In the 1920s, record companies found the Black audience could be profitable. Record sales soared. Sex - disguised -was a major part of blues lyrics. Fish, flesh, fruit and fowl were all co-opted, as well as rent men and gas men, butchers and bakers, carpenters and coffee grinders, keyholes and kitchens, cigarettes and sissies, frying pans and furniture, and unkindly, a bicycle. Davenport learned to play organ and piano in his father's chuch from his mother who was organist in the church. He was going to follow in his mother's footsteps but he was expelled from the Theological Seminay in 1911 for playing Ragtime. Vaudeville and carnivals became his new career and he toured and recorded with blues singer Dora Carr for 2 years. Davenport suffered a stroke in 1938 that left his right hand paralyzed but he remained active as a vocalist until he could play again.

The material ranges from magnificent Cow Cow Davenport solo tunes to good and not-so-good duets with a host of performers. Ivy Smith and Dora Carr are the artists with whom Davenport works best. Since these were dubbed from 78s, don't expect pristine sound. -- Allmusic.

Cow Cow Davenport - The Essential

Boogie blues and barrelhouse piano legend Charles "Cow Cow" Davenport's recorded legacy filled four CDs when reissued by Document during the '90s, with two volumes devoted to his primary sessions (1925-1945), a third filled with rare, privately recorded acetates from the late '40s, and a separate disc packed with examples of his skills as accompanist for singers of blues and hokum swing. A single album released in 2000 by the Wolf label sampled his career from 1926 through 1938. The best general purpose collection of all, however, is The Essential Cow Cow Davenport, a non-chronological, 36-track retrospective brought out on the Classic Blues label in 2002. This double-disc anthology incorporates elements of the Document and Wolf editions, and is highly recommended as an introduction for those who are new to this artist's work as well as a varied celebration for people who know and love their Cow Cow. The most important piano solo of his career, many people have reason to assert, is the "Atlanta Rag," recorded for Gennett in 1929. In addition to this and other solid examples of his archetypal technique, the pianist is heard with vocalists Ivy Smith, Dora Carr, Sam Theard (sometimes identified as Sam Tarpley); Hound Head Henry, Jim Towel, and a group identified as the Southern Blues Singers. Note Davenport's cover of Leadbelly's "Jim Crow Blues" with cornet accompaniment by B.T. Wingfield, the periodic participation of guitarist Tampa Red and the presence of Sam Price at the 88s on "Don't You Loudmouth Me," "I Ain't No Ice Man," "Jump Little Jitterbug," "The Mess Is Here," and a couple of other titles from a swinging session that took place in 1938 when Davenport was temporarily unable to negotiate the keyboard and confined himself to singing robustly like Fats Waller. While there are plenty of good reasons to track down Davenport's complete works in chronological order, his entry in the Classic Blues Essential series stands as the ideal choice for anyone who senses the need for a friendly little kick in the butt. -- Allmusic.

In addition to their indispensable compilations devoted to the bluesmen and women of the 1920s and 1930s, Yazoo has delivered a number of excellent, topical country blues sets as well. Though not always as essential as the single-artist discs, they are nonetheless valuable on both musical and historical terms. Released simultaneously with the label's bawdy Barrelhouse Mamas collection, Down in Black Bottom is a similar collection of early piano blues, with the focus once again being on small combos. Possibly due to the fact that pianists were so often thrust into the role of accompanist, few of these artists made significant names for themselves on record. There is a handful of exceptions, of course. Little Brother Montgomery was an exceptionally gifted pianist who, before moving to Chicago during the 1940s, absorbed the rich and varied piano traditions that surrounded him in the Jackson, MS, area. Tampa Red remained a popular performer long after his move to the Windy City, where the hokum material he favored went over well with Chicago audiences. Names like Sammy Brown, Sylvester Palmer, and Parish Turner, however, remain more mysterious. Most of the musicians on this compilation who managed to achieve notoriety did so through their piano skills rather than their singing. This was good time music for the most part and, as a result, these signers weren't the most exceptional of blues versifiers either. Oftentimes the lyrics rely on the sort of stock phrases that nearly every bluesman acquired as a matter of course. Though the blues on this disc hardly represent the most emotionally compelling of Yazoo's extensive catalog, the set will certainly appeal to enthusiasts of the style, as well as blues fans in search of a less demanding introduction to the early recordings. ~Nathan Bush

British musician, bandleader, and blues historian John Mayall was tapped by the excellent jazz and blues archival label Document to dig through his record collection and present the best of the boogie-woogie pioneers. Not only did Mayall select the 22 songs for the disc, but he also wrote the liner notes in which he recalls his life-altering discovery of this music by hunting down used 78s back in the early '50s. The lineup Mayall chose speaks for itself. Not only does he pay tribute to the professors of boogie-woogie, but also a cross reference of blues pianists recorded between 1928 and 1960, none of which are represented by more than one track, serving the listener with a full scope of variations in style. ~Al Campbell
