorogood tracks, including his covers of John Lee Hooker's "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer," Bo Diddley's "Ride On Josephine" and Elmore James' "Madison Blues." The reissue also offers a previously unreleased version of another James tune, "Goodbye Baby."

An aspect of the reissue that Thorogood says he is particularly happy about is the cover photo, which is the one he wanted to appear on the original version of the album but was rejected by the record label. George says the pic, a shadowy image of him playing guitar, reminds him of cool debut albums by other artists he respects, like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. "It kind of looks like Mick Jagger playing a guitar," he says of the reissue cover photo. "I said, 'Well, that's who I am. That's what I do. That's my thing. You take [the Rolling Stones album] December's Children and you throw in 'Bad to the Bone' and that's me."

2013 live release from the Blues Rock guitarist. George Thorogood is an American icon. In a career that stretches back to the mid-70's, he and his band The Destroyers have released 16 studio albums with worldwide sales in excess of 15 million. 2013 saw George & The Destroyers make their long-overdue debut at the legendary Montreux Jazz Festival. Performing at an event that had previously played host to many of their musical heroes inspired the band to produce one of their finest performances on a set list that stretched back to their 1977 debut album right up to recent releases.
