Legendary Wet Willie frontman Jimmy Hall shows he’s still got the goods and then some on his new solo album Ready Now.
Set to drop on September 16th, 2022 on Joe Bonamassa’s KTBA Records, the record features vocalist/saxophonist/harmonica man Jimmy Hall throwing down on 11 new tracks done with his signature blend of old-school R&B and Southern Rock. Co-produced by Bonamassa and Josh Smith, the album was recorded with an absolutely stomping all-star band featuring Bonamassa and Smith on guitar, keyboardist Reese Wynans (Stevie Ray Vaughan), bassist Michael Rhodes, and drummer Greg Morrow.

As if that weren’t enough, guitar monsters Warren Haynes and Jared James Nichols each make guest appearances that crank the level of play up even higher. Hall remains in fine voice throughout these sessions and still displays the strutting confidence that led him to stardom.

Jimmy Hall first became famous as the lead vocalist, saxophonist, and harmonica player for the Alabama band Wet Willie, an excellent outfit that cracked the Billboard Top Ten Singles Chart with the song “Keep on Smilin’” in 1974. Wet Willie made seven albums for Capricorn Records before moving to Epic Records. The group’s successful run continued there. They put two more singles into the US Top 40 and five additional songs made it into the Billboard Top 100.

Hall’s original songs have also been recorded by major artists including Gregg Allman, Jason Isbell, The Marshall Tucker Band, Blackberry Smoke, The Amazing Rhythm Aces, and Johnny Russell. Jimmy has also been Hank Williams Jr. ‘s bandleader and vocalist since 1992. In addition, he has worked extensively with guitar legend Jeff Beck, earning a Grammy nomination with him in 1986. If he hasn’t impressed you yet, Hall also won a Grammy Award as a guest artist on the Fisk Jubilee Singer`s Celebrating Fisk! in the Best Roots Gospel category with his rendition of the Hank Williams’ classic “I Saw The Light.”

Ready Now kicks off with the upbeat and celebratory “Jumpin’ For Joy.” Hall co-wrote the track with Joe Bonamassa and their collaboration was a smashing success. It begins with a crisp, Chuck Berry-informed groove but starts to sound more gospel as it gains momentum. Hall is fully activated on the vocal mic, giving out a sense of pure happiness that feels genuine and spreads quickly. Bonamassa inserts some hot guitar work and we’re off to the races. It’s a wonderful song that will lift your heart up high.

“Risin’ Up” is lowdown and funky. It’s a mid-speed, spirit-filled jam that Hall belts out with fire and feeling. The track is another Bonamassa co-write that lets us hear Jimmy’s sweet harp licks complimenting Joe’s guitar work. Both men give us everything they’ve got on it and the studio band rocks with them step-for-step.

The live-sounding blaster “Girl’s Got Sugar” brings Josh Smith into the mix on guitar and he doesn’t disappoint. Smith’s stinging lines cut through the band like a lightning bolt and his tone is suitably epic. Hall lets all of his energy out on this vocal take and he could seemingly out-rock most singers half his age with style and fury. All involved make this one of the most high-octane cuts on the record.

The real gem on this new set is its title track “Ready Now.” It’s the song of a man who has been down the road to nowhere as far as it goes and lived to tell his story and relinquish his weakness-driven ways. Hall testifies about not being ready to face his real self and make the life-saving changes he needed to make. Every fiber of his being fills up each line he sings and he will make you believe in him. Warren Haynes drops in to contribute a ripping slide solo that makes the vibe here even more Southern than it already is. Other album highlights include “Will You Still Be Here” and “Love For It.”

Jimmy Hall is one of the Southern Rock era’s best singers and Ready Now should do much to increase his public visibility. It’s a fine, highly musical effort that’s packed with some of the USA’s premium roots music players and sublime new songs. Miss it and you’ll be sorry. Highly recommended. ~Mike O’Cull

Trapp is one of Nashville's first-call guitarists. His first album, 2016's Pick Peace, planted a stake in the ground for Guthrie as an artist in his own right, and with Life After Dark and its all-star cast of guests, he's trying to advance the story. Guthrie's guest list on Life After Dark is certainly impressive, including Sam Bush, Jimmy Hall, the McCrary Sisters, Dave Matthews Band member Jeff Coffin, Stuart Duncan, Bekka Bramlett, Charlie Worsham, Danny Flowers and pedal steel virtuoso Paul Franklin. He also has Vince Gill on George Jones' "You're Still On My Mind" -- singing rather than playing. "He told me, 'You've got the guitar covered. I'm happy to sing on it,'" Trapp recalls. "It was an honor to have him on there, and to have Vince Gill tell you, 'Man, you're good on the guitar. You got it covered,' that's like, wow, y'know?" It was Gill, however, who suggested adding pedal steel to the song, which sent Trapp to Franklin.

Covering musical bases from traditional country to bluegrass, blues, rock, jazz and more, Life After Dark is evenly split between Guthrie originals and covers, including Don Gibson's "Oh Lonesome Me," sung by Worsham, and the blues staples "Got My Mojo Working" with Hall and a greasy "Nobody's Fault But Mine" with Bramlett and Flowers. But Trapp says the album's diversity came naturally and not by design. "My whole life has kind of been having an overall vision of what I want to do but not having a real plan for anything," Trapp explains. "I've let things evolve as they will. It's the same with this (album); I had some ideas that were fleshed out, some we fleshed out in the studio and that was it. I didn't go in and say, 'Oh, I want it to be like this or that...'"

As fashionable as concert sit-ins have come to be in recent years, such guesting can be the bane of the live performance. So often it is the case that such invitees can interrupts the flow and/or momentum rather than nurturing it. However, Jeff Beck's August 2016 celebration in Los Angeles of his fiftieth anniversary is the exception to that rule: the stream of diverse personnel is of a piece with the stylistic history the event represents.

Live at the Hollywood Bowl is quite likely everything the attendee would want to hear at one of the British guitarist's shows. Likewise, the guests that populate the roster and share the stage with the icon of the instrument are all those a fan would hope for, but not expect to see in a single setting. ~Doug Collette

Jeff Beck paid fitting tribute to Les Paul last summer, celebrating what would have been the pioneering guitarist's 95th birthday by playing his friend and mentor's music, along with classic tunes from the era, in the same Times Square nightclub that Les Paul played every Monday for 14 years, before his death in August 2009.

Sponsored by Gibson Guitar and billed as 'A Celebration of Les Paul,' Jeff Beck was joined by The Imelda May Band at the Iridium Jazz Club on June 9th, 2010. The two-time Rock And Roll Hall of Fame inductee mesmerized the star-studded audience with a tour de force performance of classics that Paul recorded with Mary Ford, 'How High The Moon,' 'Vaya Con Dios' and 'Mockin' Bird Hill,' along with such rock and roll standards as 'Twenty Flight Rock' and 'Walking In The Sand.'

Following this release, Beck will take the 'Rock And Roll Party' on the road for a short U.S. tour. Beck will once again be backed by The Imelda May Band and its enchanting singer, Imelda May, who joined Beck on stage at the 2010 Grammy® Awards for a spot-on rendition of Paul's 'How High The Moon.'

PBS will give fans a first look at a unique edition of this performance with the premiere of 'Jeff Beck Honors Les Paul,' a concert special that captures the first night of 'The Celebration to Honor Les Paul,' which was recorded on June 9, 2010, what would have been Les Paul's 95th birthday. Special guest performers included Troy 'Trombone Shorty' Andrews, Gary U.S. Bonds and Brian Setzer, who traded riffs with Beck on Eddie Cochran's rockabilly classic 'Twenty Flight Rock.'

Hailing from the heartland of where it all started for the original "Swampers", Phil Swindle was born in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Weaned on music performed by Musicians Hall of Fame session players Barry Beckett, Roger Hawkins, David Hood, Jimmy Johnson, Pete Carr, Spooner Oldham, and Clayton Ivey, Phil was drawn like a moth to a flame. Incendiary artists like Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin, The Staples, Boz Scaggs, Clarence Carter, King Curtis, and Duane Allman, were both fuel and fire for this record.

Phil was given his first guitar by his mother Dottie at age 12, but he attributes his deep blues and slide guitar influences to his older brother Marty who introduced him to delta blues greats Johnny Shines, Robert Johnson, Furry Lewis, Earl Hooker, Son House, Muddy Waters, and Howlin' Wolf. Even as a young boy Phil grasped of the essentials of rhythm, dynamics, and the key component…emotion. In a recent interview Phil said, "Music strikes a deep chord in all of us." "It's about emotional conveyance...like synesthesia". "If no one feels what you're playing, you've already missed the train."

Phil has performed with members of the Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Derek Trucks Band, Wet Willie, Marshall Tucker Band, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Deep South, and the Rossington Collins Band. He loves recording and performing festivals and benefit concerts where musicians improvise, jam, and create music in the moment. ART OF SOUL is his debut album and features an anthology of new original material written, produced, and arranged by Phil. This record spotlights Grammy nominee and Georgia Music Hall of Fame member Jimmy Hall. In 2016. Jimmy was recently inducted into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame as well. "To hear Jimmy Hall sing is an inspirational experience. He evokes deep emotion and raw power simultaneously. His voice is an open channel that flows through a very real spiritual conduit. I'm honored to call him my friend and have him on this record." - Phil. On "ART OF SOUL" Jimmy contributes incendiary vocal performance, acoustic and amplified harmonica, and tenor saxophone. Also performing on this record are MCA recording artists, drummer/songwriter Derek Hess from the Rossington Collins Band and bassist Timmy Lindsey from Lynyrd Skynyrd and Molly Hatchet. The record features Malaco Horns arranger & trumpeter Dr. Leland Kornegay, tenor saxophonist, Rick "Hurricane" Johnson, Hammond B3 organist and Atlantic Records songwriter Barry Rapp from the Henry Paul Band, bassist Tommy Gilstrap, pianists Gary Ross and Steve Perez, and veteran Capricorn Records percussionist Woody Pernell.

Art of Soul fuses provocative lyrics with powerful rhythms, horns, percussion, and production elements that hearken back to the analog vibe produced by Shelter Records and artists like Delaney and Bonnie, Freddie King, Leon Russell, J.J. Cale, and early Eric Clapton. Get on the train! Turn on to ART OF SOUL and let is sink in deep.

With billing divided equally between three midlevel headliners, Triple Trouble simmers without ever quite catching fire. Despite backing from the former Stevie Ray Vaughan rhythm section and a clever gospel rearrangement of the Beatles classic "Help," performances tend to drag. No one seems to work up much of a sweat, and guitar solos add up to strings of ancient clichés, absent the intensity they once conveyed. Perhaps if Reese Wynans' organ had been mixed higher, some churchy element might have pepped things up; as it is, bassist Tommy Shannon and drummer Chris Layton come through loud, clear, and listless. A feeling persists throughout this album that if this group had delivered this set before a rowdy crowd in some beery backwoods dive, results would have been far more persuasive. As it is, Triple Trouble is hardly trouble at all.

The ex-Wet Willie frontman returns to the label that got it all started for that band on this easy going set of rootsy soul blues. After leaving Willie, Jimmy Hall has been best known as a sideman for others (Jeff Beck, Jimmy Buffett, Hank Williams Jr., Gregg Allman) due to his abilities as a harp/sax player and vocalist. But as anyone who ever danced to "Keep on Smilin'" knows, Hall is a terrific frontman and proves it on this set. Backed by a band of veterans including guitarist Jack Pearson (who also co-writes a few tunes), Hall tackles bluesy covers from the Nighthawks ("Too Tall to Mambo"), Muddy Waters (a scorching "Long Distance Call"), Willie Dixon ("Twenty-Nine Ways to My Baby's Door"), Sam Cooke ("A Change is Gonna Come"), and Albert King (Booker T.'s "The Hunter") with passion and integrity. His salty vocals are similar to those of Delbert McClinton, but Hall has a wider range and brings a righteous gospel feel to whatever he sings. His version of the oft covered Cooke classic is revelatory as he digs into the lyrics with revival tent passion. The title track is one of only two Hall originals (co-written with Johnny Douglas) and a highlight of the project. Its smooth swamp soul groove is driven by Hall's expressive voice and tight, jabbing fills from Pearson. Things get country-bluesy on Pearson's "Weep and Moan" an acoustic Delta blues that's as authentic and gritty as anything from a native Mississippi bluesman. The following "Hold What You Got" does the same for Chicago blues Elmore James style, where Pearson lets fly on slide guitar. If there was any doubt that Jimmy Hall should be a solo star, this disc removes it. It's a rousing success and proves he is as talented as many of the spotlight stealing acts he has assisted as a sideman. [The 2006 reissue adds three quality tracks including the excellent instrumental "Duck Soup."] ~Hal Horowitz

One great Southern blues/rock/R&B singer pays tribute to a predecessor on this enjoyable and varied set. The powerful singer Jimmy Hall (first heard with the 1970s rock group Wet Willie and later as a session player and with Hank Williams, Jr. and Jeff Beck) was the perfect choice, for he both pays tribute to Hinton and often makes these songs sound like his own. Eddie Hinton, whose prime years were 1968-1980 and who passed away in 1995, would have been pleased by this spirited set. Guitarist Greg Martin, who overdubbed his lead guitar solos and fills, also remixed alternate versions of "Coming After You" and "Salty" while a brief radio interview with bassist David Hood about the decline of Eddie Hinton wraps up this well-conceived tribute. Build Your Own Fire is highly recommended to fans of the genre. ~Scott Yanow

On this tribute album, 15 of cult roots rock singer/songwriter J.J. Cale's songs are covered by an assortment of artists. This doesn't follow the usual format of such tributes, with almost every artist contributing two tracks rather than one; Swamp Cabbage are particularly overrepresented, backing singers on three cuts in addition to doing two of their own. Cale isn't the best known of singers, but most of those paying homage to him on this CD are yet more obscure, with the exception of the vocal group the Persuasions. For the most part, the acts interpret Cale's work in a swampy roots manner that's faithful to the spirit of the prototypes, without adding notable twists. The exceptions are the Persuasions, who do "I'll Make Love to You Anytime" and "Travelin' Light" in their trademark a cappella arrangements -- these tracks stand out more than any other on the record, yet are the least reflective of Cale's sensibility. Without much in the way of name acts or inventiveness, it's hard to see whom this tribute CD will strongly appeal to, whether listeners are fans of J.J. Cale or not. ~Richie Unterberger

When they fold up their billowing mushroom tent for the final time, 2014 will have been a full-on Allman Brothers year given the variety of concert celebrations, albums, DVDs, and books that flowed copiously throughout it. No other legacy institution continued for so long to not only be relevant, but visionary. Thus, paying tribute to The Allman Brothers Band proves difficult because it’s impossible to live up to the spirit of their performances, and tough to put a unique spin on their songs. At the helm here is John Wesley, a Florida guitarist with some heady friends and fast connections. But the album’s definitely disjointed. Cuts by Pat Travers, Leon Russell with Ronnie Earl, the Oak Ridge Boys with Tinsley Ellis, and others just don’t cut the mustard or flow together overall.

There are several captivating moments, to varying degrees. Molly Hatchet’s treatment of “Melissa” toughens the ode, and a precise version of “Whipping Post” benefits considerably from old friends Jimmy Hall and Steve Morse, singing, and ripping on guitar respectively. Robben Ford takes a run at Elmore James’s “One Way Out” at the same pace the Allman’s made a hit out of it with over forty years ago. His sweet guitar and peerless California soul polish the old blues into a brand new luster. But the brightest spots during these Midnight Rider sessions arrive with Roy Rogers’ treatment of “Jessica,” and Sonny Landreth and Commander Cody’s romp on “Southbound.” Both slide guitar masters offer a uniquely perfect balance of reverence, individuality, and heart. ~Tom Clarke
