King Curtis was the last of the great R&B tenor sax giants. Born Curtis Ousley in Fort Worth, Texas, he came to prominence in the mid-'50s as a session musician in New York, recording, at one time or another, for most East Coast R&B labels. A long association with Atco/Atlantic began in 1958, especially on recordings by the Coasters. He recorded singles for many small labels in the '50s - his own Atco sessions (1958-1959), and Prestige/New Jazz and Prestige/Tru-Sound for jazz and R&B albums (1960-1961). Curtis also had a number one R&B single with "Soul Twist" on Enjoy (1962). He was signed by Capitol (1963-1964), where he cut mostly singles, including the number 20 R&B hit "Soul Serenade." He returned to Atco/Atlantic in 1965, where he remained for the rest of his life.

He had solid R&B single success with "Memphis Soul Stew" and "Ode to Billie Joe" (1967). Beginning in 1967, Curtis started to take a more active studio role at Atlantic, leading and contracting sessions for other artists, producing with Jerry Wexler, and later on his own. He also became the leader of Aretha Franklin's backing unit, the Kingpins. He compiled several albums of singles during this period. All aspects of his career were in full swing at the time he was murdered in 1971. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2000. /Biography by Bob Porter, AllMusic

Candice Ivory takes the next step on her artistic journey with this self-produced album including Jimmy "Duck" Holmes and a host of other blues icons. Drawing upon all of Ivory's musical influences, from her great-uncle Will Roy Sanders' band, The Fieldstones, and her family's gospel roots to the deep blues of Bentonia, Mississippi, "New Southern Vintage" ushers in a new era of music.

Musically, visually and intellectually, Candice Ivory wields a trifecta of creativity that is powerfully unique and broad. From the "Blue Blood" in her veins to the primal, hypnotic "Catfish Blues" and all points in between, she weaves a magnificently textured musical expression of the rich roots of the South.

While her "new southern vintage" concept and its fresh perspective on black culture in the American South has been in development thematically for more than a year, its near concurrence with the box office hit, Sinners, echoes in familiarity. Performed by a world class, multi-generational group of musicians, the music of "New Southern Vintage" stands solidly unique and powerfully poised to become a comparable major hit in the music world.

The Backbones - Two Track Wonders

Album: Two Track Wonders
Size: 59,2 MB
Time: 25:40
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2009
Styles: Blues, harmonica blues
Art: Front, tray

1. I'm In Love With You (2:52)
2. Love Me (2:45)
3. Icecream Man (4:08)
4. Come On In This House (3:56)
5. Don't Leave Me At Home (3:32)
6. Tramp (4:03)
7. Stranger Blues (4:21)

Here's an excellent 7-track mini-album from Holland’s finest, The Backbones. The band is fronted by the immense personality of Pieter "Big Pete" van der Pluijm, with big-toned harmonica and fine vocals. The other members are Sander Kooiman (guitar), Julius "Lord Julius"’ van Brakel (bass) and Joost Tazelaar (drums) with guest keyboards from Govert van der Kolm. Big Pete is probably one of Europe’s finest musicians, with the band having backed many visiting American players such as Monster Mike Welch and Alex Schultz, as well as being involved in the Lester Butler Tribute Band together with Matt Schofield.

This release came about when their friend Rob van Boeckel had studio time available at New Road Studios in Wijchen, due to a band splitting, and the resulting album was recorded in just one night. This comes highly recommended and should be available at all gigs. Apparently the band have signed for the top American label Delta Groove, with a full length album in the offing for this year – that should be well worth the wait.

Lil' Red & The Rooster with Bobby Floyd - 7

Album: 7
Size: 89,9 MB
Time: 38:57
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2025
Styles: Blues, jazzy blues
Art: Front

1. Wild's Rising (5:48)
2. Stack 'Em Up Baby (4:42)
3. Is This Heart Taken (3:28)
4. Melancholy Mood (6:34)
5. Midnight On The Rocks (3:18)
6. Between The Lines (5:48)
7. Mr. Saboteur (aka Do The Donut) (3:48)
8. Same Old Blues (Feat. Jeff Morrow) (Bonus Track ) (5:27)

The international duo of Jennifer “Lil’ Red” Milligan and Pascal Fouquet have long walked their own path, and 7 finds them at their most adventurous. The record opens with a cinematic sweep, carrying a spy-noir atmosphere that threads throughout the album. It’s blues at its root, but stretched and reshaped into something fresh with Pascal’s guitar lines bending between fire and subtlety, and Lil’ Red’s voice radiating intimacy and power.

The album’s backstory adds to its weight. What began as a jazzy instrumental envisioned around Bobby Floyd’s Hammond B3 has blossomed into a collaborative journey spanning Paris, Columbus and Chicago. Floyd’s playing is central – warm, commanding and lifting the arrangements skyward – while the rhythm section locks into grooves that are equal parts classic and unexpected. There’s a pulse of gospel in one moment, a cinematic noir edge in the next and then the familiar ache of blues, grounding it all.

7 shifts into deeply personal territory. Lil’ Red writes with fierce honesty, using themes of self-empowerment, loss, healing and freedom to anchor the songs. But perhaps the album’s greatest strength lies in how it was recorded — live in the studio, with all the risks and rewards that entails. The result is a record that breathes, full of tiny sparks of communication between the musicians. You can hear the smiles, the raised eyebrows and the spontaneous swells of energy that can’t be scripted. When Lil’ Red sings about freedom, or when Pascal lets his guitar twist into an unexpected phrase, you believe it because you can feel it happening in real time.

By the time the record closes, you’re left with something that instinctively stays with you. A mix of smoky late night atmosphere, gospel shout energy and heartfelt blues storytelling. It’s a collection of songs that map out grief, joy and connection in seven fully realized chapters. Here, Lil’ Red & The Rooster have created a work that honors the roots of blues while bending it into new shapes, a record that invites you to listen closely, feel deeply and maybe even heal a little along the way. 7 cements the duo’s place as one of the most daring and soulful acts performing today.

Garry Burnside - It's My Time Now

8. I Been Looking (4:07)
9. She's Gone (3:00)
10. AGF Out (4:24)
11. Garry's Night Out (Bonus Track) (7:28)

Garry Burnside, youngest son of legendary Hill Country bluesman R.L. Burnside, cut his teeth playing with his famous father and other siblings while growing up, beginning his professional career at the tender age of eleven. Garry spent his teens and twenties as the protégé, bassist and occasional guitarist for neighbouring Mississippi Blues legend Junior Kimbrough, with whom he toured and recorded. Burnside has now stepped out of the shadows and released ‘It’s My Time Now’, his first solo record.

Burnside’s years of playing bass guitar, bring a fluidity to his guitar playing on the album, his style swings and grooves in a similar way to that of the late great Stevie Ray Vaughan, combine that with the influence of the late R.L. Burnside and his guitar style eases from straight blues, rock, jazz and swing. A style that Burnside himself describes as “Hill Country with lil bit of funk”.

The highlights are many, including the title track, ‘Young Country Boy’ and ‘Ramblin’ and all three instrumental tracks ‘High’, ‘AGF Out’ and the incredible mood-setter, ‘Bad Luck City’. ‘It’s My Time Now’, is an album that shows an artist who has been soaking up influences and inspiration from the giants of the blues genre. Garry Burnside may have taken his time getting to the point releasing his debut solo album, but it has been worth the wait and if this collection of music is anything to go by, he’ll be doing this for many years to come. /Gerry McNally, Folk & Tumble

Personnel: Garry Burnside (vocals, guitar); Andrea Stanton (guitar); Pinky Pulliam (bass); Avery Dilworth (drums); John C. Stubblefield (bass on track 4).

Nico Wayne Toussaint - My Kind Of Blues

Size: 335 MB

1. Going Home (3:42)
2. Barbara (4:46)
3. Bad Boy (3:28)
4. Give Me A Kiss Baby (4:37)
5. Can't You Tell (4:05)

8. I Love You Babe (5:25)
9. Fever (4:17)
10. Walking Down College Street (4:54)
11. Bye Bye (6:39)

From this first album, released in 1998, Nico Wayne Toussaint showed the extent of his talent. When he blows his harmonica with vigor and conviction, he has the groove, there is no doubt; it does him well, his peachy, sharp, emotional and authentic timbre. He also knows how to play in his clear voice, with a touch of graceful notes. Sometimes you might think of Paul Personne, which is no mean compliment. Provided you accept this rather particular, very Frenchie tone, which must be taken as it is, even if it does not have quite the dusty flavor of the American great outdoors. You would have to be insensitive not to give in to the very compelling charm expressed in certain personal compositions (Give Me A Kiss Baby or Bye Bye for example, which he paradoxically interprets in French, with delightful nonchalance) or in this beautiful cover of a James Cotton record, West Helena Blues. Since then, Nico has grown in maturity and affluence, which has given him international stature; but he has lost a bit of the freshness that characterized his first album. This return to basics is all the more interesting... Finally, it should be noted that he is very well surrounded by a small band whose most robust blues emerge. On guitar Jeremy Johnson (lead), Phil Schmid (rhythm), Lee Tedreau (slide), on bass Billy Black and on drums Steve “Slim” Erickson.

The Backbones were among the best European blues bands in the early 2000s, and this Dutch band fronted by Pieter "Big Pete" van der Pluijm had a rotating lineup of 10 musicians. Throughout 2005, The Backbones did several European tours where they served as a backing band for talented musicians from all over the world. During a number of these tours recordings were made at the New Road Studios. All recordings are live to 2 track and contain no overdubs or editing what so ever.

What makes this album special is the fact that it contains four different sessions recorded with some of the blues greats: Matt Schofield, Monster Mike Welch, Mitch Kashmar, and Hook Herrera. The result is outstanding recordings, presented in a sophisticated and gripping way. Modern white blues, at times a bit rocking, at times very bluesy, and even with a touch of jazz. A strong and highly recommended album.

Based out of Lyon, France, Nico Chona & The Freshtones are a hard-driving, hard-to-classify four-piece ensemble who make their recording debut on this album, which liberally mixes blues, rock and American roots throughout and frequently shifts gears within songs.

They’re fronted by lead guitarist/lead singer Nico Chona, who began writing tunes at age 14 in the late 2000s, primarily influenced by sounds emanating from the U.S. and U.K. in the ‘60s and ‘70s – Muddy Waters, early ZZ Top, Cream and Crosby Stills Nash & Young among them.

He’s backed by a trio of childhood friends: bassist Dan Nambotin, guitarist Joris Perrin and drummer Nicholas Gamet, all of whom provide backing harmonies as they deliver an energetic brand of music packed with occasion surprises when they shift between stylings.

This CD was recorded live to a 24-track tape recorder at Magneto Studios in Lyon and consists of ten originals and one cover, all delivered in English with little or no accent from the band’s homeland, where they’ve been playing some of the larger music festivals.

The opener, “Wheels of Obsession,” begins with the roar of an engine before the group launches into a driving boogie, then slows and drops volume dramatically to make way for lyrics that promise to take a companion to somewhere in the south where no one’s waiting before shifting gears and picking up speed once more. Chona’s vocals are somewhat lost in the mix, but are pleasant, and the rhythm section is tight.

The sound shifts quietly to the Delta for the opening and slowly picks up speed and intensity before erupting once again in “Run,” continuing the travel theme and describing an encounter with a black cat late at night. Nico’s guitar blazes in full blues-rock fury to carry the song home. The boogie comes with stop-time feel in the uptempo “Screen Boy,” an invitation to another person to “drop the digital world” and join the band on its ride.

“Again and Again” opens with the sound of shifting through an assortment of radio stations before the band launches into a semi-acoustic ballad that’s much lighter than what’s come before. It echoes ‘60s folk-rock with minor psychedelic overtones as it describes an encounter with someone who’s been watching the singer intently for a long time. The feel continues in another ballad, “The Heat,” which features pleasant choral work on the chorus before returning to the blues-rock root to end.

The hard-charging “Black Sky Man” starts slowly with more sounds of an engine experiencing difficulties before firing. It’s another boogie with an inventive rhythm pattern, but yields to more sounds of the Delta in the haunting “Hello,” another solicitation to walk and talk in the early morning.

The ‘60s are back in style for “The Winning Wind,” which is breezy at first before building intensity. A cover of Hambone Willie Newbern’s 1929 Okeh Records classic “Rollin’ and Tumblin’” gets a supercharged redo before “Goldtop Sunday Blues” reflects on a lady who’s a delight on the weekend, but a devil when Monday comes. The disc closes with “Catalin Crest,” a sweet ballad that picks up steam slowly as it recounts good times laying in the sun next to a lady love.

For over 20 years, the band “Blues Power” has been successfully rocking its way through the Berlin scene and elsewhere.

As the name suggests, they dedicated themselves to the harder, rockier blues style, causing quite a stir. Eventually, Berlin's blues lady Kat Baloun encountered the band and spontaneously joined them for a gig.

This has developed into a long-standing friendship, leading to many more joint performances. It's high time to present this lasting musical liaison to a knowledgeable audience!

No sooner said than done: Here comes the project with a lot of blues – but also a lot of rock.

Singer Mercedes Nicole released her debut album “Constellation” in 2022, which reached number 12 on the Rocks Music Chart in addition receiving air-play on radio stations in France, Brazil, Hawaii, United Kingdom, South Africa, Netherlands, Spain, Germany, Canada, Switzerland and of course USA. Since then, her fame has not stopped growing. With this new recording, Mercedes also wants to make herself known internationally, after she has already become popular in Western Washington.

Mercedes Nicole’s principal performing feature is to bring her music to all those people who are seeking comfort, joy, love and healing of the heart. In her own words, “life is full of detours and adventure. It is no secret that music softens the rough paths and helps us get to the other side, where fun, laughter and joy reside. Let’s play in the rhythm of life together.”

To do so, Mercedes Nicole displays in this new recording a repertoire of thirteen songs ranging from blues to soft jazz, swing or ballads, seven of them Nicole’s own compositions and the rest versions like “Feel Like Rain” by J. Hiatt, “Smokestack Lightning” by Howlin’ Wolf or “The Sky Is Crying” by Elmore James.

All the album songs stand out for their elegance and versatility, as well as communicating an intimate relaxed feeling and happiness, developed with an extreme good taste by Mercedes’ wrapping full of nuance voice, well supported by musicians gifted with a remarkable technique like Rood Cook on guitar, Jake Sele on piano and organ, Alexey Nikolaev on tenor sax, Stacy Jones on harmonica, Scotty Harris on bass, Andrew Cloutiere on drums and Tommy Warren on backing vocals. All of them have perfectly understood the message of joy, love, happiness and hope Nicole wants to spread, always present in an album that tastefully brings these feelings to all listeners.

Texas Headhunters is what happens when three of Texas’ fiercest guitar slingers – Ian Moore, Johnny Moeller, and Jesse Dayton – finally collide on the same stage. Born from deep roots, old friendships, and a shared reverence for the swaggering soul of Texas blues, this is not your average jam. It’s a movement. A reckoning. A new chapter in the book of American roots music.

Each member carries serious pedigree: Moore’s psychedelic fire, Moeller’s deep-pocket sting, and Dayton’s outlaw storytelling have powered everything from The Fabulous Thunderbirds to Austin’s Antone’s legacy to Grammy-nominated collaborations and cult favorite solo records. Individually, they’ve blazed trails. Together, they’re setting the whole damn map on fire.

This isn’t a tribute, and it’s not nostalgia – it’s a revival with teeth. With roots tracing back to Antone’s and the late Clifford Antone’s last wave of discoveries, the Headhunters are here to remind the world what Texas blues was, is, and still can be.

Omar Dykes was born in McComb, MS, also the hometown of Bo Diddley, who is one of Omar’s musical heroes. In 1962, he decided he wanted to play the guitar. He started his first band in 1963 and has been playing the blues ever since. Omar joined a successful party band in the 70’s called the Howlers from Hattiesburg, MS, who all moved to Austin, TX in 1976. They played many iconic venues including Armadillo World Headquarters. Their zany performances and tremendous talent earned them the Sunshine Award for the best new band in town. The Howlers soon turned into Omar & the Howlers who became known for their electric blues rock and Omar’s distinct voice sounding like a grizzly bear on steroids. The band recorded their first album, Big Leg Beat in 1980. In 1987, Omar was inducted in the Texas Music Hall of Fame. His name appears on the Summit Street Blues Trail Marker as an artist who contributed to the preservation of the blues as a significant performing musician. Omar and the Howlers toured in 49 states in the USA and globally in over 25 countries from 1978 until 2013. Omar recorded 34 successful releases on various labels, including Big Guitar Music owned by Dykes. Omar has been writing original songs, playing the blues, and performing for 54 years. He is currently working on new studio recordings, following the successful release in 2023, What’s Buggin’ You?. Buggin’ You made the Billboard top 15 blues releases and top selling blues record on Amazon.

13. Thoughts & Prayers (5:10)

In a time when many artists are striving to find their identity, Erick Willis is slowly leaving his mark on the scene, with a personality that is true and not just a stage persona. Taking cues from the music he was raised on Erick is blending soulful melodic lyrics, with the deep groove of roots-rock and as his lyric says, "with some of the harder stuff." Showcasing a smooth voice with an excellent upper register, uniquely gravely at times, and always pleasant to the ear, Erick is bringing lots of soul to the mix, along with undeniably Texas inspired lyrics.?

Getting his start at an early age, Erick has been no stranger to performing. Growing up in Henrietta, Erick spent countless Sunday's in church with his grandmother learning to love the craft of singing through the choir and holiday specials Erick found his passion for music. Whether it was singing in the choir, traveling to perform in the Texasville Opry, Johnny High's Country Music show, the Texas Gold Country Music Show, or simply talent shows, Erick never lost that drive. One might say Erick was born to perform and entertain and they would be right.

Always one to recognize where he came from, Erick credits his mother for much of his success. Being a single parent, Erick recognized the hard work and dedication his mother put into raising he and his sisters, and took away a strong work ethic and applied it to his craft. Erick's mother also helped influence his musical tastes though her immense love of great hard-rock groups as AC/DC, Whitesnake and Journey. Not only was the rock there, but Erick's grandfather, also a huge influence in his upbringing, introduced him to the golden age of country music.

Through a sold mix of musical styles, and a great supporting cast of family and friends, Erick began to form a genuinely unique ear for music and a solid grasp on life and how to live. As a freshman in high school, Erick took up guitar class and began to learn how to create his own blend of music. It really didn't take long for Erick to realize he had found his calling, and so began his journey as an independent artist. From open mic nights, to talent shows, to late night recordings at a friends home studio, Erick quickly found himself as a performer and not just a guy who could pick out a few cords.
Erick is poised to find success at a great level in this business. Though a unique approach to performing and writing, Erick will continue to be appreciated for many years to come, and be no stranger to the joy that can be found when a melody through six strings meets the power of emotion in true lyrics.

Passion and depth are what makes any good songwriter transition to the next level. Connecting with the audiences the ultimate key. Erick does that. The raw, heartfelt emotion in his delivery can convince even the harshest of critics.

Antone’s is 50 this year. Thats 50 years of Blues at Antone’s. That's 31 years of Clifford Antone laying the ground work, and 19 years trying to carry on his mission. That is ‘playing the blues’, but it’s deeper; it’s celebrating folks who deserve greater recognition. Putting them in the spotlight and giving them their flowers. It’s finding the right young artists to pair with them and establishing torch carriers. This album encapsulates that mission. It is “The Last Real Texas Blues Album.”

This album features an amazing assortment of artists covering, jamming and reinterpreting a deep catalog of classic blues songs. Recorded at Arlyn Studios in Austin, TX with a host of incredible Texas Blues musicians, this album defines and celebrates the history of Texas blues.

Legendary guitarist, gifted songwriter, master of rhythm, snappy dresser - Bo Diddley is all these things and more, and this two-fer CD, which reissues Diddley's first two albums on one convenient compact disc, offers a solid introduction to this man's special brand of musical innovation. While anyone looking for a full overview of Diddley's career should obviously go elsewhere (His Best [Chess 50th Anniversary Collection] is a great one-stop shopping place for beginners), these 23 tunes serve up a young Bo Diddley at his raw and primal best, and confirm that right out of the box the guy didn't sound like anyone else in rock & roll.

Between Diddley's hypnotic, rhythmic guitar lines; the implacable rattle of Jerome Green's maracas; the spacy echo that threatens to envelop everything around it; and the borderline surrealism of the lyrics (witness the updated "Mr. Bones" routine of "Say Man," the overpopulated family of "Say Bossman," or the supreme bad-ass-ism of "Who Do You Love"), this man's music existed in a world of its own, and while you might not want to live there, the one-hour tour offered on Bo Diddley/Go Bo Diddley makes it sound like a great place to take a vacation. In the interest of accuracy, this disc even includes the same take of "Dearest Darling" twice, since the tune managed to appear on both Bo Diddley and Go Bo Diddley; nice to know someone at Chess' reissue department was paying attention to the details. /Mark Deming, AllMusic

Perhaps, some might say it is strange to define yourself as a Boogie-Woogie-pianist already as a young boy, but that is what Nico did when he was a knee-high boy. Of course, he needed courage, an extraordinary talent and a certain kind of smartness. When Nico was 8 years old, he found his neighbor's piano and he suddenly fell in love with its magical tone. Furthermore, Nico discovered the world of Rock'n'Roll, lightning fast Boogie-Woogie-rhythms, breathtaking bass lines and shining melodies. He played with his hands and even with his feet. However, in the beginning of his career, Nico needed to be smart; as a kid, he pretended to be sick so that he could stay at home and rehearse instead. As a young musician, after his concerts he played chess against the owners of the clubs to double his salary. It was all or nothing. Later, not even angry neighbours could stop Nico Brina's career. Once, a neighbour threw a chair into Nico's window because he had enough of Nico's everlasting rehearsals. All that the police then said, was; "Don't mess around with a pianoman". Nico took this quote and wrote a song about this incident.

After some time, Nico added the Blues to his repertoire, and this was like the missing link to finally define his own unique sound. He travelled around and he played his Boogie-Woogie-driven Blues music almost anywhere in the world. He played in Europe, in the Caribbean, in Kazakhstan, in Singapore... - and he even won several awards such as the "Prix Walo" (1995), the "Guinness Book of World Records" title for the fastest Boogie-Woogie ever (1996) and he got a nomination from the "Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik" for his album "Flight 6024" (Category Blues 2014).

It has been 40 years since the journey started. More than 4'000 shows in 19 different countries, more than 1'00'000 km on the road, 21 albums, one LP, one DVD and four singles.

Nico still feels happiness when he plays his piano - just like a child playing its first note. There is magic, when he combines his talent, his power and his musical wit. It is this mixture that makes the entertainer become an artist. Brina is a wizard, maybe a fool, but he shows us where passion can lead us. His BBB-combination - Boogie & Blues & Brina - is like a drug, but without any side effects.

Bo Diddley - Bo Diddley Is A Gunslinger

1. Gun Slinger (1:51)
2. Ride On Josephine (3:01)
3. Doing The Crawdaddy (3:01)
4. Cadillac (2:43)
5. Somewhere (2:32)

9. No More Lovin' (2:21)
10. Diddling (2:11)
11. Working Man (2:30)
12. Do What I Say (2:46)

Not only does it sport one of the most striking album covers of its era (Diddley decked out in cowboy finery, about to get the drop on some unfortunate varmint with one of his fieriest guitars lying at his feet), this 1960 album contains some fine music. The title track continues the legend of you-know-who, while "Ride on Josephine" and "Cadillac" rock like hell (and Ed Sullivan must have been glad to see that Diddley finally learned "Sixteen Tons"). Two bonus cuts, "Working Man" and "Do What I Say," make this one a must. /Bill Dahl, AllMusic

Dutch blues vocalist and harp master Pieter "Big Pete" van der Pluijm may not be a familiar name to American blues audiences, but he's already well-established in the Netherlands – his native home base in North-West Europe. At 23, Pete was handpicked for a European memorial tour to honor the music and memory of legendary harmonica player and vocalist Lester Butler (the Red Devils and Thirteen), backed by several of Lester's original bandmates. The project was met with great success and critical acclaim, so more tours and a CD by the Lester Butler Tribute Band soon followed, securing Pete's arrival on the scene as one of the premier next generation blues performers in the Benelux region.

Since then, Big Pete has gone on to form and record many other successful projects including his debut release "Bathroom Acoustics" by The Strikes, a couple of CDs by the rockin' 50's Chicago blues outfit The Backbones, and most recently, the more progressive and forward-thinking group M.O.C.T. (Men Of Considerable Taste). Pete's growing reputation has also led to tours and performances backing many internationally acclaimed blues artists including Alex Schultz, Mitch Kashmar, Monster Mike Welch, Hook Herrera, Matt Schofield, and Ian Siegal. Pete's informal introduction to the U.S. market materialized in March 2010 with his appearance on The Mannish Boys' 5th anniversary release "Shake For Me." Pete closed out the album in style paying tribute to his hero Lester Butler on the storming New Orleans romp "Way Down South," backed by Kid Ramos, Willie J. Campbell and Jimi Bott along with special guest pianist Andy Kaulkin, who previously recorded with Lester Butler on the classic album "Thirteen."

Now Holland's best kept secret makes his official American solo album debut with an incredible all-star recording lineup featuring Kim Wilson, Paul Oscher, Al Blake, Johnny Dyer, Alex Schultz, Kirk Fletcher, Kid Ramos, Rusty Zinn, Shawn Pittman, John Marx, Mojo Mark, Rob Rio, Willie J. Campbell and Jimi Bott. “Choice Cuts” is guaranteed to be an instant classic not to be missed by anyone who considers themselves a true blues lover! /Blues Magazine

Ryan Lee Crosby - At The Blue Front

Album: At The Blue Front
Size: 70,6 MB
Time: 30:25
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2025
Styles: Blues/Roots
Art: Front

1. Going Away (4:08)
2. I'm Gonna Change (3:37)
3. I've Been Worried (4:24)
4. Mistreating People (3:29)
5. Hard Times (3:21)
6. Catfish (3:44)
7. Slow Down (4:49)
8. Tell Me (2:50)

While there are more than a few breeding grounds for genre seeds, Mississippi’s Hill Country and beyond may be the most fertile. Promising durability in these efforts and in long-term career potential as well, these releases remind us that while the style and structure of blues may vary, the music is a never-ending alchemical process: a metamorphosis of the agony, ecstasy and humor intrinsic to the sound and style becomes transformed into a potent tonic. No genuine practitioner of the blues will pretend to own its method of expression, but only pass on his particular knowledge when the time is right and that is exactly the rite(s) of passage in action here.

Given that, Ryan Lee Crosby and company inhabit the same space that once saw blues icon Skip James perform in his own inimitable style, it is little wonder the musicians simultaneously hypnotize and instill fear as they play “Going Away” and “I’m Gonna Change.” But by the time the bandleader begins to pick the slightly more tuneful changes on his open-tuned twelve-string electric guitar, the mood changes to one of forthright, resolute optimism. It is no accident either that cut introduces percussionist Grant Smith to the mix: the insistent beats he generates are the ideal foil for the breezy sounds of Jay Scheffler’s harmonica.

With “honored guest” Jimmy “Duck” Holmes on guitar and vocals for half this thirty-minute duration - four tracks including “Hard Times” and “Slow Down” - he might well have received equal billing here. But the credit as applied on the back cover is in keeping with his deference in helping apprentice Crosby learn, then configure his own style of playing. While this judiciously-overdubbed collection may come across as a bit too one-colored, At The Blue Front is the sound of the torch being passed, confidently and surely. /Philadelphia Jazz Experience
