b. 9 July 1955, Blyth, Northumberland, England. Lamb’s initial interest in blues came from listening to John Mayall’s records; he then discovered the music of Sonny Terry, in whose style he thoroughly immersed himself for 12 years. He played in folk clubs and in 1975 was successful in a harmonica championship held in Germany. Around 1980, he began playing amplified harmonica, initially in Walter Horton’s style, and as a member of the Blues Burglars he recorded for the Red Lightnin’ label in 1986.

Shortly afterwards, Lamb moved to London and formed his own band. In 1990, 1991 and 1992 Paul Lamb And The King Snakes were voted UK Blues Band of the Year, and Lamb himself received the Instrumentalist of the Year award which he won for a further five years, well into the 90s. The classic line-up of the King Snakes came together in 1992 and featured Martin Deegan (drums), Chad Strentz (vocal/guitar), Jim Mercer (bass), and the weathered-looking but highly accomplished guitarist John Whitehill (b. 11 February 1952, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England). Earlier members included Alan Savage and Daniel Strittmatter (drums), Dave Stevens (bass), and Johnny D. (vocals, guitar).

Lamb may never receive mass acceptance, but the King Snakes are one of the most exciting bands playing white-boy Chicago blues to have appeared for many years. Lamb’s playing has been heard in the stage musical Tommy, in television advertisements for Nissan cars, and in the television dramas Spender and Crocodile Shoes. He recorded a top 40 single ‘Harmonica Man’ for Pete Waterman’s PWL Records in 1994 under the name Bravado. The many awards Lamb has received from magazines such as Blueprint represent a worthy recognition of Lamb’s unrivalled position at the forefront of British blues. Blues & Rhythm magazine aptly described the band as ‘lazily cocksure and coolly aggressive’. /Biography by AllMusic

Paul Lamb & The King Snakes - Harmonica Man: The Paul Lamb Anthology 1986-2002 (2-Disc set)

We all know the stuff that turns up in biographies, is empty and meaningless because it's all been said before. So, let's talk plainly about Paul Lamb & The King Snakes, the best blues band in Britain.

It didn’t happen suddenly. It took years of hard work and application, unfashionable words that signify little in these days of instant fame. As Paul can tell you, he and his band have done their individual time, made their mistakes, applied what they’ve learned, focused on their musicianship and the results are passed on to audiences that flock to their gigs. They in turn are guaranteed to enjoy genuine music performed with skill and mutual encouragement. It’s a simple but sure formula.

Right now, the King Snakes are a refreshing mixture of (relative) youth and experience. The experience starting at the top, for Paul Lamb has spent the last thirty-some years whoopin’ and hollerin’ in clubs in his native North-East plus a later move to London, in concert and on festival stages, creating a personal synthesis of his harmonica heroes and his own unique and innate talent. His history includes representing Britain in the World Harmonica Championships, working with his particular mentor, Sonny Terry, and with any number of other blues artists who’ve visited these shores Over the years Paul Lamb & the King Snakes have won countless awards , sold record breaking quantities of albums and been inducted into the British Blues Awards Hall of Fame alongside the likes of Peter Green & John Mayall.

Paul Lamb and Chad Strentz have taken on a side project with “Goin’ Down This Road”, as an acoustic duo much like in the tradition of Paul’s idols Sonny Terry And Brownie McGhee.

It’s just Paul’s harmonica and Chad’s vocals and guitar doing their interpretations of others’ songs and three originals. Chad strums along as Paul weaves his harmonica magic. They run through blues staples and give other genres the blues treatment.

Among blues greats covered are Big Bill Broonzy, Rice Miller, Sticks McGhee and Roosevelt Skyes. Chad’s gritty voice works well except it gets to be grating on Solomon Burke’s “Don’t You Fell Like Cryin'”, a tune of which I’m most familiar with Professor Longhair’s version.

“Summertyne” is a solo harmonica instrumental done up in Paul’s inimitable style. Paul gives Sonny Terry a full-blown “whoopin'” harmonica tribute with his original “Hootin’ And Tootin'”.

The dedication to and true love for the blues idiom shows through. The combination of blues knowledge and musical skill touches everything these guys do. As a long time follower of their music, my only regret is that they have never graced our country with their presence. ~Greg "Bluesdog" Szalony

Paul Lamb has been in the business for 40 years and is considered one of the best blues harp players of our time. He's usually out and about with his Kingsnakes, but 2.3 times a year he comes over the channel and kills the stage with the Roosevelt Houserockers!

Detroit. Few words draw up such emotion and imagery as that one word sentence. It’s really a novel on its own, and it says more about music than most books ever could. One of the things most people forget in this modern era of music is the deep root of blues that comes from Detroit. One man who hasn’t is Paul Lamb and his band The Detroit Breakdown.

Paul grew up in Detroit, listening to a mix of great rock radio like Bob Seger, Stevie Wonder, George Clinton and drew from other outside influences like Hendrix and Stevie Ray as he began to play guitar. After travelling the country seeking out his musical soul and playing with the best of the best, Paul has finally found what he was looking for right here at home.

Listening to Paul Lamb and the Detroit Breakdown is a musical time capsule. It will take you through the drive and riffs of the 70’s, but also has the modern pulse that comes from recording at the legendary Rust Belt Studios(Kid Rock, Uncle Kracker) that keeps it all fresh. He’s not rehashing a memory, he’s brought this music to life.

After extensively touring Europe, highlighted by appearances at Glastonbury and touring with Walter Trout, Peter Green and many others, Paul and the Detroit Breakdown are bringing their music back home, similar to the path Hendrix followed. It all comes back around, much like it does with music and Detroit. Paul carries the torch as well as any native from this great city could ever do.

"Good evening ladies and gentlemen, Paul Lamb and the King Snakes" the announcer introduces the band for an evening of traditional and rocking blues. More than that this is a simply outstanding concert recorded live at one of the truly iconic venues, and Paul and his band serve up as good a set of blues as you will ever hear. Their last album was a set of late night blues "After Hours", well received it was as well, but here in a large venue the full King Snakes show is to be heard, over eleven songs five of which are self written, the others some very well chosen covers that suit the band perfectly.

Paul Lamb over the last forty plus years has been one of the most respected, awarded and finest harmonica players in the world, and yet still he never stops moving forward and developing his music, one listen to this new set and if it doesn’t get an award for best true blues album it would be unfair. Over several tracks the interplay between Paul and his son Ryan is quite outstanding, and Ryan deserves recognition as a guitarist, absolutely rooted in the blues tradition and has brought an even greater depth to the band since he joined a few years ago now. Long time co-vocalist and rhythm guitarist Chad Strentz is still there, and remains one of the finest vocalists around but here he and Paul share the vocal duties. Add to these front three a rhythm section second to none, the rock on which any band depends on Rod Demick on bass guitar and drummer Dino Coccia. Well, that’s the line up, what about the album itself. Before we mention songs the production sound is superb, clear and so well balanced throughout.

The set opens with "Mr Lamb’s Groove Walk" a gentle opener with a laid back shuffle beat, up front Paul’s harmonica, alongside some seriously tasty guitar work by Ryan makes this instrumental the perfect choice to build the set on, before the pace is upped with a song Paul wrote many years ago about a young lady he once knew "Jumpin’ Little Judy" and with Chad taking over the vocal side. Next up one featuring in the main Paul and Ryan again "Let Me In". The version of the Sonny Boy Williamson "Ain’t It A Pity" sounds like a modern day Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry that feel works perfectly here, and once again featuring the father / son combination.

Paul introduces "Baby Please Don’t Go" with, This songs been done to death, so many have recorded it but she must have been pretty special for Big Boy Broonzy to write such a song about her. Rod and Dino really set a cracking groove here, and this is one time it’s good to hear it again, and just soak in that harmonica. Another down home blues in "Burnt Child", again lead in the main by Paul and Ryan. Before another instrumental from the pen of father and son, followed by "Woopin’ The Blues", another track to mainly feature Paul and Ryan, but for all this it’s a band album, this is also another instrumental track with woops and hollers along the way.

The set draws to a close with a pounding version of Don Nix’s ‘Tore Down’, Paul’s own reason for his music "Preaching The Blues". Things draw to a close with a stomping boogie, and "Come To A Conclusion" sung by Chad, and a great way to send your audience home happy.

Paul and his band still remain one of the best bands in world blues whether in Europe or the USA, and by any standards this is a truly stunning and enjoyable set by masters of their music. As a group the music is tight and blues in it’s a blues album at it’s finest. A great concert has made an equally great album.

“Son, just play what you feel, and feel what you play”... Sonny Terry

This was Sonny talking to Paul in 1977, guiding Paul to become the great performer & player he is today ......in many ways unknowingly, inspiring his new album.

This latest album has developed over numerous drop-in sessions at The Trench Studios ,which is owned by producer and musician Paula Riordan. Paula has collaborated with Paul on many of his great recordings. Recordings which include the pop hit “Harmonica Man” from 1994, up to and including the award winning “Hole in the Wall” album from 2014.

With Paul and the King Snakes being regular visitors to The Trench, it came as no surprise, that one night Paula got a phone call … “ just finished a gig nearby & we’re on our way to you”.
As you would expect with 5 musicians, 1 producer and various instruments, something is bound to happen. What started out as a friendly late night jam was, through Paula’s forethought, recorded for posterity.
During that first impromptu, unrehearsed session, several tracks were recorded with various members of the band contributing late into the night, as and when the mood took them.
Later Paula reviewed the session and found that there were, as Paul would say “killer tracks" and a decision was made to lay down some more, over the coming months.

It was felt by both Paul and Paula that all the tracks should be recorded in the same simple but effective way, to capture the raw sound like the first session, as an unrehearsed jam. Over the next few months’ several more of these late night sessions followed.
Very little post production was applied, just enough to clean up the odd rough edge, you may still hear the occasional click, crackle or clink but none of this detracts from the feeling, the atmosphere and the spontaneity of the music.
This is what makes the new album so special, "it is, as it was" just 5 great blues players, playing what they feel. No long protracted studio sessions, it is a raw, natural and organic Blues album.
This album is for the purist and the avid Paul Lamb fan, along with enough great tunes to attract new listeners to the Blues.
Some wonderful, impulsive and improvised recordings, back to the roots of Country Blues, effortless but enthralling songs, played by celebrated musicians, simply having a great time.

As the maestro Sonny would say “play what you feel and feel what you play”

Play it loud and enjoy...

Paul Lamb started playing the harmonica during his childhood, inspired by Sonny Terry, and he was fortunate to meet and collaborate with him after beginning to perform in clubs by the age of fifteen. Lamb played only acoustic blues until about 1980. He also played alongside his heroes such as Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, and Brownie McGhee. Lamb formed the Blues Burglars with guitarist Johnny Whitehill in the early 1980s, a formation that eventually became Paul Lamb & the King Snakes.

Paul Lamb & The King Snakes - 2 albums: John Henry Jumps In/She's A Killer

/AllMusic Biography

Paul Lamb and The King Snakes are today acknowledged globally as being amongst the very finest purveyors of Rhythm & Blues. Mixing traditional blues, R&B and roots-rock with a unique British perspective the band has come up with an original and invigorating sound that plays particularly well on stage, and are often heralded as one of the few remaining true blues acts that can be witnessed.

Originally from Blyth, a mining village in Northumberland, as a teenager Paul heard a track by John Mayall & the Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton. This moved him so much that he was inspired to pick up the harmonica and play the blues, forming firstly the Blues Burglars and later on the King Snakes.

After making a good name for himself in the North East, Lamb was invited down to London to play with Junior Wells and Buddy Guy. It was an offer he could not refuse and he relocated to London and started his own band - The King Snakes. Four decades and 14 albums later he’s played with blues and rock greats such as Sonny Terry, Albert Collins, Mark Knopfler, The Who, Rod Stewart and Brownie McGhee, all of which has contributed to Lamb forming and perfecting his sound as well as earning himself a place in the British Blues Awards Hall Of Fame.

The King Snakes line-up consists of Chad Strentz (vocals/rhytm guitar), Rob Demick (bass/backing vocals), Ryan Lamb (lead guitar/backing vocals) and Dino Coccia (drums/backing vocals), all top class players well regarded in the business and each one a true musician in their own right.

This brand new studio album from the blues harmonica virtuoso features 9 self-penned songs mixed with blues classics from the likes of Smokey Robinson and Brownie McGhee.

From classic blues rock and R & B on tracks like ‘Jumpin' Little Judy’, ’Making A Change’ and ‘Way Down Low’, through the soul of ‘Sometime Tomorrow’ and the gospel like choir on ‘A Better Place To Be’ to the swing cover of Gary Moore’s ballad ‘Still Got The Blues For You’, this record truly highlights the King Snakes musical prowess and diversity.

P-A-U-L Lamb & The Detroit Breakdown are from Detroit, MI and should not be mistaken for the UK band Paul Lamb & The King Snakes.

P-A-U-L Lamb & The Detroit Breakdown certainly live up to their name. Given their prickly urban rock, funk, soul and bluesy tinged style, they fit perfectly into the city’s musical landscape.

Their songs are heartfelt, uncompromising and as hard hitting as their muscular musical ability and imaginative arrangements. 15 or so of Detroit’s best – including Anglo guitarist Joanne Shaw Taylor, and cellist Jason Charboneau – all lend a hand, on an album full of carefully crafted songs with lyrical weight and passionate playing. Yet truth be told, like so many bands before them, their music might as well be stamped ‘for export only’, as they have made their biggest impact abroad, in 20 countries spanning Europe and Asia.

I mention this because ‘Ready Fire Aim’ (a play on words that mirrors contemporary disposable ideas and instant gratification) is a wide ranging album that encapsulates the full gamut of roots rock, all shaped by the remarkable trio of The Detroit Breakdown. Led by the tall, gangling guitar player Paul Ulysses Lamb – he of the gravelly voice and a lyrical insight – and propelled by the peerless rhythm section of bass player Joey Spina and drummer Layla Hall (also on significant bv’s), P-a-u-l have cut their most coherent and impacting album. P-a-u-l & The Detroit Breakdown offer a refreshing take on familiar musical genres, incorporating gritty funk, rock and delicate ballads into an album that feels like a musical journal. ~petefeenstra
